Tucked away off Pink Lane, just over the road from Central Station, The Town Wall is one of Newcastle's finer drinking establishments, in my humblest of opinions. Forms part of Bewick House, a gorgeous Grade II listed building which was once home to Thomas Bewick (historical local celeb, Google it) and sits just across the way from The Forth, which makes for a handy - if potentially lethal - drinking opportunity.
As you enter, you will usually take a right into the main bar area, but you can also go downstairs where there is The Cinema Room, an area you can hire out for private do's and parties. Anyway, the main bar area is large, with some table booths around the perimeter, plus a number of cosy smaller rooms off the main area, which you can bag if you're lucky and get there early enough! Extensive bar in the centre of the room, my only little gripe here is that you can sometimes find yourself at the wrong point of the bar and so can take a little while to get served. When it is busy, that's fine, but on the odd occasion it can be frustrating. Maybe a little harsh, but I feel it does cost them one star here...
Service aside, I very much enjoy going here because of the superb range of drinks they have on offer as well as a cracking selection of grub. Never been disappointed with the food, the beers are very well kept, if a little pricey at times. They even have their own 'Toon Waal' ale, brewed especially for them by Wylam Brewery, not a bad pint to be fair.
Being where it is, and the style and decor and feel of the place, TTW can get a bit busy of an evening, especially at the weekend. However, we popped in here for one final drink on my way home one Saturday evening, after a day out in York with friends. There were seven of us and it wasn't as busy as expected, so we managed to get a table to seat all of us, and had no trouble getting to the bar. Having said that, the weather was good so chances are people were drinking in places with more outdoor space!
For me, TTW is a must on anyone's list of places to try when out and about in Newcastle. Be it for lunch, a post-work drink or two, or part of a big night out, you really should experience this place. This is just one life's facts, end of. Get there soon.
