I found Theory Hair Studio through Yelp and got connected with Uyen and Mary and have been getting my extensions installed and adjusted here. My hair is wavy and has multiple colors and faded dye and Uyen was able to match my hair color and texture exactly so that the blend of my hair is seamless. I get compliments on my hair all the time! Everyone is so nice and coming here to get my hair done is so much fun! You feel welcomed and included.

THE place to go to for cut, color, hair and lash extensions. I’m so happy I found Uyen when I first moved to San Diego. She fixed my hair color and brought my hair back to life! I honestly don’t trust anyone else with my hair. I don’t live in California anymore but I make sure to book flights out to see her. She will really take the time to work with you to get the look you want. She is so great at what she does and has a real artist eye for hair. Like I said she’s the only one I go to, and you’ll feel the same way.

I was looking forward to an Asian stylist but what a huge disappointment. I could not find anywhere to hang my coat and I totally forgot when I left it beside me. She was very rushed with serving 3 clients at the same time window. I wanted Carmel color and it turned out to be ash. Color was not discussed and shown to me. She spilled a lot of the dye mixture and one plopped on my navy jacket. My Hobbs London bought jacket was destroyed. I thought never mind did not want to pile up to her life problems that I heard while I was there, this is just a jacket. Cut wasn’t too bad but oh boy my my hair is so ash light. I understand she is trying to blend with some of my grey. But now I look like I have head of grey hair. On top of that my hair is totally fried. Split ends and frizzy. Paid $391 + $50 deposit for cut and bleached hair. So sad now trying to get treatment to revive my hair.

I have been saved by Uyen twice now! The first time around my hair was very over processed and she gave me the most perfect blonde and got my hair healthy again. The second time I had extensions done at the salon at the fashion valley mall and after a few weeks they were already slipping! They were extremely poorly done and Uyen had to completely remove them and do the job again. Now my extensions are seamless, well blended, and look amazing. Uyen has an impeccable technique and always does what’s best for my hair. Absolutely love my hair every time I come here. 10/10 recommend Theory Hair🥰

Ehh. I went to Uyen during Covid and the haircut was decent. I called to book an appointment several months later, and the so-called scheduling process was rather ridiculous...the person who answered the phone said said she could most likely get me with Uyen on a specific date and a general timeframe (not even some exact time options)...and that she'd call me back. I get a call back that Uyen was fully booked, absolutely no times available forever and then tried to get me with the 3-yr experienced stylist. What professional salon doesn't have a proper scheduling system? I don't really have tolerance for this...when I've never had a scheduling issue with my few regular stylists over the past 15 years. I've had amazing ones where you books months in advance. Scheduling is fairly straight forward. Let's just say I will not return and will also advise my referrals.

The only salon I trust now to touch my hand-tied extensions. They are thorough and well worth the price. The hair they order is high quality and I've gotten tons of compliments. If you're looking to get extensions, this is 100% the place to go!

Called to ask for some basic information about their extension services and how to set up an appointment and the lady on the phone was condescending, rude, and made me feel so uncomfortable. Needless to say, I will be going somewhere else.

I've been visiting Uyen & Laisa at Theory for 4-5 years now. Uyen helped me get my thin hair back in control by recommending Oribe products and a wet brush. She & Laisa always do an excellent job on my hair cuts and have convinced me to get highlights and done an excellent job every time. I am currently moving away from San Diego but still plan to drive down to get my hair done as Theory is the only place I trust!

I was looking for a new hair salon, a new hairdresser in San Diego. I was looking for a professional very talented one, with experience and passion for blonde. I did found what I was searching. Theory Hair Studio has everything I was wanting. Miss Uyen, the owner is an amazing hair stylist with over 16 years of experience!!! She had my blonde come back right!!! I first came across Theory Hair Studio back in 2014 when I decided I wanted to go blonde. My hair is my security blanket, so I'm VERY picky when it comes to who gets to touch my hair. After reading amazing reviews and stalking their Instagram account (@theoryhairstudio) I decided that Theory Hair Studio would be a great pick and boy I was not disappointed. I came in with my natural super dark brown hair and showed Uyen (the owner of the salon) pictures of what I wanted. She explained right from the start that going from a dark brown to pretty much platinum blonde would take more than one session. I appreciated her honesty as well as her explanation of the process. It took me two sessions to get the color I desired and I was over the moon about my new hair. Fast forward to 2018, my hair had not been touched by anyone since Uyen back at the end of 2014 / early 2015. The only traces of blonde left on my head were on the ends of my hair and had faded / blended in so nicely with my outgrown "roots" (if I can even call them that lol). I came in for a cut (again showing Uyen pictures of what I wanted) and got exactly what I envisioned. Uyen is a TRUE perfectionist and pays attention to every single strand of hair on your head (no kidding)! She treats each hair cut as if she's making a custom dress for you; making sure each piece she cuts frames your face in the most flattering way (bye bye contouring!) Overall, Uyen and her team are the SWEETEST and most caring people in the world. After 3+ years of not seeing Uyen, she greeted me with the warmest smile and we caught up with each other. Uyen really makes her clients feel valued and maintains a very professional and personable relationship with every single one. Not once have I ever felt uncomfortable or left unsatisfied at Theory Hair Studio. I would totally recommend anyone to come check them out. I promise you won't regret it!

My price was about 2000-3000 bruh lmao I was like uh that's out of my price range for hair and Uyen never emailed me back after.

