The Usonian Inn was absolutely wonderful and authentically beautiful. If you are a Frank Lloyd Wright fan, this place is an absolute must. Rooms are charming, clean, and curated to the original aesthetics of mid-century design. After driving from Chicago, it felt great to walk around the property (barefooted to take in the soft grass of Spring Green, WI) to take in the sunset views, and serene, natural beauty. Carolina, the owner was very accommodating, helpful and an absolute delight. I was on a solo-trip, but can't wait to come back and visit with my husband.

I wasn’t going to write a review, but after reading some of these and after our stay, I feel we owe it to Carolina. ||First of all, some of the standards with people are beyond ridiculous. Those complaining about the reservation/check in process and not being waited on hand and foot need to understand something about what it means to run a privately owned establishment like this. Carolina is not just the owner, but she is the concierge, housekeeper, and office manager, all by herself She has to check in the guests, clean the rooms, and be available to guests’ needs, simultaneously…and somehow still have a life of her own outside of her job. ||The “invasive” and arduous process of getting a room and checking in is to protect her as a small business owner. She is not a chain of hotels, nor does she have the resources available to be able to take a corporate sized hit to her business. So when people disrespect the property or take more than what they use during their stay, it has a huge impact on her business. Taking all of the toilet paper, tissues, and sundries? Are you kidding me? What kind of person does that to a small business owner??||The “house rules” are valid because it’s HER HOUSE. Yes, we are paying guests, but that doesn’t mean we can just disregard the property and do whatever we want. She’s not your mom - be an adult and pick up after yourself. Leave the room as clean as when you checked in. The room was spotless and she works hard to keep it that way. Arrange a check in time so she knows approximately when to expect you and be as on time as possible. If you are going to he late due to circumstances outside your control, then stay in communication with her so she knows what’s going on. If you are scheduled to arrive in the afternoon, then be there. Don’t roll up eight hours later and get salty because she wasn’t there to let you in. Take responsibility. ||Also, this is a historic property. If you want updated everything then go find a Hilton. The entire point of staying in a place like this is to enjoy its vintage architecture and charm. ||Carolina contacted us more than once to check if we needed anything. She recommended an amazing restaurant and we had the best time. We originally tried to stay three other places, but they were booked. We’re actually glad we landed at the Usonian because we had a lovely stay and Carolina was a gracious and wonderful host. ||All that just to say, if you’re a snowflake princess and hate a cultured personality, you’ll probably be disappointed in your stay. No one should cater to that. But if you enjoy historical architecture, supporting small businesses, and being in a quiet, clean, and relaxing space, then the Usonian Inn is the place for you. ||Carolina, we loved our stay. We will be back! ||Love, |Mindy & Deej

We picked this motel because of its proximity to the House on the Rock, a destination my college-touring daughter wanted to see. It was very convenient, and a relaxing place to stay.||This place bills itself as the only Usonian-style motel in the world. It is a small property, but charming and quiet. The styling is reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright, as it was inspired by the nearby Taliesin home of Wright's. A student of Wright's helped with a renovation in the 1990s.||Our room had two beds, an in-wall air-conditioner, radiant heat (which we didn't need), a nice view of trees and bushes in the back of the motel, and a bathroom with a walk-in shower and a dual-flush toilet.||There is only one cleanser in the shower instead of the triple shampoo/conditioner/body-wash dispensers you see in some hotels. If you want to have a more varied cleaning routine, you should bring your own items. The towels provided are very thick, however.||Privacy in the parking-lot side of the motel is provided by translucent boxes, screened on the bottom, to let in light and air without the risk of anyone peeking in.||WiFi is provided. There was a TV in the room, but we didn't use it, so I don't know how varied it is. Also in the room are several guides to local attractions and restaurants.||We were recommended Anita's Café for breakfast, but we had leftovers from our great dinner at the Old Feed Mill restaurant in Mazomanie, about 20 minutes away. The motel room had a microwave and a refrigerator.||The digital clock on the night stand provided two USB type-A ports, so my daughter and I were able to charge our phones overnight at the same time, while still having them in reach.||The setting and quality have made me start planning a return visit.

