A Road Trip Through the American South Worthy of Dame Helen Mirren

"This family-friendly restaurant in a shopping center isn’t pretty, but the buffet of handsome, cooked-from-scratch dishes is a sight to behold, from fried chicken and corn bread to collard greens and banana pudding." - Food & Wine Editors

Will somebody please stop me from going to this place?? Generally, I do not like buffets, but the food at this place is so good, I keep coming back. The restaurant is in a mini mall. There is plenty of parking. The price for all you can eat is extremely reasonable! One person, depending on age and eating in, will not pay more than 15.00. The assortment of food is too varied for.me to list all. But what I have tried ; different types of chicken, meatloaf, and vegetables, were all good. There is a take out available...you put food in containers and the containers are weighed Some days very crowded)Sunday after church) and other days less so. The atmosphere is not upscale it is your regular diner type environment. Everything is kept clean. When someone invited me to go here, I really put up a fuss. Now I cannot stop going when I am in the area!

Google
This is probably the best country buffet in the Atlanta area. If you enjoy country food this is the spot. The quality of food is excellent and the staff has always been super attentive and helpful.

Google
Great atopmosphere food was well cooked waitress was fast buffet stye food The country fried steak was the house special and it was really good with gravie. They had a good section of vegetables and country food like Thanksgiving or after church at grandma's house! The BBQ was much better than expected they had all kinds of Chicken BBQ Gizzards fried and baked, so this is what they specialize. They had wings, too, Macaronni. Come in and find something good to eat. About 13 with the drink

Google
The service for a self-serve buffet was excellent. However, the food was nothing to write home about. The vegetables looked and tasted like they open up a bunch of institutional food cans, dumped into trays and heated them. Very little seems made fresh there.

Google
I’ve found a hidden gem, which I did not know about. Im usually not a buffet guy but here it was different. Candace gave smiling great service, keeping attentive attention to our 2 tables for my homies graduation dinner. Festive atmosphere with staff just bubbly. The foods were hot, seasoned, bright steamed vegetables, southern flare, and kept full. It was a joy, so thanks.

Google
On our way driving back home to Florida we stopped off at Tomatoes Country Buffet in Kennesaw, GA. I ate a lot and I’m proud of it! The food was delicious from the fried chicken to the fried green tomatoes and the dessert! $13 per adult, it’s a buffet, you go get the food, a server brings you unlimited drinks. Coffee was included.

Google
I love this place, if you are looking for a good home cooked meal that doesn’t serve can good food this is your spot! Everything is always hot they consistently replenishing food and I love that part. My favorite is the Chicken,Dressing and Fried Green Tomatoes it seems like somebody Grandma is back there in the kitchen cooking. It’s not a lot of Dessert to choose from. The price beats every buffet plus your drink comes with it, customer service is great. They are always coming out cleaning around the buffet bar as well. You won’t be disappointed trust me

Google
What can I say? It's a buffet. The food is a hit or miss. Sometimes, the food tastes like it is cooked with old, stale water, and sometimes it is edible. The salad bar is usually pretty decent. Lettuce is always fresh, tomato are fresh, onions etc. Good tuna salad! The waiters are always kind, courteous, and friendly. Their prices seem like they're gone up. Overall, it's a meh, but I believe the earlier you come, the better the food.

Yelp
A big buffet with all the southern classics blasting 90s country music I could not have had a better experience. This is not gourmet food this is a freaking country buffet with delicious fried green tomato's so if you want to relive your Shoney's or Ryan's days this is the place
google avatar

Yelp
For less than $13 per person for a dinner buffet, drinks included, Tomatoes can't be beat. All you can eat standard buffet style setup with minimal decorations inside. Standouts include the fried chicken, jambalaya, chicken livers, salmon croquette, pulled pork (meat alone or sandwich), mac and cheese, cobbler, mini country fried steaks with gravy, and sweet potatoes. They also had potato soup, baked or bbq chicken, fried green tomatoes, and other desserts but they weren't as good as the others. There is a salad bar too but don't bother. Their best items are in fried or flavorful category and you know what you're in for before coming here.

