On the Grid : The Winchester

"We love The Winchester for any occasion, plain and simple. Its airy Scandanavian aesthetic makes it a no-brainer for mid-week coffee meetings and its stellar kitchen puts their own seasonal stamp on breakfast, lunch and dinner. And don’t even get us started on weekend brunch. Their simple bar is neatly stocked for subtly complex cocktails (such as the Skippin’ Town: mezcal, Cocchi Americano, lemon, pineapple syrup, Ancho Reyes) – but no one will raise an eyebrow if you opt for rosé instead. We’ve even been known to pop in simply for one of their Leige waffles. Given a yeasty overnight rise and dusting of pearlized sugar, they’re more cookie than waffle – and as craveable as The Winchester itself." - Potluck Creative

Amazing brunch and service! This place is great for get togethers and parties.

Google
Cool little venue!! We went for a concert and found the stage in the back. Kind of felt like a secret venue. Sound was great, but I just wish the stage was a little higher. If you are not on the rail it could be difficult to see. I am 6' 4" and was having trouble. With that said we will be back again!

Google
We attended Sassy Sascha's Disco Brunch and had a great time! It's a very nice music and entertainment venue.

The atmosphere of this joint scratches an itch that is really hard to reach these days. The local scene, the inclusive and alternative atmosphere, the fun and eclectic band choices... Stickers on the wall and REALLY good hamburger. Visit here! It feels like im immediately part of the crowd on my first trip.

What a little jewel Lakewood has. This music venue has a full bar which is great. Their front room (which also has a full bar) does serve food although the menu is limited. The menu online is very old as of this review (9/25/24). Do not rely on that menu. As far as the music venue itself is concerned, I would say it is intimate. The stage is huge. There are several tables with stools. The sound system was more than adequate for the space. I did think the vocals could have been a touch more pronounced. I was there when both Marcus Smith (solo) and songstress jo & the familiar opened for the headliner M.O.O.K.Y. All the acts were fantastic. I thought songstress jo & the familiar with their song FYK stood out as the crowd was really into helping songstress jo with some of the lyrics. It was fantastic. If you haven't seen any of these acts, you really need to. I've seen songstress jo & the familiar many times, and they always rock. You need to see them. I've seen them in Detroit several times and even saw them down in Nashville during CMA Fest. I plan to get back to The Winchester Music Tavern as soon as I can. It is an excellent venue. You need to go.

Google
This is one of my favorite Lakewood bars ! The staff is cool and the menu is great. They have a great trivia night, plus other events, like themed Bingo on Wednesdays. They have a lot of vegan options and even more food for the omnivores. If you're going to see a show in their awesome music venue, do yourself a favor and go early to grab dinner.

Google
It's a fun place to hang out. This last time I was there was a little crazy being New Year's. There was one giant Duche Bag that was annoying to deal with, but the staff, bartenders, and security were all Awesome. I would definitely go back. Seeing bands there is pretty Sweet too. Low stage, up close to everything.

Google
The Winchester Music Tavern is a great place to listen to local and touring bands located in the beautiful city of Lakewood. Great food too! Highly recommend the Mac’n Cheese and Cauliflower wings.

Yelp
Used to love coming here but as of late it seems that the bar staff have a continual problem with just being nice. The fake smiles and apathetic attitude towards the patrons is a definite indicator that it's time to move on... Loved being there but it's time to break up.

Yelp
The events hosted at this establishment are great....But the food absolutely sucks. I keep going back and keep getting disappointed. Recently we got served prefrozen Costco like breakfast on paper plates and given plastic cutlery that couldn't even cut through my slimy chicken at the cost of $15 a meal. Don't give me bad premade diner food at the cost of a decent steak. The biscuits on my "waffle batter sandwich" were so soggy from the obnoxious amount of grease, and I could taste the freeze burn in the potatoes. Also my makers and coke was $10 (the highest prices I know of in Lakewood). Absolute gouging prices. If you're going to a show or bingo.. my advice is to save your money and eat before hand.

