The RMS Olympic Dining Room – Alnwick, England - Gastro Obscura

"The RMS Olympic was one of two sister ships—along with the HMHS Britannic—to the ill-fated RMS Titanic. She was the first of the three to launch in 1910 and soon went into service in the First World War, remaining in service until 1935. The Olympic’s First Class Lounge was later removed and now serves as a restaurant yet again, this time in an Alnwick hotel. When she was auctioned off and made her final voyage up the Tyne River to Jarrow in 1936, she was stripped of her dining room. A local hotelier, Mr. Algenon Smart, successfully bid on the original oak wood paneling, stained glass windows, mirrors, and ceiling from the First Class Lounge, along with its revolving door and the Aft First Class Staircase. He installed these features, nearly identical to the Titanic’s dining room attributes (they were both designed and fitted by the same team of craftsmen at nearly the same time), in the White Swan Hotel where they’ve remained since. As you enter the hotel, you pass through the original revolving door used on the Olympic to keep sea breezes out of its restaurant. The lounge is in the Louis XV-style based on interiors at the famed Palace of Versailles. However, it has a more British twist, as it uses English oak finishes rather than gilding. This dining room is widely believed to be so similar to the Titanic’s that it has been used in films to represent the famous ship. In fact, when now-retired U.S. Navy officer Robert Ballard found fittings around the Titanic wreck, he used the lounge at the White Swan as a reference. You don’t have to be a guest at the White Swan Hotel to sit in the dining room for a meal which is a treat since the restaurant is the closest one can get to dining on board the Titanic. Know Before You Go Please call before visiting as it is often closed for private events." - rbenn250, vickipowelluk, mandydryden

What a fantastic hotel. The dining room had the ealls of tbe dining cabin from RMS Olympic, Titanic exact twin, othad tbe removing doors and the stairway too. This alone did not nske it fantastic. ||It was clean and tidy and our room was perfectly adequate. ||Tbe staff were exceptional, friendly? Welcoming, funny, witty and above all attentive. Neither did this make it a fantastic ave to stay.||The food was delicious, from an all you can eat breakfast buffet to carefully prepared and cooked evening meals. Again this did not make it fantastic.Nor did the well stocked var, the free parking or the offer of help with cases. ||What did make this fantastic? Well it was all of tbe above, a team effort with a we ru. Staff each doing tbeir job well and to perfection. Food, cleaning, banter, lovely environment on its own are good but together you get a fantastic hotel that ho the extra mile to make the customer experience first class.||We will be back.

The hotel was picked because of its central location and parking. |The bedrooms are a little tired and bathroom could do with a little extra attention to the grouting around the shower. We had one meal in the Olympic restaurant and was very poor quality for the price even though the ambiance was unique because of the history of this famous sister ship to the Titanic.|Staff were very helpful.|Breakfast was very good.|They also serve food in the Hardy Bar which I think is of better quality than the restaurant |There are plenty of local eateries in the town serving excellent food

Been wanting to stay here for so long and it was definitely worth the wait. Seeing the Olympic Suite for the first time took my breath away - absolutely spectacular! Seeing too the staircases and all the amazing photgraphs and artwork was amazing and if you have even just a passing interest in Titanic you will find it fascinating.||The hotel itself is lovely and immaculately clean. Our room was perfectly adequate and nicer than I thought it would be. We had very comfortable beds and everything we could possibly need. It was at the back of the hotel on the first floor - north facing so we had a view of Alnwick Castle from a large window that opened. Others were not so lucky, especially those on the ground floor whose windows could not be opened - I would have struggled with that as it was very warm, especially those with south facing rooms.||We had breakfast and 3 course dinners at the Olympic Restaurant included during our stay. The website is somewhat misleading in that the restaurant is most definitely NOT fine dining and i'm not sure why it is being advertised as such! It was good basic food. The menus changed each night. Some dishes were a bit odd - such as gammon steak with roast potatoes and gravy...?! Had some very nice meals though - duck, fish pie and beef stroganoff all stood out. One night the menu choices were pretty boring so we went out to eat instead. Breakfast was good. We didn't eat at Hardys Bar but the menu looked nice enough and is a gorgeous and modern room which is nice for drinks before/after dinner.||I have to mention the staff - they were ALL absolutely wonderful, probably the best I have encountered in a hotel anywhere. Genuinely warm and helpful, they were absolute stars! Thank you all very much.||Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will most definitely be returning!

Stayed in the Bamburgh Suite, loved the decor, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast in the Olympia dining room, was lovely. The history of the hotel makes it all the more special. We had a lovely stay; thank you 🤩

We stayed here at the beginning of June and it was lovely. The room we were given has a brilliant view of the Castle and it had a very comfy bed! The breakfasts were lovely and tasty and were served in the dining room, which is the most wonderful opulent room, you could almost feel what it must have been like on the Titanic (before the iceberg obvs!). There was free parking on a first come, first served basis, which was very handy and the staff were very friendly and attentive. We didn't have dinner in the dining room but wasn't that bothered, since we knew that we've be having breakfast in there, so opted to eat in the bar area. The menu was good, with a few veggie options, and the food tasted great. We'll definitely look to stay here again if we're in the area.