Yelp
Food: The items on the buffet are decent! The fried chicken, green beans and collard greens were good! However, they had fired swai instead of catfish. I don't like that. Service: Out waitress was awesome. She kept our glasses filled and took out plates as we finished them. Ambiance: The restaurant was large and clean.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised by this spot! I have walked past this restaurant more times than I would like to admit. Mainly because I am not a fan of buffets. However, I decided to try something new and check out this spot. When you walk in you are greeted by the cashier. We ordered two buffets and it cost about $30. This does include a drink of choice. After being seated and drink orders placed you proceed to the buffet. Man oh man- they have something for everyone. There is a salad section, several different meat options, a number of sides, to includes starches and vegetables, a few bread options and of course dessert! I started off trying the salad section. I love the chicken salad and ha it a few different times. After trying the salad section I went over to the hot bar. I honestly enjoyed everything with the exception of the mac and cheese. I do have to admit that I am a tough critic when it comes to mac and cheese because my dad does it the best! Dessert was just ok. I think I may have tried a chocolate cake that was decent. However, I would not bother with too many of the desserts Overall- a great place for good home style cooked food. Price is also not bad. You can't get a full meal for $15 too many places these days.

Yelp
Since this place has been bought out, it has gone downhill, except for the service of the ladies who take care of the tables. They remain excellent, and generally friendly. Especially, Jerry. . Yesterday we shared the corn chowder with tough little corn bits in it. This was followed by the crab salad, which has some odd kind of mayonnaise holding it together ; a carrot salad that isn't quite sumptuous and potato salad that is using baked potatoes.. This was followed by a piece of fish, swai (which is a magnificent fish when cooked properly) that could have been cooked three minutes less and been sumptuous. The beef tips were dried little bits of beef, fairly nice gravy, and after that I lost interest. Even the red Jell-O tasted ersatz. Fair thee well Tomatoes. It was nice while it lasted. I think we'll try the buffet up the street.

Yelp
If you enjoy Southern Home Cooking, this is a place to try! Great variety of hot proteins and vegetables including Fried and Baked Chicken, Meatloaf, Fried Chicken Liver and more! Soup, Salad Bar, and Dessert Bar included but I'd skip the desserts as they weren't good other than the fruit. So Many choices at a very reasonable price. I especially liked the Mac n Cheese and baked biscuits. Definitely worth the try; we will be back!

Yelp
This was first time that we want to the buffet with our kids. Space: ample amount of space inside to dine in. It had booths and normal tables. The buffet area was medium size compared some other similar style restaurant that I had visited. Food: Everything was good truly home made taste. Even their sauces tastes good. I had fried fish and my son had hamburger and all tasted good If you are coming to this restaurant expect total southern food cuisine. Overall we enjoyed the whole food and dine in experience.
google avatar

Sam W.

Yelp
For the record I'm not a huge fan of buffets. They get the job done e of feeding a family on the cheap, but I prefer a more controlled dinner. That said, this place is pretty darn good. Pros: Clean Friendly service Ample parking Inexpensive Convenient to interstate Huge food selection Cons: No one has been able to completely and accurately emulate my grandmother's fried green tomatoes, but this place comes close. Highlights: Fried okra Green beans Fried green tomatoes Pulled pork Fruit cobbler If you are craving "southern style" cooking, this ok e can scratch the itch on the cheap.

Yelp
Most of the items taste like they came out of a can. I still much prefer Golden Corral. I went on a Friday night (fried catfish),the fish was rubbery and lacked flavor. Most of the sides were lacking flavor. I had to use salt and pepper on most things. The fried green tomatoes were good and the mac n cheese. That was pretty much all that was good.
google avatar

Meredith R.

Yelp
If starchy sides are your thing, if quantity trumps quality, "The Tomatoes" may be your kind of place. With a decided decline since the last time we were here -- I think it was then called something else -- this is surely my last visit. Fried chicken was dry, tomatoes greasy and most trays of food look like they'd been sitting for a while. Coleslaw was nothing more than minced cabbage floating in a sea of watery mayo. Dinner (pardon my French) sucked. The bathroom needed tending to, which made me question the cleanliness of the kitchen. Next time I have an urge to eat at a buffet -- it doesn't happen often! -- I'll see what's going on at Golden Corral.
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Good was hot and good for a buffet. The dessert looked questionable so we didn't try it. The server was nice and attentive!

Joe W.

Yelp
Good lunch spot. Everything was hot and fresh on the hot bar. The staff was very friendly too!
google avatar

India N.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant on a Monday. I believe they have a daily rotation of some of the offerings. Service- My waitress was attentive and friendly but I was never made aware of the beverage options other than water. Food- I didn't try everything but my favorites of what I tried were the fried chicken and green beans. However everything I tried was good, hot, and fresh at the time I went. Unfortunately, there was a hair in my BBQ sausage that completely turned my appetite off. I should have let the waitress know but I was already done eating so I just left. Ambiance- It's a spacious place that would be great for a big family outing. Despite the hair in my food the dining room area was clean and the food stations were also clean. I can't speak to the bathroom.

