The Tremont Chicago Hotel

A victim of the 2020 lockdowns, there was an effort to resuscitate the property as a Selina hotel —which somehow led to the place becoming a homeless shelter in 2023. Sad story.

I sleep in dozens of hotels a year, both for work and leisure travel. I seldom leave reviews. But opinions are so split on Selina Chicago that I feel compelled. First, I found it clean throughout. The common spaces were fun and quirky-- definitely not cookie cutter. As for the rooms, my room 608 was solid 4 star: great bed, fresh remodel. The only downsides were wall-to-wall carpeting that could use a refresh, and dated bathroom (clean, but with a 1970s style low wide toilet, etc). And a slow shower drain that left you in 3 inches of water after a 5 minute shower. That's always gross. I suspect opinions differ on Selina because it is essentially TWO hotels in one: a hostel and a hotel. These are separated by floor. The second floor has common areas incl small kitchen, "cinema room," meeting room, and bar/lounge area. If you're looking for a hotel (as opposed to a hostel-- I can't speak to that), ignore the negative reviews. This is a clean, charming, non-cookie-cutter 3.5 star hotel in a very convenient location (pro tip: Jeni's ice cream one block away has the BEST ice cream ever). and very reasonably priced for the neighborhood.

I expected old, run down, and no extras based on the price I booked it for, but this was worse. Number 1, the AC not working would’ve been better, it actually blew hot air. So when I got into the room the thermostat said 80. After turning the ac on, and lowering the temp I waited for it to cool down. Couple minutes later I checked and the thermostat was up to 82. I check the vents and it’s actually blowing hot air. I ended up turning the ac off, putting a roll of toilet paper to keep the window up a little. Ambien was the only reason I was able to sleep.

What a total dissapointment. Right now, we are waiting for some from the front desk to show up to collect our luggage from the storage room, as well as other guests too to be attended. Long wait, but no one at the front desk. We had no cleaning service for the 2 nights that we stayed, slippery bathtubs, so it´s no safe for elder guests and my room had a permanent water dripping sound from the air conditioning system. No nice smiles at the front desk. Never coming back.

Hotel is in a great location but is in need of a revamp/modernisation. The co-working space and lobby are nice and modern but they do not reflect the room. Beds were clean but the room carpet was a little dirty. Bathroom was old but the water pressure was good. Overall ticks the box to visit downtown but not special in anyway.

This property's poor scores and negative reviews are justified. During my visit on a weekend, I encountered issues upon entering. While the staff, especially the Asian gentleman at the front desk, were hospitable, the overall atmosphere was lacking smiles from guests. My room had a mildew smell, noisy AC, outdated decor, and dirty carpet. I received a room change to a slightly better one, but it still had most of the same issues. Additionally, there was no housekeeping or fridge in the room, despite being a standard private room rate. Unless moved to a renovated room, I won't return.

Garbage, garbage, garbage. This hotel is dirty and just plain awful. Stay away. |The room is super dirty and poorly designed. There’s no normal amenities such as drinking glasses. You’re on your own. |While we were waiting for the elevator we overheard a couple who had just checked in complaining that their room is occupied. |This place is absolute trash. Truly regret this booking.

Unfortunately, the hotel was not up to standards. It is a very old building, and the room we stayed at, was not visually appealing (the pictures online, are not what you’re likely to book). The bathroom is from the 1920’s or older and it was not close to Millenium Park and Grant Park. To make matters worse, we bought and labeled our Trader Joe’s paper bag to keep our food inside the fridge to eat it for breakfast the next day, and it was STOLEN! The owner of this building needs to ultimately renovate the hotel and come up with a better system to not allow for people’s food to be stolen. At least there weren’t any bed bugs lol. That would’ve been a big NO NO for me.

It's fiiiiine. This hotel worked for us but was not our favorite for sure. Right off the bat, my wife was unhappy that there was a connecting door between our room and the next. Not what we signed up for. It did not have a functioning deadbolt! But to the hotel's credit, we got moved to a room not connected to another at no cost. The decor of the building is a bit outdated but has everything you need. One minor gripe - I'm a big person and the toilet was so low to ground! Parking is a non-starter; you're gonna valet. Plan accordingly!

No way to get ahold of them. No working phone number or easy way of contact. Many sources say place has closed

This is a fairly standard hotel. It has not been modernized in a while and the room are very basic. There is not even a trash can in my room. The elevator is very slow. There is always a line to the single elevator. The cost of a room is pricey and the experience is not quite up to the price. The breakfast is very basic. It is generous to call it continental. Not a great experience but it is a bed and the location is great.

