"Vassilis Constantakopoulos, aka The Captain, was a man with a vision. Having made his billions in shipping, he dedicated his life to regenerating Messinia, the Peloponnese peninsula where he grew up, and the result was this estate of hotels and villas, golf courses, and restaurants, all with a committed eco punch. It sounds vast and unwieldy, but the design is clever, the landscape swallows up the buildings, the stone echoes the surrounding villages, and the dunes still have a feeling of wildness. Environmental awareness and conservation are all encompassing—rainwater reservoirs keep the rolling fourways a vibrant green, waste water irrigates plants, and the beaches are protected because of the sea turtles who lay their eggs there (the Barbouni beach club even closes at 5 p.m. so as not to disturb them). Pick between the Romanos and Westin hotels. The former is more reserved, the latter more obviously family friendly, though they share everything—the restaurants, lounge chairs on the beaches, swimming pools, and spas. Two kids clubs come with an army of dedicated local teachers to entertain their charges, and a long-as-your-arm menu of activities including Young Gardeners, which takes them out to the hotels’ vegetable patch to sow and harvest. After a busy morning of gardening, children squeeze onto benches under an ancient olive tree to tuck into Greek salad drizzled with local olive oil. Older children can launch themselves at the climbing wall, bowling alley, tennis courts, water slides, or movie theater, or sign up for football coaching, while parents munch on Kalamata olives and taste wine from the hotel vineyards. For more adventurous guests, or those revising for an Ancient History GCSE, there are 10 major sites on the doorstep, including the Palace of Nestor, which was, fittingly, renowned for its hospitality. Book one of the sailing boats for a voyage to Proti Island, which lurks crocodile-like in the Ionian. Sail into the natural harbor and see the messages scratched into the walls by sailors to warn others of the local pirates."

