The Yak Lake House

I’m not sure where to start. This was some of the rudest service I’ve ever experienced. We asked for prices and were told one amount, but when it came time to pay, we were charged a completely different price. That alone was very frustrating. When we tried to rent a kayak and asked where to book it, one staff member told us to wait, even though they were not helping anyone else. The tone was dismissive and rude, and we were made to feel unwelcome. Sometimes you can just tell when a place doesn’t want you there. Because of this experience, we packed our bags and left. This may be a wake-up call for the owners to invest more in staff training and fair pay so guests are treated properly.

Lovely place! We stayed here and enjoyed the lake, the activities and the people. It is not cheap, however worth the price if you want to wake up and jump in the lake immediately! The restaurant/bar was really good and affordable. We were served by Jasmin both days and she was very friendly! Gracias!

This hostel is located in the most ideal spot, the wharf and access to the lagoon is amazing. We spent most of our time in the lagoon here. If you are coming for the party on Wednesday be warned - it is open to others and really isn’t catered to people in the hostel. If this is your reason for staying here then I would recommend staying elsewhere and just come for the night (or day passes during the day which most our friends we met along the way did). Drinks were expensive and the DJ did not have an understanding of the crowd, for the most part the music isn’t catered to the hostel but rather to others who join (the dance floor was dead and the DJ would not change the music to suit). It seems other hostels in the area know how to cater to crowds within the hostel better. Overall still a great experience but the Wednesday party and access to the lagoon (as you can get day passes like our friends did) shouldn’t be the deciding factor.

The best place to spend the afternoon by the lagoon! The Yak is amazing, it has a super chill and fun atmosphere. The access is open to the public with just a minimum consumption (a beer for about $50 MXN), which is totally fair and affordable. The staff is super lovely, always helpful, and full of good vibes. Afternoons at The Yak are truly special, with great activities and a perfect environment to meet people or simply relax. I always choose it and highly recommend it. My dear Yak family thank you for everything. Best hostel in Bacalar and one of my best in general ! So much love from the staff. They are here for you. Recommendations, smiles, tons of activities and a lot of pure love. You have a direct swimming point in the dock of the hostel. Also thank for Adventure Lab for amazing tours and vibes ! We’d had a couple of really bad accommodation experiences in the lead up to coming here and thought we’d pay a little extra and stay here. It’s just got it right - sociable enough with enough going on but not overwhelming. Nice music playing in the bar area but not to the point it’s disturbing or annoying. The setting is so calming and was just what we needed after those bad experiences. I’d stay here again in a heartbeat!

This place is absolutely amazing. The BEST hostel I have ever stayed in and I have been in hundreds over the years. All the staff are superb. Dario at the bar is one of many excellent members of the team. I will definitely be coming back here.

Amazing stay at the hostel! The vibe is absolutely great — you feel welcome as soon as you arrive. Huge shoutout to the super friendly and helpful staff, especially ALI at the front desk who was incredibly kind during our whole stay. The rooms are super clean and comfortable. One of the best parts: direct access to the Bacalar lagoon — such a treat and the perfect way to start or end the day! Only small downside: the AC in the rooms could be stronger, but we were given extra blankets so it wasn’t a problem at all. And don’t miss the avocado toasts — they’re delicious! Highly recommend this place