I am a big fan of staying at hotels with history but this was a major let down. The hotel is ridiculously unkept to the point where it is falling apart around you- the walls, cabinets and tiles especially. Not to mention that I left with my body crazy itchy from their sheets. I'm hoping not bed bugs and just a bad reaction to whatever cheap cleaner they use but who knows with a place like that. Needless to say, I will not be staying there on my next visit to Chicago.

We checked in and immediately brought our bags to the room and left for the day. We got back to the hotel at 12:30 AM and turned down the bed to find these spots on the sheets. We asked for the sheets to be changed, and it was offered for us to change the sheets ourselves since no one from Housekeeping was there. After I refused to change the sheets myself, we were brought to 3 more rooms before finding a room with clean sheets. Then the manager on duty said that we could go through our third party booking to get a refund and Tremont would approve the refund; however, that did not happen. Because of this service, we will not go back to Tremont. Besides the awful experience, it is a great location for a hotel.

I travel frequently for business and this hotel is not built for the business traveler. I arrived at around 11:30 pm from a late flight and the front desk staff had no record of the credit card authorization that my admin had sent ahead of time (we had double-checked, due to prior issues working through 3rd party booking parties--the staff just didn't have access to email.) For my first two days there, there was only decaf coffee in the room (!!), and you have to go next door and write your name on a list, so they can charge back to the hotel. There is no insulation in the walls--walking down the halls you can hear people's conversations in their rooms. The bathroom tub is stained, the windows extremely dirty but I will say, the bed is comfortable. I was told that you could eat next door at Ditka's and then they could charge back to your room, but that was simply untrue. No one at Ditka's had any knowledge of this. I would not return to this hotel.

We got the chance to get a night away in the city and landed on this place because it had the lowest rate at the time we booked. The lobby is very understated but lovely and simple. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Our room had some dings and dents here and there and the windows were a little dirty but overall, it was a great place to stay. The biggest plus was having a ceiling fan above the bed! Loved that. Also loved the lights from the city views at night but didn't feel exposed; very tucked in. As for location, it was ideal as it is across the street from Starbucks and restaurants all around. This sits on a side street so you don't feel right in the mix of all the action but close enough. The John Hancock is just a five minute walk away. Needless to say, we've found a gem and we will be back.

This is hard review to write. On one hand the Tremont has a wonderful location, is a great value, and offers a free breakfast for SPG elites. On the downside rooms are seriously dated and I might even say dilapidated. My bathroom had pealing paint, a wooden vanity that was rotting, and a shower handle that fell off. The desk in the room was seriously beaten up as well. I guess given the cost and location it deserves 3 stars.

The Tremont hotel at Magnificent mile is located next to a number of great shopping and restaurants, a great home base to explore the wonderful city of Chicago. It has a nice sitting area on the first floor, connected to a fabulous steakhouse, and has a tiny gym on the third floor. The hotel staff are very friendly and nice, making the overall stay very hospitable. The rooms are decently sized, but you can tell the bathrooms are very dated. Not a big fan of the bath amenities either, and you can hear conversations in the hallway and fire trucks outside. However, besides that, the rooms have everything else that's needed (as well as a bed very suited to sit up in and work).

I have no idea why this hotel has 2.5 stars. This place was amazing!!! Our girl Cori was so friendly and helpful giving us suggestions for bars and checking us in. She was so nice! Also this morning my girl wasn't there, but Kevin was! He was also super cool. The rooms were nice! We had a beautiful view, and that was the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in! Thanks for being so welcoming to this SoCal girl!

Great hotel, but with some drawbacks. The A/C is hand the temperature is set by the hotel so, if you want cold air.....forget about: switch to OFF and wait for temperature to go down: great! Sound insulation between rooms is very poor and you can hear noise from other rooms. Rate is decent, but service is also very poor: I faked fir extra water bottles to be sent to my room and I never got them. Check out other hotels in the neighborhood before you opt for this one ....

I just checked into the hotel and discovered they charge for internet usage. What is this? 1998? Why does a hotel, in this location and conceivably serving a heavy business/tourist market, charge for the internet? [Internal voice] Because its an easy money grab? Ah right. I don't care if the rest of the experience is amazing (but considering my room didn't have toilet paper my hopes aren't very high). This is such an annoyance that its worth calling out the hotel and their 'new management' for a lousy policy. I travel a lot. More than most folks. No respectable hotel charges for internet anymore. The practice of charging customers for internet access is a dated money gouge limited to exploitive services like Boingo. It's basically telling the customer, upon arrival "F*ck you, we have your money. What're you going to do? Find another place?" Never staying here again based on this detail alone.