DO NOT STAY HERE!!! I was told I could check in early and when I arrived I had to use the bathroom. I was told there was not a public bathroom, and I could not check in early. I later returned and checked in. After I got my stuff in my room I went into the office to get ice and was told people like me slow her (the manager) down. She has laundry and cleaning to do. She locks up early then you cant get any ice. I checked out early.(8:00 am) I went to return my key and she would not let me hand it to her. She made me lay it on the tray. People in town warned me she was strange. I called later because she charged me for two people in the room and she called me a sicko for moving the pillows off the bed and onto a clothes rack, and using the Kleenex. Very strange lady.

We actually didn't go to the hotel and canceled our reservation a month before we were due to stay there. I received an email stating the following. ||"AS previously stated in our communication emails, anytime cancellation entails you forfeiting the amount deposit that was retained within the initial booking, no amount is refundable at any time."||So just be aware of the "House Rules". No refunds at all if you need to cancel your reservation so make sure you are able to go!!

I can’t use my real name because the proprietor of this establishment is not stable and I would fear for mine and my family’s safety if I were to even hint at my name or location. Suffice it to say that should you visit this establishment, you should check every regular, normal expectation of how to be treated as a hotel guest at the door. No matter what you do, the owner will criticize and scrutinize your actions. The owner will look for every opportunity to upcharge you, criticize you, make your visit inconvenient, and call you a liar. It is an absolute travesty that the potential this place holds is hostage to this person. Please think twice about coming here because it’s just not worth it.

Stayed for a small weekend vacation. The motel check was painless and the office staff were very warm and welcoming to us. The motel was quiet both during the day and at night. From a historical perspective the architecture is sure to make any Wright fan geek out. We loved the interior design of the room too. By the end of our weekend we did not want to leave!

My wife and I stayed here recently to visit The House on the Rock, (only a 10 minute drive). The room had a wonderful retro feel to it. Very clean, very cozy including an electric fireplace, minifrige, microwave, TV cable. But the real hidden gem is the bathroom. Giant bath, Modern stand up shower with full body jets. Carolina even put together a basket of wine and cheese for us when she found out it was our anniversary. She was very quick to respond to any questions i had. I was able to check-in online from start to finish.

Yelp
My husband and I decided to take a long weekend and visit The House on the Rock and The Cave on the Mounds for our third wedding anniversary. Knowing I love vintage and unique he had found the Usonian via Vrbo. This motel was absolutely adorable! It was extremely clean and cozy. Carolina was so very friendly and even did something very special for us, when we went into our room she has put up a "congratulations" banner - it was something so small but it made us feel very welcome. We definitely will be booking again!

Yelp
Do not stay here. Overgrown landscaping, dark office with no attendants, outdated. Some of the rooms may be better than others, I wish we would have seen the room before committing. After seeing it and feeling it did not meet expectations, the owner would not accept that we didn't want to stay, kept our $160 and said "that's business". I would have even understood keeping part of our payment for the inconvenience, but all of it? Come on. We left and she just got $160 for nothing. Sketchy. The owner takes copies of IDs and requires specific check in times. Not very hospitable.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed the night after visiting nearby Taliesin. The Usonian is right off the main highway on the north side of Spring Green. We were assigned room 7 of perhaps 10 or 12 in total. We arranged everything in advance via email and arrived around dinner time. The room is surprisingly modern and unexpected based on the outside. As we entered, the bathroom was to the left with a shower. The shower was awesome with plenty of power and hot water. Soap is dispensed from a wall mounted unit and shampoo provided in packets. Opposite the bathroom was a high top table and next to it a nice red leather recliner. A highlight for me. The king size bed was straight ahead with two nightstands that lacked power. There was a large flat screen TV with cable service. Tucked in the corner was a mini fridge and microwave. Overall our stay was fine. There is some road noise that seeps in but not anything disturbing. The letdown was the bed. The mattress was concave shaped and we both tended to roll together in the middle. The springs most annoyingly squeaked with any movement.

