Finally! A delicious meal in Oslo! It was a long time coming...but it finally happened!
I came here with one of my close friends and her family during the middle of the week at around 2:30pm. The place was hardly crowded, but we had a reservation, so it didn't really matter. Truthfully, I had previously avoided this place due to the pretentious atmosphere of it and the fact that every time I ask about it, someone tells me 'the celebrities always eat there'. That is enough to deter me from any place (means the place is probably too fancy for my liking).
I was happy that this place did defy what I had expected. A bit pretentious? Yes. But I was so thankful to only have one fork and one knife, and not a bajillion.
For an appetizer, I ordered the 'Hummer Carbonara' or Lobster Carbonara. It was 195kr and considered a 'småretter', or small plate. Well, that it was not. It would have easily filled me up and then some. But oh my goodness was it delicious! Definitely the best thing I have eaten at any restaurant in Norway thus far.
Since I had already placed my order for my Entre, I had to just make room for it. I ordered the Grilled Okse Entrecote. It came with a side of mushrooms, green beans, and bearnaisesaus. The menu said it would also have some fries...but I never saw them come out (and didn't complain because I was so full from everything else!) This plate was so-so. I'm not really much of a red meat eater, so when I do eat it, the meat must be cooked to my liking (medium-rare). This was pretty well-done. Definitely not the best cut I've ever had, but it was certainly edible. But I will give a special shout to their green beans. INCREDIBLE. My first time in Norway even seeing green beans on a menu (they are such a staple item in the US). Theatercafeet cooked them to perfection. This entre ended up costing 295kr.
While I definitely preferred the lobster carbonara to the main dish, I have no right to complain about both.
Service was excellent here and we got our water refilled without asking. Believe me when I say that that is a big deal in Oslo. The ambiance was nice. Not really my scene, but definitely someone's!
As for the celebrities...that is certainly the truth. While I didn't know who any were, the people with me said the beautiful woman at the table next to us was Liv Ullman and the guy who walked in prior to us leaving was Morten Abel. No idea who they are, but Norwegians apparently do.
This is most definitely a place I'd return to...especially if they keep that Hummer Carbonara around on the menu!
