The Best Family Hotels in Greece

"Vassilis Constantakopoulos, aka The Captain, was a man with a vision. Having made his billions in shipping, he dedicated his life to regenerating Messinia, the Peloponnese peninsula where he grew up, and the result was this estate of hotels and villas, golf courses, and restaurants, all with a committed eco punch. It sounds vast and unwieldy, but the design is clever, the landscape swallows up the buildings, the stone echoes the surrounding villages, and the dunes still have a feeling of wildness. Environmental awareness and conservation are all encompassing—rainwater reservoirs keep the rolling fourways a vibrant green, waste water irrigates plants, and the beaches are protected because of the sea turtles who lay their eggs there (the Barbouni beach club even closes at 5 p.m. so as not to disturb them). Pick between the Romanos and Westin hotels. The former is more reserved, the latter more obviously family friendly, though they share everything—the restaurants, lounge chairs on the beaches, swimming pools, and spas. Two kids clubs come with an army of dedicated local teachers to entertain their charges, and a long-as-your-arm menu of activities including Young Gardeners, which takes them out to the hotels’ vegetable patch to sow and harvest. After a busy morning of gardening, children squeeze onto benches under an ancient olive tree to tuck into Greek salad drizzled with local olive oil. Older children can launch themselves at the climbing wall, bowling alley, tennis courts, water slides, or movie theater, or sign up for football coaching, while parents munch on Kalamata olives and taste wine from the hotel vineyards. For more adventurous guests, or those revising for an Ancient History GCSE, there are 10 major sites on the doorstep, including the Palace of Nestor, which was, fittingly, renowned for its hospitality. Book one of the sailing boats for a voyage to Proti Island, which lurks crocodile-like in the Ionian. Sail into the natural harbor and see the messages scratched into the walls by sailors to warn others of the local pirates."