"Why book? To discover the sweeping Ionian coast without the shrills of young children—this is the first adults-only offering (they do allow children over 12) from family-friendly resort Costa Navarino and the first W hotel in Greece. It manages to fuse fun (a poolside DJ) with wellness (a roster of fitness classes and an impressive spa) alongside eco-conscious design accompanied by a gallery-like collection of work from upcoming Greek artists gracing the natural stone walls. History buffs can seek out Messinian ruins and hikers will be drawn to the perfumed hill trails. Inclusivity is at the forefront of its core values, from hair and skin products for all ethnicities to gender-neutral loos and an LGBTQ+ ambassador. Set the scene A chug through Messinia’s olive-dotted countryside, past bare-chested octogenarians driving ancient tractors, brings you to the 13-hectare waterfront site, designed in the form of a Greek coastal village. It is located a 10-minute drive from the main Costa Navarino resort, next to the forthcoming Mandarin Oriental (opening this summer), with a shop, cinema, and restaurant-filled “agora” connecting the two. Replete with local materials, such as stone repurposed from the land where Costa Navarino’s golf courses were created, the muted palette cast by Greek architects Tombazis and Associates in wood, rock, and reed blends softly into the lavender-, jasmine-, and oleander-packed landscaped gardens. The soaring atrium is filled with specially commissioned art, overseen by visual curator Poka-Yio and founder of the Athens Biennale, who commissioned students of the Athens School of Fine Arts. One piece is constructed of clay Linear B tablets recast as mobile phone chat bubbles, a meditation on the changing face of language and communication. The store, next to the reception, plots Greek contemporary art books alongside bespoke lilium and sea salt candles and jaunty fruit-strewn sandals by Sibylla Delphica. While the destination’s other hotels have been more about golf and family, this is seeking out a different, cooler audience to the region from its electro house tunes at sunset spun by Ukrainian DJ Rie Kiriiaka to its new vegetarian beachside restaurant, Green Pepper, and loom-woven dresses with patterns inspired by 70s art from its Ergon Amphora store, a Mykonos import focused on sustainable fashion. The backstory Costa Navarino’s owner Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos had one mission: to put his beautiful Messinia on the map. Until he built the first hotel (the development will ultimately comprise five resorts) in 2010 under the banner of his company, Temes, the area was relatively unknown. Using his funds from a successful shipping career, the first area to open, Navarino Dunes, comprises the family-focused Romanos and Westin resorts, an Anazoe spa and residences alongside an 18-hole golf course. The Navarino Waterfront is made up of W; while at nearby Navarino Bay, there is an 18-hole golf course and the Mandarin Oriental (opening later this summer). A further area, Navarino Hills opened last year with two more golf courses. A tour around the development reveals snazzy private residences (these have access to the resorts’ facilities). Located 45 minutes from Kalamata, it is also within easy reach of Athens—a 2.5-hour drive. Rooms In line with the rather chummy W vernacular (staff quarters are labeled “Talent”), there are 246 Fabulous, Spectacular, and Wow! rooms, suites, and villas spread throughout the property. We loved the infinity swim-up room, with access to a shared ground-level 90-meter pool—ideal for an early morning dip. They are all decked out in similar aesthetics by London-based MKV Design, with a focus on calm neutrals and bespoke furniture, such as the chequered headboard, shaped from bamboo. A mid-century chair (which is a nod to Messinian saddlery artisanship), taupe drapes, and geometric cushions give it a modernist vibe. Commissions include jugs in the form of ancient amphora and rattan lights paying homage to the region’s culture of basket weaving. Bathrooms are spacious, with textured walls. Suites come with private pools and artworks such as Nafsika Keke’s photographs depicting a surrealist waterworld and Dania Kotsaki’s bespoke bamboo wall hangings. Food and drink The dining areas are located around the hotel’s infinity pool, forming the focal point of the resort. The Platía is a spin on the traditional Greek food market with four different rooms connected by a jasmine-covered pergola. The breakfast is a joyful exploration of the healthy—salad bowls piled high with glistening oil-slicked tomatoes, local Kalamata olives, and mounds of jewel-like pomegranate - and the bikini-busting. The bakery is a test of willpower, the day beginning with a  wedge of cheese and filo pie and a slice of their delicious honey cake. Lunchtimes are more abstemious with avocado and tuna packed poke bowls and watermelon salad at the W lounge. Head to the vibey beachside Parelía for riffs on Greek classics. The café features a centerpiece display of slow drip coffee machines worthy of any Dalston roastery. There are five different alternative milks (including pea) and gluten-free breakfast goods from Gea bakery, a Greek brand. The spa The Away Spa is light and airy, with another thought-provoking artwork—a sculpture made from towels to mimic ancient relief. The detox massage worked deep into the hiking aches. Ready for an Instagram-ready crowd (their spa guide urges you to “get camera ready”), there are shellac manis and pedis on offer, plus make-up and blow dries alongside some more tailor-made treatments such as golf massages, a scrub with local honey, and aloe facials. Fitness is forefront here, from the complimentary core classes to the slick new Technogym equipment. This draws a fitness and wellness-centric crowd—the well-populated outdoor gym was an inspiration to us sun worshippers. There is also a 25-meter lap pool (the beautiful infinity pool is more for posing here) and four tennis courts. Although not open during my stay, a new watersports hub will open offering windsurfing, water-skiing, and kayaking. The neighborhood Its beauty drew Patrick Leigh Fermor, who lived in the pretty castellated village of Kardamyli, and Bruce Chatwin, who asked for his ashes to be scattered here. Seeped in history, Messinia is rich with classical temples, Byzantine churches, and craggy medieval castles (a stomp up to the ruins at Pylos is a must, for the breathtaking 360-degree views). With Olympia, Mystras, and the Palace of Nestor in easy reach, you can pepper your tan and flop days with pedagogic jaunts seeking out the region’s history. For those going in shoulder seasons, when the weather is cooler, try out the hikes such as to the Kalamaris waterfall—listen out for chirruping frogs—and coastal bike rides with a dip in the famous horseshoe beach at Voidokilia. The service Like clockwork, from the super slick housekeeping who came after breakfast every day to the charming and chatty serving staff. Like the other hotels in the collection, there is a true sense of warmth at the heart of the hotel from the 350 staff—even though it is a big brand hotel, ultimately this is a family-run business, and that hospitable embrace is felt throughout. Who comes here? Hip holidaying friends, those who don’t want to share their trip with babies’ howls, and golfers looking for an element of cool (guests have access to all the facilities at the other Costa Navarino hotels such as golf courses and the Mouratoglou tennis academy). For families Only children 12 years and over are permitted. The new water sports center will be a hit with the teen contingent, but there isn’t much in the way of local nightlife for those seeking a party scene. Eco effort Good. No single-use plastic, and planted roofs with local herbs for minimum watering provide natural insulation from the heat. It is home to the biggest olive tree transplanting program in Europe and is focused on protecting fauna, too—they are partnering with NGOs to protect the only species of African Chameleon found in Europe at its Giolava Lagoon—as well as sheltering 271 of the 441 recorded bird species in Greece. There is a pledge to be carbon neutral by 2030. Accessibility for those with mobility impairments Excellent. There are five wheelchair-accessible rooms, ramps, and a concierge desk 36 inches high so it is accessible to those in wheelchairs. There are also rooms with Braille numbering and lettering, as well as alt text used in social media so that the visually impaired can read it. For Deaf guests, there are strobe fire alarms; and for autism spectrum guests, weighted blankets and non-fluoro lighting. Is it worth it? Yes, you can extract from it what you will—wellness, a bit of a party vibe, art, culture, golf (if you like), and heritage—and unlike a lot of Greek island resorts, it is very easy to get to via Athens (and cheaper too, because of the plentiful flights there)." - Jemima Sissons

