The Thar Heritage Museum

If you want to see the real soul of Jaisalmer beyond the crowded forts, please visit this place. It’s a private collection by Laxminarayan Khatri ji that has been preserved for over 30 years. When I visited on Sunday, the host Shiv Lal ji personally guided us through everything. The museum is full of incredible desert history—you’ll see ancient fossils (proof Jaisalmer was once an ocean), "desert fridges" made of gobar (cow dung), and unique bags made from goat stomach and camel skin for storing ghee. They even have a fascinating section on the history of opium culture and old Mahajani scripts. They also support local artisans; I bought some beautiful hand-stitched pillow covers and bags at the end. The museum barely manages to pay its utility bills, so your visit and any small purchase really helps keep this culture alive. Highly recommended for anyone who values authenticity! #SupportLocal

This is the personal collection of Lakshmi Narayan Ji which has been turned into a museum. The ticket price is minimal to visit the place. Lakshmi Narayan Ji has put a lot of efforts in collecting these old artifacts and the museum gives a great walk through life in Jaisalmer. One of the key things, is that it focuses a lot on rural and city dwellers life instead of royal family which gives a unique perspective of understanding lives of people living in the previous centuries. This place requires overall 30-45 minutes of visit. I would highly recommend people to spend part of their afternoon here and support Lakshmi Narayan Ji in his amazing work! 🙏

This museum deserves to have more people visit it. The proprietor of the museum gave us a wealth of understanding about how the desert people and city people lived. Because we visited forts and other museums, we've often seen how the wealthy lived, but his explanation and artifacts really helped us get a better understanding of the everyday people in the Jaisalmer / Thar desert region. It's very intimate. And very eclectic. And he does let you handle some of the artifacts, which is a real treat. Both he and the assistant were charming and responsive to our questions. Rough Guide recommended it to us, but I think their description does not do it justice! It's an easy walk from the castle or a tuk tuk ride. From the castle, about it 1.5 km. Visiting this museum and chatting with the proprietor, and getting a better understanding of the people around us, has been one of the high points of our three week visit around Rajasthan.

This place is a tiny little gem, waiting to be explored by culture enthusiasts. It is a very small museum, an underwhelming room really, of all things Rajasthan! It has been curated out of a personal collection. Entry is free and you will find Mr Shiva there, who will happily guide you through the artifacts and their significance. There are age-old photographs, tools, weapons, utensils and many other local things to aquaint you about Rajasthani culture and village lifestyle. I went there with my wife and 2 young kids, with absolute nil expectations. But we ended up spending about a good 30-35 mins, lost in conversation with Shiva. And each one of us came out completely entertained. Do visit this place if you have 20-30 mins at hand and an appetite for culture and history.

Nice museum with amazing collections by Mr Laxminarayan Khatri I er last 35 years. Mr Khatri explains the history and information himself, and it's worth. U fortunately not many visit this museum... Do visit... There are also view hand made items made by our village ladies which are sold at reasonable rate... I bought few to support them and our culture & tradition...

This museum is run by a single individual who has spent decades personally collecting artifacts, documents, fossils, photographs, coins, weapons, textiles, and everyday objects related to the history and culture of the jaisalmer. What makes this place special is not just the collection, but the passion of the person running it. He patiently explains each artifact, shares stories that you won’t find in guidebooks, and gives deep insight into desert life, folk traditions, evolution of Jaisalmer, and the harsh yet fascinating ecology of the Thar. It doesn’t feel like a commercial museum - it feels like someone inviting you into their life’s work. If you are genuinely interested in history, culture, anthropology, or just want to understand Rajasthan beyond forts and selfies, please visit this place. Highly recommended for travelers who value meaningful experiences. Places like this survive only if people support them. 🙏

The museum here is a must watch when visiting Jaisalmer. The museum holds all the historical, cultural and artistic significance of the tribes/communities of thar desert. The people there showcase the history of their people very enthusiastically. The museum has been awarded different awards from the government of Rajasthan and India.