W Costa Navarino

"Why book? To discover the sweeping Ionian coast without the shrills of young children—this is the first adults-only offering (they do allow children over 12) from family-friendly resort Costa Navarino and the first W hotel in Greece. It manages to fuse fun (a poolside DJ) with wellness (a roster of fitness classes and an impressive spa) alongside eco-conscious design accompanied by a gallery-like collection of work from upcoming Greek artists gracing the natural stone walls. History buffs can seek out Messinian ruins and hikers will be drawn to the perfumed hill trails. Inclusivity is at the forefront of its core values, from hair and skin products for all ethnicities to gender-neutral loos and an LGBTQ+ ambassador. Set the scene A chug through Messinia’s olive-dotted countryside, past bare-chested octogenarians driving ancient tractors, brings you to the 13-hectare waterfront site, designed in the form of a Greek coastal village. It is located a 10-minute drive from the main Costa Navarino resort, next to the forthcoming Mandarin Oriental (opening this summer), with a shop, cinema, and restaurant-filled “agora” connecting the two. Replete with local materials, such as stone repurposed from the land where Costa Navarino’s golf courses were created, the muted palette cast by Greek architects Tombazis and Associates in wood, rock, and reed blends softly into the lavender-, jasmine-, and oleander-packed landscaped gardens. The soaring atrium is filled with specially commissioned art, overseen by visual curator Poka-Yio and founder of the Athens Biennale, who commissioned students of the Athens School of Fine Arts. One piece is constructed of clay Linear B tablets recast as mobile phone chat bubbles, a meditation on the changing face of language and communication. The store, next to the reception, plots Greek contemporary art books alongside bespoke lilium and sea salt candles and jaunty fruit-strewn sandals by Sibylla Delphica. While the destination’s other hotels have been more about golf and family, this is seeking out a different, cooler audience to the region from its electro house tunes at sunset spun by Ukrainian DJ Rie Kiriiaka to its new vegetarian beachside restaurant, Green Pepper, and loom-woven dresses with patterns inspired by 70s art from its Ergon Amphora store, a Mykonos import focused on sustainable fashion. The backstory Costa Navarino’s owner Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos had one mission: to put his beautiful Messinia on the map. Until he built the first hotel (the development will ultimately comprise five resorts) in 2010 under the banner of his company, Temes, the area was relatively unknown. Using his funds from a successful shipping career, the first area to open, Navarino Dunes, comprises the family-focused Romanos and Westin resorts, an Anazoe spa and residences alongside an 18-hole golf course. The Navarino Waterfront is made up of W; while at nearby Navarino Bay, there is an 18-hole golf course and the Mandarin Oriental (opening later this summer). A further area, Navarino Hills opened last year with two more golf courses. A tour around the development reveals snazzy private residences (these have access to the resorts’ facilities). Located 45 minutes from Kalamata, it is also within easy reach of Athens—a 2.5-hour drive. Rooms In line with the rather chummy W vernacular (staff quarters are labeled “Talent”), there are 246 Fabulous, Spectacular, and Wow! rooms, suites, and villas spread throughout the property. We loved the infinity swim-up room, with access to a shared ground-level 90-meter pool—ideal for an early morning dip. They are all decked out in similar aesthetics by London-based MKV Design, with a focus on calm neutrals and bespoke furniture, such as the chequered headboard, shaped from bamboo. A mid-century chair (which is a nod to Messinian saddlery artisanship), taupe drapes, and geometric cushions give it a modernist vibe. Commissions include jugs in the form of ancient amphora and rattan lights paying homage to the region’s culture of basket weaving. Bathrooms are spacious, with textured walls. Suites come with private pools and artworks such as Nafsika Keke’s photographs depicting a surrealist waterworld and Dania Kotsaki’s bespoke bamboo wall hangings. Food and drink The dining areas are located around the hotel’s infinity pool, forming the focal point of the resort. The Platía is a spin on the traditional Greek food market with four different rooms connected by a jasmine-covered pergola. The breakfast is a joyful exploration of the healthy—salad bowls piled high with glistening oil-slicked tomatoes, local Kalamata olives, and mounds of jewel-like pomegranate - and the bikini-busting. The bakery is a test of willpower, the day beginning with a  wedge of cheese and filo pie and a slice of their delicious honey cake. Lunchtimes are more abstemious with avocado and tuna packed poke bowls and watermelon salad at the W lounge. Head to the vibey beachside Parelía for riffs on Greek classics. The café features a centerpiece display of slow drip coffee machines worthy of any Dalston roastery. There are five different alternative milks (including pea) and gluten-free breakfast goods from Gea bakery, a Greek brand. The spa The Away Spa is light and airy, with another thought-provoking artwork—a sculpture made from towels to mimic ancient relief. The detox massage worked deep into the hiking aches. Ready for an Instagram-ready crowd (their spa guide urges you to “get camera ready”), there are shellac manis and pedis on offer, plus make-up and blow dries alongside some more tailor-made treatments such as golf massages, a scrub with local honey, and aloe facials. Fitness is forefront here, from the complimentary core classes to the slick new Technogym equipment. This draws a fitness and wellness-centric crowd—the well-populated outdoor gym was an inspiration to us sun worshippers. There is also a 25-meter lap pool (the beautiful infinity pool is more for posing here) and four tennis courts. Although not open during my stay, a new watersports hub will open offering windsurfing, water-skiing, and kayaking. The neighborhood Its beauty drew Patrick Leigh Fermor, who lived in the pretty castellated village of Kardamyli, and Bruce Chatwin, who asked for his ashes to be scattered here. Seeped in history, Messinia is rich with classical temples, Byzantine churches, and craggy medieval castles (a stomp up to the ruins at Pylos is a must, for the breathtaking 360-degree views). With Olympia, Mystras, and the Palace of Nestor in easy reach, you can pepper your tan and flop days with pedagogic jaunts seeking out the region’s history. For those going in shoulder seasons, when the weather is cooler, try out the hikes such as to the Kalamaris waterfall—listen out for chirruping frogs—and coastal bike rides with a dip in the famous horseshoe beach at Voidokilia. The service Like clockwork, from the super slick housekeeping who came after breakfast every day to the charming and chatty serving staff. Like the other hotels in the collection, there is a true sense of warmth at the heart of the hotel from the 350 staff—even though it is a big brand hotel, ultimately this is a family-run business, and that hospitable embrace is felt throughout. Who comes here? Hip holidaying friends, those who don’t want to share their trip with babies’ howls, and golfers looking for an element of cool (guests have access to all the facilities at the other Costa Navarino hotels such as golf courses and the Mouratoglou tennis academy). For families Only children 12 years and over are permitted. The new water sports center will be a hit with the teen contingent, but there isn’t much in the way of local nightlife for those seeking a party scene. Eco effort Good. No single-use plastic, and planted roofs with local herbs for minimum watering provide natural insulation from the heat. It is home to the biggest olive tree transplanting program in Europe and is focused on protecting fauna, too—they are partnering with NGOs to protect the only species of African Chameleon found in Europe at its Giolava Lagoon—as well as sheltering 271 of the 441 recorded bird species in Greece. There is a pledge to be carbon neutral by 2030. Accessibility for those with mobility impairments Excellent. There are five wheelchair-accessible rooms, ramps, and a concierge desk 36 inches high so it is accessible to those in wheelchairs. There are also rooms with Braille numbering and lettering, as well as alt text used in social media so that the visually impaired can read it. For Deaf guests, there are strobe fire alarms; and for autism spectrum guests, weighted blankets and non-fluoro lighting. Is it worth it? Yes, you can extract from it what you will—wellness, a bit of a party vibe, art, culture, golf (if you like), and heritage—and unlike a lot of Greek island resorts, it is very easy to get to via Athens (and cheaper too, because of the plentiful flights there)." - Jemima Sissons