Yelp
This place is a complete scam. I paid for a king sized bed and ended up getting 2 fulls instead. If I were to explain the feel of this place it feels like someone took a motel from a horror movie and said "yea this would be great". The caretaker of the place was rude to both myself and my friend who stayed in a different room. I will NEVER come back to this place. Once you book a room at this place they will immediately charge your card and will also refuse to give you any sort of refund its almost like they know how awful their INN is. Ontop gof that they take so much of your personal information over the phone and through their website that i was scared my identity would be stolen. I ended up leaving a day early only to have to spend more money to book somewhere else because of how shady this place is. I am VERY upset with the whole experience. Just be warned the pictures that they have on their site when you book and the place are not at all what they actually look like. The first 2 pictures are from my booking and what the room was SUPPOSED to look like andnthe rest after are what the room ACTUALLY looks like. Needless to say im very disappointed and what they are doing here is NOT ok.

Joy A.

Yelp
Gross. And someone came into my room when I wasn't present-even though I had a privacy note on the door knob. I don't trust this place. You can stay literally anywhere else in Spring Green

Yelp
AVOID this place! Sure, it's an interesting historical site - but that isn't worth the petty unprofessional manager and her inappropriate and poor communication. I made my reservation less than 12 hours before our expected arrival. So when I received the email "request" to register all guests online, I decided against it. I figured why should I do what no other hotel requires, when they could simply easily verify our IDs when we arrived to check in. What's more, my wife had gone to work so I couldn't complete the online registration because it requires a selfie (downloading a photo instead is NOT an option.) What the email didn't say is that check-in times were limited, or that they require you to register online because they have no intention of staffing the office so no one will be there when you arrive. This even though we arrived at 6:30pm on a Friday in the summer! My first indication that there was a problem was when I received a phone call from the manager at 5pm, something I thought highly unusual. She asked when we planned to arrive and I was vague because I was on vacation mode and wasn't sure of where we'd be stopping along the way, and because my wife was shopping while I waited for her, so it wasn't possible for me to get her input. Silly me - I figured when I had made a reservation that was enough, and that an appointment for a specific time wasn't necessary - just as it wasn't required at any other hotel. The motel manager apparently didn't think that was reasonable and she scolded me, saying she felt "we need better communication." Which is totally ironic because when I said I didn't know when we'd arrive, she didn't tell me that no one would be there when we arrived only 90 minutes later! Instead, she complained that I hadn't responded to her message from an hour before (I was driving and didn't see the email) and insisted that we complete the online check-in and reply when we knew what time we would be arriving. After my wife returned from shopping and we discussed this abrasive hotel manager and what time we might arrive, I responded to her message via Booking.com. She responded half an hour later that no one would be there when we arrived - but I didn't get that message because I was driving. And when I did arrive at the motel, there was no cell service available so I couldn't see her email, nor could I even phone or text her. Talk about frustrating! I managed to find wifi at the public library in town and completed the online registration, then messaged her that I had done so. I added that there was no phone service or internet available so it would be difficult to communicate but that I expected to be able to access my room. Deciding against waiting in the rain, we went to a local restaurant to get dinner (and hopefully some wifi!) The hotel manager then replied to my message most inappropriately, saying "How do I know I rx u? How can I write me? (Sic) We had the entire day to take care of this. You'll find a way." WTF!!! So at this point I was pretty angry. Instead of being helpful, she was scolding me and passive/aggressively withholding the information I needed on how to get into our room. I replied to her message angrily that I didn't need to be lectured and that I regretted making this reservation but that I expected immediate access to our room and had found wifi at a restaurant. Only then did she reply that our room was unlocked so we could enter at any time. To top it off, the next morning I received a message that the motel reported we had failed to check in. I then received a confirmation from Booking.com that our room had been canceled - despite the fact that we had slept in it and still occupied the room. I began to wonder if it was safe for us to leave our belongings in the room, for fear that we would be locked out upon our return. What I didn't figure out until later was that she presumably canceled it on Booking.com's system so that I wouldn't be able to to leave a review. NEVER. STAY. HERE!! P.S. the room has a strong unpleasant musty odor.