I opened one of the complimentary bottles of water without hearing the snapping sound of the seal breaking, so I opened the other with the same result. I then compared the two bottles and noticed that they had very different water levels. The staff was refilling and reusing disposable water bottles. Everything else seemed fine, but now I'm wondering what is being reused that I wouldn't notice. Towels? Sheets? You get the idea. Not recommended.

I am an author trying to finish a novel at various Hotels in the loop [specifically along the Magnificent Mile]. I can't afford the high prices of some of the hotels in the city. On one of my various sojourns through the loop, on a day off from work, I came across Tremont on my way to Whitehall Hotel and decided to check in. Oh my, I was pleasantly surprised. I stayed in room 1509 on MLK day to contemplate where I was going in the novel [the room was not ostentatious but not outdated & bland either]. The designs were muted and neat [very clean] and I slept well and felt safe. The view was of a seminary-in the morning light- the room flooded with a silver hue and it was like being transported to another world [and all for under 100 dollars]. There are many ways to see a room; never leave your heart out of it.

Really bad hotel. The room was dark to begin with since two lights were burnt out. I had to keep the blinds closed because the windows were filthy. The bathroom was really awful. Dirty grouting, chipped tiles and since there was no fan or at least no working fan the door hinges were all rusted. Had to ask for our shampoo and soap to be replaced on the second day since housekeeping did not leave any and was told to come down to the desk to get it. Doorman was very nice but front desk left unattended.

If you can make it past the human rotisserie that is the covered entrance with 10 heaters blazing it only gets worse. Never anyone at the front desk. Checked in on Friday. Lettuce all over the elevator floor. Saturday afternoon- still lettuce all over the elevator floor. Mildew in shower tile, tub didn't drain. Windows had a crazy draft, accordion blinds and no curtains. Some baseball boy pic in the ceiling. Cheap furniture, cabinet in bathroom had probably a dozen layers of paint on it. Heat lamp in the bathroom......hello 1980's. The sheets were awful! I'm talking 100 count. The blanket/duvet cover was pretty beat up, snags all over. Ice machine on main floor- cups only to move ice. I could hear the people in the room next door.....I was able to hear them blow their noses. The bed was super uncomfortable but it didn't have bugs. I love historical buildings, even though this has no historical integrity past the outside. The lobby looked nice. I expected more from the rooms.

Very nice, very clean hotel just off the main shopping district. The staff was very helpful and friendly. My only complaint would be the size of the rooms. Ours was a bit cramped, but it's also an older building so that is to be expected I guess. Plus we were out seeing the sites and didn't really spend much time in the room. I would happily stay here again.

First, let me start off by saying that my wonderful review probably has something to do with the fact that I'm an SPG Platinum Preferred Guest. I woke up on a Saturday afternoon and decided on a whim that I wanted to spend the rest of my weekend in Chicago. I got onto the SPG website, and booked a room at the last minute for only $149 per night which is a steal given the location of the hotel. I hopped in my car and arrived at the Tremont 2 and a half hours later. At check-in, I was greeted warmly and the staff was friendly and very helpful for the duration of my stay. They informed me that my room was on the 16th floor and pointed me to the elevator. Turns out the 16th floor is the top of the hotel. When I got to my floor, I realized that there were only 3 doors down the hall. I was given one of the hotel's 3 penthouse suites!! All to myself... for $150 per night. It was a beautifully updated one bedroom, 1 and a half bathroom suite, complete with a baby grand piano in the living room, and that wasn't even the best part!! The windows wrapped around the entire suite, all the way up to the cieling, and showing some great views of the John Hancock building, which is directly across the street, and you can see all the way down to the lake! The bathroom in the bedroom was updated and gorgeous with a shower and a nice big soaking tub. The bedroom was large with a nice sized closet, and the bed was fabulous. Living room had a couch, a fire place, a dinig room table and a little wet bar with a fridge, as well as a half bathroom. At the last minute, I ended up wanting to stay an additional night which they had no problem accommodating. There is a restaurant right downstairs that serves great food, and the server gave me some great tips about places to go check out nearby. Bottom line: my stay at the Tremont hotel was absolutely fabulous, and I will absolutely be staying there again (as long as they promise to put me in the Michigan Avenue Suite again). I don't even play the piano, but I sure took pictures on that baby grand as though I do! hahahaha

