First off this little town is a hidden gem. While it really appears to be struggling to survive, boy does it have some fun/great/unique not to miss spots. The Wheelhouse is one of the not to miss spots in this area. Great service, eclectic fun place, great beers(at least the stout (the “bomb”)was) and we had breakfast selections that were very good (great scrambled eggs) and the mushroom appetizer was terrific.

Stumbled upon this gem located in a small town. From the outside you can tell the place is quirky in a good way. When you walk in you immediately feel the good vibes - love all the plants and the calming feel. Great place to settle down after a hike at the local state park. Got there around 2:30 and was pleased they still had some breakfast options. Ordered a dirty chai, the roundhouse breakfast plate, fried mushrooms and a finished with a desert of the local cider. Dirty Chai - spot on and was delicious! 5/5 Roundhouse - pancakes were good and came of butter and syrup, bacon was crispy and scrambled eggs were fresh! 5/5 Fried Mushrooms: nice and crispy exterior with full mushrooms, came with a choice of sauces and waiter eagerly gave two choices. Perfectly cooked 5/5 Cider - believe it was cherry cider from over from Eureka, winter gave the whole backstory and sounded quite lovely but did mentioned the quality had slipped a bit from the supplier. Overall it was alright, but wouldn’t order again 3/5. Staff was engaged, knowledgeable and served to go waters for the hot day (was over 100 outside where we left). Great touch! I didn’t get a photo of it, but the adjacent room had quite the beer selection and also full of board games. Overall great experience and venture off Main Street! I could definitely see myself coming bad over and over again if I lived closer. Great local gem!

Google
This place is… otherworldly. We walked in and heard the sounds of a river- we looked down and heard we were standing above one (literally). You could also SEE the river through the floor in another part of the room. We were greeted by the most friendly staff, insisting that we have a fun time. He got us started with a super fun board game after we placed our order for food and coffee. The place is filled with hundreds of games, and lively plants. The food was just ok, but the iced coffee and ambiance was amazinggggg.

Stopped by to get coffee. The decoration of this store surprised me, and I really like it. My favorite is the board game corner. They have a big collection of board games for rent and arcade games. This is already a great hangout place for me. I ordered cafe mocha, and carne asada fries. The coffee smelled amazing, and I love the chocolate flavor. The meat in the fried was well seasoned, and the fries was very crispy! I finished it within 5 minutes even if I was not hungry! I will come back again for sure!

Everything about this place is spectacular. Best sandwich (Tofu Hoagie!) on the PCT so far. Vibes are incredible and everyone that works here are rockstars. Just the kindest people.

Lucky enough to be here during the first snow storm of the season! Walked to this wonderful place from our Air BnB. Service was top notch and we loved enjoying our delicious breakfast while watching the snow. Will be returning for dinner!! Edit: Returned for dinner. Everything was wonderful! Loved playing video games from the 80s/90s. Once again service was fantastic and staff were super friendly.

Google
Stopped by for breakfast and ended up spending most of the day here after rain spoiled our hiking plans. We're big nerds and were thoroughly impressed with their board game collection (they even have a Crokinole set!) They have a special menu just for Belgian lambics. Since we were settling in for 5+ hours, we tried a bottle of the apricot lambic. It had a complex tartness--definitely recommend giving it a try if you're in the mood for a splurge. We also tried their smores croissant, (currently not a regular menu item, but they should add it because it was amazing). They toasted the marshmallows, so they had that perfect light crunch on the outside. All the staff were friendly and fun to talk to. There were plenty of free tables, even though it was a Saturday. I love how they've kept the historic charm of the building, but renovated it with some quirky modern twists. If we lived local, we'd be here constantly.

Yelp
disclaimer: first off - we are a group of cafe snobs from the Bay Area. my group of 6 throughly had a great time lunching at the Wheelhouse after a morning hike at Ney Springs + Faery falls nearby. menu items we really enjoyed: the fries were phenomenal. the deep fried mushrooms were tasty. the tofu hoagie (substituted bread for rice) was yummy and had flavour. my tea connoisseur loved the black currant tea so much she got more tea bags to-go. the ambiance was great for hanging out/chit chatting or reading. there were pay for play boardgames, we didn't ask about those. space was a bit chilly on this particular february day, but the staff (dudes in hoodies) made us feel welcome. the bathroom was clean.

