On the Grid : The Zen Succulent

"When we last stepped into this greenery filled shop, the Zen Succulent, Marvin Gaye’s Ain’t No Mountain High Enough was playing and we were greeted by the friendly shop owner. The shop is a modern terrarium and plant craft business run by a mother/daughter team. Championing an organic and natural process when creating  their terrariums, the Zen Succulent is a perfect place to peruse while taking a break from all the eating you’ll be doing downtown." - WillowTree Durham

I ADORE this place! They have beautiful plants and it feels like you’re walking into a jungle when you come in. They have so many types of plants to buy and also have a bulk soap refill station!

My cousin sent me a gift certificate for my birthday and I was thrilled to put it to good use today! Staff were welcoming and answered ALL of my questions about a zillion plants until I narrowed down my choice. I’m confident that the plants I picked will survive in my apartment because I was able to bring home ones specially suited for the kind of light I have. It was my first time in, but won’t be my last!

After walking by many times and even reading out it, I decided to stop by to show some support. My office needed a little greenery and this was the right place. The staff person was extremely welcoming and helpful with different plants and options. I walked out with a beautiful plant for my office table and gorgeous little succulent for my desk (both with very nice planters). I also appreciated the watering tips.

Google
Small shop with extremely helpful and friendly staff who will help you find what you need and let you know how to care for it. Sell a variety of succulents and plants as well as pots, soil, and other related stuff. Scented candles as well. Great service.

Google
This store was more than just a store, it was an experience. From the aesthetics, customer service, safety (#SocialDistanceSZN), and the array and diversity of plants to purchase... I couldn't recommend this store more highly. I left with a coral cactus -- Eurphorbia Lactea Crest, specifically, for all my #SucculentGang heads out there -- and I couldn't be happier! Fairly priced, beautifully grown and tended to, I look forward to giving it the happiest of homes and can't wait to re-visit ZEN Succulent as my plant family continues to grow. HIGHLY recommended The ZEN Succulent for all your succulent needs!

Google
I had a very satisfying shopping experience. The two leaf plants (fern birdnest) were bought here today. The lady in ZEN is very warm and enthusiastic. She helped me to choose my ideal plants which are easy to keep and can live happily inside my two-window room. I definitely recommend here.

Google
I had a gift certificate and wasn't sure what to get since I'm running out of plant space at home. The sales associate was so upbeat and helpful. It was fun having someone there who was as excited about my gift certificate as I was! Here's the plant stand I ended up purchasing. :)

Google
I heard amazing thins about Zen Succulent. However, when I went to their Durham store I was very disappointed. Their social media is ON POINT! When I went into the shop, the girl never spoke to me. She didn't even ask what my friend and I were looking for. I was very surprised. It is a tiny store. A hello can go a long ways.

Yelp
Such a neat find in downtown Durham! We just stopped in after seeing it nearby, but it seems like The ZEN Succulent has quite the following on social media. A small space with a plentiful selection. Tons of reasonably priced plants, succulents, and pots. The lady working was so nice and very knowledgeable. The prices vary, but there's even a wall of little mini succulents for under $5!

Yelp
This place we stumbled upon while in town and I'm so glad we did! I got 2 new little babies and one bigger whale plant we are so excited for! The lady was so friendly and personable and chatted with us all. Just very welcoming and kind! I will be telling anyone about this place! And I will personally be back when I'm in the area

Yelp
The ZEN Succulent has been on my places-to-go list for as long as I can remember and I'm so happy to have finally made my way into their flagship store in downtown Durham last week. I'll start with the fact that they limit the number of people allowed to shop in the store and kindly ask people to wait their turn. I really appreciate this since the store is a little on the smaller side. They carry a variety of house plants, big and small, as well as planters/cover pots, stationary, gifts, dried flowers, and other cool items that would be great for any plant lover. The woman working was also very nice! I messaged them on Instagram a few days before I stopped by because I've been on the hunt for a peace lily and, lucky me, they had a couple in stock! I also walked away with a beautiful golden pothos (devil's ivy) because I'm a plant addict. I would say that their prices are fair and comparable to what I would normally spend on plants that I usually buy online so I'm happy. Even happier to get out of the house and to support a local Black-owned business. I didn't inspect the plants ~too~ much at the store before buying honestly (which i never recommend doing), but was really happy when I got home to see that they were in great shape and the soil was a nice aerated mix. Just needed to give the leaves a little cleaning with water and neem oil and they're shining! I have never been, but I live closer to their Raleigh location and will definitely make a point to stop by soon. Gotta keep up with my New Years goal of getting one new plant a month lol. Love this place! Definitely recommend stopping by and looking around.

