On Location: The Epic and Gothic Locations of Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein | Condé Nast Traveler
"I treated Wallace Tower in Ayr as a strong reference for Victor's laboratory; the tower concept informed an imposing exterior that we translated into a nearly 180-foot-high base built at the Markham Agricultural Fairgrounds, while the interiors were realized across eight detailed sets with full blueprints, 3D modeling, technical drawings and an 11-foot miniature replica." - Emily Zemler
This impressive gothic tower dominates Ayr High Street.
It is now the offices of the Thriving Communities department of South Ayrshire Council.
The Wallace Tower was built in 1882 replacing the first Wallace tower (Auld tour) which was owned by the Wallace family of Craigie and is a Neo Gothic monument standing 113 ft in height.
The tower was designed with an empty niche and the people of the town voted for a statue to be placed in the niche which ironically turned out to be William Wallace the Scottish freedom fighter. It is said to stand on the site of a barn where Wallace held 500 captured English soldiers – who had invaded the town – before setting it ablaze. However the name Wallace given to the tower is in connection to the family and not William Wallace.

Free parking and a nice little up hill path to the monument with carved sculptures along the way. Good views of the countryside from the monument and overlooks the battle field of Sterling Bridge

Ayr is a beautiful town and visitors are welcome. Some beautiful architecture visible on the tower. Unfortunately cannot tour the tower due to to it being unsafe above public access point. Love the area.
