On the Grid : The Trocadera

"If you were a teen in the late 90’s you’ll understand the nostalgia surrounding the Troc. It was and still is the best place to see your favorite band. It has a long history including being an opera house to start and a burlesque venue for a period. Now it hosts dance parties, movies, and comedy nights along with its usual shows." - True Hand Society

Popped in early on a weekday before lunch plans elsewhere, it was fairly quiet at that time. I was only here for a drink so can't comment on the food. The interior has been done up nicely, and the beer selection is better than an average pub, I went for the Beavertown Neck Oil. I don't know how to explain this, but the vibe seemed a little off, and slightly kind of uncomfortable and maybe unwelcoming? I'm not able to articulate properly in words what I mean, but it was enough to make me move on elsewhere after one drink. I have since looked through other reviews on here that seem to corroborate my view.

A special shout-out to Sophie, Lucy, and Helen, who were nothing short of exceptional. Their warm, friendly service and genuine attentiveness made our visit really memorable. What impressed us even more was how accommodating they were. We’d asked if we could watch the F1, and without hesitation, they made it happen for us — such a thoughtful touch that really went above and beyond.

Really nice pub. Loved the ambience of a typical British pub. The food is really good and they have a great choice of drinks. The staff have been really great, specially thanks to Helen for ensuring everything is don't smoothly. Will definitely visit again :)

Since Wetherspoons decided to stop doing steaks at their pub chains. Me and my needed somewhere in town that still do it.. So we decided to go to the trocadero and try it out as we never been in there for food. We went for the 16oz Steak with Peppercorn Sauce and a side portion on Crispy Prawn, which also had a side of Chips, Tomato, Mushroom and Garden Peas. Brilliant price ans quality of food ans service by the two colleagues Heather and Levi who served me today.

Went here in the daytime found it as a traditional English pub, pleasant staff good selection of beers. It's also geared up for sports fans with big TV screens one was showing Australian football, as with most pubs nowadays you are able to order from your table. Food was OK but found it slightly spare and the menu was identical to another pub in the area so not unique to The Trocadero. But as I stated atmosphere was very pleasant could have a good conversation without blaring music interrupting it, just could improve on food portions in my experience.

Was looking for a place for lunch on my first day in Birmingham. Stumbled into the Trocadero. Staff was super friendly and prices were decent. They have happy hour from 5 to 8 M-F. Ordered a cheese and bacon burger and it was a real patty. Over the next few days I made it my routine stop of drinks. The staff here are fantastic and as a traveler made me feel very welcome. If you're lucky enough to get Lucy, Santino, or Paulina, you're in good hands. Location is great too, in the heart of the city centre, close to New Street Station. Definitely worth popping in for a pint if you're in Birmingham.

I had such a fantastic experience at Trocadero — this place truly knows how to make you feel welcome! From the moment we walked in, the hospitality was outstanding. And the food? Absolutely delicious. Everything was freshly made, full of flavor, and clearly prepared with love and care. It’s rare to find a spot that delivers on both atmosphere and quality like this. Highly recommend Trocadero — we’ll definitely be coming back!

I ordered the double burger. They gave me a single. So I sent it back and waited AGES. The burger was then delivered as a double but was so pink in the middle- clearly rushed. Ive had the runs all day today. Burger was tasty though, paying for it now. Not a bad place, probably wouldn't return given the choice in town.

Yelp
The Trocadero is a pretty standard boozer right in the city centre of Birmingham. If you are looking for a reasonably priced pint this could be the perfect spot. The drink options are fairly standard with all the big brands you would expect but the prices do reflect that. If football is your thing you will think this place is ideal. There is always sport on the tvs around the venue and on match days this place is packed out. On the flip side of that if you are not a football supporter maybe check if there is a game on before heading down, there will be no seats and it gets pretty loud!

