On the Grid : GymKC

"The GymKC Westside is not your typical working out experience. Imagine working out in a 1950’s basement of the party house on the block. Bright orange walls, shag carpet, vintage lamps and décor everywhere, it’s almost sad when no one offers you a Mai Tai. The classes are fun, especially Paulates, The Bikefast Club and Yoga with Bernie. Try not to look surprised when you see people practicing their unicycle tricks in the back room." - Rachel Sleeter

We love it here. Clean, plenty of space. Good atmosphere and cool decor. Not any bros working out grunting away, just people focused on their fitness journey. We love all the open space and variety of machines. They offer free classes too. We love the 24hr access and it's fingerprint entry so you know there will be no one who isn't supposed to be there. By far the best and safest of the 3 GymKC locations.

Rhianna Weilert

Google
My knees appreciate the soft cushiony floor. The vintage vibe is really well done. It's so spacious, I usually have no one around me. Love the flexibility of the entry door and coming whenever.

Leonardo Sarmiento

Google
Very clean and lots of space for use. Haven’t used bathroom facilities but they appear to be very clean and accessible.

The Gym KC is the best value for the money. It’s just normal people, no one is too chatty but no one is rude, the west side location is especially chill and has a good basic selection of machines. Also a nice group room that’s always empty so great for dumbbell workouts, stretching, and pics. The river market location is probably the best for plate loaded machines tho.

Brianna Tedlock

Google
I love this gym so much! I always feel so comfortable when I workout here and I never have to wait on a machine. It’s retro vibe is super unique, and they keep it clean. The cycling classes when the weather is nice are my favorite! They open the garage door and it feels awesome.

Google
I love this gym. The staff is really nice and helpful. It's a strange looking gym with orange walls and weird layout but I love it. There are always machines available to use and I like the yoga class. I always see people use machines and never wipe their sweat off but the staff does a good job of wiping down the machines, moping and washing towels. Very safe and comfortable feeling. Pros: 24 hours, affordable, roomy, nice staff, good classes, clean bathrooms Cons: Can be crowded after work (like most places), if you forget your code after hours you can't go inside, people don't always wipe down machines, limited parking

Google
Has all the equipment needed, to exercise all muscle groups. I would like to see some more hammer strength machines. But I understand space is basically full. Open 24/7, reasonable price, access to all theGYMkc locations, clean. Worth the membership.

Matt Stailey

Google
I really like this gym! I like to lift weights and each location has a good amount of free weights and machines. I rarely have to wait on a piece of equipment. I also like to attend the yoga classes that they offer 3 times a week. They offer many other classes that are included with the membership as well.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of visiting this gym when I was in KC for work. I got the one week pass and it was $20, a great value considering some of the other gyms were asking $20 to $30 per DAY! The initial setup took a little bit of time because in addition to the normal gym sign-up they also get a digital scan of your hand and provide you with a pass code. The upside though is that you can literally check yourself at anytime. Do you want to work about after 10pm or before 5am? This is the gym for you. Everyone has great gym etiquette; from reracking weights, to cleaning and wiping down, to not hogging stations or talking about the weather (my #1 pet peeve). They also have a decently comprehensive sets of power racks/ squat racks/ Smith machines/ cardio etc. I wish they would have a separate Olympic weight lifting and deadlift platform or a reverse hyper but that's asking a bit much. The only very minor slight criticism I have is that the lights in the gym could be a bit brighter. But again very easy to overlook that in light of all the other amenities they provide. Definitely one of the best non-commercial/ local gyms I've ever been to. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I'm not sure it's possible to love a gym more without being addicted to steroids. I frequent the 2020 Washington location and appreciate the following things about this gym: -no contract -cute decor -affordable rate -open 24 hours -TONS of classes and they're filled with awesome people at a wide range of fitness levels (my favorite classes are the zumba and spin classes) -never crowded (seriously) -attractive members who are fit but not meatheads Some of the equipment is older, some of the equipment is newer but they pretty much have every piece of equipment I've ever been interested in trying out. I've never felt uncomfortable here and that's important to me. Everything I was looking for in a gym I found at Scott Fitness. Postscript-- Scott Fitness also has a bunch of trainers available. I meet with Cheryl once a week and I'm not exaggerating when I say that she has changed my life.

