Tunjung Ubud Retreat is tucked away in a very strategic location, right inside a small alley next to Ubud Palace. The alley itself is lined with souvenir stalls, which often makes people assume cars can’t enter. In reality, cars can access the property since the hotel has official permission and the local vendors are aware of it—though many online drivers are hesitant or unwilling to drive into the alley.
The hotel is located within the owner’s traditional Balinese house compound, and the setting is just as beautiful as you’d expect. During the service was five-star level. We arrived during heavy rain, and the front office staff immediately came out to pick us up, helped carry our luggage all the way to reception, provided umbrellas, and even assisted us again up to our room.
There are various room types available: some by the pool, garden view, some more hidden within the house compound, and others on lower levels. Every room comes with a balcony, complete with a table and chairs. The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable for two people. Each room is equipped with both a fan and air conditioner, as well as a refrigerator. The bathroom is also generously sized, with a very unique shower design, and thoughtful touches like a dedicated area to hang and dry towels.
The staff throughout the property are consistently friendly and helpful. Breakfast is available with menu options to choose from.
That said, there are a few things to be aware of. Cars cannot be parked on-site, as there is no car parking available—only parking for motorbikes. The access road is very narrow, so this might be inconvenient for some guests. There’s also no in-room phone to contact reception, meaning you’ll need to walk over in person if any issues come up. The Wi-Fi was a bit slow during the stay, and the pool is quite small and slightly unclean.