"Messinia is a ravishingly remote corner of the southwest Peloponnese that’s a four-hour drive from Athens (or one hour from tiny Kalamata airport). It was well under the radar until the advent of Navarino Dunes, a 320-acre Mediterranean-hugging resort that’s part of the ambitious Costa Navarino development—a modern take on a classic agora of shops, restaurants, cafés, and a cavernous spa flanked by two hotels. The family-friendly Westin Resort is livelier and more laid-back, its 445 rooms done in pale wood and exposed stone, with blissful tubs positioned to make the most of pool, golf, or sea views. Frazzled parents unwind at the swim-up bar, while the little ones run amok in the spiffy waterpark, bowling alley, and giant sand castle equipped for sleep-overs. The range of activities at both properties is exhaustive, but the main attractions are the half-mile sandy beach and 18-hole golf course. Food at the various multi-ethnic restaurants (which include Greek, Italian, and even American diner fare) is fine, but breakfasts make a bigger impression—a smorgasbord of local produce, perfect cappuccinos, and eggs any way you’d like. Though occasionally out of their depth, staff are always enthusiastic."

The resort offers a lot, a beautiful beach, lovely pools, both with plentiful towels, an excellent gym, nice rooms and common areas and a really good breakfast buffet. The food offering across the resort is good at lunch and dinner. There’s tennis nearby at an extra cost (almost everything at the resort carries an extra cost), a good golf course on site and others nearby. The surrounding countryside is beautiful, omega beach worth a visit, Gialova offers a strip of restaurants and a few shops on the bay and Pylos is a nice local town in a beautiful setting. All accessible through the bike rental on site where the staff are exceptional, although be prepared for the climb to Pylos. The Greek people were lovely everywhere we visited on this trip and no different at the hotel. With such fantastic facilities in such a setting I think the offering could be better with improved organisation. Adults and young children are well catered for but a teenager programme was lacking. The gym staff were so good, knowledgeable and helpful that a teenager fitness/sports programme for example could be considered. Overall, I’d recommend the resort. It’s a corner of the world worth seeing and the westin is a nice place to stay.

We recently stayed at this beautiful resort and were truly impressed by how lovely and well maintained everything was. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere felt peaceful, relaxing, and safe exactly what you'd hope for when looking to unplug and recharge. One of the best parts about this resort is the convenience. Everything is within walking or buggy distance whether it's the beach, pools, restaurants, or activities. It makes exploring the property easy and enjoyable without ever feeling like you're rushing from place to place. There are multiple dining options and plenty of activities to choose from, whether you're looking to stay active or just unwind. From lounging in the sun to enjoying fun excursions, there's something for everyone. The staff has been nothing but warm, helpful, and accommodating throughout our stay. Their hospitality truly added to the experience. While there were a couple of small hiccups mostly around needing reservations for certain experiences those could’ve been easily avoided had we known in advance. Still, they didn’t take away from the overall experience. We highly recommend this resort to couples, families with kids, or anyone just looking to get away for a bit. It’s the kind of place where you can truly unplug and enjoy everything around you. We’ll definitely be back!

Fantastic resort and hotel. Nice lay-out and set up. Because of the smaller buildings with hotelrooms it feels quite cosy. Plenty of choice for pools, restaurants etc.|Breakfast sometimes very busy and noisy with families with kids. Arranging an ‘adults only’ area would be an idea. The assortment for breakfast is huge: buffet, lie cooking and a la carte. So much choice and of very good quality.||My husband and I celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary at the resort. The guest experience team have made a huge effort to assist in any way they could to make this a special event. They certainly ticked the boxes exceed expectations by taking an extra step. The private dinner I arranged with them at the Dunes Golfclub members lounge was absolutely fantastic fine dining.|We highly recommend this hotel, location, staff, friendliness, cleanliness, all is very well looked after.

