This Sculpture Garden in Tuscany Is Completely Themed Around Tarot Cards

"Two and a half hours’ drive south of Florence, we finally saw the tips of the sculptures on a hilltop outside Garavicchio, a medieval village in southern Tuscany. Flashes of blue and green and white and red caught my eye, the sun glinting off mirrored tiles. I held my breath as we made our way up the drive. I had read so much about Niki de Saint Phalle’s tarot garden that to actually see it in real life seemed as fantastical as the fact that it existed at all. [...] Inside The Emperor, which is lined in mirrored tiles. [...] Beginning in 1978, Saint Phalle and a team of artists, electricians, and enthusiastic locals (including a postman) constructed pieces inspired by the 22 major arcana on 14 acres belonging to the aristocratic Caracciolo family. [...] The garden had been, she wrote, “my husband, my love, my everything.”" - Lauren Elkin

Kate Young’s Italian Holiday in Florence, Rome, and Tuscany | Vogue

"Moving through to Tuscany, the entire trip was planned because I wanted to visit the Niki de Saint Phalle Tarot Garden in Grosseto. The place is amazing and bizarre and lived up to my wildest exceptions. I bought three ceramic paper weights to keep on my desk to remind me of the trip." - Kate Young

Stunning works of art with so many fascinating details. The artist’s story is equally captivating and adds depth to the experience. Definitely worth a visit!

The most amazing and inspiring place. The park is well kept and the artworks are amazing. You can easily get lost in the details of the tiles as everything is so intricate. There are so many different sculptures to see, including sound works and interactive areas you can go into. There is no bus from capalbio station and we weren’t able to get a taxi so call ahead to book if you plan on taking the train.

I have waited so long to visit this place and it was so worth it! Such an amazing and inspiring place. At the entrance there are some maps where there are the names of the sculptures. My children enjoyed finding them all and they loved it.

It was a singular place, very different from all the castles and renaissance art you may have been seeing in Italy . The garden is the creation of one artist and her vivid imagination. The sculptures are fantastic. It is a small-ish place, so you can go relax and have a good visit among these sculptures or take a 1 hour passegiatta to see them all… we had a good time walking about and taking pictures! Enjoy!

Yelp
If you find yourself in Rome, this place is a MUST. We rented a car, packed a nice picnic and drove about 100 km north-west of Rome along the coast to this Sculpture Garden. Niki Saint Phalle, the artist, spent a significant portion of her life living and creating these large sculptures which are based the Tarot Card Deck. The colors are spectacular and it is clear she was influenced by Gaudi. Be sure to bring your camera and take lots of photos. The tile-work is like eye candy, especially the "Empress." The artist actually lived inside her while she created the other pieces. When you walk inside the Empress, EVERY wall in tiled with mirrored shards of tile, it is truly amazing. I know that Rome has lots to offer but a day trip to the Garden will leave you smiling from ear to ear.