Yelp
The Usonian Inn is one of my absolute favorite places to stay! I don't even know where to begin... so much good to say! The Inn itself was built by JC Caraway, student of Frank Lloyd Wright. As the name suggests, it is true usonian architecture, with touches of FLW all around. The owner, Carolina, has carefully and tastefully renovated and restored the structure, room by room while keeping true to its original beauty and integrity. Bathrooms are spa-like. The rooms are warm, cozy and peaceful. Added amenities such as a flat screen TV, fridge, microwave and coffee maker come standard in each room, and it feels like home. Carolina keeps the rooms spotless. It's one of the absolute cleanest hotels I've ever stayed in. She goes out of her way to make sure you are comfortable & happy. She is always willing to give helpful tips and advice about the restaurants, theaters and other things to do in the area. Carolina takes pride in the property and it truly shows, inside and out. Beautiful landscaping surrounds the motel on all sides. An added bonus... the lobby offers imported beer and wine for sale and other items to make your stay more relaxing. I've stayed at this hotel three times now. Each time I like it even better than the last. A trip to Spring Green would not be the same staying anywhere else. The Usonian is loaded with charm and character. It's one of my "happy places", where I feel like I can rest and relax without worry. All the rooms are slightly different. (All nice!) We got a tour of recently renovated Room 5 and we absolutely fell in love with it. We plan to stay in it on our next visit. I highly and sincerely recommend the Usonian Inn!

Dorothy C.

Yelp
BEWARE of owner attempting to PERIOD SHAME you if you leave anything less than a glowing review. (And please note, both my sister and I are well past our menstruating days. ) Clearly the owner needs some work with customer service, regardless of the state of the Inn. Proceed with caution. My review as posted elsewhere. I gave the Usonian 3 out of 5 stars: I wanted to love this Given its ties to Frank Lloyd Wright, my sister and I sought out this lodging for our Wisconsin architecture tour. We had high hopes it would complement our Taliesin/House on the Rock/10 Chimneys tour, with emphasis on the first stop. Unfortunately, it was more of a House on the Rock inn--ended with weirdness. The innkeeper was friendly and talkative and offered many suggestions for dining. The room itself was okay--a bit stuffy with not nearly enough outlets (as in none--had to unplug stuff for our chargers, curling irons, etc. I realize this is a retro inn, but they could have put in a couple power strips for guest's use.) I wish the windows didn't have a kind of industrial wavy plastic covering on them, both for aesthetics and for the ability to bring some fresh air into the room. I would have given the inn 4 stars for its retro factor if we hadn't come back our last night to this (see pic). It was as if Goldilocks had been by to check out the bed. We didn't follow up with manager as it was late and we were seriously hoping that housekeeping had simply been in the process of making up the bed when they were suddenly called away. Anyway, that's our story and we're sticking to it! The location is great, the owner friendly, the place historical. There's just a weird vibe that may or may not be to your liking. And then I received this email from the owner: I know we are not a perfect place and not to everybody liking and 100% of your expectations, however, a historic place has it's flaws. I am about to respond to your review on trip advisor and the "simple request" is: do you really want me to post this for the entire world to see it? Dear Dorothy, We appreciate you taking the time to write this review; we enjoyed having you here. A historic place with be limited to some things; improvement were done as necessary to make the place functional but not your suite you pay $$$$ as in a new building. We don't want to overwhelm the place with power strips because we already have people say we have to much of it. We didn't design on windows finishes on the outdoor and YES that is original design and materials, they will stay with the building for the rest of its life as required by the Historical Society certain finishes and design has to REMAINS AS IS. Sorry, if you don't understand historical facts, it's nothing for me to do here. By the way, all our windows are operable and you can do cross ventilation because we have screens on all of them; again the plastic cover is for privacy and used as a finish design. I'm glad you put the photo because the story behind it is this. someone in your party had their period (I realized that the next day when the flat sheet had more, and more stains) and the sheet was stained. I personally took the time and bleached it on the spot, it was your last night and I was not going to change it for one little spot. I might've gotten distracted or let it dry with the intention to go finish up and then i forgot, it was too late when I realized you already have returned, - so is life in this business sometimes. This is how you do your dirty laundry in public. Thank you for sharing. About the weird vibe, this is the first time I heard of it! My place is blessed and my guests are prayed for. Nobody died here and we are a first class operation of this kind! Sincerely, Carolina D/Management LET ME KNOW WHEN DO YOU WANT ME TO POST THIS RESPONSE TO YOUR REVIEW. I hope this is fair! Travel well, stay well! Thank you for your business. Your hostess, Carolina D