Yelp
One of Birminghams oldest pubs, it's one of those places you go when you just want a cheap drink in a proper pub. Most bars charge around £5 for a glass of wine these days so I was happy when it only came to £2.45 - 2 for the price of 1 I thought! Inside, it's not the most stylish of venues but it does the trick and will be exactly what you expect from going to 'real pub'. This place is alright I guess if you're looking for a place to get a proper filling meal without the hefty price tab. If you're in between shopping then you should go for the burger, chips & a drink deal for £6.49. You can't really say fairer than that, perfect for a Saturday afternoon. If you happen to be in town on a Wednesday, they have a deal where you can get a steak and a drink for £6.99 which I've not seen on offer anywhere else before so definitely worth a try especially if you're trying to watch the pennies.

Yelp
The "Troc" is a cheap pub in the city centre that shows sports. It's actually really well placed (and it's cool exterior harks back to its history as a gin parlour) inside is comfy enough, nothing that is going to blow your socks off but it isn't offensive. Drink is pretty cheap for the city centre and the bar has a decent stock, nothing out of the ordinary though. Food wise it is really cheap, it used to be surprisingly cheap given the decent quality of the food, now however it isn't surprising, it's just cheap and probably not worth the low price (the menu is out of control, who is ordering noodle pots in a pub?). If you need to watch some sport in the city centre and don't want to spend much money you'll do well, if you want to go for lunch it's probably best to pass.

Yelp
I always liked the Troc for a cheap and simple pub meal. Things went a little downhill when they changed their menu a while ago. All the cheap pub chains feel the need to suddenly have katsu curry, burritos and 'loaded burgers' on their menus. I'm not going to the troc for a burrito realistically so I always stuck to hunters chicken, fish and chips or similar. These things are just what I want from a pub and they did them well and cheaply. Unfortunately, the giant menu seems to have now had an impact on the simple pub classics. When I visited yesterday, I chose the Hunters Chicken (chicken breast, bbq sauce, bacon and cheese). They've randomly started serving it on one of those sizzling boards with unnecessary chopped white onion on the bottom. Usually this cooks the onion through but today our plates turned up cold, so the onion was sad and soggy and the whole thing looked like it had been cooked hours ago, then topped with a bit of cheese and quickly grilled. The chicken was dry, the chips were too salty, there wasn't enough sauce and everything tasted of onion. I know it's only cheap and I'm not offended by cheap and cheerful pub grub but I am offended by cold, dry, actually bad food. Positives are still efficient staff and the beautiful entrance and cheap drinks.

Yelp
The Trocadero is probably one of the few "budget" pubs in the City Centre core. Now, by budget I mean it's still an OK pub - just not... great. It's reasonably tidy, it serves a fine drink at a decent price and the food is tolerable - I just personally wouldn't plan a night around a visit to the Troc. As previous reviews say, it's not a "stylish" or "modern" pub - it is just a pub. It's a decent place to grab a drink when heading out to other venues of an eve or if you are meeting someone pre dinner. The real selling point of this venue is the drinks prices. Now, most of the other reviews are pretty old but the prices haven't changed much. You're likely to get change from a tenner for 3 - 4 drinks - which you just can't grumble about. The clientele are a mix of tourists, locals and people out after work which means it's always a different crowd. Sometimes it can get quite loud and busy, but always at the times you would expect (evening and weekends). Again... I wouldn't ever plan a massive night out at the Troc, but I wouldn't mind grabbing a quick bite and a bargain pint if I was in the area and meeting a friend.

Yelp
As the other reviews suggest, this is a pretty cheap town centre pub. It's nothing special but good for a quick drink or a cheap pub meal. The outside is beautiful, it's a shame that they didn't try to mirror the style with the internal decor. I quite like the layout of the pub, it's a bit more interesting than a lot of bars and the back sections are nice. It has a lot of potential but could be easily ruined if it was modernised. I personally prefer this place to the Brier Rose for a budget pub but that's just personal taste. The staff here are fairly quick and friendly enough and they have a reasonable and varied selection of wines. The only down side was that a very shrill alarm kept going off but I doubt it's a regular occurrence. It's a pleasant enough pub in the city centre just up from Tescos so it's handy for meeting people (it's more or less between New Street and Snow Hill stations).

