The White Horse Inn

The location is breathtaking, staff are amazing, everything is super clean. But their kitchen... OMG! Forget about London fine dining just travel here instead. Best steak in the UK. And definitely try the duck. Or anything from the desert menu. Absolutely fantastic food! I would and will go back.

We were looking for a pub which was open on a bank holiday and found the White Horse at Compton Bassett. I made a booking just in case, which was extremely easy and made sure the 2 of us had a table. We arrived, and i managed to get the last parking slot. The Pub appears to have numerous other facilities, a banquet hall, a nice garden with seating and tables, and of course, it does rooms as well. We were seated in a nice position and ordered drinks. We had asparagus and white bait. The white bait and squid were cooked just how i like them, so very enjoyable. Would definitely recommend. Mains were pie of the day (lamb) and the white horse burger. The pie was so crammed with meat in a short crust pastry it was amazing. I could have done with just a little more gravy. A wonderful meal and i will definitely be telling friends n family.

Tucked away in the beautiful Compton Bassett countryside, The White Horse is a true gem of a gastro pub restaurant and inn. 🌿🍴 With food at their restaurant, a solid two AA Rosette standard, we were treated to an unforgettable meal. Hands down, the best steak pie I’ve ever had – packed with generous chunks of tender meat, top-quality fresh ingredients, and served with buttery, dreamy mash. Absolute comfort food dreams. 🥧🥔 Sian’s lamb rump was cooked to perfection – juicy, flavoursome, and beautifully presented. And let’s not forget the starter… the cheddar and ham hock terrine was epic – rich, rustic, and bursting with flavour. 🧀🥓 If you're anywhere near Wiltshire, this place is well worth the detour.

Good food in pretty village location. Roast £20 & extra Roast Pots £5 Fish & chips £19 One of the better places to eat in the area and we had a good experience. I attach photos of olives and bread £9, nibbles to start And Roast Beef Sunday Lunch.

Met Ashley on arrival with a big smile on his face. What a great guy. He is literally everywhere. Took us to our room which is separate to the pub. The room was beautiful and clean and overlooking a stunning landscape. The breakfast was so tasty and amazing presentation. Again Ashley is there to greet you. The pub it's self is traditional and the locals were very friendly. I would definitely recommend this hidden gem.

Great pub, really nice food. If I'm hyper critical, asked where to sit "anywhere", then asked to move tables as we were 2 people sat at a 4 top. Which I understand, but on a Tuesday night, when there was only one other couple eating... Come on, just let me sit where I pick. Food, excellent, seafood starter, amazing, and one of the best burgers I've had in a while, highly recommend.

Visited for Sunday lunch, the service was excellent and despite it being busy the food came out quickly and everything was hot. We asked for extra gravy with our roasts which was no problem and everything was cooked perfectly. All the desserts in my group not only looked great but tasted amazing. The pub also has a lovely, cosy atmosphere with a big pub garden too, so great in the summer or colder months. I would definitely come back here!

Review is just for the restaurant Food: 4 stars Service: 2 stars Had dinner on a Thurs evening, after we were told it has 2 rosettes. Food: was mostly good, with some improvements. We enjoyed the venison terrine, lamb croquettes, & squid/whitebait starter. For mains (~£18-27): the pan fried cod was dry, though the sauce & gratin were tasty & well cooked. The burger had Welsh rarebit (very interesting! And a nice touch), but the burger itself was well done. Strange. The lamb shank sauce was delicious & the best main. Dessert (~£9): the pear crumble had stale crumble on top, that tasted like expired cereal. We sent it back & the chef agreed the same. Sticky toffee was good, but needed a larger dollop of ice cream. The dark chocolate delice with basil sorbet was the star of the dessert. Service was a genuine disappointment. The server on Thurs evening couldn't answer a single question, but she did smile at us. So there's that? For the price (I'd expect a little cheaper given these are London prices & the food would've been MUCH better), I'd expect more & better. But given there isn't a lot in the area, this'll do.

This lovely old Inn is English classic in every sense and well worth the little side trip into the tiny hamlet of Compton Bassett. The food is delightful and the staff makes everyone feel like you're a local. There is a causal elegance to the place that is so very rare these days.

Went there for Sunday lunch today, obviously a very popular place. The food was excellent apart from the Yorkshire puds which were too big and very dry- I must admit i haven't yet found a place that makes decent Yorkshires so this won't stop me going again as the beef was grand! and they certainly weren't stingy with the portions! As veggie lovers however we found that a small dish between four wasn't nearly enough. Some confusion around timing of coffees and desserts but despite this the desserts were awesome! and the liqueur coffee was lovely. Also the house white wine was really good and none of that aftertaste you can get from cheap house wines. All in all a pleasant place- quiet even tho it was packed as there was no 'muzak' blaring in the background and no games machines in sight- the tables were far enough apart from each other that we felt we had a degree of privacy. The staff were friendly and attentive- if a little confused sometimes lol I will definitely be going back!!
