9 of the best restaurants in Singapore for authentic Teochew cuisine - SilverKris

"A newer addition since 2018 that has gained popularity for a very authentic Teochew fish soup: a sweet, comforting broth laden with generous slices of batang (Spanish mackerel). The kitchen also delivers hearty mixed soups packed with shrimp, squid and minced pork, plus favourites such as assorted braised pork belly, fried prawn rolls and sesame chicken." - Joy Fang

Wife and I drove down to Tg Pagar for dinner today, and tried this place out. We've often eaten just below at Lad & Dad, but never ventured upstairs. I'm glad we did today! This quaint, small but cosy eatery serves up some really good food, and at reasonable prices too! The Grouper fish soup was clear but flavourful, and the turgid pieces of Grouper slices inside were really fresh. I had their sweet and sour Dory Fish. Now this is where the owner Mr Lee truly impressed me. I didn't look closely at the menu, but he asked me if it was ok they used farmed Dory Fish. He even mentioned that some people weren't too comfy eating this fish, and asked if I was ok with it. I of course said yes, and the dish turned out really nice! Crispy batter, covering soft, moist fish flesh inside, and the gravy, copious thick, with a very old-school taste. So much unlike some of the ketchup smothered sauces we eat in some places. Nice food, friendly staff and owner, and reasonable prices. Like the man said in the movies, I'll be Back😚

Had a meal at Teochew Kitchenette and tried the Batang sliced fish soup, stir-fried spinach with garlic, and fried rice with pork chop. The fish soup was tasty and comforting, although the portion of fish was rather small. The spinach was well cooked and flavourful, with just the right amount of garlic. What stood out most was the fried rice with pork chop, which had a great wok hei aroma and was very enjoyable. Service was generally fine, but the food took quite a long time to arrive, so be prepared to wait before your meal is served.

3 Stars The soup was average, nothing special. However, the fried fish was outstanding—crispy, hot, and perfectly separated from the soup. The chili sauce complemented it beautifully. If I were rating just the fish, it would be 4 stars. The sweet and sour pork rice was also enjoyable, with good flavor and quality meat.

Came here for lunch and just note that it is usually quite crowded during the weekday lunch hour. Got the $7 Gongbao Chicken rice and I absolutely loved it. The chicken resembles more of the sweet and sour chicken but it leans more towards the sour side. Portion sizes are really generous. Highly recommend coming here!

Really amazing experience here! The staff were very friendly and nice and the food was served relatively fast. Enjoyed the seafood beehoon a lot as the flavours were rich and flavourful, and the kang kong sambal was amazing too. Most of the food is on the saltier side, which makes it sinfully tasteful. The bakuteh was nice too and glad that it is refillable. Overall it’s a cosy place that serves delicious food and hope to come again!

Ate at this small eatery a few times. Loved the fish and other food varieties on the menu. Always a pleasant experience as the staff there were all friendly and polite even when they are busy, and will say thank you before you leave. Prices are reasonable for the high quality of food served. Definitely a go-to place for me. The internal sitting area has a few tables only so during peak times there may not be enough spaces for dine in. I did however see many Grab and take-away orders from customers and drivers streaming in to collect.

Very affordable and decent tasting food. Fresh fish and love the fried fish milky soup.

The fried fish soup with milk is delicious. I like how the fried fish is served separately, so that it maintains its crispness. The soup is particularly flavourful as there are bits of tee poh (flounder) in it. The soya sauce is quite high quality. They also serve a variety of Teochew dishes like ngoh hiang and braised items, which I hope to try one day. Price is quite affordable by CBD standards (fried fish soup $7 + rice $0.80 - cheaper than quite a few other fish soups in the area). The dining environment is quite decent as the outdoor seats are in an open, airy area on the 2nd floor of the building, ensuring adequate ventilation (the store also has indoor seats, but these fill up quickly during lunch). The staff are helpful and will help you to find a seat if needed.
