The Vandy opened its doors earlier this year (Jan 23'), making it one of the latest additions to the growing list of cocktail bars in St. Louis. It is located across from Rockwell Brewing Co. in an understated building that previously served as an office space for a local construction company. While the space is completely renovated inside and out, the owners maintained the original charm of the building by keeping the original exterior signage, which reads "John B. Gutmann Construction Co." This makes it a bit of a challenge to find initially, but contributes to the feel that the Vandy is a well kept secret among locals.
The drink list features an array of classic and signature cocktails that reflect the full spectrum of spirits, liqueurs and bitters. In an effort to switch it up, I ordered the Street Chicken (Jagemeister, Wahaka Mezcal Resposado, Nixta Elote, Coco Lopez, Pineapple, Malic Acid). This cocktail was exceptionally crafted and is perfectly suited to fall due to its creamy texture and rich flavors of vanilla and caramel. If you're in the mood for tastings instead of cocktails, the Vandy also has a large collection of select whiskey on display that is available for 1oz pours, flights or for purchase.
The only downsides to the Vandy are that 1) there is no designated parking, therefore street parking is the only parking option and 2) the Vandy does not have its own kitchen. However, to overcome this issue, the bar often collaborates with local businesses to bring food to guests. Overall, the Vandy is a great addition to the cocktail scene in St. Louis and I am looking forward to more visits to come!