Yelp
Omg!!! I am so happy that I stumbled upon this place. It's located downtown so parking can be tricky. This spot is filled with indoor plants. There are a lot of variety! I had lots of questions and she answered every question! I'll be back soon

Yelp
My friend and I went to support a local business when we were doing our plant shopping. We've heard such great things about zen. The associate in the store was amazing and did a great job with helping us pick out the plants that were a good fit for us. The team also did a really good job at making sure everyone was practicing social distancing while shopping. I love the wide variety of pots you can get with your plant. It was really sweet of them to put the plants in the pot for us! If anybody is looking or their first plant and want someone to assist them on understanding how to take care of it then go to Zen!!

Yelp
This adorable plant shop is a must-visit if you're in need of a plant-related gift. I was lucky enough to get a gift card here, and ended up purchasing a ponytail palm, two calatheas, a succulent, and two pretty pots. In addition to plants, there are fun cards and gifts available for purchase, like candles, candies, etc. Parking can be tricky in the area, so I recommend coming on a weekend.

Yelp
Super cute and zen shop in downtown durham selling mostly plants and plant related products, but also other household and decor items like candles, diffusers, and wall art. Good place to go to buy gifts. I attended their succulent terrarium workshop, and I truly felt like I learned so much about succulents and terrariums. Megan, the owner, is knowledgeable and passionate about plants and terrariums, and I left with a beautiful terrarium that I designed as well as the confidence that I could keep it alive.

Yelp
My friend moved out to NC for grad school and I wanted to buy him an apartment warming gift! Found this place online easily and had many plant selections to choose from with inexpensive prices plus small delivery fee. Online ordering wasn't difficult at all. I really like the website very beautiful and clean. Would like to add they're also on Instagram (not linked on website) Got the email confirmation right away and an email with information on instructions for their delivery and pick-up options. I still had issues with delivery but when I called the employees were super accommodating and kind! Very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Sept. 2019 - this store is in a temporary space upstairs but will be moving downstairs between The Parlour and Jeddah's Tea soon. The owner is pleasant and knowledgeable and will help you with questions (or look it up for you if she doesn't know). The space is relatively small so the selection isn't huge but there's enough for someone who wants a plant or who wants to customize a small terrarium. If you want to support a local business rather than a big box, this is the place for succulents.

Yelp
Visiting this shop for the first time sent me into a state of awe. The space is beautifully organized and offers items from air plants to macrame hangers and dangling Pothos to artsy ceramic planters. Adela answered my "fifty-leven" questions and reported three plants for me. The shop was out of Snake plants at the time, but Adela was able to offer alternatives for easy-going and equally gorgeous plants. I was just gifted a Snake plant by a friend, and I cannot wait to revisit The Zen Succulent to pick out another pot for it. Thank you to Adela for all her help, and Megan for offering this space!

Yelp
I wandered in here one day when I was just walking around downtown Durham. The woman behind the counter was immediately helpful without making me feel watched, she was just happily chatting away with me while I looked around and she sorted moss. The whole store is beautiful and is a succulent lovers dream - they have so many types and even have tiny moss balls! Their DIY bar was perfect as well for anyone trying to make a terrarium exactly to their likes. I told her that I can never keep any plants alive ever and she helped me figure out which I should get and even let me know that if I was having trouble with it I could come back in for advice. I better watch myself though because before I know it I might a plant mom to a zillion baby plants!

Yelp
Really cute store in the middle of Durham. It's connected to the crystals store. As you'd expect, there's a wide range of small plants and succulents to choose from, but there are also cards, beautiful jewelery and other small gifts to check out. While speaking to the woman running the store that day she mentioned that there will be a Raleigh store shortly! I'm super excited about that.

