"With upcoming gigs painted on the exterior wall, people who look like they’re rusted to the stools, and sticky carpet that emits wafts of stale beer, The Tote has all the hallmarks of a classic local music venue. The bands who play here are mainly local and fall into the punk, hardcore, and heavy metal scenes. But over the years, the likes of Fugazi, The White Stripes, and Mudhoney all have hit The Tote’s tiny stage, as have influential Australian acts like The Meanies, The Birthday Party, and Cosmic Psychos. Pay your money at the door, grab a beer, and check out what inner-city Melbourne is listening to right now." - Carrie Hutchinson

Great sound. Great bands. Grungy and still clinging to punk identity. Beer taps probably need cleaning but the carpet and bathrooms are relevantly nasty

The Tote: Melbourne's Grimy, Glorious Music Haven The Tote isn't just a venue; it's a Melbourne institution. Nestled in the heart of Collingwood, this iconic pub oozes character and history from every brick and beam. With its sticky floors, exposed brick walls, and dim, intimate lighting, The Tote transports you back to a bygone era of rock 'n' roll. The music lineup is eclectic, catering to a diverse range of tastes. From punk and hardcore to indie and alternative, there's always something to get your blood pumping. The sound quality is surprisingly good for a venue of its size, ensuring you can fully immerse yourself in the music. Beyond the music, The Tote has a certain magic. The crowd is a mix of die-hard music fans, local regulars, and international visitors, all united by their love for live music. The atmosphere is electric, with a sense of community and camaraderie that's hard to find elsewhere. Grab a beer or 5 to make, the experience more priceless. The Tote is more than just a place to see a band; it's a pilgrimage for music lovers. If you're in Melbourne and looking for an authentic live music experience, The Tote is an absolute must-visit.

Great old fashioned pub with a real grunge feel. Looks like it hasn't been touched in the last 40 years or so, so it oozes atmosphere. If you are into seeing live bands and want the intimate atmosphere. Here's your place.

Awesome iconic venue. Played there with Fire Roots at the stage upstairs. Great acoustics, nice staff, nice vibe.

Decent venue to see bands. Bouncers were friendly at the door and directed me to upstairs. The upstairs band room is pretty small (maybe 100 people). The PA was pretty loud for the size room. Drinks prices I thought were cheap for Melbourne ($8.50 VB cans). Staff at the bar were also great. Public transport was easy to use the as the buses stop almost out the front and ran well into the morning.

Was incredibly hyped up to go see The Mansplainers single release at the tote, but was greatly disappointed when the people at the front didn’t let me in on the premise I was under 18, now usually this is totally acceptable but in this circumstance it was confirmed multiple times by the people from the Tote prior to the day that those under 18 were allowed with a legal guardian. Scandal business if I’ve ever seen it, what a waste of money. Don’t come here if you’re expecting a good time.