Yelp
We were here for dinner on a Sunday evening , and were probably the last to be seated. There was plenty of space. The place has a really cute vibe and the servers went above and beyond to make our experience fun. This place has tons of board games to choose from , and one of them helped us pick a fun and quick game to play. As vegetarians we tried the following: Deep fried mushrooms : 5/5. This was really crisp to bite and was a great snack. Vegan BLT sandwich: 5/5. This was a great vegan sandwich. Really enjoyed the fries that came with it. We also enjoyed the drinks we ordered , the peach lambic tasted like a mimosa, and a Belgian funnel which was great as well!

Yelp
Overdue for a 5 star review from me. I will come here every time I am passing through dunsmuir. I have been here multiple times and every time the food is amazing! For breakfast I've tried the burrito and classic breakfast and both are just so dang good. Interestingly, this place has also evolved as the time has passed. If you are here on yelp take my word for it and don't miss this gem on your way through. Great atmosphere Unique decorations Amazing breakfast Fresh, flavorful food Excellent craft beer choices So many board games

Yelp
Breakfast was yummy. Decorations were cute and place was spacious. The best part was that the staff was super friendly. I will stop by again, next time we are in the area.

Yelp
I went here with a friend of mine after a day hike. What a cool little place. They have an arcade game that you can play and literally hundreds of different board games. I had a grilled cheese sandwich that was pretty damn good.

Yelp
Super glad for vegan fare but the sandwich we picked was super bland. For $14, expected a little better in terms of flavor and nutrition. The vegan BLT had no flavor - some fried tempeh, unseasoned tomato and handful of salad leaves, with some mayo. Deep fried mushrooms were super crispy but lacked any depth of flavor - had to douse them in the side sauce. Service was speedy and the space looked great inside. Vegans, bring some hot sauce.

Barbara R.

Yelp
What a terrific place. Uniquely special! Service was fast and friendly. There are walls full of board games you can play - I've never seen such a variety. To top it all off the food is delicious and plentiful! (We'll be sharing a sandwich next visit.). I'd read on someone else's review that they'll stop back whenever they go through Dunsmuir - we will too! Oh, and there's a stream running through the building! I told you it was unique!

Yelp
Clean, wonderful atmosphere excellent customer service wonderful food, breakfast and lunch and the best mimosas around. Highly recommend definitely five star.

Yelp
Cute spot!! I love the funkiness of this spot. You can eat a meal, come for beers and draft drinks, rent games, listen to live music when it's happening and enjoy the decor which is super fun. We opted to get some fries and drinks to reward ourselves after our mini adventure day. Fries are super thick cut, steak wedge style and they were good! Usually I'm not a fan of a super thick fry because I love a crispy fry and the two don't usually go together, but these held their own in texture which was nice. Great beer selection both on tap and to buy out of the cases. Seems like a nice spot for locals to relax and enjoy.

Yelp
We calm in to take a quick coffee break around 4 pm and most places around the town were closed, but thankfully because we landed in this gem. You walk in to a water stream right below you- literally. They have a glass floor so you can see it and hear it. They also have tons of games to play and hang out. They have coffees, booze, and food. The decor is super cute to. Must check it out

Yelp
Great food, service is far above expectations and the ambiance is lovely! They have Belgium's that I have a hard time finding anywhere else, there is a window in the floor to view the creek that runs down the mountain to the river. When it's not busy you can hear the creek under the building. It's a very special place that we will frequent often. Also the employees especially Will are just amazingly positive, informative and friendly!

Yelp
Found this spot on our drive to Oregon, it did not disappoint. Food was delicious and enough to keep us going on our drive. Tried the breakfast burrito with avocado, the hash browns in the burrito were perfection! Ordered a grilled cheese for the pup which she loved and their dirty chai latte so amazing! Chill vibes inside with board games and cool plants as decorations, so pretty! Service was beyond amazing! Everyone helpful and friendly! A must try!!

Yelp
Wow! We were driving to Portland and stopped here for lunch. Did not expect such great food! The vegan BLT was soooo good! Inside is super cute. Tons of plants and a water feature. Staff was awesome. Def worth the stop!