Yelp
This shop just gave me life!! I was looking for an event to do fir my sister's birthday celebration and found the terrarium creation services if Megan and Zen Succulents. Wonderful experience, knowledgeable, and fun. Highly recommend! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
I love, love The Zen Succulent. It's a tiny shop that provides an enormous amount of good energy with a great selection of succulents, plants, planters and containers, and beautifully crafted terrariums. Every time I visit, I want to take everything home! Megan is amazing and her smile is so infectious. I'm also envious of the gorgeous Rachel Campbell painting. The Zen Succulent has wonderful gift ideas for almost any occasion. I also love that they sell other local artists' products. I think I spotted some Lauren Sumner pottery at one visit. They also offer workshops on terrarium building, calligraphy, photography, macrame hanging planters, and spoon carving. Staff is always so knowledgeable and friendly.

Yelp
The Zen Succulent is a new business located past Bull City Burger on Parrish St. It is a beautiful, light airy space filled with succulents, air plants, terrarium making supplies, and pre-made terrariums. The staff are friendly and helpful. The only slight negative is they clearly focus more on their pre-made terrariums and their stock of air plants is fairly limited. I went in to shop for a replacement air plant after my previous one passed (RIP little guy). Sadly, they only had a few types to choose from and they were all a bit plain considering my previous air plant had so much character and colour. That said, their pre-made terrariums are beautiful and will lend a zen to any home. Go check out The Zen Succulent, you'll probably find something that you like and if not, try making your own! Perfect for adding a bit of lively and lovely decor to any home.

Yelp
I love this place! Beautiful, serene, with an awesome selection of plants and containers. I bought an adorable vase that looks like a woman's head, and a HUGE tillandsia air plant (haven't been able to find these anywhere else in Durham) to sit inside. The woman at the register was super friendly and knowledgeable. I love how they have a build-your-own terrarium station, but honestly the ones they're selling are so beautiful and reasonably priced that I'd probably just stick with one of those! :) They also have a super fun instagram that I love to follow!

Stephen M.

Yelp
I think this place is really cute and it would be awesome if the plants were better taken care of. I was really sad to see that almost all the plants were dried out and wilted. It was so depressing I had to leave. Just don't forget to water your plants...

Yelp
Such a cute succulent shop in downtown Durham! We stumbled on Zen Succulent on a weekend and we ended up wandering around the teeny tiny store for probably 30 minutes, because it was like a jungle you want to keep exploring. Beautiful plants--so many I've never seen at other nurseries--and equally charming pots, terrarium globes, etc. I love that Zen Succulent will build a terrarium or pot your plant for you right in the store. So much love and care goes into everything they offer and it shows. Everything is so carefully curated, which means I end up wanting to buy it all.

Yelp
My sister and I went to a succulent terrarium building workshop at the Zen Succulent last night and had so much fun!! Megan was super friendly and clearly very knowledgeable. I know nothing about succulents, while my sister's a bit of a succulent fanatic. We both came away having learned new things and with awesome finished products. We'd definitely sign up for more workshops they offer!

Cindy S.

Yelp
Went to the Zen Succulent to buy an overpriced housewarming gift for a friend. When we walked in, I said audibly to my husband, "let's hurry up, we're running late," and the woman at the counter said, "I'm going to bring the signs inside, be right back" and disappeared for well over five minutes. This was especially confusing given that it was a solid 45 minutes until the store closed. The selection was mediocre - the plants are fine, but given the nature of the store, you'd expect there to be more potted in nice pots rather than generic plastic ones. It's also very expensive. In all, Zen Succulent is fine if you're in a jam, however there are many other plant stores with a bigger selection and lower prices that I'd try first.

Yelp
I have recently reengaged my plant obsessive side, and was thrilled to see this shop open up in Durham. The owner, Megan, is helpful and knowledgeable, and also has great taste. She manages to pack so much into the shop without making it feel overwhelming-it's more like finding treasures at every turn. Her selection is really unique, and she makes sure you know how to care for the plants you buy (they are all easy care, which is makes it easy to shop without worry). On top of the plants that have come home with me, I have also gotten thank you gifts for people I have worked with. Megan actually spent two hours with me one afternoon getting a bunch of them ready to go. Can't wait to bring my four year old in to make a terrarium together!

