The RMS Olympic Dining Room – Alnwick, England - Gastro Obscura

"The RMS Olympic was one of two sister ships—along with the HMHS Britannic—to the ill-fated RMS Titanic. She was the first of the three to launch in 1910 and soon went into service in the First World War, remaining in service until 1935. The Olympic’s First Class Lounge was later removed and now serves as a restaurant yet again, this time in an Alnwick hotel. When she was auctioned off and made her final voyage up the Tyne River to Jarrow in 1936, she was stripped of her dining room. A local hotelier, Mr. Algenon Smart, successfully bid on the original oak wood paneling, stained glass windows, mirrors, and ceiling from the First Class Lounge, along with its revolving door and the Aft First Class Staircase. He installed these features, nearly identical to the Titanic’s dining room attributes (they were both designed and fitted by the same team of craftsmen at nearly the same time), in the White Swan Hotel where they’ve remained since. As you enter the hotel, you pass through the original revolving door used on the Olympic to keep sea breezes out of its restaurant. The lounge is in the Louis XV-style based on interiors at the famed Palace of Versailles. However, it has a more British twist, as it uses English oak finishes rather than gilding. This dining room is widely believed to be so similar to the Titanic’s that it has been used in films to represent the famous ship. In fact, when now-retired U.S. Navy officer Robert Ballard found fittings around the Titanic wreck, he used the lounge at the White Swan as a reference. You don’t have to be a guest at the White Swan Hotel to sit in the dining room for a meal which is a treat since the restaurant is the closest one can get to dining on board the Titanic. Know Before You Go Please call before visiting as it is often closed for private events." - rbenn250, vickipowelluk, mandydryden

Great location Booked 2 rooms for one night and then one room for 2 nights. Were given the 2 rooms right away from each other no room to change. The one you had to go outside to get to. Had to change rooms for the second night into a ‘delux’ room. The bathroom was so small I banged my head on the old towel rail sitting on the toilet. All rooms were cold with no heating in any bathrooms. Room 123 had scolding hot water which was really dangerous. The windows here were draughty Best room was standard 204 but still cold in bathroom Rooms were clean but quite dated. Breakfast was ok but no spoons in fruit bowel and cereal had to ask and also tea spoons. Tea tasted funny not sure if it was full fat milk Food was plenty though and fresh Staff were reasonably friendly although on arrival we could drop our bag at 1pm but wasnt allowed to use the toilet despite having travelled over 4 hours. Had to go to another coffee shop. No baggage room.

The staff throughout were friendly and helpful. The room was fine, with the biggest bed we have ever been in and a good supply of tea and biscuits. Excellent 3 course dinner and full breakfast, with quality menus and food surpassing the usual pub grub. Good service. The historic Olympic Room, 1st class staircases (and even the revolving door is worth noting!) are magnificent and certainly add to the enjoyment. Thank you.

What a stunning hotel steeped in amazing history. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was lovely and im the Olympic suite. Makes you feel how people lived when cruise ships were in those times. Room was lovely and clean and stunning bathroom. Only negative was the bed felt it needed to change as it felt it lost its spring.

I was aware of the White Swan from a previous visit to Alnwick, and when we planned to revisit the town I was pleasantly surprised at the price of a stay! We were greeted at Reception in a professional manner, and then went to our room to find that it was very good, and had a good view of the town. The location of the hotel was ideal for accessing the town centre, the Castle, Barter Books and a selection of pubs. Our dinner was enjoyed in the Olympic Suite, good food in stunning surroundings; the service was also very good. The following morning, the breakfast was also enjoyable and we were well looked after by the staff. All in all, an enjoyable stay and we look forward to a further stay at some point!

Room was big and had a nice layout with view of main street. The hotel is close to castle and shoppping, so location is good. The breakfast room is what is exceptional about this hotel. That is the good. NOW THE BAD! The room we had was up a few floors, which we knew. When people used their showers our room smelled of raw sewage! When using our shower you had to hold your breath or gag on the smell. I talked to staff and they said unfortunately we couldn't be moved because they were fully booked. They did put in a maintenance request to have it checked AFTER WE WERE GOING TO BE CHECKED OUT! We left windows open, even when it got cool outside, and the bathroom door shut at all times which seamed to help. I feel they should have at least nocked something off my bill, but alas NO. Full price for a sewage smelling room.

On arrival at the hotel we were warmly welcomed by the staff who were extremely helpful and friendly. Hotel parking was good and secure. Our room was very large, clean, fresh, lovely big bathroom, and overlooked the back of the hotel with oblique views of Alnwick Castle and overlooking the exterior of the Olympic Suite. ||The hotel itself was unfortunately rather “faded” in certain areas; particularly the Olympic Suite which I specifically wanted to see as a life long fan of Titanic and her sister ships. The room itself was still very impressive though and definitely worth seeing.||Hardys bar within the hotel has been recently refreshed and is pleasant for drinks.||However our main issue was the food served at the Hotel; particularly the evening set menu served in the Olympic suit which consisted of Fish, Chicken or Gammon served with the same vegetable medley for each. I would have expected such a well known place to have a much more varied and premium menu, and I wouldn’t recommend it as there are better restaurants/pubs close by providing more variety. The continental/full English breakfast the next morning, also served in the Olympic suite was adequate and well cooked, even though our preferred choices were unavailable. ||Overall I would highly recommend staying at the hotel as fundamentally still a very pleasant experience. However if you want to to see the Olympic Suite I would suggest just paying the £2 fee charged for none residents to view it and eat elsewhere

A really good experience with lovely rooms and facilities. Staff were so friendly and very helpful. Food experience was truly excellent and for a large party it was served to the table reasonably fast and hot. |Sitting rooms and bar area was very comfortable and the history of the place made for a worthwhile stay. |The only slight drawback is the lack of a lift. For a party such as ours, mostly around the early 70,s to 80,s it was a little trying but it did not prove to be a bar to a revisit in the future.

Our room had a double bed - when we pulled back the duvet we found the duvet cover was much too big - it was for I would guess a king size duvet and as a result there was lots of excess/loose material - in addition the sheet was all rumpled Looking up to the ceiling there were several "dust streamers" hanging above the bed I went down to see the on duty lady who brought a "feather duster" and removed the streamers As far as the ill fitting duvet cover she said this was the only bed of this size as all other ones in the hotel were larger (queen /king?) She was very courteous and concerned and said she would note it in the log. However I felt the unique bed size explanation a bit lame Once into bed it was comfy and overall we had a pleasant stay

Yelp
This rating is for the Hardy's cafe located within the hotel. I enjoyed their afternoon tea served with champagne and chocolate strawberries. Everything was tasty- the sandwiches, sweets, and biscuits. The staff even allowed me to take photos of the famous Olympic dining lounge after my meal - stunning! If you have a chance to try dinner in this place, I'd do it!

Yelp
I recently stayed here while at a friend's wedding and I have to say I wasn't overly impressed. When we arrived we were told that check in was delayed so we didn't have enough time to get ready for the wedding and had to use a cramped staff room to change in (and subsequent arrivals didn't even get that). The staff weren't especially helpful, we had to phone for our own taxis, despite not knowing the area, and for the price paid, the bedroom was disappointingly old fashioned and poorly equipped (although the bathroom was very nice). At breakfast, the hotel ran out of orange juice, among other things, and what food was left stopped being served at 9.30 - a little early for some of the more hungover guests. There's limited choice in this little village for places to stay but my advice would be to find somewhere else!
