The Westin Melbourne, Victoria, Australia - Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"How did it strike you on arrival? The Westin Melbourne holds its own against the city's big-chain competition, thanks to its central Collins Street location, light-and-airy feel, and impressively maintained guest rooms. It may lack buzz, but sometimes "solid" is better than "showy." Nice. What’s the crowd like? This Westin property is well-known to business travelers who appreciate its seamless operation, and to Starwood devotees, who take advantage of generous pre-booking discounts. It's a largely adult crowd—although there's a Kids Club, families can find the place a bit buttoned up—which keeps noise levels under control in common areas. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The generously proportioned entry-level Westin Room (38 square meters, 409 square feet) is a pared-back study in white-and-cream tones and functional furniture. Solid work desks, enveloping armchairs, and large bathrooms with tubs come as standard. We love the Westin Workout Room, which includes a treadmill or bike, plus free weights; and the enormous Regent Suite, which boasts wraparound windows with downtown views. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Anything of note? Even by hotel standards, the in-room bottled water here is expensive; and the Wi-Fi is only free if you book directly with the hotel, so plan accordingly. Room service and food: Worth it? The excellent restaurant, Allegro, caters to regular visitors by updating its menu seasonally—a welcome change to the play-it-safe ethos at many Australian hotel restaurants. A recent highlight? Blackened duck breast with burnt honey figs, broad bean shiso, and white onion salad. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whatever stuck with you. All of downtown Melbourne is walkable, but The Westin's location is next-level convenient: step out the front doors and turn right for the chic, leafy "Paris End" of Collins Street, or turn left for direct access to bustling Swanston Street and the city focal point of Federation Square. Bottom line: worth it, and why? This unbeatably located and reliably no-fuss luxury property is ideal for visitors who want maximize their productivity while in town." - Dan F. Stapleton

It was a very nice room, great location. However there was no hot water, the shower has a complicated dial for temperate but even the sink was tepid. The shower head was also loose and dropped. A cold droopy shower in winter. Not great. The breakfast was very average, a pretty limited buffet for $50 each. The beds were really nice though. I imagine if we raised the bathroom issue they may have tried to help, but it was late for a one night stay. The staff were mostly very good at their jobs. When we arrived the front desk had a large pile of 6 or so bags from another guest piled in front of it that we had to reach over. I brought them to her attention but she seemed to not care or know what to do with them. When it came to leaving my own bag she told me to add it to them, only when I said I was concerned about how will they know it’s mine did she hand me a tag for me to put on my bag myself (??). When I came back for the key she had me sign something because she ‘forgot’ and I heard her firmly tell a guest to take their bag to the concierge, so maybe she was new. I would have overlooked all of this were it not for the $10 “weekend surcharge” and $12 credit card fee on a $536 room per night.

As a Titanium Elite member, I initially debated staying at The Westin Melbourne due to the lack of an executive lounge, which is one of my favorite benefits—especially during longer stays. I’m so glad I decided to stay anyway, because our experience was nothing short of perfect from the moment we arrived. Check-in was warm and welcoming, with the front desk manager even stepping out to personally greet us. That small gesture really set the tone for the rest of our stay. Our room was comfortable, well-appointed, and offered a great view. Breakfast each morning was excellent—fresh, with plenty of variety. The service throughout the stay was consistently outstanding. Anytime I called for something like ice or glassware, it arrived within five minutes. What really stood out was the attention to detail: during checkout, a staff member actually apologized for not having the correct glassware in the room one day—something I hadn’t even mentioned. That level of proactive care goes above and beyond most Marriott properties I’ve stayed at. The location is another major plus—right in the heart of the city, within walking distance to shopping, restaurants, and many key attractions. Overall, I highly recommend The Westin Melbourne. I look forward to the opportunity to stay here again.

Google
The best location! And amazing service from staff who were so polite and caring. Beds are also super comfortable. And all for a reasonable price and it was theatre night so we only had to walk next door. Superb and I don't give 5 star reviews lightly!

I purchased a $150 voucher for The Westin Melbourne, intended for their High Cheese experience, shortly before the pandemic. Unfortunately, the offering was suspended for a long period, making it impossible to redeem the voucher as intended. By the time High Cheese returned, the voucher had expired, despite the fact that much of its validity period coincided with COVID disruptions. I reached out to ask for a reasonable resolution, and while I appreciate the polite correspondence from the hotel manager, I was ultimately offered only a $50 credit. While I understand policies exist, I expected more flexibility and goodwill from a luxury hotel brand, particularly given the circumstances. This experience has left me disappointed and unlikely to return, and I share this in the hope that others are cautious when purchasing vouchers here.