Yelp
What a cute little vibe. I need to go back. A friend invited me to a dj night which was amazing

Yelp
The salads are huge and full of yummy goodness. I love plant bingo and the salads are always a nice treat during bingo

Yelp
We initially went to the Winchester for a Goth Brunch, but ended up sitting in the front bar area. They were having the Goth Brunch in the back of the building where they have concerts. I have driven by the Winchester many times and have wanted to go in. They have a vegan night every Monday which is appealing. The bar was very nice with just enough seating. We sat ourselves and were given menus right away. The staff was very nice and helpful. I ordered the tofu scramble, which was good. The tofu itself was a little on the salty side for me and the potatoes were dry. I still enjoyed the meal. I ordered the Moist Pickles. They are named after one of owners whose name is DJ Moist. They were spicy and good. I will be going back for vegan night.

Yelp
This place was cute. Spent most of our time outside with friends so always a good time. The bartenders were sweet and would always help us and serve us well. We did not get food so don't want to speak on it. But overall love this little place. They have a concert venue in the back so I would like to experience that next time.

Yelp
This is a bar that has a lot of fun events and have a decent utilization of the space they have available. My only complaint really is the food which has more bark than its bite.

Yelp
Fantastic music venue in Lakewood. This place is in my top 5 places to see a show in Cleveland. The bands that play here are always great. Drink prices are great too! Haven't tried the food, so I can't comment on that. Service is always good here. If you are a fan of live music and entertainment, this place is a must visit!

Yelp
Y'all, I love this place! I've been here for Drag Shows, Plant Bingo, Vinyl Sales, and just for dinner and drinks and I've had such a splendid time on each visit! The Winchester is located in a prime area of Lakewood with plenty of stereo parking within a block. The front half of the building is a bar and restaurant and the back is the venue, where you can also order drinks and food. The venue space is decent sized and the stage is huge, which was great for drag. I always find that The Winchester is always pretty organized, even on days when they are understaff, they make it work and make sure everyone gets taken care of. It's such a fun spot! There's honestly nothing special about the way that it's decorated and the bathroom situation isn't great but overall the vibes are good and they host a bunch of great events. Love this place!

Yelp
The brunch I had was great. Tried the Biscuits and Gravy based on a recommendation from the bartender and it was absolutely delicious! Would go back again. The service was great as well. Good hidden brunch spot.

Yelp
Very cool dive bar/tavern located on Madison in Eastern Lakewood. With Cleveland Burger Week having some vegetarian options I figured to give them a try. The Winchester menu is vegetarian/vegan friendly and was by far the best and best designed burger version offered. While very hip and happening, the Winchester is still welcoming to all, I sat at the bar and was treated well; also noticed that families were there eating. Nothing too overdone with the decor, although there is a stuffed racoon over the bar. Took a bit for the burger to come out, although well worth the wait. An impossible burger, topped with housemade vegan sausage, tomato sauce on a garlic bun; a real flavor bomb with great textures. Rather then coming up with the easiest vegetarian burger alternative, the Winchester put some real thought and attention to detail into their option. A cool and relaxed option in Lakewood for vegan/vegetarian food. Looks like a great place to see some smaller concerts or just hang out.

Yelp
Came here as our Stop #2 during CLE Burger Week, but did it as takeout so we could enjoy some other side dishes we had already cooked at home. I ordered two burger and a side of their fries. When our Birdtown burgers (pretzel bun, cheese curds, bacon jam, sun dried tomato aioli, pickled red onions, house pickles) arrived home, they were dry and had too many sweet tastes that overpowered the savory aspects...especially the pretzel bun. Both my wife and I prefer the savory flavor profiles, so for us this burger combo just did not hit the spot, and certainly doing the meal takeout style made for a less-than-fresh burger experience (which is on us). The rosemary garlic fries were quite good, especially with the aioli dipping sauce. They stayed hot all the way home and we had leftovers to enjoy over the weekend. Will have to give these folks another try, but this time at an outside table, in person.