My husband & I recently stayed at this hotel. When we were five minutes away I contacted the hotel to see if we could check in early. I was told that I needed to be present and show a photo ID to even be made aware if any rooms were available. Again, I explained that I was a few minutes away and hypothetically, if I was there in a few minutes, were any rooms available. Again, I was told I needed to be present and show a photo ID. I walked into the hotel minutes later and showed my photo ID and was told no rooms were available. I spoke to Deju (pronounced Daysia) - not sure about spelling. She is African-American with long black hair with braids and gold ribbon through front braids. The following are straight forward observations from our stay: 1. Wallpaper torn and coming off wall. Other areas of wallpaper with bubbles, wrinkles and cracks; 2. Tiles on bathroom floor cracked, chipped; 3. Flooring under carpet by bathroom sink had major divet and sunk down; 4. Short toilet; 5. Heat did not work. We set heat since it was chilly outside and very cold air was coming into our room. I called the front desk and was told by a young female that she would call maintenance and definitely call me back in a few minutes. She never called back and no one came to our room; 6. Arriving back at hotel at approximately 11:45pm and no one was on duty at front desk; 7. Soap dish next to sink but no soap to be found; 8. Extremely tiny room; 9. Parking at hotel costs $63 - I used SpotHero which cost $30.

Decent, but old hotel. Looks like it had a renovation recently, but still needs more work, particularly with the weird smell in the elevator and the hallways. Friendly service. The breakfast is pretty mediocre (i.e., can't order from the restaurant and the buffet doesn't include any breakfast meats). The gym is tiny and the treadmills work, but no tv. My room was clean and the environmental controls worked well.

We just stayed at The Tremont, great modern boutique hotel. Great value!!! The bed was super comfortable! We slept like babies Will definitely come back!!!

The location of this hotel is great. It's near restaurants, shopping and attractions... a good place to be while visiting a city. Unfortunately, there were many things off about this hotel. The bathroom is horrendously out dated. The light switches are odd and the over head light works on a dial .. you have to wind it up and that allotted the amount of time you'll have in the light. Now, I understand this as an energy saving tactic, but it's weird & the light bulbs were so hot, like heat lamp light bulbs almost. So weird. Also, our shower handle was broken. It took about 20 minutes to figure out how to wiggle the handle enough to move the dial for it to turn on, and then figuring out where the handle really was according to the temperature was another task in itself. This was so annoying. The room itself wasn't bad. I enjoyed the view and the bed was comfortable. Our second room key mysteriously went missing from the room after the cleaning service was in during the day, which is extremely odd & we still can't figure out. The service was okay, nothing too friendly or helpful, just average, if not a little below. I definitely will not be staying here again.

NEVER STAY HERE! By far one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at. First, the doormen/bellhops were of no service. We pulled up and they never came to unload the vehicle. I thought maybe they were just valet. After unloading 8 bags and bringing them inside, one of them asked if we wanted to use the bell cart. They were actually the bellmen! Upon checking in, we found out that the room was not ready. I expected this as it was 11 AM. The bellmen then asked us if we wanted to store our luggage until our room was available and we accepted. Upon deciding to add our laptop to the bags in storage, I felt I better tip the man after he was watching me load the bag with the computer. I felt it's better to tip (even though we had no service) than for him to watch me and decide that he was angry for no tip and then steal from our bags. Upon getting a call at 3:30 that our room was ready, we made it back to the hotel only to find no doormen or bellhops. We even helped an older lady into the building with her bags. The front desk attendant asked if we wanted help to our room. I would say with 8 bags that would be nice! The girl who brought them up had obviously no training. She didn't know where to put our bags and I had to suggest where to put them. She also smashed a roller bag against some long gowns that are delicate. Once getting into the room, we noticed how small the space is. I sat down and immediately noticed the dirt (which looks like black mold) in the vents. See attached picture. Walking into the bathroom was the icing on the cake. DISGUSTING. First it's old and worn out. The lighting above the sink is dim, toilet looked dirty, there was hair on the clean towels, the cabinets have screws drilled into them from the outside. Just look at the pics for yourself. My girlfriend wanted to take a bath and after noticing the bathroom, we both said no way. They only had 2 bath towels in the bathroom and 2 wash clothes. My GF had to use my towel to dry her hair. The water to the shower took forever to heat up and the shower won't shut off. I also noticed the sheets don't even cover the mattress/box springs. I travel frequently and I have NEVER seen a hotel room in this condition. Take my advise and run. It is a complete waste of money. Unfortunately we are here for 3 days for a wedding and with Lalapalooza the same weekend, there are little choices left to make a change in hotels.

