Not my best stay at a Westin property but also not my worst. There's always room for improvement for lackluster stays.
Booking: I'm always on the lookout for price drops and I was happy to find this property on a busy end of the week through the weekend during which Santa Con coincided.
Location: located at Grand Central, with a short block walk to the nearest metro station and 5 minutes to Grand Central Station. Times Square and 5th Avenue is also within a walkable distance.
Check-In: there was a slight line, with 3 parties, with myself being one of them. It was roughly around 10am that I was (hoping) to check in, but that I already knew the odds were slim. The male agent that assisted me, was somewhat in a hurry, and so neither did I receive a welcome greeting or one involving my Bonvoy status. I had forgotten to present my required document to check in (other Marriott properties - the agents were more than happy to print it out for me directly from their email), instead I was directed to the Concierge desk, with which I had to get out of line. The agent was not one bit pleasant and I said to myself I'll wait for another agent when I returned to check-in. The Concierge Desk was not much better, in which the agent there was on the phone for quite some time before assisting me with little to no conversation whatsoever. When I was finally able to check-in, the agent, this time a female, also lacked a welcoming greeting and status acknowledgment; at this point I didn't care, I simply handed her my document, identification, and a credit card. She proceeded to check me in and informed me that it is too early, but that if I leave my mobile phone number behind, a staff member will contact me when my room is ready. I dropped my bags off and proceeded to begin my day. I received a call around 2pm informing me of my rooms ready-ness.
Return to the Hotel: I spent much of my day exploring New York City and so I was ready for a shower, to lay in bed, and to pack up to leave the next day. But, before doing so, I needed to get to my room. A bit of fair warning, the mobile keep in the Bonvoy app will not work with the elevators at this Westin property (I'm not sure if it should or would in the future at other Westin properties), and therefore you would still need a physical room key. When I visited the front desk for assistance, again, the agent, this time female; no greeting, and not friendly at all. I showed her my Bonvoy app, and I proceeded to present my identification card to her, to which she did not ask for and informed me that the elevators require a physical room key for access and handed me a pair of freshly programmed keys. On a security point of view; it's not my first encounter where I was not asked to present for my identification, but that at the very least I am the person listed on the reservation.
The Room: while my Bonvoy status was not acknowledged, I did seemingly received an upgraded room. Or so I thought.... The room in question is a deluxe 2 bedded room, which looks more or less the same in picture as to the traditional rooms offered at this Westin property. The hotel itself is undergoing a renovation, but I feel that perhaps it is somewhat rushed? The lobby and everything encompassing the ground level is definitely refreshed with a clean and modern look. The room I was given however, isn't exactly refreshed. The furniture are actually in good condition, but the mattresses could and should be replaced. The pillows were a mosh-posh of textures and firmness. The nightstand featured flimsy USB ports that required a lot of force to plug in. There was a very outdated digital clock with FM/AM radio on the nightstand as well (where's the qi-wireless charging and Bluetooth capable iHome?). The Samsung television set, although 4D capable, it lacks in room streaming capability, with the only option via Bluetooth. Slippers are not available and so I used a pair that I saved from another hotel.
The Bathroom: yes, I think of the bathroom as another category in a hotel because you do spend some time there. In the description, a deluxe room has a separate shower and tub. The bathroom in this room has a shower and tub combination, single vanity, and toilet all in the same area. The bathe amenities were a bit confusing with regards to having more than 1 brand present. Westin's signature white tea scent was present throughout the lobby but that the only thing white tea related in the room's bathroom was bottles of body lotion. There was also a separate branded shampoo and body wash sitting in the metal caddy inside the shower (perhaps the previous guest left that behind?) I was however pleasantly surprised by The Beekman Brother's goat milk soap bars, but that I'm not entirely sure if this will become the latter. Old and multiple branded towels were also prevalent in the bathroom, which was definitely inconsistent.
Decent hotel but in general needs improvement.