I had a great stay at The Westin Melbourne. The location is absolutely perfect, just steps away from great restaurants, cafés, and shopping areas, making it ideal for both business and leisure travelers. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, always ready to assist with a smile and genuine care. I also really appreciated the spacious room with plenty of natural light, which made the space feel both relaxing and uplifting. Overall, a very comfortable and convenient stay. I recommended if you’re visiting Melbourne and want to be in the heart of the city!

We were in Melbourne for the second part of our honeymoon and the staff at the Westin were amazing. They welcomed us warmly and acknowledged our special occasion. The hotel is beautiful with a great classy ambiance. The location is very good for exploring Melbourne either by foot or transit. When I make it back to Melbourne, I will definitely stay here again!

We recently enjoyed high tea at the Westin and had a lovely experience. The setting was elegant and relaxing — perfect for an indulgent afternoon. The selection of cakes and sweets was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious, though definitely more on the sweet side overall. If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll be in heaven. A few more savoury options would have balanced things out nicely, but it was still a delightful treat.

Thank you Westin Melbourne for yet again superb service and comprehensive guest facilities. Love, love, love your rooms and location in the heart of the Melbourne experience. Highly recommended. Oh did I say I love the pool…

Yelp
Going to polarize Aussie readers right away: overall I preferred the Sydney location over this one :/ But deeply thankful they gave me an early check-in at no extra charge! Life saving as I literally got off an international flight and needed a shower and be suited for a work meeting @ 9AM. The shower knobs operate differently down under than in 'Murrica. Have you watched the "kids trying to operate a walkman" videos? Yeah like that. I nearly broke down and called the front desk, but my mechanic skills kicked in. The knob was jammed and damaged. I got it unstuck and worked the metal valve enough to get the water flowing. I didn't bother reporting it or requesting another room. Didn't need the hassles. + Melbourne does win for room and bathroom layout! + Large, clean, and modern gym. But very busy early in the morning. + They respond to emails quickly! + Competent and efficient staff at all levels Expect hotel gouging: - $20 Wifi daily fee. Obnoxious for these modern times. It's already $450 daily rate. Yeesh. - $8 credit card fee tacked on. Rly? * $46 suit and a shirt cleaning. * $40 breakfast buffet at the restaurant. ^ AUD$

Yelp
Without question this is one of the top hotels in Melbourne with services and amenities you expect: Great location in CBD Free water and towels when coming in from a morning run Concierge staff that look like royalty and eager to assist Huge rooms some with doors opening to quasi balcony Sauna, steam room, pool and top notch fitness area Chilled towels and green apples for post workout Luxury bathrooms Wonderful and happening lobby bar High end shops next door to cash your paycheque Truly 5 star us property Forget sharing an air bnb with a cat in a tiny bedroom but if you back pack then that's ok but if you travel with Tumi then this is what you will call home during your stay

Yelp
So far I've put in about 8 nights at the Westin Melbourne on my grand business adventure in Australia and while I've liked this hotel from the start, having just returned from The Westin Sydney I have an even greater appreciation for its simplicity and hospitality. The hotel isn't perfect and definitely suffers from dumb western influences such as a card restriction to ride the elevator. You have to use your keycard to access any floor (other than lobby) at any time, and worse your keycard is only valid for the floor your room is on-- which would be really inconvenient at a convention with work colleagues. This hotel is also super busy so checking in early is difficult. I had to wait 2 hours for my room to be ready the first time, but luckily the bar is lively and cocktails are affordable. Requesting a late check-out beyond the 4pm Platinum amenity is a pipe dream. Prepare to pay for a full night if you have a late flight out, or wait in the Qantas lounge for 3 hours eating sandwiches I guess. The room looks like Westin, but I do appreciate the walls between the room and bathroom. That is not a sexy place for a peep-show- I'm looking at you Westin Sydney. And apparently having complementary water is becoming less a thing (again Westin Sydney... I'm watching you), but not a problem at Melbourne. Luckily they haven't heard of the new Green(back) initiative. For some reason there is no bathroom scale in the deluxe rooms here, albeit one will be provided quickly upon request. Yes this is just a pet peeve of mine but some advice to the SPG directors in charge of this sort of thing (because you're reading my little review right??!), business travelers have a tendency to pork up when going to exotic foodie locales, so please just provide a scale. At least after I wipe away my tears of shame I'll be incentivized to use your fitness facilities. Which brings me to the on-site gym. It's small and located in the basement (where lodges my self-esteem after using the scale) and accessing it is decidedly odd. You have to use the back elevators (or forward depending on your room perspective I guess) only and then walk along the 1st floor, not to be confused with the ground floor Americans, until you encounter another elevator to the basement level. There were yoga mats and medicine balls for HIIT plus the standard ellipticals and treadmills. I was delighted to see the refrigerated towels which is the consideration I expect from a Westin but rarely actually experience. Which brings me to consideration and hospitality. This Westin just went above and beyond. For example, upon check-in the second time I was informed that the luggage I had stored at the hotel over the weekend (because I had business in Sydney) was already delivered to my room. The concierge saw me waiting to change my reservation and provided some unsolicited tips to navigate this city which I found very helpful. He also directed me to the concierge to arrange travel while I was visiting Sydney. And this hotel, unlike seemingly every other SPG hotel, has decent hair dryers! They even brought up a better hair dryer when mine exploded through a freak dryer meets floor accident (e.g. Adina P is a klutz-- you have been warned). In any case if I ever find myself back in Melbourne, and I hope I do, I will definitely stay here again. See you on the flip side Australia.