I made the mistake of booking this hotel without first checking the reviews. The room I was given reeked of mold and mildew... as other reviewers brought up. There was clear water damage and paint chipping. I spoke to the front desk staff and they didn't seem surprised-- just arranged for me to immediately be put into another room, which was kind. The new room, though, had a toilet that wouldn't flush, a leaky faucet, and chipped countertops in the bathroom. They called someone to fix the toilet/faucet issue, but I'm nevertheless appalled that this hotel is considered 4 stars. The only good things about this hotel are the kind staff and the location. Otherwise, very disappointing.

Horrible Service DO NOT STAY HERE!! I REPEAT DO NOT STAY HERE!! I booked a block of rooms for a birthday party and it was a Disaster!! I had no heat or hot water in my suite that cost $400.00 a night! All of my guest had issues with their rooms. One of the rooms actually flooded! Not to mention the treatment of the staff. I had to call the front desk 4 times! Once someone finally showed up nothing was addressed. I was told that it would make to much noise to fix the issues and it would have to be completed AFTER CHECK OUT! I have been waiting on a return phone from the Manager Laura for over a week now. Every time i call the front desk i am given the run around. I am told that the all the managers are in a meeting and no one is available to handle the situation. They then state someone will give me a call which never happens!!

My husband booked this place without looking at Yelp reviews (smh). What a mess. The shower didn't drain, there is no air conditioning, the shower handle came off, you hear outside noise like sirens, AND the front staff didn't give a f when we told him this. Awful

This is a really odd rundown hotel near Mag Mile in Chicago. I stayed her because I am a very loyal SPG member, but I was really surprised by the quality. I give it two stars: - One for the good location right near Mag Mile - One for the nice service from employees and the SPG points I earned Now for the bad / odd. This place is just really old and rundown. I think Starwood acquired it a year ago or so and just hasn't renovated yet (but why!?!). I thought it was a Luxury Collection property when I was booking, and boy was I wrong! You can sort of see how this hotel used to be grand, but it certainly isn't anymore. Some more specific concerns: - The elevators in this place TOOK FOREVER. Seriously, very slow and inconvenient - My floor (8 or so, I can't remember) was really rundown - paint chipping, dents in the walls, etc - Because it is so old, the property just seemed dirty, like they couldn't get it clean with all the dust, grim, etc. of all the years If you are just looking for a cheap place to stay in Chicago, really love SPG points, and won't spend any time at the hotel, you can stay here. Otherwise, I'd recommend you look elsewhere.

Firstly, let me say the hotel staff at the Tremont was phenomenal. Every employee I met was courteous, professional, and competent. The issue I had was with the quality of the room. The Tremont Hotel was the culmination of a road trip from Minnesota to Illinois, and we were looking forward to an awesome time. However, as soon as we settled into our room, my family started to notice problems with the room. There were nail and screw holes everywhere throughout the kitchen area. It appeared as if cabinets and window valences were torn down and the holes never bothered to be patched. Furthermore, two cupboard doors in the kitchen were completely missing handles. The main light and fan in the bathroom did not work. The only light was provided by the vanity. It appeared that someone was going to secure the cables hanging from the TV, but never finished the job. The cables were wrapped in protective plastic but were not attached to the wall, so the cables kept hanging into the walkway, which worried us considering we had our 2 year old with us. It looked liked the telephone line was literally run behind the wallpaper (not the drywall). I could see and feel the wire underneath the wallpaper. Finally, the worst part of the room was an electrical outlet near the bed which didn't have an outlet cover attached. This again concerned us with our 2 year old running around. The Tremont Hotel is considered a category 4 hotel but fails to live up to that distinction. The room we occupied would have normally cost approximately $350 per night or 10,000 SPG points. The quality of the room was no where near that price.

Update: it gets worse. I noticed a $40 charge on my credit card from them on the day of the checkout. They had asked for a credit card when I checked in although the hotel was already paid for. They said they just need a credit card on file in case things break etc. I asked if there additional charges and the front desk specifically said no. Ok fine. But then I called them about the charge and they tell me that have an amenity fee of 9.99 a day that isn't included in the price that I had already paid. What does it exactly cover, I asked. "Oh it's like a resort fee but we can't charge a resort fee because we're not a resort". You got that right! Your hotel is not even as good as some motels I've stayed out. They said I need to just call the third party site that I booked through. I feel like this is very unjustified. They didn't even notify me on my check in that there would be an additional charge. Beware!!!

