The Vintage House Hotel, Douro

Perfectly located hotel for a Pinhão weekend. The rooms are a bit dated, but still charming, clean, and comfortable. There is a beautifully amazing scent in the hallways - wish I knew what it was. The breakfast was fine - nothing special but sufficed. The service overall was pretty disappointing though. I don’t come across a single staff member who seemed to care about my experience. If this is something that matters to you, be aware. For me, it’s not the end of the world. The location, comfort, and cleanliness are more important.

Our stay at The Vintage House Hotel was excellent from start to finish. The property is exceptionally well organized and set on beautiful, peaceful grounds right along the river—truly a postcard setting. The staff were consistently friendly, attentive, and professional, and the rooms were immaculate and very comfortable. Everything felt calm, clean, and thoughtfully run, which made it easy to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The location is ideal—close to several wine tours and river activities—and the walk along the dock is an absolute must, especially in the morning or at sunset. It’s one of those places where simply being there is part of the experience. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the Douro Valley who wants comfort, scenery, and easy access to the region’s highlights. Edit: Breakfast at Salão do Rio, tucked inside the Vintage House Hotel, was a highlight of our stay. The food was fresh and genuinely excellent—thoughtfully prepared and consistently satisfying. Service was impeccable without being fussy, and the coffee was strong in the best possible way (the kind that actually wakes you up). We had breakfast here twice, and both times it delivered. When a place gets repeat visits right, it’s doing something very right.

Very amazing place. The entrance is at the right right after the train tracks. A lot of history and related decorations. The people are very friendly and welcoming. I just went for a celebration lunch. The food is very tasty, gourmet, and luxurious. Can't recommend enough this place. Price wise quite affordable for the extreme quality.

We stayed here for 3 nights in early October 2025. It was wonderful. Our room was huge and lovely. The restaurant and bar were great. Super breakfast. Great location for exploring the region. Best was the staff....so friendly and helpful. This place is a special treat....you should go!

When 1st arriving to the hotel the view is grand on the river and the hotel is very nice. The layout of the hotel is very unique and the only reason for not giving it a 5 star review: no gym, sauna, jacuzzi or spa. Nice outdoor swimming pool, bar service at the pool and a relaxing area in the shade with tables. Tennis court in the back, we did not use but looked very nice. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The bad: There are different room buildings that you have to go outside to access. There were 2 wait staff for pool service-- a young man and a young lady who were very nice and helpful But whoever the older man is (I guess their manager) at the bar needs a lesson in manners, what a jerk! I had a bottle of wine (yes it was open but corked), I did not even have a glass, the man looked me and then walking off shouted very loud that will be 10 euros! Unprofessional as I was showing to others in our group of 27 adults on a tour (by the way who had purchased drinks from the bar) a bottle of wine from the vineyard we just left and I was going to give it to another person in our group. I guess my point is there always a nice or professional way to say there would be a corking fee if I planned on drinking an outside beverage, instead of talking to me as if I were a child and shouting across the area. Overall, very nice hotel, a little pricey but nice, would not make a special trip here but if we were in the area we would use again.

This hotel has great views and a lovely exterior. But…our experience left us less than enthusiastic. For such an expensive stay and restaurant the staff should have been much better trained. The staff in large part seemed dutifully confused as to their jobs and were on their phones a lot. Our room was a hot hellscape because they turned off the HVAC. It also smelled like cat urine. The restaurant was quite good but expensive and a come hungry leave hungry experience.

The hotel is beautiful, and the view gorgeous. After your arrival you get two welcome drinks, only the bartender who serves you, wasn’t pleasant. The rest was nice. I did really like the Brazilian girl who serves amazing breakfast. The breakfast was TOP.

The Vintage House (an old port warehouse, I believe) is right of the main street in Pinhao, between the river and the train tracks (don't worry, there are only a few small tourist trains per day). It may be the only hotel in town.|It is quite a lovely hotel. Nice rooms, very nice public rooms, view of the river, great service, etc. |We used it as a base for hiking, but if yiou are interested in wine, this is a great place to use as a base for wine touring. It seems like every Portugese winery you've ever heard of has a presence in or near Pinhao.

Fabulous portugal hotel in the heart of wine/port country. Truly spectacular! Classic hotel with the BEST staff you will find in Portugal. Very accommodating and anxious to make your stay memorable and special. Hotel is immaculate. Every detail has been addressed; breakfast selections are excellent and fresh, starched white bed sheets, comfortable and FIRM mattress, ample drinking water in rooms along with coffee/tea/espresso, face towels, bright lighting and lamps, highly efficient A/C. My experience: shipping costs of libations are cheaper here than at nearby wineries AND they have a huge selection in the lobby. Of note: don't get locked out on your patio - I did. Also, bathroom mirror is totally see through, similar to a 3 dimensional holograph. Interesting, but I need a mirror. In closing, you will love this spectacular experience if you're looking for a vineyard/winery experience.

