The 6 Best Hotels in Melbourne

"Housed in a building established in 1880, this historic three-star hotel has a traditional, grand feel with Art Deco décor in the lobby and restaurant; the restaurant offers a breakfast buffet as well as lunch and dinner. The property provides useful amenities like a fitness center, a heated plunge pool, and a sauna, and the rooms are simple, comfortable, and minimalist to maximize space. I appreciate that there are single rooms for budget-conscious solo travelers; rooms include a flatscreen TV, tea and coffee-making facilities, a mini-fridge, and a small workspace, and bathrooms are clean with either a walk-in shower or a shower/tub combination. I think it’s the best option for travelers looking for a comfortable, budget-friendly stay in the city center." - Matthew Kepnes

Dont let the website photos fool you - gross, cheap and dated in extreme need of updating and renovating or at the very least proper wall to floor deep cleaning. For godsake get rid of those dank feature pillows on the bed which I felt like I needed gloves on to remove! Reception staff (blonde male) can only be described as sullen and less than welcoming, bad first impression!!! Try smiling for a start! Got to room and it was gross - scuff marks all over all walls, old stained toilet seat, mouldy shower, musty/mouldy smelling carpet as was 3rd floor foyer leading to room and in room. The bedside tables and furniture are extremely dated and scuffed, ready for rubbish tip. Photos look lovely but don't be deceived- the rooms rate right up there with a cheap Motel! Initially asked for a late check out but the rude receptionist said not available! Thank God I didn't get one after seeing the room! Asked for room change and got a double room on 1st floor and only difference was the size, slightly cleaner shower suite and newer toilet seat. On one bed wall you could see dry dripmarks like sparkling wine had sprayed on wall and dripped down. They use the same product for both body wash and hair shampoo and the 5 usb port don't work. Cheap and nasty all the way, couldn't wait to leave!

Great location and good, friendly service. We had heritage king, with a sad view. I guess we got what we paid for lol. Alice at reception was great! Great, clean hotel for a stay in the cbd

The location is good and close to the train and trams. Only a short walk to the shops, depending on what you are looking for there is plenty of dining places and bars. I have stayed here a few times now and I’m coming back in a week, so highly recommend it for what it offers and the star rating that it has.

Lovely hotel close to the heart of the city with easy walking access or a quick jump on the tram. Restaurant and lounge are top notch as well. Jacob at the front desk saved us many headaches when we were delayed in the States by his quick and courteous help with changing our booking!

Nice hotel and a good price for central Melbourne; room was spacious however with only one single smallish window. Bathroom was very clean and functional; shower was two taps rather than than one mixer. Carpet in the room was a little tired and wearing thin near some areas. Comfortable large bed and good sized working desk. No complaints at all

We had a late check-in because our flight was delayed got in and the Bed was broken. Both the front legs on the left side of the bed were snapped rang down to Reception in the morning to get it fixed all that night we had banging had absolutely no sleep from the laundry trolleys. The next day we realise that there were stains all over the carpet. The arm on the chair was broken and one of the lights wouldn’t stop flickering every night around 3 am we got woken up by loud banging bottles being thrown outside. This was them apparently cleaning linen coming through just could not get a good night sleep which is basically what you’re paying for a room for.

We stayed at the Victoria Hotel last night. We started with a drink in the courtyard in the afternoon, followed by dinner in the hotel restaurant. All staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. This food was exceptional, imaginative, excellent quality and reasonably priced. We were very impressed and will definitely return again. Had a great stay – just a little too short this time.

We regularly stay at the victoria hotel when visiting family and friends. We have great experience unlike this time. The room did not look at all like what we booked. Bathroom tiles were not cleaned properly. The window is above the rubbish compactors. Woken up to a one am truck delivery!! Freezer section in fridge was not defrosted.
