The Yak Lake House

This was the most expensive room we had during our Mexico trip, and wasn't really worth the money in our opinion. Our room was ok but very small, the bathroom tap sprayed water out all over the bathroom, everywhere except the sink so it made it near impossible to actually use. There was often a strong sewage smell in our room and the doors are made of glass so it's too light in the rooms to get a decent night's sleep! The dorms seem good and the location is great, but if you're getting a private room there must be other places in Bacalar that are better to stay in.

Had a great experience, arrived on Wednesday and that’s the night they have their weekly party. It was awesome, loud until 2 am that night but the other nights it was quiet around 11 pm. Santiago at the front desk was so awesome, helped us out the entire trip. We were celebrating our honeymoon, and he made sure to arrange a breakfast to make it special for us. Gave us a lot of recommendations for restaurants nearby. We stayed in a private room, and it was really good quality. Food is really great there, prices are little on the more expensive side for the area. No parking there, but again Santiago helped us park on a nearby street and the car had no issues for the 2 nights we stayed.

Fantastic place to stay. The location is unique by the lagoon, the beds, bathroom and the whole place are very clean and comfortable. You can rest on the pier and go for a swim. I enjoyed the music and there are many activities to be experienced. The staff is first-class. Carla was the one who greeted me mainly and she was super helpful, friendly and kind. Highly recommend. Will come back.

I had dinner here two nights and stopped in for drinks a couple of times The food is good. The location is great. Their deck is directly on the lake. They always have a good playlist playing. (Pedro) Omar was my waiter everytime. He is a great waiter and also a nice guy.

Fun place to meet new people, great spot to chill, party, take tours off their dock. Food and drink is great. Staff were amazing! Learned how to salsa dance. I only visited, didn’t want to sleep in a bunk. You are allowed to walk in and chill!!!

Travelling is always a bit hectic and nerve wracking, I just hope to have an experience as incredible as I did at Yak Hostel every place I go. Not only is Alfredo an amazing host but the entire staff and volunteer team are super friendly and inviting. The location is great and the activities offered are really fun. All around a great vibe. The Wednesday night party had a lot of potential but they should have played reggaeton instead of electro. Aside from this and the fact that drinks are a bit on the expensive side, this stay was truly fantastic and I recommend it to everyone. Ps you should 100% do the sunrise paddle boarding

Didn’t stay here but came for their Wednesday night party. 150peso entry with a free beer. It was techno night which was a bit of a shame as don’t think there was a single techno fan there. Got busy at around 11 and went on until 2am, then continued next door til the morning. Great vibes, great mix of people. Drinks fairly expensive but nice. Defo recommend for a night out in bacalar!

My home for two months and the start of an epic 1.5-year journey through Latin America. The highlight of this hostel was definitely the volunteer crew I met in late 2022/early 2023. They made the stay memorable. Unfortunately, looking back, the hostel itself wasn't worth the price tag in 2022/2023, but I don't know about today since they probably improved a lot of things. The dorms were spacious, but perhaps a bit pricey for the level of comfort and charm. The food and drinks were decent, but maybe a tad overpriced. However, if you're looking to party hard on Wednesdays, Yak is the place to be! So that definitely deserves a shout-out. But for those seeking a quieter vibe and better value for money, there might be more suitable options out there. Just my two cents after my two-month stay