Starwood members will snub this hotel as its very no frills, but those seeking a reasonably priced and well appointed hotel in a great location will love the Tremont. The front desk takes their time to respond but when they do, they're super nice and helpful. No gym but they give you free passes to the Westin to use their gym. Filthy windows but great view- if you ask nicely for it-to borrow a phrase from Adam Carolla- good lenses bad frames.

The Tremont is exactly as advertised (from reviewers). Clean room? Check. Comfy bed? Check. Great location? Check. Old? Check. Rooms Yes, old, but read on. I'm not sure what some people's fuss is all about when they make it sound like this place is falling apart. Even though the hotel is old, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the room was in great shape. The washroom looks like it had been updated in more recent years. The shower even had a guage showing what temperature the water was at. Fancy shmancy. There was an arm chair that also looked newer. The bed was very comfortable and had a gigantic mother of a headboard which gave it some class. The ceiling light was dim but the room had numerous lamps which helped a lot with lighting. Not much of a view from Room 501 as it was looking right onto all the building's air conditioning units. No issues with free wifi. The room was clean and tidy which was what really mattered. No pieces of furniture falling apart, no mold, no bugs. Elevators I had read complaints about the elevators being too slow. IMO it wasn't bad at all. We waited more than a minute probably just once in our five night stay. Believe me, there are far worse elevators I've had to use and to be honest, I often wait longer for the elevators in my "modern" office building at work, which has 6 elevators and only 2 more floors than the Tremont. Of course it's also hard to compare the two because of the amount of people in and out of the office. But just sayin'. We were in Room 501 which is located right next to the elevator. Didn't hear a peep all night. Location What a great location. One block to the Magnificent Mile. One block to the John Hancock building. Four blocks to the Red Line which gets you anywhere you want to go including downtown and to and from the airport. A short bus ride to the zoo. Can't beat it. Tons of eateries and cafes around the vicinity, and a short walk up Rush Street where many trendy restaurants are located. Staff Front desk staff were friendly and always greeted us as we came and went. House keeping was fine and it's a nice touch to receive a free bottle of water daily. This is the small touch that definitely makes life a little easier. Cons Just a few small negatives to note. The safe didn't really work properly. I wasn't able to turn the deadbolt to lock it. One day we did not get a foot towel for the shower and another day there were no cups at the sink These are small details and I'm sure they would have been rectified quickly but it wasn't worth the trouble. Misc Also took advantage of the keycard which had a promotion for a free upgrade for the Sun and Stars admission to the John Hancock Observatory. Paid for one admission and got to go up once in the day and once at night. Summary At first I was going to give this place 3 stars but then I gave it some more thought and considering the cost of hotels in Chicago, Tremont is great if you can score a deal. I'd definitely come back.

Disgusting hotel. Rooms are moldy, smell bad and decrepit. Had booked 4 nights, but didn't stay. Asked for a refund and the manager said no. Had a asthma attack due to the stench. Desk clerk said they had burst pipes and were trying to cover up the odor. See attached pictures. They also charged us $10 a day (for 4 days) for "Spa ". How can they charge when we never stayed???

Great location near Magnificent Mile, John Hancock Building, and Ditkas steakhouse. The decor of the room looked modern and clean. However, when I first checked into room 1107, the shower handle came off, and you could not turn the shower on. I spoke to the front desk 3x, and waited almost 2 hours for the maintenance guy to fix it. Unacceptable. After that was fixed, you were not able to turn the shower water all the way off. Not my water bill, but thought maybe they would try to fix it. I let the front desk know again at check out. Front desk was ok. The girl outside who flagged a cab was friendly. I don't think I ever saw the manager. Nicer hotels you would normally see the manager greeting people. I think it was an average stay. Customer service could use some work. Thank god I used my SPG points because I would have not paid full price for this place.

Have two nights here. People are really friendly. But we get off the elevator onto a floor with plastic taped to the wall and covering the floor. Get to our room and it's a corner room with two windows...looking at the roof covered with vents. Then we get to the shower and the handle falls off when barely touched. They came up in about 10 minutes & fixed it after I called. They must be packed full because no one in their right mind would give out this room until there were no more left! It's definitely not the way to make a good impression!

