I stopped here last Wednesday, a few hours after they opened. I was in the area and they were finally open when I was there. I've been here before and have had a pretty decent time, and when their pies are made fresh, they are normally quite well.
I got 2 chocolate chip cookies, 1 shortbread cookie, 1 banana cookie, and a piece of pecan pie.
First off, they only had a few pies available to be served as a slice. They were not out, or presented to the public and they were sliced back behind, in the baking area. ThIere is a reason for that I feel, which I will get to.
The whole pies, were over $33 a piece. THIRTY THREE DOLLARS for a whole pie.. Yeah, wow... Don't tell me about how pies are made, etc.. I make pies, cakes and cookies. That is too much for a pie, period. Especially when they can't serve a slice that is quality. People really need to get out more, taste things more and know quality vs cost.
There are other pie places around KC where they are UNDER priced for quality, not here.
The piece of pecan pie that I got, was old. This was a Wednesday. They had been closed for 3 days prior. When was this pie made!? Who knows, but they went ahead and charged me full price for the slice. The bottom crust was so saturated with goo, that it was non existent. Just paper thin goo that had melded into the pecan mixture. The pie filling itself had aged so much, that part of it had a toffee chewiness that could only be achieved by age. It had a slight off flavor as well. This was 100% not fresh baked pie, and was 100% full price. That is not okay. You are a pie shop, make fresh pies.
The 2 chocolate chip cookies were not for me, but I tasted a bit. They were okay, with an odd over sweetness to them.
The shortbread was thick and amazing. Super good and the best thing I tried there. Crumbly bite and soft texture. Really good.
The banana cookie, was lack luster. I remembered trying it, as soon as I bit into it. The cookie part smells great, but barely has any flavor. The icing is too sweet with the sweetness being the over all flavor. I get it, the icing is supposed to "sugar up" the cookie, but it doesn't work. Flavor up that cookie and tame down the icing sweetness and you may have something. The cookie was so moist it practically fell part, and then the icing was near rock hard (sugar).
I MAY go back sometime, but I feel "this place isn't for me" (as I can hear people reading this may say) .. And I'm 100% okay with that!