Yelp
If you are vegan or gluten-free, this place is for you, friends! I first stumbled upon The Winchester last year during Cleveland Burger Week and was impressed with their submission, but I never made it back around until almost a year later. Although technically a music venue and bar, this little hole in the wall has a great food selection that specializes in brunch and dinner items. The dining area isn't large and they don't do table service, so you need to walk up to the bar to order. The service could be better - the bar tender barely acknowledged us when we came in and waited about 5 minutes before she explained the ordering situation - but the food made up for what the service lacked. The menu is loaded with vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options. Something to satisfy every taste and diet, really. My husband and I both ordered the Winchester burger and upgraded to the rosemary fries. The only complaint I have is that for all the GF options they have, they don't carry GF buns or bread, so I had to just eat mine without. The burger is actually a double burger with sharp cheddar, crispy bacon, herbed Mayo, micro greens, and tomato. It was outstanding. The fries came out in a heaping pile with apple cider aioli, balsamic glaze, green onions and garlic and Rosemary. All of this for only $14. The bartender didn't check on us much and I had to run to the kitchen window and ask for Mayo since the cook forgot it because I didn't get a bun, so I'm not rating the service high on the charts here, but the food was worth coming back for sure. I'm excited to try other items on the menu and maybe even catching a show one night. I also see that they offer a fish fry during lent but our server couldn't give me any details about the type of fish or what comes with it. If you're in the area, I'd definitely check this place out. Great food, reasonable prices and a menu that suits everyone's needs.

Yelp
Did you know that Mondays are vegan here? Enter Mom of 2 vegetarians who is thrilled to find places to have our "Mom-and baby Dates"! I've been here in the past to see bands- so I was delighted to hear that the Winchester can also be a happy place to dine. This evening was rather snowy, and parking was a bit stressful due to the massive snow piles the plows left behind. Today it was 3 of us. Daughter G and her pal H. G was pretty psyched to try the bean burrito- which is what I had- and G opted for an impossible burger instead (my butterfly changes her mind a lot). G's friend H opted for the grilled cheese- as she is seeking the best grilled cheese she can find. This one did not disappoint either. Service was great, it wasn't packed though, and that always makes me a little sad. This is why I support businesses offering alternative menus like Vegan Nights at the Winchester.

Yelp
I had such a great time here. I went for dinner and Sunday night game but stayed for energy. It was reggae night and was stunned by the music and amount of people dancing and having a good time, it reminded me of dancehall/soca bars in NYC. The bar was in a seedy area which immediately turned me off but the Midwestern charm of the staff and people inside made me stay. I had the Pulled Pork Sandwich which was on night menu and a handful of drinks. The food wasn't so memorable but I had a great time

Yelp
I had no idea this place existed until earlier this year when a friend and I wandered in after abandoning plans to go to a spot down the road. It turned out to be trivia night that just started so we opted to join in on the fun and ended up wining! (All thanks to my friend who is legit into trivia and takes it very seriously, I on the other hand browsed Facebook and Tinder the whole time). The atmosphere this night was pretty chill and the bar/restaurant was not crowded or loud. Thursday is also taco night. My friend and I shared tacos $3 each (pork was better than chicken), homemade pierogies $10, and 6 jumbo garlic parm wings (note they come breaded then covered in sauce) $9. Side of ranch 25¢ was tasty. One downside would be our encountering of a ginger bearded troll. A poor sport who in his sad twisted existence thought it would be funny to heckle my friend and I. All I can guess is that he really wanted the 4 pack of this weird Kiss themed diet cola and the sized too small for him Winchester brunch t-shirt that we won? The trivia host actually apologized to us for the behavior from this tool. I decided to give The Winchester another try when I found out they were participating in Cleveland Burger Week. Straight up, I like the food here. Their Birdtown burger was good and is rivaling Hodge's for second place. The pickled onions were a nice touch, I liked that they cooked the meat to my preference, just could have used a little more of that sun-dried tomato ailoi (I'm a person who likes things saucy and for flavors to really stand out). We shared the garlic rosemary fries and the buffalo cauliflower - both were great. I will say this place does not have a good A/C system and things were hot and humid inside especially with it being packed with everyone wanting to check out CLE Burger Week. Get here early!