This is a small, historic hotel. Located around the corner from Water Tower Place, the location is extremely convenient. However, that's where the positives of this hotel ends. I was given a deluxe king corner room. The room is awfully small without a fridge. There is one lonely chair in the corner, & a desk with a chair. There is a very small dresser, and that's about it. The bare minimum is here, and the room reminds me of the Palmer House Hilton, but less decorated. There are two major issues with this room, #1007, when I stayed the last week in February/beginning of March. Firstly, the air conditioning doesn't work. When I set the unit to cold, hot air comes out. Secondly, the windows are not very well insulated. Not only are the fire truck sirens amplified, but heat is not retained. Since the air conditioning unit wasn't working, I decided to turn off the unit altogether. The starting temperature of the room was 77°. When I woke up, the temperature was 68°. That gives you an idea of how little insulation there is! I called the front desk the next morning, they said there's no air conditioning available in the winter time, only heat. Therefore, you cannot control your own temperature in the room. You are completely relying on nature. If I was camping and not at a hotel that cost $200/night (pre-tax), I would be okay with that. But, alas, I am not. Therefore, the hotel gets two stars. Valet parking is $60/night. Breakfast in the mornings is actually at Ditka's, a restaurant attached to the hotel. I don't think breakfast is open to the public because I don't think the front door was unlocked. The breakfast was okay. It seems everyone's breakfasts are charged to the room, whether or not it's free. All of breakfast can be free if you choose to do so as a SPG platinum member. There is a sign-in sheet where you put your name and room number. I'll post under Ditka's about the breakfast, since I feel that review belongs to the restaurant and not the hotel. I would prefer not to stay here again, but the fact is, it's SPG's cheapest hotel in Chicago's downtown. In terms of points, it's 10,000 points versus other locations that are 12,000. I'll probably end up staying here again begrudgingly due to location, but just know there's only the basics here!

This is a first impression review and if things get a lot better I will amend it. Also I have no idea what the room price is (work booking), and I should include that I travel and live in hotels for a living and spend the majority of my year in an average of maybe 30 random hotels, nationwide and world wide. Upon arrival the woman at the front desk that was available gave me a blank and somewhat rude stare when I said hello. I loaded the cart with my bags and stood there waiting for check in service. The other woman was nicely checking someone in and the First Lady just continued to stare at me weirdly. I had to ask if she could check me in. Then things got weird. She was flat and blunt with information and answers and when I mentioned that it was getting a little odd she started quietly telling me that it was not, I mentioned that it was a very unusual check in experience and got told again that it was very normal in a matter of fact way... anyway it was pretty standoffish in a quiet manner by the time I finally got checked in and I had to tell her politely that she was being really weird and rude to me. I didn't believe the lackluster apology at all. Then there's the tiny room with the used coffee filter and tray on the desk, a cleaning cloth on the floor and a dirty desk top in general. No fridge, no microwave etc and that's fine. There were several other off and condescending moments but I don't need to get into any more than I already have. I really hope that my 3 day stay here gets better while I simply avoid the one problem lady downstairs.

We arrived and there was no bellman to help us. When we checked in the receptionist was disinterested and cold. We paid over $300 a night for a room that was so little we didn't have room to walk around in it. The photos which were posted are very deceiving. There was no refrigerator. The elevator didn't work so we had to use the service elevator. The bathroom shower never got hot enough. On the second day there was only one large bathroom towel for two adults to use. I do NOT recommend this hotel.

Bar Admissions Conference Attendee I went to the Tremont for a conference with about 65 other Illinois attorneys. This was a nice quaint little hotel next to Mike Ditka's Restaurant on the Magnificent Mile in Chicago. Thursday night during our cocktail reception, "The Coach" was hosting his well-attended football radio program in the room next door. Friday during our conference held in the Executive Club & Board Room on the 2nd floor, there was loud talking coming from a room located down a flight of stairs behind the conference room. This was the ONLY drawback to an otherwise perfect conference. I would STRONGLY suggest that you refrain from hosting at The Tremont unless they assure you that you are the only show in the house that day!

Do not stay here. I called in advance to request a room away from the elevator. When I came in for my stay they wanted to charge me an upgrade charge for requesting a room away from the elevator. When I said no they put me next door in a dumpy building where my view was of a dumpster which woke me up early in the morning. I went to take a shower and the shower faucet did not work at all. I ended up getting another room in the morning so I could shower. This is a 4 star hotel? I don't think so.

I can deal with a lot of things while traveling for business. Small? Ok. Dated? Ok. Overpriced? Sure, it's a busy weekend. But the Tremont is all of that. What I can't deal with is coming back to a room that is 91 degrees and I need to go to sleep for an early morning? No, thank you! Then, add in a rude front desk agent (who later told my husband to put a bucket of ice in the corner of the room to cool it down) and then an engineer who comes in and tells us that they decided to turn all the AC to heat today (even though it was 70 degrees), so all the rooms who had the cool setting on got heat instead. (Though the engineer was so nice and not at all to blame.) I can't say I would recommend this hotel...unless you're a big fan of saunas.

