No complaints. The hotel itself was clean, comfortable and very good value, with friendly and helpful staff.
We chose the hotel because we wanted to eat in its incredible dining room, which is all wood panelling and glass panels salvaged from the first class lounge of Olympic (sister ship to the Titanic) so we thought we'd stay there too. And the restaurant is indeed a very beautiful room.
We felt it was sad they didn't make more of a feature of this extraordinary asset. It was a slightly tired and limited menu and wine list, served very fast and made for a more mundane eating experience than the room deserved.
With a bit of imagination and investment, this place could be breathtaking. I'm thinking a live band (or at least streamed music) playing Cole Porter, Berlin, Gershwin, 1910s and 1920s dance hall music. Turn the run down little bar in the corner of the room into a pre-dinner cocktail bar with cocktails that would have been served on the Titanic and Olympic, and decent whisky and gin. A better wine list. A proper, chef-cooked menu, majoring on fish and local produce, for a proper fine dining experience. Encourage people to dress up (we were the only people in the room who did). Move all the dress-down casual eating into the soulless modern bar at the front (ideally with better beer). It could be spectacular, and a draw for tourists in town for the castle. As it was, it felt a bit faded. A first-class lounge fallen on hard times, now just used as a space to serve a decidedly average meal.