Yelp
Garbage service, extremely subpar food, and the ambiance is nothing to concern yourself over. I would bother with almost any other similar place before this one, as it's very far from being worth visiting.

Yelp
This place isn't for us ALL!! We were sitting there waiting on our food for 45 min watching golf tournament as we waited for food enjoying tv.. a group of people they sat down I guess they told them they wanted to watch something else so guess what? they changed the channel.. wow like we haven't been watching it. So I asked her why did they do it? She responded I didn't think y'all were watching it. So did you ask? So I asked the manager why. He stated our policy is all live games so if they would've ask you would've changed it? Yes I would have but it's 2 quarter and we had been watching live golf. So I guess the over 45 min didn't count? It was a college game not even Ohio . Never again!!!

Yelp
So happy I chose to eat here. I picked up a burger and fries from this bar! It's funny how bar food is sometimes equally as good as a fork and knife sit down place. The Winchester burger and their fresh fries were delicious! The burger is cooked to your liking. I chose medium and was pleased to see a bit of pink as it was cooked to perfection. The toppings they use for the burger are interesting. It appeared to be a soft cheddar cheese, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and a mayonnaise sauce. The only criticism would be that the sauce was a bit heavy so I'd suggest asking for it on the side. However, the rest of the toppings were super fresh! I loved the fries. They were seasoned with pepper and salt. For a little over $10 this large meal could be split between two people.

Yelp
First timer! I was pleasantly surprised with the food! I ordered the biscuits and gravy and they came out great. Gravy was packed with flavor and the biscuits were nice and fluffy. My only complaint was the eggs were overcooked. I ordered them over easy and they can out with a hard yoke. Not the end of the world but wish they came out over easy!

Yelp
OMG OMG!!!!!! This was my very first Drag Queen show and IM HOOKED!!!!!! I freaking loved every second of it. The show was freaking fantastic they were so freaking awesome, can't u tell I'm still excited about it?? Anyway my raffle ticket came up and I won to go against another female at karaoke. Well she chose this song I didn't know, and I was pretty upset about it because I didn't know the song but the hostess saw that I was upset and said no you could have the song you want to sing. So let me tell you this guy loved it they come up to you while you're singing and give you tips I was elated by the whole thing it was such a fantastic experience I love you like I said every second and I am hooked and I will be back. If you guys get a chance to see the show do not I repeat do not miss it.

Yelp
This is becoming one of my favorite places in the 216. I can not think of one thing I do not like about this place. Drinks are reasonable, barkeeps are amazing, food is fantastic(fresh chicharrón) and fantastic bands. Yup love it.

Yelp
Came here for Cleveland Burger Week & was so impressed!! The sweet pretzel bun with the savory burger was incredible not to mention it was topped with cheese curds, pickled onions & sun dried tomato aioli talk about a flavorful burger. The fries may have been the star of the show though, they were more expensive than the burger at $6.50 but the portion is plenty to share with a few people. They are so crispy and flavorful with the rosemary herb topping some of the best french fries I've ever had!!! There was plenty of seating outside and inside, you order at the bar and they bring it out to you. They had a ton of drink options as well. The food came out super fast. I want to come back and try their normal menu!
google avatar

Yelp
Went here during burger week. Everything we had was delicious and we got some wings to go along with the burgers. We were there during brunch hours where there was a bloody mary bar. The menu had a lot of variety and nothing was too expensive. I really want to come back and try the jackfruit or impossible burger. I will say that i felt like i was in the salty spittoon when I should've been at weenie hut juniors but everyone was really nice and i will be back to try some more food. Wow just wow you will be surprised

Yelp
Great Food and Venue !! I've actually been to eat here 3-4 times - have yet to catch a show - but I live right up the street - so I've heard a few More than just a bar - great kitchen and staff !!

