The RMS Olympic Dining Room – Alnwick, England - Gastro Obscura

"The RMS Olympic was one of two sister ships—along with the HMHS Britannic—to the ill-fated RMS Titanic. She was the first of the three to launch in 1910 and soon went into service in the First World War, remaining in service until 1935. The Olympic’s First Class Lounge was later removed and now serves as a restaurant yet again, this time in an Alnwick hotel. When she was auctioned off and made her final voyage up the Tyne River to Jarrow in 1936, she was stripped of her dining room. A local hotelier, Mr. Algenon Smart, successfully bid on the original oak wood paneling, stained glass windows, mirrors, and ceiling from the First Class Lounge, along with its revolving door and the Aft First Class Staircase. He installed these features, nearly identical to the Titanic’s dining room attributes (they were both designed and fitted by the same team of craftsmen at nearly the same time), in the White Swan Hotel where they’ve remained since. As you enter the hotel, you pass through the original revolving door used on the Olympic to keep sea breezes out of its restaurant. The lounge is in the Louis XV-style based on interiors at the famed Palace of Versailles. However, it has a more British twist, as it uses English oak finishes rather than gilding. This dining room is widely believed to be so similar to the Titanic’s that it has been used in films to represent the famous ship. In fact, when now-retired U.S. Navy officer Robert Ballard found fittings around the Titanic wreck, he used the lounge at the White Swan as a reference. You don’t have to be a guest at the White Swan Hotel to sit in the dining room for a meal which is a treat since the restaurant is the closest one can get to dining on board the Titanic. Know Before You Go Please call before visiting as it is often closed for private events." - rbenn250, vickipowelluk, mandydryden

Had an overnight stay here at the beginning of December. Fabulous location in the centre of Alnwick and within walking distance of all the local attractions. Hotel was great and the staff very welcoming and friendly. A special thanks to Fay and Jordan at reception for all their help and information! Our winter package included evening meal and breakfast in the Olympic restaurant. Food was great and surroundings wonderful. Breakfast was served straight from the kitchen - freshly cooked and hot. Rooms were very clean, comfortable and warm. I would definitely go back and stay at the White Swan and would highly recommend to others.

Of course the unique selling point of this place is the Olympic lounge which is a must see if you have any interest in Titanic . Bar is a rip off nearly £10 for a rum and coke. and unbelievably my partner when asking for a sparkling water at breakfast was told it was chargeable 🤣 just nipped upstairs and got one of the free ones out of the room instead, same brand!

We stayed at the White Swan 18th February to attend the last night of the panto at the theatre close by, the location was perfect, the staff were lovely, they were happy to serve us dinner before the show, it was an excellent meal, and the room was comfortable clean and tidy and well equipped. And the night porter let us in when we got back late! And the breakfast was excellent too, so 5 stars.

Myself and 4 friends popped in here here for lunch on Saturday 30 November 24. It was a little busy but we recieved excellent friendly service. The food was lovely and is reasonably priced. We would definitely go back. It was lovely and clean throughout. We went in to see the Olympic Dining room. It's beautiful. Didn't stay so can't comment on the rooms.

Ideal place for a couple of nights away. Location is good for the local area as well as a good place to venture further afield. Staff were very good, attentive. Rooms were comfortable and quiet ( though we had a rear facing room so this may have helped!) only downside was the condensation on the windows but it’s an old building with single glazing.

We feel very lucky to have been able to stay at the White Swan Hotel, as we have been wanting to visit for ages and even booked but had to ask to move to the following weekend as the weather was to bad to travel. The staff were brilliant and made it possible without hassle, every member of the team we met were lovely. We enjoyed dining in the Olympic dining room, and could imagine how grand it must have been. George was our waiter and he was great, we really enjoyed reading about the history. We both enjoyed our meals, I always prefer any sauces separate, which he made sure without any problem. We look forward to returning in the better weather next year.

Have stayed at the White Swan regularly over 30 years. I am normally part of a shooting trip. At present I consider the Swan as good as its ever been. Very competitive price for B&B with evening meal. The dining room is superb, bedrooms provide all the facilities you need, Staff friendly and obliging. Staying agin end of month

We booked in for 3 nights in October, and requested a lower floor, as my wife has mobility issues. This was not a problem. The car park behind the hotel was full, but loads of free parking very close by. Check in was smooth, and easy. The room was no 9 on the lower floor, but had to cross a small courtyard to get to it. Room, was warm, cosy and clean. However the tele was small, and a bit dark to watch, which did not bother us. The highlight was the Olympic panelled dining room, although we did not have an evening meal here, breakfast was served here. The lounge area was pleasant, served coffees, drinks and bar meals. We did have one meal here which was totally fine, but not outstanding. The staff we encountered were all lovely and friendly, esp a mention to "Channelle"? in the bar. Would definitely stay here again if in the area.

Yelp
This rating is for the Hardy's cafe located within the hotel. I enjoyed their afternoon tea served with champagne and chocolate strawberries. Everything was tasty- the sandwiches, sweets, and biscuits. The staff even allowed me to take photos of the famous Olympic dining lounge after my meal - stunning! If you have a chance to try dinner in this place, I'd do it!

Yelp
I recently stayed here while at a friend's wedding and I have to say I wasn't overly impressed. When we arrived we were told that check in was delayed so we didn't have enough time to get ready for the wedding and had to use a cramped staff room to change in (and subsequent arrivals didn't even get that). The staff weren't especially helpful, we had to phone for our own taxis, despite not knowing the area, and for the price paid, the bedroom was disappointingly old fashioned and poorly equipped (although the bathroom was very nice). At breakfast, the hotel ran out of orange juice, among other things, and what food was left stopped being served at 9.30 - a little early for some of the more hungover guests. There's limited choice in this little village for places to stay but my advice would be to find somewhere else!