The Westin Resort, Costa Navarino

"Messinia is a ravishingly remote corner of the southwest Peloponnese that’s a four-hour drive from Athens (or one hour from tiny Kalamata airport). It was well under the radar until the advent of Navarino Dunes, a 320-acre Mediterranean-hugging resort that’s part of the ambitious Costa Navarino development—a modern take on a classic agora of shops, restaurants, cafés, and a cavernous spa flanked by two hotels. The family-friendly Westin Resort is livelier and more laid-back, its 445 rooms done in pale wood and exposed stone, with blissful tubs positioned to make the most of pool, golf, or sea views. Frazzled parents unwind at the swim-up bar, while the little ones run amok in the spiffy waterpark, bowling alley, and giant sand castle equipped for sleep-overs. The range of activities at both properties is exhaustive, but the main attractions are the half-mile sandy beach and 18-hole golf course. Food at the various multi-ethnic restaurants (which include Greek, Italian, and even American diner fare) is fine, but breakfasts make a bigger impression—a smorgasbord of local produce, perfect cappuccinos, and eggs any way you’d like. Though occasionally out of their depth, staff are always enthusiastic."

This is our third time at Costa Navarino but our first as a family. The resort has a huge amount to offer especially for those traveling with families. I think feedback is critical to helping resorts improve and there’s a few aspects I think need improving at this hotel:||Kids menu- this is extremely limited and the same in most restaurants. I found out on our last day that the hotel has fish fingers but you have to specifically ask for them as they aren’t on the menu. Take tips from Sani where their kids offerings are exceptional.|| The area around the Westin main pool is filthy: the stones may look pretty but not when covered in used tissues, food wrappers etc.||Kids cant jump in the pool: i get lifeguards are there to do a job but they are sapping every bit of fun out of a kids holiday. This is a family friendly resort.||Wine: the menus are exhaustive yet extortionate. I also understand there is a premium on the wine selection but again vs Sani the prices are just SO elevated and different in each restaurant.||They used to have a belly dancer in the Lebanese restaurant which now doesn’t seem to be the case which means this restaurant which used to be packed is now largely empty and sees it go from a 8/10 to 6/10- shame.||Room upgrades are great and the layout for families. Golf amazing. Waterpark good although a little tired in places. Beach good. Service mostly good. Food hit and miss, some great, some very average.

What a wonderful stay! I recently visited this amazing resort and had a fantastic time. The place is absolutely gorgeous, and I was impressed by the variety of rooms, some even coming with their own private pools. The breakfast was a major highlight. There was a huge variety of delicious food and desserts, ensuring there was something for everyone. The resort has plenty of fun activities to offer. The water slides were a blast, and the kids' pools were perfect for the little ones. I also enjoyed relaxing at the spa and getting a workout in at the gym. There were so many swimming pools to choose from, each with plenty of seating and towels readily available. The beach was truly incredible—clean, peaceful, and stunning. They also had towels, a kiosk, and a friendly staff there to help. Even though the resort is huge, getting around was super easy thanks to the convenient shuttles. The entire staff was incredibly kind and helpful throughout my stay. My only minor complaint is the lack of drinking water, Overall, I highly recommend this resort. It's a truly wonderful place for a relaxing and fun vacation.

We were really looking forward to a relaxing 7-day couples’ holiday at Costa Navarino, but sadly we cut it short after just 3 nights. For us, the resort now feels firmly geared towards golfers — there are four courses — but that seems to come at the expense of guests who don’t play.||It’s a large, sprawling (and at times confusing) property with around five main restaurants, including a buffet. However, despite downloading the app as instructed on arrival, every restaurant was fully booked for the first six days of our stay. That was incredibly disappointing. In the end, we had to stand at the door at opening time and hope for cancellations — not what you expect at a five-star resort.||Our first meal, at the Italian, was so poor that the cost was fully refunded. Thankfully, the food and service at Nargile on days two and three were excellent, but it was frustrating to have no choice but to dine in the same place twice simply because everywhere else was full.||Breakfast was also chaotic — no organisation, no staff managing tables, and guests grabbing seats wherever they could. It felt like a free-for-all as golfers loaded up before their tee times. Once seated, the food itself was good and plentiful, but the experience was anything but relaxing.||By mid-morning, the resort becomes eerily quiet. With almost everyone out golfing, the pools, beach, and public areas are deserted. Ice cream kiosks and some shops close during the day, leaving little atmosphere. Aside from the pools, gym, and a few classes (Iona in Pilates and yoga was outstanding), there’s very little to do unless you pay extra. Activities such as padel (€50/hour), tennis (€50/hour, with tired equipment), or bike hire (€70/day) are priced well above what we’ve experienced elsewhere. Cycling outside the resort isn’t practical either — it’s all construction roads and heavy trucks.||Golfers we spoke to said they enjoyed the courses but rounds took over five hours and shuttle logistics were tricky, especially as three of the courses are a 30-minute ride away. Miss your pre-booked return shuttle and you could be waiting a long time.||We also visited the “marina” area (Agora), a 15-minute shuttle ride away, but found it half-empty — only about 16 shops, many closed, and barely any visitors. Not exactly the lively promenade we’d hoped for.||In summary, if you’re a keen golfer with restaurant reservations made weeks in advance, you might enjoy this resort — though even then there are arguably better options, such as Belek. But if golf isn’t your thing, you’ll likely find yourself in a beautiful yet soulless five-star resort with little atmosphere and constant frustration over dining and organisation.||There were a few highlights — Nargile’s lovely staff and food, Iona’s Pilates classes, and the friendly beach bar team — but overall, our experience was disappointing and we wouldn’t recommend Costa Navarino for non-golfing couples seeking a relaxing holiday.