Yelp
The Drag Brunch was fantastic. Highly recommend it. $10 at the door. $10 brunch. $15 bottle of champagne.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't know what happen to this place but the tables are sticky and the food menu is now bleak and non existent. It's a shame how the mighty have fallen
google avatar

Yelp
Go for brunch. Idk who decided music taverns could and should do brunch, but the food is incredible. The vibes are good and everyone is so friendly.
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
Stopped in here for the 2nd time with a friend that enjoys vegan Monday. I'm not vegan, but ordered off the vegan menu and everything was delicious. Last time I got the burger and fries it was awesome. Food is great, Staff are friendly and drinks are cold. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Popped in for Sunday brunch on a lark when the kids were otherwise occupied. Dive bar vibe but with nice tables, a Bloody Mary bar that's absolutely adequate, and a surprisingly good menu where the food did not disappoint. Someone managing the kitchen is taking their job seriously. Quick service. Not fancy--lots of Browns pregaming folks--but not unfriendly or unwelcoming. Plus, there was a drag show setting up in the event space and a Hamilton sing along scheduled for the evening. Chicken and waffles were notably good. Crispy waffle, sriracha butter, real syrup, deliciously seasoned and perfectly fried chicken. The wife loved the biscuits and gravy. Large portions AND good. Prices were reasonable--not hipster high--especially for the quality and quantity. Definitely great at being what it is.
google avatar

Alicia B.

Yelp
What do I need to say besides $15 bottomless mimosas at brunch?!? But really. The brunch menu is DELICIOUS and affordable. The yacht rock music make for a fun Saturday! $5 Bloody Mary bar. Great music. Bottomless mimosas. All a win.
google avatar

Kyle A.

Yelp
Great food. The presentation of this item sums up how this tastes. Biscuits and Gravy meal comes with breakfast potatos, two-eggs cooked to order, one-open faced biscuit covered with sausage gravy. Optional chicken, for an up-charge, perfectly fried. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Patty M.

Yelp
If you're on the Atkins Diet, leave your carb counters at home. Not only did I just tear through a pile of $0.60 wings (the Wednesday night special) smothered in Gorilla BBQ sauce, but I just asked for a slice of bread to sop up and consume the last of the sauce. And WOW is my rum and coke strong. And ever Wednesday night, there's a $5 comedy show. But do get the wings!
google avatar

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
OMG the best place ever. Food was absolutely amazing. Erica, Dom, and Shane were truly welcoming and informative. Burger week brought us in and will bring us back. The food was better than bar food. The brussel sprouts were tantalizing and the Rosemary garlic fries were so delicious. The burger was fantastic. It blows my mind that it is just a little bar. Its definitely more than that. You all need to try this place.
google avatar

Jennifer P.

Yelp
Came here during burger week for an early dinner. I'm usually not a fan of pretzel buns because they are usually too hard and too salty. However, the pretzel bun here was like a soft pretzel. I was excited to try this burger because it has cheese curds in it, but it wasn't very prominent. Couldn't really taste or find the cheese curds. Nonetheless the burger was pretty good and was juicy and flavorful.
google avatar

Bailey F.

Yelp
Came here for Cleveland burger week and let me tell you... this burger was AMAZING. Cooked perfectly with pickled onions, cheese curds and house pickles. Will definitely be back to try more of their regular menu. I also got a side of the garlic fries which were also phenomenal! They have a nice little outside patio to enjoy the weather while socially distancing.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
I got the Winchester burger. Very good. I loved their fries. Small menu but based on what I had I look forward to trying more. Tons of different craft beers. Nice environment, will Definitely be back.

Yelp
It was cool. The bartender was cool, made good drinks. Not really my scene, was hoping for more diversity in people and music but I'd go back I guess.