Had 1 night stay in the Alnwick Suite which was lovely, only downside there is no socket near the mirror for the hairdryer which was a challenge. Dined in the Olympic restaurant which was nice, good service and the staff were very knowledgeable on the dining room itself and the other areas that are salvaged from the ship. Close to all amenities, Barters bookshop, Castle, shopping area and lots quaint bars.

We visited for a mini break and really enjoyed our stay.|We arrived around 2.30pm and got the last space in the car park.|There is a public car park over the road from the hotel which operated by disc parking. I'm not sure how long you can park there for. We noticed shops were selling discs for £1 and with the disc you can park for free, but I suspect there might be a time limit.|The hotel is in a fantastic location in the centre of town. Downstairs is amazing.|There are staircases from the sister ship of the Titanic and the restaurant where you have your breakfast has panelling from that ship too. It's like stepping back in time.|Reception staff were friendly and helpful and we found all the staff we encountered to be friendly and welcoming.|The downstairs bar is modern and I loved the decor. Staff behind the bar were great, very chatty and helpful.|Breakfast was good. You booked your time with reception. The staff welcoming you into the restaurant were great.|They offered you a choice of tea or coffee and if you wanted toast they bought it to you. I thought this was a great idea. It stopped the queue for the toaster you have in most restaurants.|There was a choice of various juices, various cereals and croissants.|The hot breakfast was self service. There was good quality bacon and sausages, mushroooms, tomatoe ,beans and black pudding. There were fried eggs but they looked too watery for me. I like the yoke covered, but that is a personal choice.|I liked that the handles on the lids covering the food had a cover, so you didn't burn your hand when lifting them.|We saw someone being served scrambled egg, but we didn't know there was an option to order any hot food other than what was on the buffet.|Now to upstairs.|We were a long way from reception and there were various staircases, steps and corridors to walk along to get to our room. We're quite fit but anyone with mobility issues will struggle here. There's no body to help carry cases, so you need to be aware a level of fitness is needed here.|Our room had 2 single beds and was quite spacious. There was a wall mounted TV, kettle, plenty of tea and coffee and little pots of milk. Each day we had lovely biscuits left too. This was much appreciated.|There was plenty of wardrobe and shelf space too.|I've got a few little niggles about the room-|There were no pillow protectors on the pillows. I think these are essentials.|I didn't check if there was a mattress protector, purely because if there wasn't it would have made me feel uncomfortable.|When we arrived the towels were on our beds. Good towels but we had an issue with one and had to take it to reception. Don't know how staff missed what was on the towel.|The bathroom had seen better days but was functional.|The hot water to the sink was scalding hot, if you turned it a certain way. I think a sign could have been in the bathroom warning of this.|My main issue with the bathroom was that there was a small step down into it. A wooden slope had been added to this step down. The first time my friend walked into the bathroom she slid down the slope.|This made us very wary that we might slip while walking into the bathroom. |In other hotels with a step down they have the yellow hazard tape on the step, to make it obvious it's there.|These are the only slightly negative things about the hotel.|We had a lovely stay. Great staff in a character property.|I'd definitely recommend this hotel.

Our room absolutely stank of drains, on letting them know they said there wasn’t anything they could do until the morning so we had a very stinky evening. The bed was comfy, room was nice but still smelly. And there’s a jar of tea coffee etc which you have to tip out to get to the milk at the bottom which was annoying but there were free biscuits!! The barman was a bit full of himself but the food was nice. And the location by the gardens was lovely: vx

Yelp
This rating is for the Hardy's cafe located within the hotel. I enjoyed their afternoon tea served with champagne and chocolate strawberries. Everything was tasty- the sandwiches, sweets, and biscuits. The staff even allowed me to take photos of the famous Olympic dining lounge after my meal - stunning! If you have a chance to try dinner in this place, I'd do it!

Yelp
I recently stayed here while at a friend's wedding and I have to say I wasn't overly impressed. When we arrived we were told that check in was delayed so we didn't have enough time to get ready for the wedding and had to use a cramped staff room to change in (and subsequent arrivals didn't even get that). The staff weren't especially helpful, we had to phone for our own taxis, despite not knowing the area, and for the price paid, the bedroom was disappointingly old fashioned and poorly equipped (although the bathroom was very nice). At breakfast, the hotel ran out of orange juice, among other things, and what food was left stopped being served at 9.30 - a little early for some of the more hungover guests. There's limited choice in this little village for places to stay but my advice would be to find somewhere else!