Yelp
We stayed at The Uson(i)an Inn about two years ago and we rated it 4 our of 5 stars. Sadly, it is still on the market with First Weber and it seems that it is going downhill. The first thing that I noticed was that the "i" in "Usonian" was missing from the sign (not to mention that the sign needs a fresh coat of paint). When we stayed here in 2014, the grounds were immaculate. They seemed a bit overgrown this time. The blacktop is cracked and grass/weeds are growing up through it. The WiFi remains VERY unreliable. We'll probably stay somewhere else in Spring Green or Mineral Point when we return later in the summer.

Kate J.

Yelp
Very cool and cozy historical treasure! Stayed in room 5, was clean, quiet and nicely updated, but kept it's original charm right on par. Carolina, the owner, was lovely and has added a lot of thoughtful touches throughout. The location is perfect for hiking, walking and is a great spot to see all the sights from. My husband and I look forward to coming back soon!

Donn L.

Yelp
A surprisingly poor experience. I found an uncooperative and argumentative operator. Booked a king bed for the night and found a room w unpainted plywood ceilings and no WiFi. It's a small property so I thought canceling the transaction would be a simple solution. After an extended argument and a refusal to refund our money we accepted a different room. It was ok. Looking for an overnight getaway w dinner at a supper club, instead we felt hassled. Needless to say we will not return.

Christine F.

Yelp
The Usonian Inn is a hidden gem located on the beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright Trail surrounded by gorgeous Wisconsin views. The owner, Carolina, recently renovated the entire property. The rooms are very clean and quite cozy. I was treated with respect from the moment I booked my stay until the time I was checking out. I would give a 10/10 recommendation.

Toni S.

Yelp
The service here is outstanding! Nicest people! The rooms are very clean & are updated but still show the Frank Lloyd Wright theme. Love the King room!!!

Stephan B.

Yelp
Stayed for 1 night while attending a play at Players Theater, very clean and comfortable. I am a Wright fan so staying in a motel designed by one of his apprentices was a plus. The owners have maintained the historical nature of the building. Staff was very friendly and offered great food recommendations. A good choice if you want to avoid a cookie cutter motel or the nearby hype of the House on the Rock.

Karen S.

Yelp
Wonderful to live in a little bit of history while on a Frank Lloyd Wright pilgrimage. The rooms are sufficient and bathrooms newly updated. Wi-fi and phones didn't work, but the locals say they all have that problem. The location is near most everything to do in Spring Green, and there is a lot. This tiny town is loaded with charm, good, healthy food and more kind and friendly residents than should be legal, small town ambiance at its best. Mayberry it's not, but maybe it's our generation's answer to Utopia. I certainly will return, both to the town and the Usonian Inn. BTW; the Usonian is for sale, but don't anyone change a thing other than to get it on the grid.

Ken M.

Yelp
My wife and I stayed here during our visit to Taliesin East and it is the perfect accommodations for a Frank Lloyd Wright pilgrimage. The room was clean and comfortable. The owner could not have been friendlier or more helpful. It was truly a joy to find this gem on our travels.

Danford A.

Yelp
Nice clean place that we recommend. My wife found the Usonian on Yelp. Not many reviews at that time but what was there was good. (The room had some extra stools that didn't do much but take up space so the room could have felt bigger.) But over all the value is very good and we enjoyed our stay.

Mike A.

Yelp
Spent the night here while touring Taliesin. Nice, comfortable spot although not plush. Very friendly manager. Room was clean and large enough. Price was reasonable, too.

Alan G.

Yelp
What a fun place. Caroline is so helpful and clearly takes pride in how they finished off the hotel. What a comfortable and warm reception.

A M.

Yelp
This place was great. We stayed one night over labor day weekend and really enjoyed it. The best part about this place is that it is a historic hotel. If you are someone who equates old with bad, and new with good, then do not stay here. The room we had was charming and had all the comforts we wanted. The owners did a great job to update the place in all the best ways (great renovated bathrooms, new AC units, new storm windows) without altering the historic charm. They go beyond what you would expect from a motel. Each room has an outdoor table and 2 chairs in front, for example. Also, one forgets how convenient it is to stay in a motel with your car so easily accessible right out your door. It made packing and unpacking a breeze. The Usonian Inn is a great place to stay if you are in Spring Green for Taliesin, American Players Theatre, or another local attraction. We highly recommend this motel for couples travelling through, but the room we stayed in would likely be too small for more than 2 people.