Yelp
It's great don't read the other reviews! They have great prices and a great staff. They offer super saver Mondays. Meaning you can get pints for £1.90 on certain beers and mix drinks ! They also have O2 wifi which is very nice if you are from outside the country.

Yelp
The real shame about this place is that the interior does not match the wonderful tiled front of the building. Inside it's a pretty bog-standard city centre boozer, and almost permanently dark due to the only windows being at the front, and the front of the building being permanently in the shade of the city. You'll find this place will get very busy before and after Aston Villa home games - this is very much a Villa pub, rather than a Blues pub - so if you don't fancy sharing a bar with football fans then it's best avoided on matchdays. They have live music occasionally also and the pub really isn't set up for that acoustically - essentially it's like having a loud and usually pretty average band playing in your living room. That said, there are worse places to go for a pint in town - much worse. It's a particularly good bolt hole at Christmas time when the city is heaving with far too many people and it dawns on you that unless you sit down and have a pint immediately, as in right this second, there will be trouble.

Yelp
This is a good value, friendly pub located very centrally, meaning it's great for somewhere to eat and drink on your lunch break from work, or when passing through town and in search of somewhere close to the station. Part of the same family of pubs that features The Shakespeare, the Trocadero serves decent food at a price that won't hurt your wallet. Nothing flash, but great when you're in a hurry. Good atmosphere, no hassle and very convenient.

Yelp
This pub in the city centre is very friendly and welcoming. It has recently been revamped and the last time I was in it was pretty full. The front of the pub has the feel of a standard pub with flat tables and further down there are more tables with more of a bar feel. They do regular pub food like burger and chips for the bargain price of £2.99, served pretty fast and with a smile. A local pub, not just for local peopleenjoy.

Yelp
Once again excellent grub and bear at a reasonable price. Had the classic mixed grill. Very tasty but could eat it again lol. Seriously very tasty 10/10 Jonathan had a piggy hot dog with pulled pork and pork sausages said his was tasty and Shahida had cod and chips. She said it was to much for her

Yelp
A pub with a unique front and a non -conformist pub name :) . I remember this pub when it was really tacky but was pleasantly surprised on this little pub crawl on my day off . Its clean , tidy , clientele seem ok , and for a bit of refreshment and a sit down its not too bad . Its the usual modern oldy feel but the bar looks authentic old . 5 real ales on at time but just the usual nationals but appear well kept .

Yelp
Once you get past the fact that this attractive, Grade II Iisted building absolutely reeks of urinals as you walk in, you will soon feel at home in this bustling and friendly pub. Much akin to a Wetherspoon's but with music and better food; this pub is best visited after work for a cheap dinner. The Troc was refurbished fairly recently and has a cosy/homely feel that is probably a little dangerous when combined with the crazy cheap food and drinks. Like Wetherspoon's they have a steak and curry club and you can also get beer and burger daily. I even think it might be slightly cheaper than the 'spoon's' fare. Unless you are a sports fan I'd avoid the Troc when the footy is on as it does get pretty rammed in there. The ladies toilets are spacious with lots of room to get changed for a night out and do your make up. I can't speak for the men's but it doesn't look good considering the smell on the way in! If you want to smoke you can either stand out the front or there's a back alley which is open for customers to use. No beer garden or pool tables. This is a simple place for a cheap meal or somewhere to watch the match. Just be sure to hold your nose on the way in.

Yelp
The Troc used to be a place to have a bit of aggro with opposing fans on match days. Not now, thankfully. Football colours are banned, and headgear, etc, and the place is more upmarket. 3 Real ales, inc Abbott & Timmy Taylors, not bad, in medium price range. Food served, typical chips'n'stuff. Too many tellies.