Yelp
Food is fantastic for a buffet! Always hot and fresh. Replenishment is frequent and staff will get you anything you ask.
google avatar

Lester S.

Yelp
The food was out of this world for a buffet. The staff was friendly and quick to keep your table clean of used dishes and glasses full of your choice drink. Golden Corral which is just down the street should take notice. And to top it off, some quality light music in the background. I won't stay away long!

Lia A.

Yelp
I read the good reviews on this place and am always looking for good soul food around here and from the look of this plate I was excited to eat. From the first bite I knew it was downhill from there. The collards are full of stems and have zero flavor. The potatoes have to be instant. The chicken barely had any seasoning and the Mac n cheese taste like stouffers. Every bite on this plate taste the exact same. No matter how much salt, pepper, and hot sauce I added to this it couldn't be saved. Maybe they were just having and off day I don't know. The service was also not the best. As this was my first time visiting I was hoping for some instruction on how things are done or where I'm supposed to sit and I was clueless. Wishing I had just walked a few more steps to Iron Age BBQ after this hospital grade meal

Yelp
Not every dish on the buffet rates a 5, but the ones we enjoy are absolutely wonderful. Their chicken, chops, squash, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, cabbage, carrot salad, cole slaw, and salad bar are super and you can get your southern fried fix without the aroma of fried food lingering in your home for days afterwards. Your drink cup is never empty, and they work hard keeping everything clean. Don't bother with the desserts.

Steve J.

Yelp
Good buffet, choices vary according to the day if the week! Several meats snd many sides plus several deserts!

Rick M.

Yelp
Really was enthusiastic to try this place. The Yelp pictures do NOT accurately represent The Tomatoes! The entire restaurant was filthy, many steam table pans on the Buffett were empty and had dry crusty food remnants in them, the Chicken n Dumplings, which I specifically came for, was watery and very bland We'll never go back.
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
It's really good and I recommend this 100%. Good variety of dishes. I have been there a lot, fried chicken and the meatloaf are on point. The hostess always welcomed and kind greeted. The waitress always abundant and professional please tip them well they take care of you!
google avatar

Cindy V.

Yelp
I ate lunch today for the first and last time at this establishment. Nothing had any flavor. The fish was overcooked. The only thing that taste right was sweet tea but not worth 12 dollars.
google avatar

Randy B.

Yelp
Best fried chicken around. If you remember how KFC use to have center keel breast and side rib breast, these cuts are here. Good salad bar as well.

Natasha B.

Yelp
The service is always good. The food was good just wish had chicken salad without any nuts. The place is clean

Ethan S.

Yelp
This place got woke ! And no fried green tomatoes ! Then changed the name ! F that ! I will not support this place !!! This place used to be a gem but it's gone down hill more and more over the years ! And it's pricey and the buffet is small! Better off going to Golden Corral !

Jillian B.

Yelp
Food is awful! Nothing on the buffet is like any country cooking I have had. Service is about the same. Lady greeting you at the front had a sour look on her face when we walked in. Peach cobbler was so hard you couldn't eat it! Will never come back.
google avatar

Bob A.

Yelp
Food and service were good. Not fancy, but for the price worth the trip. The BBQ was actually quite good and the southern veggies were excellent.
google avatar

Yelp
Tl;Dr service is amazing. Food is great, especially for the price. TIP: They require gloves when handling public utensils at the buffet area! Hand sanitizer is also readily available. E X P E R I E N C E we came on a Sunday afternoon around 3pm. Tables are spaced to be social distanced but also convenient for wheelchair users. About 20% of the restaurant is full. When you walk in, you pay first and they offer cash for your server. S E R V I C E Our server was attentive, quiet and quick. She was always walking around, quickly removing dishes and clearing the table. F O O D country fried steak Green onion Fried chicken Sweet corn Meatloaf Sweet potato The above mentioned were sooo good. The fried was beautifully crispy. The corn was buttery and so sweet. Meatloaf was loaded and flavorful. We didn't like the mashed potatoes... They were bland imo. Honeydew Peanut butter cornflake balls Strawberry dream square Banana pudding Buttermilk pie But there are so many options for everyone! You'll definitely find something here that you like. TIP: You can take a drink to-go! P R I C E 12.5pp. 5 tip. Total 31 Drinks included in the price Ayce buffet

