The White Tower reviewed by Ati Gereb Tourism Guide @ East WOWs West Travel & Photography Adventures – Brașov, Transylvania & Vancouver, Canada
Rising above the historic center of Brașov, the White Tower is one of the most iconic defensive landmarks of the medieval Saxon city, offering both historical insight and some of the finest panoramic views over the old town.
EN: White Tower; RO: Turnul Alb; HU: Fehér torony; DE: Weißer Turm
Constructed in the mid-15th century, the White Tower was built outside the main line of city walls, on a strategic hill overlooking the north-western approaches to Brașov. Unlike the rectangular guild towers along the walls, the White Tower has a semi-cylindrical shape, open toward the city, a defensive design meant to resist artillery fire while allowing rapid communication and retreat toward the fortified core.
Role within the medieval fortifications:
The White Tower formed part of Brașov’s outer defense system, working together with the nearby Black Tower and the curtain walls below. Its elevated position allowed defenders to control access routes, monitor enemy movement, and provide flanking fire toward attackers attempting to breach the walls.
Brașov’s medieval fortifications extended over more than 3 kilometers, incorporating 28–30 towers and bastions, each traditionally assigned to a craft guild for maintenance and defense. The walls reached up to 2 meters in thickness, while towers could rise 15–20 meters, reflecting continuous upgrades between the 14th and 17th centuries as warfare evolved from arrows to firearms and artillery.
Architecture and materials:
The White Tower was built primarily of stone and lime mortar, its pale exterior giving rise to its modern name. Inside, multiple wooden fighting platforms once allowed defenders to operate firearms and observe the terrain. The tower’s position on natural rock further increased its defensive strength and visibility.
Access and visiting today:
Today, the White Tower is one of Brașov’s most rewarding viewpoints. Visitors can reach it by climbing the famous 200-step staircase starting from Graft Creek (Graft / Graftbach), the historic water channel separating the old town from the medieval fortifications.
Alternatively, the tower can be accessed via forest paths, which are illuminated at night, making the walk safe and atmospheric even after sunset.
Restoration and modern use:
The White Tower has undergone several restoration campaigns and now functions as a heritage and viewpoint site, occasionally hosting exhibitions. From the top, visitors enjoy sweeping views over the Council Square, the Black Church, the old merchant houses, and the surrounding Carpathian foothills.
Interesting historical detail:
Unlike most guild towers, the White Tower was directly controlled by the city authorities, underlining its importance as a key observation and artillery point rather than a craft-specific defense post.
Today, the White Tower remains a powerful symbol of Brașov’s military ingenuity, where medieval strategy meets one of the city’s most memorable scenic experiences.
