Under the brilliant glow of the Hoku Moon, My husband and I happened upon The Surfing Pig this past Monday. I was exhilarated. The "robo" spotlight out front with their surfing pig logo was drawing us in. Therel was a sandwich board outside with Richmond beverages also asking people to come in.
I took a look at the menu which they had posted outside, it looked a little higher end on the $ scale, but we were a bit overdressed for either fast food or a local drive-in. So I said what the hell let's eat here.
We stepped into the intimately lit restaurant, which seemed narrow, but the vaulted ceiling changed my perspective with its second floor dining area. It seemed like a great place to at least have a cocktail. The hostess (I feel bad. I forgot her name) greeted us happily and said we could sit wherever we wanted and we chose to sit at the bar. So glad we did.
Our mixologist/server, Natalia was fantastic. Allowed us to get settled and take in the sights of the restaurant, answered questions, offered suggestions. Charming, delightful, helpful, and professional. Everything I would expect from the owner of such an establishment. I felt that she represented TSP wonderfully.
The cocktails... great! We ordered two Old Fashioned cocktails with Basil Hayden. Any establishment that keeps Luxardo cherries on hand has to be a classy place. Yes TSP has these as well as a slice of orange peel with their logo stamped/printed/tattooed, I don't know. We ordered the Porchetta salad and Ahi Katsu for pupu. The dressing for the salad was wonderful as well as the crispy Porchetta. Back to the orange peel. The conversation was so good and we had already ordered Belvedere martinis, that I forgot to check them out. It didn't matter as we were having a great time.
Natalia suggested the special for the evening which was 12 ounce New York strip steak, accompanied with a crabcake, mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts. That was damn delicious. I never had brussels sprouts like that before I can't wait to have them again. My husband ordered the double back pork ribs, and order a side of mashed potatoes. Wade, my husband enjoyed his double back ribs, which are absolutely deliciously fall off the bone succulent. There were two offerings of sauces to either slather on top of, or perhaps dip the ribs into. The ribs were so well seasoned that he felt the sauces were not necessary for him. I felt that the portions were very generous. We are not small guys by any means, we are two local boys after all. We ended up with leftovers, each taking nearly half of our entrées and sides home.
The owner even came out and asked how we were doing. We let him know that it was our first time it was a wonderful experience. I highly recommend this restaurant. I feel that TSP is a place that families can enjoy, even though with young children. There are a lot of things to choose from that kids could share. Cheers to The Surfing Pig. You rock! Mahalo