It is supposed to be a five star hotel. However, it is only worthy of one star! The mattress was so soft that we woke up with sore backs. The shower was broken and we called to complain the first morning. After getting back to the room late at night, we expected the shower to be fixed but it was not. The concierge said that they "could do nothing with our rate as we paid the room with a travel agent". We did not. We used their website! So instead they promised us a "small gift" which was a $15 bottle of olive oil. A total disgrace. Plus the hotel is located feet away from the train tracks and the train runs all night long. The hotel actually vibrates when the train goes by.

Stunning. Absolutely stunning! This hotel is located in the Douro Valley of Portugal and its location makes it the perfect weekend getaway or a place to celebrate a special celebration. I was lucky enough to get up graded to a suite which was a large bedroom with a king bed and balcony, a living area with another balcony and a large bathroom. And it overlooked the river so I could watch the tour boats lazily make their way up the river. There are grounds to wander, a pool to swim in and a walkway along the river that makes a nice day just that much better. The service in this hotel is top notch. Ask for something and someone will run and get it immediately. My problem was I kept getting lost as it rambles and has several different levels so I was always asking for help to get to where I needed to be. The restaurant has a wonderful chef who prepares amazing dishes. I had breakfast and dinner here and you couldn't go wrong with anything on the menu. And the best part? A Portugal hotel who knows that Americans like to drink a lot of coffee in the morning so I got my own pot on the table! Yay for me! The town that this is in doesn't have much going for it . . .the best restaurant in town is in the hotel but you can walk to the train station or to the small shops. All in all this place is luxury in the Douro Valley. Check it out while sipping some of the local wines that grow all over this valley!

Posting this at 1am via cell service due to extremely spotty Wi-Fi in the hotel. Noise is unbearably bad here and makes it impossible to sleep. Been listening to these horrible boat engines booming all through dinner, during drinks, and now at 1am. The hotel is gorgeous but it's a total gamble coming here as they are directly over a dock with boats running engines sometimes 24/7 and apparently no noise laws regarding the boats. Maybe you will get lucky but I'm miserable here.

The location of this hotel is excellent, you have balconies that face the river and mountains, it really makes for a great view. The grounds are expansive, lots of outside space, pool, bar, restaurant but things are just not kept up or updated to qualify for the rating they boast. Carpet that is stained should be replaced in hallways and rooms, things should be modernized and higher quality throughout. The AC did not work, and it gets hot in the Douro, this was a huge letdown. Rooms: It was more country house than a luxury. The bed was not comfortable, it was hard and we had to add comforters to soften it up, also it was two twins moved together, I know it's a Europen thing but if you claim to be five stars than have queen mattresses. The AC did not work, the room was never cold enough and this area gets very hot, no fan in the bathroom so it took 15 minutes for the steam to evaporate. The bathroom was dated, no counter space, cheap tub, and rough robes and towels. The outlet did not support the hairdryer, so I had to dry my hair at the desk by the bed. Closet space was not well thought out and we basically had our suitcases on the floor, which was hard since the room was pretty small. The doors slam and you can hear them across the halls. The food: Breakfast was OK, although they did not know how to make poached eggs, would have been nice to have an individual hot menu and items to order. Freshly squeezed juices would be nice too. If you're claiming you're a five-star hotel, you need to go above and beyond and have the wow factor. Dinner was mediocre and overpriced, given we had excellent food in the region, this was a letdown. The dining room is dated, feels like grandmas house and does not take advantage of the view. Don't waste your time on dinner here. Service: They do try, but the staff is young and disorganized. We had to ask for help with our luggage. Making reservations at wineries should be an easy thing for them, yet they seemed a bit lost and lacking the experience to make suggestions. They should have a concierge that does this all day long. When we asked them to pre-order a taxi they said no problem, we come down there is no taxi and no one called. This is not five-star service, but given there is no competition in the area and they seem to cater to an older crowd they just don't have to try that hard. If you come here with the expectation of a great view and a four-starish experience you won't be disappointed and it was really nice to stay in a town and be able to take a walk, boat tour, walk to the neighborhood bar or shop, but this was not a five-star hotel.

We made reservations for lunch because we were not able to stay in the hotel itself. The location and view are both stunning! However The service was super slow and the food was not good for the amount we paid. We paid almost €200 for 2 couverts( cold bread plus olive oil), four entrées plus 1 bottle of wine plus 2 starters. For starters we got vegetable soup and squid stuffed with salmon (both were bland and not flavorful) . For entrées we got grilled octopus which was supposed to be super tender but was overcooked and dry, duck Megret, pork, and sea bream. , our entrees ranged from 23 to 27 euros for lunch size portions. All the food arrived cold it was bland and the service was super slow. We had a much better experience in pinhão at Restaurante veladuoro for less than half the cost even with 2 bottles of wine and dessert - much better service and better tasting food which arrived hot. W also had exceptional food in Lisbon, Porto, and Sintra for much less so maybe we were expecting more in pinhão based on the price points

Luxury in the Douro. This hotel/restaurant was the best in Pinhao. The breakfast was top notch. It harkened back to a golden age of travel. The service was exceptional. If you are looking for the best Douro has to offer, Come to the Vintage House.