Yelp
As always timeless elegance still offers free wifi for the day, great service, chilled lemon water great selection of papers and great black current tea. Ceaser salad is amazing as is coffee! New decor is edgy and practical and easy on the eye! Love the lobby for business meetings and great clean bathrooms to value add to the experience!

Yelp
Great hotel, in a central location, with tram access to docklands, and a wonderful buffet breakfast. Nice high quality rooms, with friendly and attentive service. A great hotel in downtown Melbourne - right in the posh area with high end retail. Enjoy great dining and shopping options within a 10min walk.

Yelp
The Westin was a great stay both at beginning and end of our trip. Large rooms. Perfect location. We walked everywhere from here. It's next to both high end shopping as well as Chinatown, tons of restaurants and more middle and low end shops. The staff was friendly. The bar was nice. Though the dessert at the chocolate bar was over priced and not great.

Yelp
A grand entrance welcomes you to the the hotel. When a place has an advertisement for Moet across from the door and a Lamborghini, Maserati or Bentley parked in the entrance every day, you know they are trying to give an upscale feel, and the rest of the hotel mostly delivers. The staff is friendly and helpful, the lobby is grand and the views into the square behind the hotel are suitably grand. The indoor pool is perfect for getting a few laps in and the steam room and sauna are nice to help you recover from travel stress. On the downside, this hotel must be coated in uber kryptonite, because it is impossible for ubers to find the place to pick you up - the entrance is on a small street that GPS apparently cannot see. After two attempts, I gave up and took taxis - it felt like I was taking a trip 10 years ago. Speaking of thing s from 10 years ago, the decor of the room could use some updating. I usually don't notice, but compared to similarly priced hotels in the neighborhood like the QT and Sheraton, this felt like a step back. This was even more clear as I hunted for outlets for my three devices - it would have been nice to have at least one near the bed. On a neutral note, the lobby bar is different - it spans the entire length of the lobby, perhaps to take advantage of the view. However, if you have a room in the plaza side, you get a better view from your room, so the bar is probably more inviting for guests. All in all, a pretty good hotel in a great location.

Yelp
Fabulous location in the center of great food, museums, and shopping. Flinders lane is just steps away with tons of delectable spots. The hotel is well maintained and the staff was friendly and accommodating. Breakfast here included a decent selection with made to order eggs or omelets. The chef was very kind and remembered our daily orders which was a nice touch.

Nanzy P.

Yelp
If guests are not permitted to take photographs inside, or record live videos, you should have signs or something to ensure guests have information - not just walk over and rudely tell guests not to take pictures or videos. We are guests here, and to do live videos or take photos of myself, where we can't see other guests in the scene I don't think is a big problem. Really unhappy with the service here. Do not recommend this place at all!

Yelp
On a recent trip to Melbourne, AU I stayed at this hotel for a week. Let me first talk about the location. If you're a shopper, this is were you need to be all of the high end stores are right next door (Gucci, Polo, LV, etc..). It's also close to a ton of restaurants and Chinatown. Upon arrival the staff greeted me with open arms and Thanked me for choosing to stay there. That was a first, I really appreciated the warm welcome. The entire facility was clean along with the rooms. The staff assisted with various tours and directions. Great location with an excellent staff, they had me dying laughing on more than one occasion. They helped make this great trip even better..