Yelp
What a surprise to find... A delightful (a bit "hipster" for lack of better words) cafe in a side street in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. My apologies to the people of Dunsmuir, I am aware that description might be miss interpreted, but honestly, that remoteness perception is what makes your cute town compelling to city folks in search of a get-away... in any case, this cafe is an oasis of coziness beckoning you inside during their wet mountain winter. The locale is packed with a great selection of Belgian beers, a completely unexpected menu (muscles in white wine or beer, seriously) a welcoming staff, brand new unique board games, a music stage, and even a classic home-made arcade with 1000s of classic games for the kids (mercifully with the sound off)... According to the owner, it is all inspired by similar places from his hometown Philadelphia. It also has a hidden treasure in the floor between a couple of tables. I will not reveal for the sake of mystery... find it on your own!

Yelp
OMG! Hand-down THE BEST Philly Cheesesteak I have ever had!!! It's so good, it should be illegal Cozy, beautifully decorated space inside, friendly staff and there's outside seating area too!

Yelp
We stayed overnight in Dunsmuir last weekend before heading home. The hotel we stayed at recommended The Wheelhouse, as did the record store. The site is currently undergoing a remodel, so it's only open for take out only. There is outdoor seating, but because it's on a hill/slope, your sitting at an angle. You go up to the door and there's a window. Someone will answer the door and you place your order. The menu's are on the window and wow, the beer menu is quite extensive. There are sandwiches available and some vegan options as well. We decided to split a BLT (good idea on a hot day). We took our order back to our hotel and ate int he lobby. Good sandwich and beer! Definitely a go to place the next time we visit!

Yelp
Lectured by gutter-punk waiter on why he doesn't have time to talk about any beverages other than beer, inexpert wait service, awful tasting overcooked muscles in sour vinegar broth, all mushrooms overripe and overcooked, creating a leather chew cuisine unlike any I've experienced. Someone paid someone to put up the facade of a restaurant and want you to spend money to figure out they have no idea what they are doing. Grifters.

Yelp
An excellent stop along the five for dinner. It also happened to be Friday trivia night! I had a classic Philly sandwich with fries and a draft beer. The beer was nice, no complaints. The Philly was done excellent. Came to me still nice and hot and melty. The bread was just right for a Philly and the thing was HUGE! It was pretty much two. The fries were handcut and cooked well. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. The decor was really cute and colorful and the place was super clean and comfortable.

Yelp
Crazy good food. I go the pancakes in the afternoon... made me sad that I didn't come in earlier for a full on breakfast My daughter got the BLT and it was good... Love the games around the space This is a great place to stop on your trip Service was wonderful.... . They even gave us tips on the weather where we were going.... Going to stop in again

Yelp
The best place to stop on the I5 for breakfast. We make it a plan every Thanksgiving to stop here. Great vibe, excellent breakfast burrito, pancakes and video games for the kids, and a well crafted cup of coffee.

Yelp
We've been going to the Wheelhouse for several years - trips up and down I-5. These guys are a truly local business and a community hub. The folks are friendly and as others have said, there is an underground stream visible through a glass inset in the floor. They have expanded - now twice the size! Games on one side and restaurant on the other-though sure you can eat or play in either. The bar has a ton of options for those that love their beers. The selection of games to play are fantastic - board games of every kind. The food is marvelous - the hand cut fries most especially. I like to try and eat vegetarian and it's great here! Don't worry there is food for omnivores too - the crispy chicken sandwich is almost enough for two! We just ate here yesterday 03 Aug 2023 and all four of us were stoked on the food and the place.

Yelp
This is an amazing cafe in Mt. Shashta. The place is very well decorated and looks very chic. We had veggie sandwich, bagel burger and a salad. They offer salad and fries on the side. Everything we had was amazing. Staff is nice and polite. They have good local beer and wine on the tap and they were delicious too. All in all an amazing dining experience. If we go to Shashta, we are coming here again for sure.

Lori M.

Yelp
Food was outstanding. Very friendly staff. We sat right next to a window, IN THE FLOOR! A creek runs under it. So cute!

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch on our way home to Oregon. Such a cute historic town! Very friendly staff and welcoming environment. We all enjoyed playing Mario Brothers (for free!). The BLT and breakfast burrito were very good! We'd definitely come here again.

Yelp
We had breakfast here. They have an outstanding bottle beer selection. The food and vibe was great. Going back tomorrow on our way out of town.