Yelp
I first went to this location shortly after it opened, to check it out. Its got more space to be funky, and John Scott definitely took advantage of that. 60's/70's decor, manequins, and creepy family photography are just a few of the things you will see at this location, in addition to people working out. This location's art seems to swap out more regularly than the River Market location, which is cool too. I like the weights and pilates classes at this location, but I don't like doing solo cardio here. There are mainly treadmills with a few elliptical options, and since there are no TVs (I'm not counting the fuzzy black and white TVs that serve more as decor) I find it really hard to make myself do much, which is why I am not giving it 5 stars. If you are a cardio king/queen, that may not pose an issue for you. The parking lot is wonky, which is just typical of downtown. If it's full, there's street parking available. This location has a decent amount of space, offers several kinds of classes, always has music playing in case you forget or don't have an iPod, and good air conditioning. Aside from the lack of TVs, this is a great location with a great vibe.

Yelp
What up, I hate working out. But unlike those skinny peeps with really good metabolisms, I have to! I love TheGymkc because I don't feel like I'm competing with the beef heads and I love that it's 24 hours. The price is great for the anemities it offers plus the total of 3 gyms. Pilates is ridiculously hard but I've done it twice here so that must say something! The Westside is my primary gym and although I feel like I'm working out at the Brady Bunch house, it has all the things I need :) Who has 2 thumbs and gives this place 2 thumbs up!? This girl!

Yelp
Looking for a unpretentious gym - then GymKC is for you. They have a few locations - Crossroads and in the RiverMarket. The one in the RiverMarket is finally reopening, but we will still go to both spots for training. The offer month to month memberships and you can pause and resume if you need to. You don't that option with a lot of gyms. So the gym offers plenty of free and universals weights as well as a number of treadmills, ellipticals, and stair masters for your cardio workout. The have a spinning section for those wanting to a change of pace from the stationary bikes. They also have a couple of rowing machines. All in all I have been pleased being a member of GymKC and would put it over some of the other local downtown gyms. If you're interested - give them a call and schedule a visit. They gave us 3 days before we signed up and we've been members ever since.

Yelp
My husband and I came to Kansas City from San Diego to visit family and go to a wedding when we came across this lovely gym on Google. We regularly exercise so we needed something up to par. This gym is super cool to say the least. It has multiple rooms, TONS of machines and equipment. It has a cozy feeling to it. This gym is small enough for it to feel personal but also big enough to not feel like you're always next to someone. It's the perfect size and they always played great music when we went. All of the employees are nice and willing to help you with anything. Overall, I'd recommend this gym to everyone! Can't wait to go back whenever we're there.

Yelp
I hate sweating. I don't like working out. Not even a little. That being said, I love TheGYMkc. I've taken a few different classes so far, and this is what I know. Paul's BOAS class will beat your ass. And its a blast! The class is upbeat and he is very encouraging. Even with sweat stinging my eyes and my stomach churning, I enjoyed his banter through out the hour long session through hell. At the end of the class I feel beat and accomplished. It is "only yoga"! And its a helluva work out. Bernie issues the beat down. He's encouraging and hands on. Correcting poses, moving through out the class, providing encouragement and correction where needed. I really really hate cardio, but somehow yoga provides cardio and muscle training as well. Bernie hosts two sessions, Sundays and Thursdays. His 90 minute sessions are jam packed with sweat, heavy breathing, and a little pain. But they are also tremendously relaxing too. Who knew I could get this bendy? Touching my toes and things! My daughter gets excited when I come home and teach her a new pose after class. When I leave his classes I have muscles that ache that I never knew I even had and for whatever reason I can't wait to go back for more. If I could offer one suggestion, it would be in regards to the men's room. It could really use a stick-up, an incense, or febreeze - something. The gym has just about every machine you can imagine. And I've never waited to use one. Lots of clean towels and spray to keep the cooties away. The staff and instructors I've interacted with have been friendly and upbeat. Even signing up for my six month membership was a breeze. No bullshit and no pressure. Like I said upfront, I'm really not into working out. But I am into TheGYMkc.

Yelp
This is such a cool gym! I'm visiting KC from out of town for two weeks staying downtown. The owner hooked me up with an unlimited week pass. It's not super busy and everyone is laid back. It has every machine you could want and the setup is very unique. I wish we had gyms Iike this where I am from. I am happy I found this place and go everyday! One of the highlights of my trip here. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
As a former member of a plethora of other gyms, some corporate/chain gyms, some not, I have to say Scott Fitness has been my favorite thus far. I actually dread moving because I know it's going to be hard to find a gym as close, convenient and comfortable. A bit about SF: *Four locations around the downtown/immediate Metro area *All classes are free with membership *All personal training sessions are at a set $40/hour *You're not stuck with a contract *Most locations are open 24 hours The atmosphere of Scott is very laid back as well. Not a lot of sweaty, muscle-pumping and people-ogling going on, thank goodness. However, each gym still offers plenty of equipment, and the staff is always incredibly friendly. Scott is like a home gym...away from home.