Yelp
Went there 10-21-2023 for dinner. Hadn't been there since they were called "Fried Tomatoes Buffet" and I noticed some changes. Price was about $14 for adults, $13 for senior citizens. That's pretty much the going price at this time. We picked out a booth, and soon a server came for our drink order, then we hit the buffet. Lots of great entrees: BBQ chicken, ribs, shredded pork, fried chicken, pigs-in-a-blanket, chicken fettuccine Alfredo, can't remember what else. Lots of wonderful veggies: greens, cabbage, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes, fried okra, fried green tomatoes, mashed potatoes. Everything tasted great. The cornbread is crispy and savory, not the sweet cake-like cornbread that you find other places. There were also biscuits, salad, soup and a dessert bar. Lots of free parking, perfect for families. Located on Barrett Parkway behind Chuck E Cheese near Hobby Town. We'll go there again. Much improved.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
I liked the salad bar and most of the food was pretty good. I wish it was a little cleaner but with a lot of traffic I can understand that it might be difficult a peak time. staff was very friendly.

John P.

Yelp
Looking for a place to go and saw their name on the sign....decided to try it out. SO glad we did! Excellent value and the food was very good! Great salad bar and many, many different main dish options. The desserts were fantastic! Service was very good also. If you're looking for a good place where you can get a great southern meal at a nice price, definitely try them out!
google avatar

Don B.

Yelp
If you are looking for a good southern comfort food buffet, this is your spot! They had a wide variety of meats including fried chicken, baked chicken, meatloaf, ham, bbq chicken, & turkey pot roast. There veggie selection was great too: collard greens, mashed potatoes, sweet potato , corn, green beans, Mac& cheese, fried green tomatoes, cabbage, and the list goes on. The price is right ttop. It is about $12 per person which includes a drink. We went to another buffet near by and paid a lot more for food that wasn't as good.
google avatar

Dale G.

Yelp
FYI the name has changed it's now The Tomato Buffet. Saw the new sign going up today 12-23-22. I'm not a huge fan normally of buffets because the food is usually bland, watery and cold. Boy was I surprised at this place. Hot food. Mac & cheese like your mother makes it. Baked chicken that was moist, pasta salad where I could taste the olive oil and peach cobbler with a nice sugary crust. Omg. Delicious. A huge salad and dessert bar. Anything you want and priced reasonably. Our server for drinks was nice and attentive. Reason it gets only 4 stars - The carpet is disgusting. Tomato Buffet while your changing out the sign, change out the carpet too.
google avatar

Eric N.

Yelp
Great staff, good food for buffet food, and plenty of seating. Fried chicken is really good. Love that they rotate the food so it's not always the same

Renee M.

Yelp
It was my first visit. Everyone was nice and the food was delicious!!! Tasted like it was made from scratch especially the corn bread!!!
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
I guess I'm the odd ball, I hated this place. People were sweet enough. But I've had better food in a school cafeteria. Food was unappetizing, bland and just plain bad. I guess if you need somewhere to eat cheap, go here. But I would think you can eat at Golden Corral for the same price and twice the variety. I'll pass on both.
google avatar

Greg K.

Yelp
Comfort food done well. Buffet of southern staples and some of the best fried chicken around. The menu varies based on the day of the week so if your looking for something specific check the website for the menu schedule. They always have fried chicken. Like any buffet timing can be key, you want to come in when they are busy and the food is being replaced often.
google avatar

W. J. E. C.

Yelp
This was my first visit in many years. It is definitely still the typical buffet. However, the food was a little different than I remembered. There's an over abundance of onions in the premade salads( chicken/tuna etc). Too much for my taste. Pork based vegetables are featured with very limited alternatives for those that don't consume pork. Chances are you will get full. I did. The server kept my glass full.

A L.

Yelp
Good variety of food for a buffet. Customer service was great for our large group. Casual atmosphere. Good location to accommodate large group.

Joe E.

Yelp
Poor quality everything !!! Try AJ's in Alpharetta, MY FAVORITE, everything's tasty TCB is just loads of food, not very well stocked, food overall C

Yelp
Excellent variety of meats, vegetables, salads and deserts. This was the first time I have tried here, I usually go to the Golden Corral in the next shopping center, but I had heard good things about Fried Tomato so I wanted to give them a try. I am very glad I did. They have a large variety of choices, which are different than other buffets in the area so you will be in for a treat. It looks like they have removed some of the tables and spaced out the remaining dining tables so you to close to the next person having a meal. The staff are wearing mask and gloves and they ask that you wear glove when your serving your plate. Plenty of gloves and hand sanitizer available at each food station. The staff is quick to remove any plates from your table when done and also keeping your drink filled. I will most definitely be back when I am in the area again.
google avatar

Deby N.