Yelp
I suggest you find this gem in downtown Dunsmuir. (formally the Brown Trout) Besides making the most awesome Philly sandwiches, breakfast served all day, tofu for the wife and the deep fried mushrooms being on point, they also have a tremendous selection of beers in the room adjacent to the dining area. Rumor has it the owner hails from Philadelphia and that explains the Philly sandwich perfection thing. We ranted, raved, got all starry eye and gushed compliments to the friendly staff. On our drive back to Redding, still taking about our experience, we realized we forgot to tip! That is simply the worst...unforgivable. We plan on going up soon and they must accept a 40% tip and our deepest apologies. Such a good restaurant that deserves better guest than us. Of course we'll have to order another sandwich. LOL

Yelp
Such a hidden gem! We stopped here on our way up north & were so delighted with this amazing restaurant. Super friendly servers & very welcoming & attentive. Ambiance is very nice, love the running water as you enter & the thriving plants everywhere. We ordered a couple coffees as well as an appetizer (mussels in white wine & garlic) both 10/10. The rest of the menu looks sooo good I wish I came on an empty stomach haha!! Will definitely try and make it back here again.
google avatar

Laura N.

Yelp
This is such a charming and welcoming establishment. The front room is pleasantly decorated and you can hear the water running underneath the floor grate, which is part of its historical charm. The back room is covered with shelves displaying an extensive variety of tabletop games that your party can rent for a small fee. The sandwiches we got were filling and tasty, and their fries were the best I've had. The restaurant does have an accessible restroom. However, the sidewalks are atrocious for anyone with even minor mobility issues. Which is NOT the restaurant's fault, that's a Dunsmuir city issue. But if you are able to access it, it's worth the effort.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't even like tofu but this was made so well, fries were the best fries I've ever had

Yelp
Making our way up to Crater Lake for the long holiday weekend, we stopped at the Wheelhouse in Dunsmuir for a cup of coffee and a small bite of breakfast. We each ordered a breakfast croissant which came with cheese, scrambled eggs, and bacon. The croissant was light and buttery and perfectly held together with the gooey cheese and scrambled eggs. Everything you would want and a simple breakfast sandwich. My latte was quite tasty and warmed me up on the cold morning, especially before our hike. The worker was extremely kind and engaging, offering suggestions of places to hike with our two new puppies.

Yelp
Funky fun spot to play board games with the kids while having a few drinks. Nice selection of beers! Nice light and fresh plants add to the atmosphere.

Yelp
I enjoyed dinner at The Wheelhouse, delicious sandwiches, friendly staff, great atmosphere. If you are nearby be sure to visit.

Yelp
We are from out of town and loved that there were vegan substitutions for basically everything! We ordered the vegan Buffalo Philly cheesesteak seitan fries, deep fried mushrooms with marinara and lemon vinaigrette, deep fried tofu hoagie. I asked for extra Buffalo sauce to really douse the fries. It was bomb! But I would've appreciated more vegan cheese, there wasn't much on there. The fries were also rather overcooked in my opinion, almost on the verge of burnt. Next time I'll be getting a sandwich instead of the fries. The deep fried mushrooms still linger in my mind. The lemon vinaigrette was out of this world, definitely get it! Wow! I didn't even touch the marinara after discovering it. Absolutely delicious. The deep fried tofu hoagie had such unique flavor. It came with sweet chili sauce that was sweet, but not overpowering with the rest of the flavors. We also got a couple beers, I loved their German pilsner! Light and easy to drink. After ordering I saw they had a really extensive beer list, which was super cool! The atmosphere was so cute aesthetically, with plants and cool art on the walls. A band actually came in towards the end of our meal, and played in the background. They sounded great! This place is a gem. I would love to return.

Maya F.

Yelp
Quirky small town. Great stop on the way north. Food was good! Had the cheesesteak, BLT, grilled cheese and some really fresh salad. Good beer / Cider selections as well. Good amount of seating indoors. Happen to be there during a live music session which was another great touch to the place. Staff / Service was awesome. Super friendly. Lots of board games you can reserve to play if you want. Unexpected place. Would definitely stop there again if driving same route.
google avatar

Yelp
Water runs underneath the building and fills the room with sounds of a babbling brook; really amazing atmosphere. Food is awesome, we had the mussels and enjoyed a coffee. This is a must stop off of I-5
google avatar

Yelp
The cashier was so kind and the Philly cheesesteak fries were AMAZING. If you're in town, be sure to try the beer too. They serve it all day and nothing tastes better than a sour apple beer with some fries. And an extra thank you to the cashier! He was so friendly and it was the highlight of our day. We're from out of town and it was a mission to get here. His welcoming personality was a nice breathe of fresh air after a difficult morning. I would rate this place 6 stars if I could, make sure you get something to go on the way to your hikes!
google avatar

Dana A.