Just came back from an incredible stay and honestly… I’m still daydreaming about it. Everything — from the views to the food to the smallest details — was exceptional. The staff truly went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and cared for. You can tell there’s a real team effort behind the scenes, and it shows in every part of the experience. A huge thank you to everyone at Costa Navarino. You made our stay unforgettable. We genuinely couldn’t have asked for more — can’t wait to come back! 🙏✨

Stayed in 2607, the room is ok but has no privacy. I called the reception just after check-in, around 15:30 to change for one with more privacy as anyone can look at you inside but I only got a call back the next day around 13:30. Not sure what takes 20hours to get a response.|After entering the room and being told that the room was ready, we found a hair in the bath tub and on the bed. The housekeeper came and saw this and apologized, mentioned that she would tell her supervisor as no one checked the room beforehand.|Also,The room allocated had no baby bed which came 45min later, it is the oldest bed I have seen in my life it must be 20y old, It might have been there when the hotel was build and on top of that it’s unsafe as you can’t block the wheels which the housekeeping manager saw next day when I mentioned it and exchanged it for a parko bed.|I am not surprised after the poor check-in we got from Anastasia, while she was kind and smiling she seemed lost and tired. She noticed that we were french and spoke to us in French.|She asked if we had just arrived to which we replied that we live in Athens. A minute kater she asks us if we came with Transavia, to which I replied that we drove from Athens since we live them and a minute later she asked us where about we are in Paris.. third time we mentioned Athens she understood her mistake and apologized.|I asked her for any recommendations for my son’s first birthday this wednesday to which she replied to check with the mandarin oriental|We go lt no information about the hotel from her whatsoever except the breakfast.|The motto seems just call 0 if you need anything.|The call 0 is unhelpful, it took them over 3hours on Monday to tell me that Barbounaki is closed, I called back asking for a booking for Tuesday but I never got a call back.|I also called around 18:15 for a blanket for my son which hadn’t turned up an hour later so I called to cancelled as I didn’t want to be disturbed as he fell asleep.|Centralising everything in an understaffed sold out hotel is clearly not working! I invite you to listen to the calls if they are recorded.|The breakfast was ok, the buffet is extensive but the waiters especially Gioula in section 400 is unprofessional, the kind you’d expect in a fast food. This is a kids friendly hotel but stopping every 5minutes to touch and play with my son is not acceptable in my eyes which is why on the last day we went to section 200 where it’s better. I very much enjoy interaction as much as they want but they should set boundaries. Gioula was so unprofessional that she told a couple next to us out loud that their child had thrown a lot of food on the floor, to the extend that they felt so bad that the mother actually picked up everything on the floor, this was on the 24th morning if you have cameras!||The only good points about this hotel are the number of pools, the beach as well as Barbouni which had great food and great service, it must be a third-party owned restaurant as it has nothing to do with Morais in terms of service and quality!||The hotel must have picked up on Tuesday night that we were unhappy as we received a welcome gift and a call from guest services, a bit too late I’d say 12hours prior to check-out.|This has turned out to be a package hotel living on the fact they have a huge facility that can be qualified as a 5 star but the service is close to 1 star at most!|If I could have checked out on arrivaI I would have done so and gone to another hotel but i prepaid my stay with a third party and I was stuck there!

A great resort with perfect staff, lovely clean rooms and great bars. Eleni was a lovely smiling face at breakfast each day, the buffet was amazing with so much choice and the lovely omlette makers deserve 5 stars with the trickiest but most important job with demanding clients. The entertainment by the bar was great as were the cocktails. We will definitely be back.

We came as part of a group for 7nights golf break|Very nice room, comfortable beds, would have liked bigger bath towels but there were always plenty of them. Very extensive choice for breakfast and dinner in the main buffet restaurant , very attentive staff. We ate at the speciality restaurants and these were great. Advise that you take a drinks package. Drinks in any bar/ restaurant is very expensive eg €18 for a small glass of wine €20 for a G&T|Golf set up is second to none with excellent manicured courses, your clubs are looked after and ready for you on each day ready in your buggy (buggy was included ) then returned to your room on your last day . Again very attentive staff|Shuttles available to courses and also to the W hotel and shopping area next door|One negative for me would be the poolside sun-beds which have no cushions and would expect them to have these for a 5 star hotel|Very vast and easy to get lost. Excellent gym facilities, water park and beach

One of, if not the best hotels we’ve ever stayed in. The service was excellent, breakfast buffet superb. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. |Would like to mention the 2 waitresses in Onuki , especially Paula, whose service was exceptional. Will definitely be coming back.