Michael H.

Yelp
This motel was designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright so its look is very unique. Very simple. That said the rooms were very clean and the bathroom was brand new. Newer flat screen TV too. Located very near the well known sites of Spring Green. It is also located near a bicycle trail ....The WiFi works but you have to move the computer around to find the best spot. Memorable motel.

Bob H.

Yelp
Beautiful small motel immaculately maintained. Designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. The owner was wonderful. The view is of cornfields but what else would one want in Wisconsin. Close to the downtown area and House on the Rock. The shower was one of the best I have ever used.

Tj W.

Yelp
I stayed there due to the Frank Lloyd Wright tie in. His influence definetly shows. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Downside was the room condition. It was a bit shabby and need of a renovation. The ceiling was peeling and the paintwork a bit less than professional. Power strip extension cords run everywhere. I understand the place is for sale and hopefully the new owners will spend a little bit to spruce it up.

Yelp
WORST mp management Anywhere! This last weekend my family and I were having a large wedding for my sister. Due to the size we had to book various hotels in all of Spring Green. A week before the wedding we realized that we needed another room so we contacted the Usonian Inn and they booked us. Less than 5 days later we attempted to cancel it but they refused. This was completely fine and we understood that it was short notice. Like many weddings people were drinking and to keep people safe we used a bus service to drive people to their hotels. Unfortunately for us people got off at the wrong spot and 9 people had to stay in 1 room for 20 minutes until the bus came around again. Within this incredibly narrow period of time the owner/proprietor called over 3 different times to complain about the amount of people despite knowing we were in the process of fixing the problem. While on the phone Carolina was extremely rude, disrespectful and argumentative even though we were a very quiet group with no music, television and barely any conversations. In the time it took for the next bus to come, 1 of our guests became ill and another fell asleep. Because of this when are ride showed up an additional person stayed behind at the Usonian to take care of the sick person. At this time 6 of us left the Usonian and 3 stayed behind 1 who was sick, 1 who was asleep and 1 who was taking care of the other two which seemed fine since there was 2 beds in the room. This clearly seemed like a solution to us but within the hour Carolina showed up at our room with a police officer waking the 3 of us up. At this time she searched our room to look for people and circled the premises convinced she would find more. After finding no one else and realizing the police officer was on our side, Carolina only became more and more aggressive, argumentative and rude. During the night our sick friend vomited and unfortunately it was on the bed. Clearly this was accidental, but it caused a stain on a single white sheet of an area around a square foot. In the morning we departed around 8am where we were greeted yet again with the horrible personality of Carolina who informed us she would charge an additional $10 for the extra person and an additional fee for the sheet. This all seemed very reasonable and despite her atrocious attitude and poor service we were willing to pay. Later that day after we looked at our bank statement it appeared that the additional fee for a single white sheet was &50!!!! This completely blew our minds so we called the inn and was greeted with Carolina yet again who was clearly in her default state of being rude, angry, and disrespectful to customers. While trying to decipher the meaning of her "incidental fee" she stated something along the lines of, "I don't have to explain to you what I charge you for." This statement alone sent us over the deep end and we hung up on her, during each encounter where Carolina seemed to make random fees and payments up out of thin air she repeatedly referenced an email that stated this even though no such thing was ever sent or stated on the phone. Overall, Carolina called us and harassed us repeatedly, called the police on us, made up ridiculous charges without any explanation and treated everyone that was in contact with her horribly. Due to her behavior we would never in a million years go back to the Usonian Inn which was already an overpriced hotel which looked nothing like its pictures. By the end of the day we ended up spending a total of 6 hors at the Inn and we're charged over $200 to receive the worst customer service treatment of my entire life. My recommendation is that you never spend any amount of time at the Usonian, at the very least while Carolina is in charge. Instead maybe try sleeping in your car or even on a bed of glass because staying anywhere else would be a much more enjoyable experience.