Yelp
I am very disappointed at the treatment we were given . We were told one price over the phone and a different price in person. We were a group of 12 4 adults and 8 Special Needs students. As soon as we got off the bus, we were being yelled at for coming in too early (we were not even by the front door and were not going in) After fighting about the price (because we told parents a certain dollar amount) they DEMANDED a gratuity.. I get that that is expected for a party of 10 or more but they kept screaming at us and scared the kids. "YOU CANNOT SIT THERE" and many other things. We will never be back.. I will never go there as a private citizen EVER. I understand policy but don't yell at us....especially with this clientele.
google avatar

Paula S.

Yelp
Lot of choices and very busy place on a Friday lunch time. I like southern cooking but I have to always ask if they put bacon in all the vegetables. Found an nice buffet attendant who surprisingly was able to answer my questions. Price is good too. Nice desserts. Can recommend but I most likely will choose another type of restaurant next time.
google avatar

Steven G.

Yelp
I know this place gets great reviews but on the night we were their the food was pretty bad. Even our 16 year old who eats everything said that the food was not good. Maybe they had an off night but I don't think we will be back there are better and closer buffets
google avatar

Zack S.

Yelp
I was very pleased with my visit here. The place was clean, including the bathrooms. My server was very on top of bringing me drink refills, clearing off dirty dishes, and bringing extra condiments. She had a great attitude and remembered my name (Michelle, if you visit and want to ask for her). The food was very good, and the variety is pretty spectacular for the price. Numerous kinds of salad, and the vegetables were very fresh. Lots of fried foods, as you'd expect in a Southern buffet. The gents restocking the food were gracious and kind. The soup was chicken noodle and Brunswick stew, and desserts included numerous puddings, cakes, chocolate chip cookies, and peanut butter chews. For a $11/head (drink included) price tag, it's hard to beat. No, you're not going to get top sirloin, but it's pretty fantastic. The dining area is one large room with booths around the outside and tables in rows on the interior. Nothing fancy, but they were clean and well-lit. I'd heartily recommend it. One warning: be ready to wait at peak times. I arrived at 5 on Friday night to a one-third full house. By 6 PM, there was a line.
google avatar

Brian G.

Yelp
Nice little buffet that is a great counter to the overcrowded Golden Corral nearby. Great fried chicken and a really good salad bar that includes some delicious fresh chicken salad. There are the standard sides and other main dishes you expect along with a variety of desserts. A good find for a satisfied belly.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Good rotating selection and price. Always seating available. Would like to see some better southern options on the rotation.

Thomas E.

Yelp
It is good but not the best. Priced ok we have ate there several times. Better the Golden I think keeps a crowd and stays clean
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
The food is awesome take my word and your tummy will too each day food changes so get a list at the cashier
google avatar

Henry T.

Yelp
There didn't seem to be anything special about this restaurant that would make me want to come back. We also encountered some issues when we went. First off, the cashier doesn't ask you if you want to add a drink. She just added it on automatically. It wasn't until after I paid that I saw there was even an option. And actually, until I saw that sign, I wasn't even aware we paid for a drink as the cashier never mentioned anything about it. But a simple math helped me figure out that we had indeed paid for it. The kids buffet price is separated by under 2 (free), 3-5 ($5.90), and 6-9 ($6.84). Adult prices are $11.085...that's not a typo. Someone 2 adult buffets came out to $22.17 before taxes. Not sure about that one. Anyways, those are the prices including drinks. As for the buffet, it was largely fried foods available. There's also soups and salads, fruit, and dessert. One thing I really didn't like was the fact that they started cleaning up and getting ready to close at least a half hour before closing time. At first when I looked around, I thought perhaps it had already closed and that we should get up and leave. But after double checking the closing time, it was indeed still open. However, they had already begun to roll up the carpets, turn the chairs at the empty tables upside down on top of the tables, and cleaning the floors. On top of that, they made a last call announcement about 10 minutes before closing time and started taking away the food. I looked around and there were still about 7 full tables of people there. So that was a bit shocking. One positive is that the service that we got was good. The waitress came by to check up on us and took plates away in a timely manner. She was also very polite. But since we probably wouldn't get here again if we came back, I'm not sure I will be returning anytime soon.