We had an amazing stay at the Westin Resort Costa Navarino. It truly checks every box:| • Luxury and comfort throughout| • Beautiful pools for kids and toddlers| • A stunning beach| • A well-equipped gym with excellent trainers| • Delicious food every day||The real highlight, though, was the basketball camp for kids. It was fun, professional, and educational. In just six days of morning and evening sessions, our son became a completely different player.||We had the privilege of meeting Aliki Evangelinou, Ioannis Kotsis, and especially Anastasia Kostaki, the first Greek woman in history to play in the WNBA. Our kids had the rare chance to learn from top coaches.||We also met Michael Bradley on our last day, which was such a thrill. Unfortunately, our son didn’t get to play with him, although he does teach we missed him by 1 day, but just meeting him was special.||What makes this camp exceptional is not just the coaches’ careers and records, but their rare ability to actually teach children. That is the hardest part—and they did it perfectly. They gave the kids skills, confidence, and motivation that will last far beyond the camp.||We are definitely coming back. In fact, we are already planning to book for next year. The team could not have made this experience any better for the children. It was truly unforgettable.

I truly believe this is the best resort in Greece. Everything is top-notch, from the rooms to the service. I especially enjoyed the breakfast—it was delicious, with a huge selection at the buffet. Thank you so much for the upgrade; it made my stay even more special. I’m already looking forward to visiting again next year!

Google
Exhorbitant prices while getting a service that you can easily find it for at least 60% less in other more beautiful parts of Greece (especially quality of food, spa services). I found it a disgrace from this perspective. They even asked for 8000 euros pre authorisation for 4 nights stay. I thought I would be walking in a paradise on earth: far from it. Coming from Kinsterna boutique luxury hotel, our rooms and experience was a bit of a let down. Most of activities you need to pay for. When the basic bill is quite steep, this seems a bit excessive. Also I might add it s the first time I have had to pay for the entire stay upon check-in. And if I may they have been a bit pushy and seemed a bit worried we were trespassing. After 2 days stay they seemed more relaxed as they saw we have been spending in the hotel and let us charge the room etc. This has never happened to me before. The area is nice if you visit from abroad and haven't been much around in Greece. For people that know, the entire area is just "bof" (="meh"). Beach not exactly a highlight. In Peloponesse, there are nicer beaches and places to stay in the south of the region (e.g. around Monemvasia, Mani etc). And many other wonderful regions to visit in Greece much better than Costa Navarino.

We stay at many hotels around the world and truly one of the best family friendly resorts. Versa, Francesca, Mariana, and Maria from the cocoon kids club were simply incredible the whole time. The breakfast buffet is the best we have ever had. The aqua park is incredible for smaller kids and the pools and big slides is great for older children. A huge splurge but if you can afford, it’s amazing. The front desk staff isn’t informed on what is happening on the grounds which makes a less than perfect beginning experience but with some help the whole experience can be 10/10.

Simply the very very BEST !In every and each way this place is so perfect! We were a famiy of six adults and a toddler. The fscilities wrte exquisite but the staff are absolutely the best I have come across in 40 years of travelling - especially pool staff and staff serving breakfast - but everyone is superb !Bravo !👏|The breakfast is a veritable feast - just superb ! Vast choice meeting all dietary needs a person could have.|The beds are heavenly - particularly loved the pillows. |Choose rooms in D complex without own pool..You will not forget the view and being covered in moonlight as you sleep near the open windows or on the veranda couch, surrounded by the calming sounds of nocturnal nature and of sea waves gently crushing on the beach below as the full moon lights up the sea below|Do NOT miss swimming in the sea ! It is rough and deep and you MUST be a strong swimmer but it is just fantastic !