Yelp
Although I only make it to this particular location from time to time, I thought it would be appropriate to leave a long overdue review... I definitely prefer the overall set up of the Uptown location where I frequent, particularly with regards to the treadmills and other cardio machines. However, the decor here is definitely a lot more visually stimulating and interesting! One of the things that has been bringing me to this part of time in the past weeks is the Yoga classes. After months of high-intensity, high impact workouts such as running, cycling, jump rope, and weightlifting I have been experiencing way too many injuries and too much stress to handle. I gave Pilates a chance last year and was amazed at what it did for my core strength so I decided to give Yoga a try. I went to one of the Yoga Scult classes in the evening first and liked it pretty well overall. Some aspects of it were quite challenging for a newcomer and others were pretty familiar, as I have been incorporated a lot of Pilates into my routine for the past year. The only problem I had with the class was the very loud, pounding music from the Zumba class on the other side of the gym. I guess that is unavoidable, but still made it pretty hard to relax during the first half of the class. Then there's Bernie's "It's Only Yoga!" class..... I had heard good things about it so decided that I needed to spend my Sunday afternoon there. Boy am I glad. The class was seriously nothing short of a religious experience. I'm really not just saying that either. I am a glutton for punishment and love doing the hardest workouts possible. However, nothing I've done prepared me for some of the most challenging things I'd ever be asked to do in a class nor did anything prepare me for the incredible feeling of tranquility that I experienced after class was dismissed. This class helps you physically, mentally, and emotionally. I never thought I would go to a Yoga class, in fact it was about the last thing I ever planned to do. However, I plan on going back to it -- again and again!

Yelp
I LOVE this gym. Reasons? 1) Reasonably priced! (40/month for individual, or you can split a membership with someone for only 30) 2) Several locations around KC 3) Their classes are awesome and range from yoga to kickboxing 4) NO contracts! 5) The staff is super friendly 6) Did I mention all the awesome classes?! 7) The gym is always super clean and has all the equipment larger gyms boast I'd definitely recommend Scotts to anyone who is looking for a gym membership. And if worse comes to worse and it doesn't work out, you won't have a contact holding you back when you decide to leave!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
I love this gym!! I've been going here a little over 7 months and recently decided to purchase the full year membership. The staff is so incredibly friendly, especially Bob. One of the things I like the best is that you can go to any of their three locations with your membership - and they are open 24/7. They have a variety of single membership options available and couples memberships are available at a discounted price as well. They have two large spaces for yoga and cycle classes at this location. They have a nice large mat area, two or three of each machine, and quite a few dumbbell racks. It is not super fancy, as mentioned by others it has a 70's vibe, but it is a gym and has everything I need and more.

Yelp
OK here's the deal. Scott Fitness is dead, and they have rebranded themselves as TheGYMkc. Not a lot seems to have changed in terms of atmosphere or vibe, which is excellent. Even better, however, is what HAS changed. Mainly, an owner that seems to give a shit and is willing to put some money into her business. All three of the TheGYMkc locations are going through upgrades, but I think the most significant has to be the Westside location. They FINALLY have... wait for it... SHOWERS! Who'd have thought? A gym with showers! Additionally, I learned a little something about the yoga classes. It seems the reason they were moved out of the cave and into the center of the gym was b/c it would get too cold in there during the winter. I guess they're back in the cave again. I do wish this could be rectified permenantly, but with the new owner actually investing money into the space, maybe it will be. Anyhow, I know I was somewhat harsh on this location on my last review. But not without reason. I have to say, however, that things look on the upswing, and I'm optimistic. Finally having showers is more than enough reason to bump them up to four stars. Now if I could only find that dang scale!
google avatar

Olivia M.

Yelp
Hands down the best gym I've been too! The staff is the best; Pat, Pete and Lee were always helpful and welcoming. No one is pushing you to get a trainer, no contract, and its clean. What more can you possible ask for? The number of racks they have is the best compared to any gym in the city and the culture is pretty much to show up and get in a good sweat.