Yelp
Nice hotel, the upgraded room I got was quite good. The staff was friendly and the location is excellent. If you are a SPG member I would suggest the Sheraton which is newer and nicer (but smaller).

Bob D.

Yelp
We had a nice time here (7 nights). No executive lounge, but coupons for drinks in the lobby bar. Restaurant was nothing to speak of, breakfast was average to a little above. Rooms were nice and new and quiet. Hotel is right in the center of downtown.

Yelp
One of the nicer Westin hotels, right in the heart of the city, convenient for shopping, night life and Arts/Theater. Love the building, the location, the concierge (so accommodating) and check-in staff. Ask for a room with city views and be sure to make use of the pool. The gym equipment is so-so (for a Westin) but the pool, sauna, are lovely. Valet parking or self park under the hotel for a comparatively reasonable rate. Skip the hotel breakfast until they have sufficient staff - frazzled staff don't make for a pleasant Sunday morning breakfast. However, this remains my hotel of choice in Melbourne.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for the first leg of our honeymoon. To be fair, I can't say much about value because he used his points (even the Internet was included due to a promotion), but the experience was fantastic for mainly 3 reasons: (1) location, (2) casual luxury; and (3) the hotel gym (it was that good). The location was ideal - beautiful and relatively central. I found it easy to get to everything I planned to see on melbourne. The area is metropolitan and busy, which I liked, but if you're looking for something out of the way, this isn't it. The hotel is somewhat luxurious (beautiful view, comfortable bedding, numerous amenities), but relaxed enough to avoid the stuffy, restricted feel that is often associated with hotel luxury. Speaking of hotel amenities, the hotel gym is be best I've ever seen. Short of having a staff and classes, it couldn't be any better. The equipment is relatively new (no dinosaurs here) and everything is kept clean. All the basics are there and more (ellipticals, bikes, treadmills, rowing machine, free weights, machine weights, exercise balls, medicine balls, bosu balls ...). There's also a pool, a steam room and a sauna. Weston takes fitness very seriously. It's also worth noting that the staff (concierge, front desk people, housekeeper) were fantastic and exceptionally friendly.

Yelp
Headline: Great hotel, bad wifi. You should know the drill by now - I visit, I stay, I view from the perspective of a business traveler. Point #1: The room as a whole - large. While it isn't the largest I've been in (Dallas has that honor), it's pretty damn close. It's spacious - luxurious even. Point #2: The bed - beyond comfortable. I got off 20+ hours of flying and fell asleep practically immediately. I didn't want to get up either. Point #3: The bathroom - luxurious. The normal SPG amenities, but the shower is heavenly, consisting of a "rain-head" in the ceiling or a lower normal shower. Separate bath as well. Point #4: The ability to get work done - no point here. The wifi in the room on the fifth floor was non-existant to terrible. It was a good thing I was getting it bundled, because I would not have paid for it. There is free wifi in the lobby, but I shouldn't have to go that far to get online to post a Yelp! review. (This would be a five-star review if I hadn't had the issues with the wifi). Also, the switches on the plugs are in an awkward position - if you have one of those multi-plug adapters for travelling to foreign countries, then beware - mine switched off the plug the first time I used it, resulting in my laptop not charging. I got the hang of it once I woke up, (Note that there is a multi-plug for use in the mini-bar, but be careful - it's very expensive!) Point #5 - general appearance. Forget that the hotel is expensive for food (they always are) - it has good amenities if you are a fitness buff; it's centrally located; it has friendly staff. This is a keeper, in my book. I just wish they had better internet options.

Yelp
I can't comment on the hotel rooms or fine dining as I and two friends met for a chat session in the lobby which was perfect, quiet, great view and a snack menu only. There is also coffee and biscuits, yo yos macarons,Florentines ,almond croissants etc. our Bruschettas took an age to arrive as I suspect food comes from the main kitchen and has to wait its turn. When it did arrive it was fine, good sourdough, balsamic dressing and a generous serve. Coffee and sweet things were delicious! So if you want peace and quiet to chat and a coffee and sweet treat it's a great spot, but dine elsewhere.

Letie W.

