The Yan is quite a unique place. The owners have renovated farm buildings into 7 rooms and a number of cottages. I had expected open space but all the lodging is tightly clustered together on a drive and the grassy areas are off limits to guests (and dogs). My room was perfectly nice in a modern rather spartan style and I had a nice cozy table at the bistro for breakfast and dinner (the staff were all very attentive). The menu is quite odd, an eclectic mix of international dishes, most with a stewy consistency. I didn't really understand what people where raving about other than the shared roast boards on Sunday. The lounge area is also modern and isn't particularly welcoming on cold days as it lacks a fireplace and is overlit. |Grasmere is an easy walk on a nice lane and the Yan has good access to a number of hikes. Overall, it's probably best to stay in the cottages where you could at least buy food to have for lunch (lunch is only available on Sunday). I had to eat the tea gingerbread for lunch on two days because it was down-pouring rain. Also, I was solo but got charged in the package for two people eating dinner and breakfast each day which didn't really seem fair.

This is the 7th time we have been to The Yan. Originally, we stayed in a hotel room but more recently we have used their self catering properties, which are clean, comfortable and extremely well equipped. We love The Smithy with its small garden but the others are great as well. After walking the Fells, there is nothing better than eating in their excellent bistro (just a few metres away). What Dave and Sally have set up here is truly remarkable and the rest of the team are always friendly and helpful. They were particularly kind to us on the occasion of my daughter's 40th birthday. Can't thank them enough and we will definitely make an 8th visit soon.

Our festive treat to ourselves was an absolute winner. We doubled the length of our stay here from last year to 6 nights and were wonderfully looked after at The Yan throughout. The rain this time relented and we were treated to some amazing walks in the Cumbrian fells returning late afternoon each day to this wonderful and fully modernised farm location at Broadrayne on the edge of Grasmere. Our hosts are fabulous and all worked with dedication and purpose but left us alone to enjoy our stay, nestled discretely among the Cumbrian Mountains. Breakfast, served in the wonderfully busy bistro supercharged our Lakeland walks. Returning to the Yan each day as the weather closed in on us and amid the gathering gloom was a joyous and uplifting experience as soon as the random buildings and whitewashed stonework honed into view. Back for tea and cake sat on our large sofa in a warm and cosy room to reflect upon our walking exertion and prepare for a beautifully crafted evening menu and a minimum of 3 courses. The Christmas dinner was amazing, and had everything, with a few twists on the traditional menu to keep everyone on their toes. We are relative newcomers to vacations in the Lakes, but any concerns we had ahead of our trip, the traffic, the parking, the visitor numbers …were more than allayed by our fabulous hosts. Our room, appropriately named Fairfield afforded wonderful views of the abundant mountainside and came fully equipped with several key features the chilled water in cooling flask and quality tea and coffee from Taylor’s of Harrogate and OS map of the location with compass and wallet to name just a few. Our trip was recommended to us in The Times Travel section, which has served us well in the past and did not fall short in any way. We had a swell time and can’t wait until the Spring when we will make our return visit.

Our fifth visit to the Yan either staying and eating or just eating at the Bistro. Our expectation for our Christmas visit were high and I think they were exceeded. We stayed in one of the rooms in the main building, which are fitted to a high standard and are spot-on. The little touches like the welcome mince pies in the room and the egg nog or mulled wine and Christmas cake on arrival in the bistro were lovely. The food was wall-to-wall great. I particularly loved the Christmas Croissant bread and butter pud on Boxing Day and I'm not really a dessert person. Christmas dinner was delicious. My only quibble with the wonderful food is that the Yan need to arrange for more daylight hours at Christmas so that we can burn off more calories walking up fells before feeding.

Have ate in the restaurant on two previous occasions and the food had been incredible both times so was really looking forward to returning. We ordered the yan-naan to start which was average and the Jamaic-yan and oni-yan soup for mains and they were both two of the worst dishes ever tasted. The onion soup was watery with sloppy onions and no flavour and a soggy piece of bread on top and the meat was overcooked and burnt and the fish curry had absolutely no flavour at all and again was really disappointing. This experience will probably put us off from coming again. There was a table behind us who we overheard were also really unhappy with their food. An expensive meal to not dislike.