D. A.

Yelp
I've been a member here for over a year and it's great, except for one detail. I understand the guideline that no one can be completely shirtless here. it's actually awesome that I don't have to see men shirtless. However, I own a lot of athletic clothing that is cropped or has a little bit of my stomach showing. As someone who's struggled with weight through the years, being confident enough to wear this clothing makes me feel really good! I thought this would be fine as I've seen other girls wear similar stuff. This isn't the case. Some Employees seem to really be the shirt police. I've talked to several other women about this and they have said it makes them also feel bad about themselves and they are leaving this gym because of it. This just doesn't make sense for a gym, nor is it consistent (I've worn the same thing on different occasions and only been told it's "inappropriate" once). I've come multiple times wearing something I feel really good in that motivates me, only to be told Its not allowed due to my shirt lifting as I'm doing a movement. It makes the gym a place I don't really want to be in anymore. It's discouraging and not uplifting in a space that's meant to be motivating. I really think this gym should update it's policy and start uplifting women, considering it's owned by one.

Yelp
SF is really great for working out on a budget. The equipment is a little bit old, but totally functional for whatever you need to do. Sometimes no frills is totally a-o-kay. The only other thing I might get irritated about is the music. They never get that one right. But then again, that's what your ipod is for! All in all, I like the place. Especially the river market location.
google avatar

Tashina S.

Yelp
Amazing amazing AMAZING gym!! It's just the coolest gym known to man. They offer 3 locations but Westside is my absolute FAVE. Everything about this place is perfection!
google avatar

Matthew K.

Yelp
Well this place is pretty rad. The atmosphere at the midtown location is artsy fartsy and comfortable. Plus, it has better equipment than a lot of those funny, generic places full of ripped chix and doods. The people that work there are cool and so is the monthly deal they offer. Afterwards, go get boozed out at Boozefish (wine bar).

Yelp
The Gym KC isnt just the best gym in kansas city- it is the best gym in the known universe. just one read through of their relaxed and funny website tells you everything you will need to know about what kind of people they are and what kind of business theyre running. I have been a member at other shitty corporate gyms (see my review on LifeTime Fitness) and the Gym KC blows them all out of the water. No cancellation fees mean that you can stop and start your membership at your leisure, for any reason at all. Really. Rather work out outside during the summer? Cancel your membership for a few months and start again in the fall. Got a busy month coming up and know you wont make it in enough times to justify the cost? Cancel for the month, start the next month. Seriously. This place is so incredibly practical for the every day person who wants to work out, but has never been comfortable with some ridiculous contract with all sorts of clauses and cancellation policies built in to take away your money. working out can be miserable enough- you dont need someone draining your bank account to boot. other amazing features this gym offers: three locations, and they all rock. open 24 hours a day. never overcrowded and there has never been a time that a machine or piece of equipment i wanted to use wasnt available to me. a zillion class offerings. oh, speaking of classes- do yourself a favor and go to the zumba class at the westside location. the teacher is SO fun and awesome, and the best part is that during the class the studio lights go dim and there's a disco ball and other club-like lighting which not only makes it a super fun dance club atmosphere, but also lets you hide in the dark a bit so you dont feel quite so silly trying to shake your hips when you most certainly have no talent for doing so. in summation, if youre looking for a great gym in the kansas city area, give The Gym KC a try- and hey, if you dont like it, youre not locked into anything, but i have a feeling youll be sticking around.

Yelp
I have never liked a gym so much. Scott Fitness is the bomb! The classes rock (I'm a fan of zumba!, body weight, bike-on-a-stand, 50/50) & the design/decor of the gyms rock. Locations are great & each offers up it's own charm. The Westside location is like stepping into a timewarp of the 60's/70's - how cool is that?! Affordable, open 24 hours, & like their motto says: no douchebags! Staff is super & the places are clean & never too packed. They play good music (most of the time) & have computers for use. Different in the best way.
google avatar

Andi M.

Yelp
I love this gym. I love the atmosphere and flexibility. I especially love that all the classes are included. I go to zumba and Jacory is amazing. The class is fun and kicks your butt. I have such a good time that it seems like as soon as class starts that it's over. I highly recommend this gym to anyone.
google avatar

Mari M.

Yelp
I am so happy with this easy-going gym. Owner, Jonetta, is as genuine and as caring as they get. The trainers are inspiring, especially Cheryl Birkey, who is so incredibly supportive. Paul's stationary bike class is my choice of cardio these days. I wish I could get there more often.

