The RMS Olympic Dining Room – Alnwick, England - Gastro Obscura

"The RMS Olympic was one of two sister ships—along with the HMHS Britannic—to the ill-fated RMS Titanic. She was the first of the three to launch in 1910 and soon went into service in the First World War, remaining in service until 1935. The Olympic’s First Class Lounge was later removed and now serves as a restaurant yet again, this time in an Alnwick hotel. When she was auctioned off and made her final voyage up the Tyne River to Jarrow in 1936, she was stripped of her dining room. A local hotelier, Mr. Algenon Smart, successfully bid on the original oak wood paneling, stained glass windows, mirrors, and ceiling from the First Class Lounge, along with its revolving door and the Aft First Class Staircase. He installed these features, nearly identical to the Titanic’s dining room attributes (they were both designed and fitted by the same team of craftsmen at nearly the same time), in the White Swan Hotel where they’ve remained since. As you enter the hotel, you pass through the original revolving door used on the Olympic to keep sea breezes out of its restaurant. The lounge is in the Louis XV-style based on interiors at the famed Palace of Versailles. However, it has a more British twist, as it uses English oak finishes rather than gilding. This dining room is widely believed to be so similar to the Titanic’s that it has been used in films to represent the famous ship. In fact, when now-retired U.S. Navy officer Robert Ballard found fittings around the Titanic wreck, he used the lounge at the White Swan as a reference. You don’t have to be a guest at the White Swan Hotel to sit in the dining room for a meal which is a treat since the restaurant is the closest one can get to dining on board the Titanic. Know Before You Go Please call before visiting as it is often closed for private events." - rbenn250, vickipowelluk, mandydryden

I was aware of the White Swan from a previous visit to Alnwick, and when we planned to revisit the town I was pleasantly surprised at the price of a stay! We were greeted at Reception in a professional manner, and then went to our room to find that it was very good, and had a good view of the town. The location of the hotel was ideal for accessing the town centre, the Castle, Barter Books and a selection of pubs. Our dinner was enjoyed in the Olympic Suite, good food in stunning surroundings; the service was also very good. The following morning, the breakfast was also enjoyable and we were well looked after by the staff. All in all, an enjoyable stay and we look forward to a further stay at some point!

Room was big and had a nice layout with view of main street. The hotel is close to castle and shoppping, so location is good. The breakfast room is what is exceptional about this hotel. That is the good. NOW THE BAD! The room we had was up a few floors, which we knew. When people used their showers our room smelled of raw sewage! When using our shower you had to hold your breath or gag on the smell. I talked to staff and they said unfortunately we couldn't be moved because they were fully booked. They did put in a maintenance request to have it checked AFTER WE WERE GOING TO BE CHECKED OUT! We left windows open, even when it got cool outside, and the bathroom door shut at all times which seamed to help. I feel they should have at least nocked something off my bill, but alas NO. Full price for a sewage smelling room.

Pretty good, albeit the room (9) was a bit on the small side.||As for the breakfast being freshly cooked, suggesting from tone of website, that it is cooked to order - just not the case, the hot breakfast was ostensibly cooked in large ish quantities and left to keep warm under those dreadful heat lamps. In my opinion, this does nothing to enhance the customer experience.in fact when I asked for a FRESHLY cooked egg, I was give the next egg from the kitchen which was also under the heated lamp. ||It would be so easy to improve the food quality to get to A|a 10/10 as opposed to 4/10||A real shame because the place has so much going for it.

Double room including breakfast on a Friday evening cost £108. Room clean with tv and tea/coffee facilities. Decent shower. Located right in the centre. Lovely bar area. Friendly receptionists. However, waiting staff in restaurant at breakfast could have waited until customers had finished eating before very hurriedly clearing and resetting tables. We felt rushed, otherwise happy with our stay.

The reception staff were very nice and helpful going out of their way to find things to make our stay comfortable. As it's an old building there are quirks that are hard to overcome but the bed was comfortable and spacious. ||The room was adequate but needed rearranging as a hall stand type desk was placed at the foot of the bed meaning to get around the bed you had to shuffle around as the gap was probably less the 1 foot(30 cm). Not sure how good the cleaning was as there seemed to be a certain bit of dust there all our stay|The waiting staff needed teaching how to look after guests as when they cleared the tables at breakfast (only one or two actually took away empty plates whilst you had breakfast) they just went ahead regardless of guests and expected you to move out of their way.|Avoid the 3 course set meal there are lovely Turkish and Italian restaurants nearby (Efes Turkish grill house and Restorante Tirreno are great)|We had the unfortunate experience of dining there one night expecting it to be a treat it was certainly an experience the feed was adequate not really good service very poor we ordered a red wine which was delivered checked it was correct then dumped on the table. As it was a screw top I picked it up to open it and realised how cold it was. I got up with the bottle and went to the restaurant manager (who had been the one to dump it on the table). I said it's too cold to be told it was brought from the cellar so I rejected this she went to try and find a warmer one but to move avail so I asked what wine is not in the cellar ie what's kept in the bar. From this we found an adequate red wine although still slightly colder than ideal. The service! Charge is automatically added to the bill so I had it removed.

Fab location for theatre. For the price, rooms were nothing amazing. Comfortable but dated. Asked for a time for breakfast....asked for late as possible. Arrived slightly early....5 mins. Not much left on hot buffet, cleared away continental items when seated. Staff looked like they didn't want to be there.....bit disappointed.

Good location. Food on good side but self serve buffet breakfast bar rather cramped and not logically thought out - in fact that applied to the room we were in. Only a single accessible socket (and if you wanted to log on with a computer you were stuffed though fortunately we weren't requiring connectivity). Absolutely no where in the bathroom except a narrow glass shelf and the windowsill to place any wash kit etc and a single flimsy, one bar towel rail. General air of not a lot of in depth cleaning (and I'm no Mrs HInch) .|I'd looked forward to staying in this hotel but I can honestly say I won't be in a rush to come back. Shame. I think they trade too much on the Olympic dining room, which is spectacular, and not enough on the claim to be luxury.

Good hotel to stay in Alnwick within easy reach of tourist destinations. We took our dog and the room was good with treats and bowl for her. Breakfast was buffet style and had a good choice, although if you take your dog you have to use Hardy’s bistro which is understandable. We had a couple of meals on a night in Hardy’s both were enjoyable. If you cannot get a space in the hotel car park there are 2 large car parks free of charge for 24 hours at the rear of the hotel Finally all the staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay.

Yelp
This rating is for the Hardy's cafe located within the hotel. I enjoyed their afternoon tea served with champagne and chocolate strawberries. Everything was tasty- the sandwiches, sweets, and biscuits. The staff even allowed me to take photos of the famous Olympic dining lounge after my meal - stunning! If you have a chance to try dinner in this place, I'd do it!

Yelp
I recently stayed here while at a friend's wedding and I have to say I wasn't overly impressed. When we arrived we were told that check in was delayed so we didn't have enough time to get ready for the wedding and had to use a cramped staff room to change in (and subsequent arrivals didn't even get that). The staff weren't especially helpful, we had to phone for our own taxis, despite not knowing the area, and for the price paid, the bedroom was disappointingly old fashioned and poorly equipped (although the bathroom was very nice). At breakfast, the hotel ran out of orange juice, among other things, and what food was left stopped being served at 9.30 - a little early for some of the more hungover guests. There's limited choice in this little village for places to stay but my advice would be to find somewhere else!
