The West Field of Giza

The West Field of Giza Pyramids Plateau Located west of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the West Field (also known as the West Cemetery) is one of the most important archaeological zones on the Giza Plateau. It served as the burial site for nobles, priests, and royal family members during Egypt’s Old Kingdom, especially the 4th to 6th Dynasties. The area contains hundreds of beautifully preserved mastabas (ancient tombs) with intricate carvings and hieroglyphs that tell stories of daily life and the afterlife. Excavations by Egyptian and international archaeologists, including the Abu Bakr and Junker missions, have revealed remarkable artifacts and tombs that shed light on ancient Egyptian civilization. The West Field offers visitors a deeper understanding of Giza’s history beyond the pyramids themselves, highlighting the lives of those who served Egypt’s kings thousands of years ago.

Visited 8 October 2022 Once through the entrance at the main gates of the Giza Plateau you come face to face with the Great Pyramid. To the immediate right is the West Field. Instead of joining the throngs of visitors heading toward the pyramid, we turned right and started to explore the lesser known tombs at the site. It was well worth it as we were the only people doing this so had the area to ourselves. We spent a good hour and a half wandering around looking at the forgotten mastabas. Unfortunately not a lot of them are open to visitors with many gated off but there are enough holes to peek through to see the inner beauty of some of these tombs. Make sure you have plenty of water comfortable walking shoes and a hat. A caretaker saw us wandering around and opened one or two of the gates for us ( for a fee of course ) but make sure you do not have any other currency but EGP in sight as they will ask for USD or Euros. Please note that this was the only occasion that we paid a tip to anyone as this was our first day in Egypt and thought it was okay but after that we changed our mind but that's another story...... I would recommend if you are visiting the site independently to come early and take the time to explore the West Field as it definitely worth it.

Giza is so beautiful and majestic, I traveled this summer, this place has many historical sites, the ticket price is 200, you should book online. And to travel by camel, please rent from local people.
