"Suan Pakkad Palace is a group of eight small, traditional teak Thai houses built centuries ago in Chiang Mai and transported to a lush tropical garden in Bangkok. The palace is the former private residence of a royal family who converted the buildings and their vast treasures into a museum in the early 1950s. Today, they house antiquities from different centuries, including ancient artifacts from all over Asia, instruments, furniture, everyday household items, paintings, and an ornate throne." - Katie Lockhart

Amazing place to learn about archaeological finds in Thailand and their epics. You can easily spend 1 to 2 hours here. Lots of scenic views. Place is kind of hot, there are some air-conditioned exhibitions but it is mostly open air. It's a good thing that they provide you with a hand fan. Not many people visit here so you will have the whole area to yourself. I spotted less than 20 visitors overall.

My wife calls me a Thai history nerd and it’s a title I wear with pride. I have visited many temples and museums over the last couple of decades however, somehow, this one has never popped up on my Rattanakosin-centric focus. For me the centerpiece of the exhibit was the Lacquer Pavilion that is a fine example of art and architecture from an earlier age. That said, I was unprepared for the sheer volume and quality of works of art contained in the various traditional Thai houses surrounding the garden. My 4 and 8 year old kids were enthralled by the musical instrument exhibit, as well as, the small but comprehensive selection of historical weapons. For the 2 hours we were visiting, I don’t think we saw any other patrons and I gather we were lucky enough to visit on an off-peak day. This place is an absolute must see for anyone visiting Bangkok who has even a passing interest in the art, culture, history, or society of Thailand.

Was a cool experience spending time on this wonderful museum. We went as a group and we all had a great time walking around the grounds of this palace. The teak houses are GORGEOUS .. this is so peaceful and takes you back in time! Highly recommended to go here and spend a nice quiet time. We visited the Suan Pakkad Palace 45 minutes before it closed because we thought it would be a small museum. However, that was not true. The museum actually consists of 8 houses, each containing unique exhibits. Unfortunately, photography and videography are not allowed inside the houses. The staff were very nice, especially a gentleman who taught us many interesting things. If we have time, we will definitely visit again!!

Honestly (and I probably shouldn't see it as a contest), this place should be higher on most tourists must-see lists - higher than Jim Thompson's House for example. This is a really interesting collection of teak houses, that became a royal retreat. You really get a sense of what old Siam was like before thunderous, headspinning Bangkok as we know it superceded it. The site is very peaceful (when I was there on a May weekday, there was just one other couple roaming the grounds), full of interesting and varied Thai art and artefacts, and the staff are very friendly and attentive. The wildlife is interesting too - koi in the ponds, terrapins and monitor lizards roaming around. Its also abundantly green! That makes a change from BKK which is otherwise a fascinating city, but quite beige and grey in its buildings (like many megapolises). I'd highly recommend Suan Pakkad not only if you have an 'off' day and need somewhere to chill and escape the city for a bit, but also a fascinating tourist site in its own right.

I really enjoyed my time here as you can enjoy Thai traditional house and many ancient artifacts and collections. Also, the tour guide lady here is very helpful. Would love to visit again next time in Bangkok.

You only need an hour to look around the houses and the garden. You could maybe stretch this to two hours if you stopped to read all the exhibit notes. Unfortunately photos are not allowed inside the buildings. You have to take your shoes off every time you go inside, so wear something easy to slip-off and on. Nowhere to buy food on-site, but there was a conveniance store a few minutes away.

Off the beaten tourist path but very nice. A collection of 8 vintage Thai houses now turned into a quaint museum. Gives you a real feel for architecture. Not crowded which is part of the charm.