Yelp
Great little shop to explore! Everything is beautiful and the ambiance makes you want to fill your home/life with plants (well, that is what it did for me). I purchased a 100% hemp cord hanging basket that came with an air plant and I love it. If you are looking for gifts, this is a spot to check - there is likely something for everyone! Note: the shop is connected (through a hallway) to the store next to it, which confused me at first because I entered through the adjacent store.

Yelp
Love this little space of love and life! The owner, Megan, is awesome. She is so sweet and knowledgeable and can tell you just about anything about plants (especially the plants she has chosen in her shop). You can't help but just feel happy walking into this space! And there's always something new everytime! Love Megan, love The Zen Succulent, love the good vibes here and LOVE how they offer classes too!

Carly D.

Yelp
All the heart eyes for this little shop! Beautifully curated selection of trendy, pretty products (and some locally sourced.) The owner was friendly & willing to help - I bought a cactus & pot and she potted it for me in store for free! Check out their dreamy Instagram too!

Yelp
Went in here with a new vessel from CB2 we were really excited about and left without buying a thing. We let the woman behind the counter know we hadn't assembled a succulent planting before. She pointed to some plants at different price points and said their DIY bar was closed because of gift orders and let us know the owner was out of town in Europe and they were just trying to stay afloat. No introduction to plants or soil or the basics of how to build an awesome succulent planting. Cute inventory but squeezed into a small space and missing good customer service. We left and went to Stone Bros. for plants. We got everything we needed without the bad customer service. We had been eyeing Zen Succulent since our move from Portland, OR and were really disappointed.

Yelp
Megan was super helpful in finding some cacti. So many lovely succulents, air plants, and containers. I feel like everything is priced super well which is awesome because I half expected to walk in and not be able to buy anything since it's downtown and next to everyday magic. All of the plants looked very healthy and hearty not like going to a big box store and half are wilted. They even have a make your own terrarium station you buy your container and plant and it's a 5 dollar fee to get all the necessary soil rocks etc to set up your very own terrarium! So if you get a chance and are looking for some awesome plants in the succulent or vine family they probably have it. Highly suggest checking it out.
google avatar

Yelp
It doesn't require a lot to greet customers. Very basic skills were dismissed. Inexcusable. People notice when you neglect to simply acknowledge them. I didn't buy anything for that reason alone. The only reason my friend bought anything is because it was a last minute graduation gift for our friend. First and last time going back. Hope they have the funds to stay a float without customers. Won't be recommending the place either.

Yelp
Awesome shop in downtown Durham. Was able to meet the owner manager she's awesome as well very helpful friendly and informative. We will be back!:)

Yelp
I LOVE this store. I've been twice so far, and as I told Megan the owner it's like walking straight into an etsy store. Heaven! Each time I've gone I could walk around over and over because each time there were new little things to notice. Their succulent collection is hands down the best I've ever seen. Ones I've never even heard of are there, and the workers and owners are SO nice. I can't recommend this place highly enough!

Yelp
I was in town with my friend for her birthday. We wanted to do the build your own terrarium bar, and the website said no reservations needed. We arrived, cold from the rainy day and ran upstairs to their temporary location. I walked in and told the lady at the counter we wanted to do the build your own terrarium bar and she looked around and said they were "a little busy" and to try back in 30 minutes. There were 2 seats open at a 4-top table. I asked suggestions of places to go for 30 minutes since it was so cold, rainy, and windy outside. She gave really odd recommendations instead of selling the business and store. I mentioned a few times that there were two seats open at a table...neither employee seemed to pick up on it. Needless to say, this was the main item on our itinerary for today but we didn't feel like waiting for an opening after seeing there were open seats, and no guarantee of a seat being saved in our absence. It was just all around an awkward experience to see open seats and being told there were no open spots for us...with 4 customers total in the store. It felt like our business wasn't wanted or needed. It was such a huge bummer, as we had wanted to do this for weeks. So we decided to spend our money elsewhere and not return. Too bad.

C. V.

Yelp
Always super helpful and answers all my questions whenever I go in. Love the plants and inspiration.