Yelp
One of the best places to come for a delicious sandwich or all day breakfast and a tasty beverage. I love the sandwiches particularly the pizza cheesesteak. Drool worthy. They have a beautiful space to relax and do study or work if needed. WiFi available is very helpful in Dunsmuir. The owners are very conscious of the quality of their food and they do their best to make sure it's all local and organic. You can be rest assured at this restaurant.

Yelp
The Wheel of Time turns... (5/5 green stars) Straight off the Coast Starlight train at 6:50 am, I met the staff of the Wheelhouse standing outside having their pre-opening morning coffee and watching the train action. I doubled back in 10 minutes, glad of somewhere to go have coffee and breakfast. I highly recommend this place if you're either in Dunsmuir or just passing by and want to have a bite, coffee, or beer somewhere with character. Or to play a game - they have perhaps around 150 games in the place, good strategy and fun games and some classics too. If you come to play, it costs $2 per person or $5 per group (like Victory Point in Berkeley, but cheaper). I had a latte and breakfast burrito - both were excellent and made with care. It's a fun place to sit and get some insights into Dunsmuir - everyone knows everyone and the Wheelhouse is the new hub. I'm also giving them 5/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: * Their coffee is from Northbound Roasters; organic beans roasted in Mount Shasta. * Their eggs are pasture-raised and organic. * Their regular milk is organic (and they have alternatives). * They have several vegan and vegetarian options. * Good beer list from CA brewers - most from North Coast (certified B Corp) and employee-owned Modern Times. * They have a close connection to local organic farm, Volcanic Organics, where they garner supplies. * Community gathering spot (where you can also play games without having to own them). Ever written a green star review? Please contact me if you'd like to know more!

Yelp
Who wouldn't LOVE the most AMAZING pancakes in the world, and YUMMERS draft Vanilla ale?!!??!? This place is AMAZBALLS!!!! I live about 3 hrs away, but come here EVERY TIME I come to Shasta to visit my sons.

Joy A.

Yelp
What amazing food and service! Outstanding cheesesteaks, made with the original, authentic Philly bread. Don't leave without having some of their hand cut fries - to die for!

Yelp
K and I stayed nearby and came here for breakfast before we headed out to Mt. Shasta. Make sure you check out the time before you go since they're closed on Tues and Wed. Definitely come here for breakfast or lunch if you're in the area! FOOD: Philly cheesesteak was so good and pretty worth it for the size! I don't think you can go wrong with any of their food options, they all sound good. SERVICE: Due to covid precautions, they only allowed to-go when I went. They have a menu by the door that you can order from. The guy that was taking the order was so cheerful and nice! What a nice way to start the morning. K and I would definitely come back! We wished we had a bit more time so we could've gotten another meal here.

Yelp
I think this place quite simply has the best tasting coffee in all of Siskiyou county. It's extremely rare to find a place that is open late (8pm!), serves breakfast all day and the coffee doesn't suck! I'm really looking forward to their indoor seating opening up, as it's not near my house and it is getting colder outside. One suggestion for the owner, for the outdoor seating area, please add some hornet traps! There is a nest nearby and ordering food will get you swarmed.

Yelp
Stopped by with our pups for some brews and sat outside at one of their cafe tables. Friendly staff and customers alike, tasty brews which were refreshing on a warm afternoon. This place has a really cool vibe inside!

Yelp
Best just to hang out in town. Interesting menu. Amazing and extensive collection of bottled beers.

Great place, great prices and decent size portions. I had the shrimp po'boy with fries and everything was very tasty.

Yelp
I had the breakfast sandwich with a croissant and veggie bacon. We are outside, as we have a dog. It was perfectly scrumptious. The setting was my favorite style, hip without trying to be. I was so charmed, I took a few pictures which I will share here.