Yelp
This hotel is pretty nice. I found the front desk to be accommodating since I arrived 3 hours prior check-in time and my room was not ready. I had a room in 20 minutes. I think it helps if you're a SPG member as well. That said, it's close to Flinders Station and all the food, stores, and free city center tram pick stop there (the backside of the hotel). The hotel is located on Collins which has the high end shopping if you desire. Wifi is not cheap. It's free on lobby and 1st floor. After that it's $5/hr, $60/3 days, $100/7 days. What that means for me is that a lot of time will be spent in their lobby.

Yelp
Definitely going back to Westin Melbourne! A truly 5 stars hotel! Very nice and clean room, and excellent service

Yelp
This is a good function venue. It is very easy to get to - located right at the corner of Collins and Swanston Street, only a few metres from the tram stop and a block from Flinders Street Station. The grand entrance is set back from Collins Street along a driveway. The conference rooms on level 1 are various sizes and are well signed. The room chairs and decor are good, nice temperature and a/c not obtrusive. The catering is very good, with excellent service - I attended a breakfast function and the range of food was good, nice quality too. Coffee and tea are good - Nespresso machine and good quality tea. Overall, it's a good venue. I'd come again.

Yelp
Checked in for a week in Melbourne and after a long flight was greeted with a smiling face who got us into our room early. The room was spacious and exceptionally clean. The rest of our party came in over the next 2 days and had the same awesome experience. The concierge was friendly and informative. Whatever we need it was readily available. The only downside was the onsite restaurant which was a major disappointment. Plenty of other food options near by. When I return to Melbourne I will be staying at the Westin!!

Yelp
I am a Meeting Planner based in the United States and I travel the world hosting meetings and events. In August 2014 I hosted a meeting at the Westin Melbourne. It was a global meeting with people traveling in from all over the world. Every single guest was impressed with this hotel. The Westin Melbourne has an amazing location within the city and has the best staff I have experienced in a long time. The meeting space was beautiful, the banquet food was delicious and the banquet staff was A+. The planning process was painless and once I arrived on-site, it was a breeze . The staff took care of everything and was always available to assist. Should you ever travel to Melbourne for a meeting, I would 100% recommend this hotel. Work with Claire Gustavsson in Sales, Patricia Duffy in Reservations and you for sure want Ruth with you from banquets. This team is unstoppable! :) If you are simply in town looking for a guest room, the hotel is beautiful and again, they have a fabulous location within the city. Well done Westin Melbourne. I hope to see you again soon. *Angie

Yelp
Hard to say too much as only stopped for a coffee but spent most of my time eyeing off the table next door's high tea! Looked amazing!

Yelp
Stayed here for a few days. It's as awesome as westin sydney. Walking distance to all attraction (plus there's a free trolley to get around). Hotel is beautiful. Their staircase is beautiful. Room is standard/average. Some staff seems a little arrogant just because probably majority of their clientele are probably rich ( and I paid my entire stay with spg points). :p overall, I had a wonderful stay.

Clementine B.

Yelp
Earlier this year, I attended a business meeting at the Westin. The hotel is beautiful, and perfectly located in the heart of the city. I arrived and was immediately greeted warmly and made to feel welcome and at ease. I don't normally write reviews, but I've attended two business meetings at this hotel now, and I've consistently been blown away by the staff. Not only is the hotel pristine, but the staff are absolutely outstanding. In particular, Ian, the concierge, is an absolute gem of a man. A real-life Gustave from 'The Grand Budapest Hotel', Ian was charismatic, warm and such a character. I arrived early for my meeting, so I sat in the lobby waiting for a little while, and I observed that Ian had memorized the name of every guest, even the children, and seemed to have developed a rapport with everybody in the building. I had a wonderful conversation with him both before and after my meeting - which he personally escorted me to - and he was a delight. The other concierge was equally fabulous and equally good at his job. I was only in the building for an hour, and already I'm certain that from now on, when I'm in Melbourne, I'll only be staying at this hotel. If the staff are any indication of the guest experience, I'll have an excellent time. Thank you, Ian, for making my meeting so much more bearable, and for calming me down and forcing me to drink some water so I didn't faint. You are a lovely man and an absolute asset to the hotel. -Violet

Yelp
Very disappointing and not up to Westin standards. Housekeeping and Front Desk staff are clueless. Enough said.

Yelp
This is their idea of a $50 valet. They park your car behind the taxi rank and when you give the valet the ticket for the car, he hands you back the key and asks you to hin pick it up. Well done. That $5 dirty Vegas hotel valet has heaps more class than this.