Run.... i wish i would have read the reviews and actually listened to them!!! This Hotel is in the perfect location. It is close to everything!!! But the Hotel is OLd as he** the vents are rusty ! We had to move rooms because the first room we stayed in had MOLD n the air vents and on the bathroom ceiling! We had no towels!!! How do you clean a room and leave ZERO face towels? We had sheets missing from our bed... the room was nasty it's OLD and it's disgusting! This Hotel needs to be demolished and rebuilt! I'd rather stay in my car or a motel 6 then to stay at this hotel again.

This hotel is in a decent location, staff is pleasant. However, the sink in the bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned, the carpet was sticky, and the TV in my room didn't work. They also charge a $9.99 fee per day for a safe, coffee, and two water bottles in your room. The coffee in the room is a joke. The coffee maker itself appears to be worth less than $9.99. This should be optional, not fair to force this on guests when the quality of what you deliver is this poor. The doors also do not fit into properly in the door frames so you can hear people down the hall coming and going from their rooms because they have to slam them shut. I do not recommend this location, way too expensive for what they offer.

This hotel is old and outdated. I booked a room for a mini stay cation and I was bilked out of $160. I was attending a conference in downtown Chicago but I wanted to stay overnight because my physician was the speaker. I paid for the room on my credit card and I was going to pay the $15 fee in cash. The cashier asked me for an additional $175 to secure my paid room. I just left and I am going to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Pro is that it is located right near the Water Tower. The cons are tooooo many. 1) the place needs a makeover 2) the elevator is super tiny 3) the accessible door was inoperable. Just stay away and stay at another hotel. 4) the hotel staff is super ghetto. The front desk receptionist asked me if I wanted my bags put in my room that wasn't ready. Shady to the nth degree.

Pretty disappointed. Great location, but very dated. The bathroom is gross. Wood peeling and the vanity is falling apart. The pictures online are very deceiving. Won't be staying here again.

Small, cramped, dated rooms. The A/C did NOT work. The bathroom toilet was jammed against the wall. The view speaks for itself (you have to look at the pictures). I complained to the manager that I was paying $350 a night for s dump. She said I paid via a 3rd party and they can't help me. How about getting me a decent room where the A/C works and I don't have to "lean left" to sit on the toilet? Best of all, this is a STARWOOD Property and I am a member. I expected more. Business travelers go elsewhere. I personally like small, historic boutique hotels. In this case "I chose poorly". Beware.

The location couldn't be better! Less than a block from Michigan and walking distance to anywhere north or east of the river. Quick bus or train ride anywhere else in the city. Great restaurants all around too! The hotel itself is fairly basic, but the desk clerks were friendly and helpful, the bed was super comfortable, and it was clean. For the price, it can't be beat!

Scuzzy. I see why SPG tried to unload it, and why Marriott actually did. The room was moderately dirty, the toilet had toilet paper in it upon arrival, the shower grout is black with mildew, the mirror in the bathroom has large sections that are losing their silver, the light cover in the bathroom appears to be dirty and covered in some form of leaking water that has calcified. This place is primed for a tear down.

Don't stay here. I booked and prepaid my room at least a month in advance. When I arrived, the hotel added a $19.99 charge for shampoo, soap and water (which I didn't even want) and then required a $100 deposit. Total garbage because neither of these charges were disclosed when I made the initial reservation. Don't stay here

Stayed here for 5 nights. After reading the reviews beforehand I definitely thought it was going to be worse than it was. The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable! The bathroom definitely needed to be updated, the toilet was a little old fashion, and the shower didn't drain very well but thankfully it was clean. When we took showers the vent above the bathroom door started to drip on the floor which was slightly inconvenient. The people were friendly at the desk and were extremely welcoming when we arrived at 3 am our first night due to a flight delay, we had no issues checking in or out.

I'm only giving this a 2 star as the location was the only really good thing about it. The check in was ok. Our room was tiny and nothing special. It seemed to be clean, but the bathroom tile was cracked and the toilet seat was not stable. Don't think this has been renovated recently.The walls are paper thin, we could hear the TV from the next room, and when the air conditioning kicked on it sounded like a rattling engine which kept waking us up all night. Our room faced another building and we got to hear the food delivery trucks when they pulled in. When we checked out the woman was very abrupt and not particularly friendly - didn't even ask if everything was ok. We used spot hero for parking down the street. Was not a 5 star hotel and probably won't be back.