Yelp
Gosh I just love this place. I've been here for brunch twice now (2019 resolution: go more!) and the food and drinks don't disappoint. Although I've had the bottomless mimosas ($15), this time I opted for the build-your-own Bloody Mary bar. WOW. They have at least 5 different mixers, a CHEST FULL of hot sauces, Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, and the best display of pickled veggies, olives, cheese and meats ever. I stacked my skewer so full of the goods that our waiter had to take a picture of it. I wish that I had taken a pic of it but I was so excited that I chomped down immediately. One note: they no longer have the bottomless mimosas, BUT for the $15 you still get an entire bottle of champagne and endless OJ so it's still a great deal IMO.
google avatar

Nicole Z.

Yelp
Have been wanting to try their brunch and finally did. SO delicious. I had the burger with bacon and devoured the whole thing. It was so good. Came with French fries which were delicious too. My boyfriend ordered the chicken and waffles and that was killer too. This place had a cool vibe- can't wait to come back and check out a band.
google avatar

Belle A.

Yelp
It's a Sunday and of course I'm gonna have some Bottomless mimosas! I'm 5 drinks In and I just received my food! I ordered Chicken and Waffles . I love fried chicken, so I had to..duh. Anyways lol I'm honestly tipsy and stoned right now and I'm gonna enjoy the shit out of this. Ok so I finished the chicken and waffles and it was delicious and I loved the fried chicken! It was extra crispy just how I like it! My friend and I decided we were still hungry after 7 mimosas so we both ordered "The Winchester American Breakfast " let's see how this goes. I ordered extra bacon and scrambled eggs with mine. Enxhru ordered over medium with bacon. Wow can't believe my fat ass ate a second meal. It was delicious
google avatar

Amelia M.

Yelp
I was curious to see what the food is like since I think they just recently started serving food. It had been more than 10yrs since I had last been at the Winchester. The food was awful stale bread and no seasoning. The cocktail was a joke for a drink that was $8 half of it was club soda. And the place has not been updated at all, still smells like mold. Maybe it will be good the next 10yrs.
google avatar

Anya D.

Yelp
This place is so Lakewood. Perfect light Appetizers & amazing drink selection from local breweries and cocktails are good! Small bar space and comfy. Street Parking! Can't wait to come back. They also host many cool events and comedy shows
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
BBQ jackfruit with fries, Garlic aioli fries, Fried buffalo cauliflower, fried Brussels sprouts, and the power house salad all delicious. I was disappointed, The last three times we ordered fried cauliflower, from different restaurants. Everything was yummy
google avatar

Jack G.

Yelp
Every time I've hung out at The Winchester, I always have a great time. The wings are so good, the burgers are big and juicy and the staff is super friendly. Musical acts, trivia nights and events make this a happening place.
google avatar

Cassandra W.

Yelp
Went for brunch! Had a great time! They had seating on the patio which helped. Otherwise inside was pretty empty! Has some great breakfast choices. Went with my go to eggs Benedict! Not to mention the bottomless mimosas, which is basically a bottle of champagne for 15$!! Great little brunch spot
google avatar

Hele C.

Yelp
Just enjoyed a delicious breakfast burrito for Saturday brunch. We also ordered the vegan impossible burger and it was excellent. The build your own Bloody Mary bar is fun! You can really load up and make it just how you like. Friendly and attentive bartenders, this tavern has a great local feel. There is also huge music venue in the back! Looks so fun. I definitely want to check out a show next time.
google avatar

Victor D.

Yelp
Although the service was a bit slow it made since because it was very busy. Besides that the atmosphere was fun and energetic especially since they had an artist, Sean Keating, performing live! The food itself was also very good with the burger I ordered being nice and juicy, as well as being very filling! I would definitely come back here again!

Yelp
A hidden gem in the Birdtown section of Lakewood, The Winchester Music Tavern featuring live bands and a 100 inch screen for sporting events is an awesome venue serving fantastic from scratch food and great signiture cocktails as well as a great selection of beers and booze all at attractive low prices. This place is a real winner!