Brian C.

Yelp
If Scott Fitness was being summed up in a movie quote it would be old dragnet quote "Just the facts ma'am". Or in this case. Just the workout. That is what Scott Fitness is there for a place to workout. If you need being and flashy, or are looking for a social club then it is not for you. If you are looking for a place you can get a good workout, and without a lot of complication bingo. You can go any time 24/7, there are no contracts, or special requirements.... other than to pay your bill. You can sign up anytime and cancel at any time. This particular location is noticalbly smaller than the other three, so it is more limited in equipment. Most of which is cardio focused. They do have a handful of weight machines though to cover all the basic muscle groups. Its kind of a moot point though. This location is actually closing at the end of this month so we will all have to make due with the three other much better equipped locations starting Jan. 1st.
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
x2 what everyone else has said. I've never enjoyed a gym this much. (2.0 River Market) Everything you could hope for in a neighborhood gym. This one raised my standards. Well worth the walk from downtown.
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
As a former Prairie Life & Lifetime Fitness member, I can say that Scott Fitness is the complete opposite--but that's what I love about it. I always felt uncomfortable at the fancy expensive places (not to mention, their pricey memberships & contracts were painful). SF is 24 hours, there are 3 (and I heard a 4th just opened?) locations, it is very relaxed and chill, and there is enough equipment to go around. It is *such* a welcoming and comfortable environment. AND it's affordable!! There are no joining fees, no contracts.. it's just month-to-month. The classes are also great. Perfect for the avg person who just works out a few times a week and doesn't need all the fancy stuff. Check it out!
google avatar

Stephanie B.

Yelp
A friend and I went to Thursday night Zumba. The instructor (male, long dreads) was AWESOME. We had a great time and will definitely be back!
google avatar

Robert O.

Yelp
Check the other reviews on theGYMkc Westside - all 5 stars. The other theGYMkc locations are fine, but Westside is easily the best. Never a wait to get on equipment, almost no meat heads, and super friendly staff.
google avatar

Dan D.

Yelp
This is what a neighborhood gym should be like. 24 hour access and plenty of machinery and room to work out in. The staff is friendly and always there with a smile when you come in.

Chelsea C.

Yelp
The COOLEST, most unique spot to work out. The owner, Jonetta, is a true bad ass who will definitely bring the pain, while the awesome decor of all three gyms keeps the atmosphere fun. Best set of gyms in Kansas City. Get Shit Done!
google avatar

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
I hate working out but TheGYMkc and Cheryl actually made it enjoyable. The laid back atmosphere makes it easy to work out and not feel pressured. There is a nice variety of classes that are included in the membership fee if you want to change it up.I also worked with Cheryl for a few months and she's a top notch trainer. She is challenging, encouraging, and hilarious. Our sessions would go so quickly and it made fitness actually fun. At times the River Market location can get pretty busy, but it's never overly crowded.
google avatar

Leigh T.

Yelp
Love Scott Fitness! Everyone is always so nice and the classes are awesome! I highly recommend Indurocycling!
google avatar

Heidi S.

Yelp
I visited Scott Fitness during a recent business trip to KC. Great retro set up and friendly staff. Highly recommend!

David T.

Yelp
I went there this morning to sign up. Scanning in is required so I couldn't get in. A woman walked by and gave me a strange look. I thought she was a patron until she passed out towels. I guess gym KC doesn't want my business...

Louise H.

Yelp
I LOVE going to this gym. I didn't have to sign a contract and they have 2 different types of spin class! One of them has a video playing on a huge screen to make you feel like you are outside - the other is pumped full of good tunes. They are both so awesome. The gym is open 24 hours and always has equipment open. The atmosphere is comfortable and fun.

Mike F.

Yelp
John is a huge a hole. I joined and thereafter had to move away and after four phone calls the gym finally stopped billing me. When I spoke with this ass on the phone and told him how I was continuing to be billed he actually hung up on me. Maybe someday I can be a hack gym owner too.
google avatar

Steven C.

Yelp
the bomb digity! pay as you go, non binding clean friendly new equipment free classes to members. 2 for $60

Mandy M.

Yelp
They are so sweeeeeet! They let you join and cancell, join and cancell and never charge any fees. Whenever I cancell they say, "OK come back anytime :)" That is so nice. The river market gym is my favorite. Great place to work out!