First time getting eyelash extensions. Uyen took the time to understand what I was looking for and counseled me through the most common pearls and pitfalls people experience when new to eyelash extensions. She did a beautiful job! On top of that, her studio is so fun. They have glasses of wine, and Dusty, the most amazing Pomeranian greeter :) also a great location in Little Italy!

I'm so happy I found Theory hair studio! I have fine hair that tangles easily and a very sensitive scalp. It was my first time getting hand-tied extensions, and Uyen answered all the million questions I had. It is also worth mentioning that every time I came to the studio, she was doing extensions on somebody, and she wears them herself. I think it speaks to her experience. I got balayage and 20" hand-tied extensions, and Uyen was so considerate and careful handling my hair. It was a great and smooth experience, from booking my appointments to receiving the service. I also really liked the product Uyen recommended to keep my extensions soft and manageable. I highly recommend Theory studio, Uyen and Chandra!

I have only gone to this studio twice and only for styles, which were basic and overpriced. Honestly only went the second time due to convenience of location. My one star has to do with the attitude and lack of respect of not only the staff but the owner. 1. They run late, 30 minutes, and the whole time blame the customer ahead of you. And not just the stylist, but the others working there as well. 2. They speak ill of the "random people" who walk up 3. This is the best: I left my blue north face fleece jacket there by mistake and received a call later that afternoon stating I had done so and that they knew I had a busy day (was getting my hair done for my best friend's Indian wedding) and that I could pick it up anytime. I came back 3 wks later and when I showed up, was told they had accidentally put it in a bag with dirty towels and thrown it away. I didn't even get into their lost and found system, but told them I could pull up the jacket to have them compensate it, and they scoffed at the fact that I was requesting for them to pay for it, stating it was my fault for coming 3 weeks later. I left, shocked, but decided to give the business the benefit of the doubt and called them. I asked to speak to the owner, assured that the blame was just because the stylist was sensitive as she had been the one that has assured me of my jacket's safe keeping, and figured the owner would be more professional. But actually, the owner was even more vehement that it took me 3 weeks to come in. When I pointed out that the fact that they had said that throwing my jacket away was an accident, not time dependent, the owner again harped on how irresponsible it was of me to wait 3 weeks. And then, she hung up on me. I'm actually not that upset to have lost a $40 jacket, nor that they wouldn't pay for it, but am upset about how they speak to and treat their clients. I am really happy to know what business I would NOT recommend for their lack of respect and how they treat others in their own community and their customers. Owner, Uyen Tran is simply one of the best stylists I've ever seen. She's meticulous and methodical when it comes to my color; aiming for a flawless immediate result as well as anticipating and preparing for the growth process. When it's time to get touched up, my hair looks gently grown out, rather than two-toned and in desperate need of attention. Each stage is beautiful because she PLANS it that way. I sincerely appreciate her attention to detail AND her willingness to work with my schedule. She's created a loyal following for a reason: Theory Hair Studio is the best.

I am in total shock. I had a very unexpected death in my family yesterday and I had to cancel my appointment. I received the reminder text and cancelled through the system. I completely forgot about this appointment while I'm matching arrangements, and grieving when someone called me from the studio. I was then told that I would bee charge half ($96) of the appointment even though I had attempted to cancel. When I asked her to please work with me through this very dark time, she hung up on me- charged me- and refused to pick up the phone. I'm already heartbroken and now in total shock that someone would treat another person grieving a loss this way. I wouldn't recommend going here to anyone- based on her unprofessional manner and money motivated behavior. Just wow.

I've been coming to Theory Hair Studio for the past year and a half and cannot recommend it more highly! I first came to Uyen for hair extensions and color. I have medium length, very fine blonde hair and was initially nervous about getting extensions fearing that it would look fake or damage my natural hair. Uyen is a true artist and meticulously blends color, so that the final product is seamless. I now have the fairtytale princess hair that I always dreamed of having! Since having extensions, my natural hair has grown stronger since I'm using less heat and am coloring my hair less frequently. I've since moved to LA and still drive down to Theory for my hair appointments because of the high caliber of Uyen's work. You truly get what you pay for! The salon also has a great atmosphere - Uyen and Laisa are both friendly and warm, as well as knowledgeable of their craft. Thank you both!

Horrible ..... Booked appointment online for 2 PM I arrived on time and I was greeted like I was lost at the door which was really awkward and uncomfortable....apparently nobody knew that I had an appointment they were surprised...which again Made me feel uncomfortable...... they finally were able to verify that I did in fact have an appointment and I wasn't lost ....hahaha...then I was told that if I didn't mind waiting for 30+ minutes because they didn't realize I had an appointment and they already had clients they needed to finish up.. I didn't make an appointment so that I can wait 30+ minutes in a tiny salon...super Disappointed with this tiny business ...oh well all just go to another salon here in the area ...good job pushing out a great customer... By the way the person helping me was the owner UYen, who I had my appointment booked with ...not good business practice my dear ....

I've been going here for over 6 years and have had everything from lashes to highlights to extensions done. She is the best in the game. Recently, she helped me get ready for my wedding by highlighting and adding in extensions, and my hair looked absolutely amazing. She was able to achieve exactly what I was looking for and more. Her extension application is flawless and people are always shocked when I tell them I have extensions in. Her meticulous work ethic and amazing talent have kept me going back for more. I had a hard time looking for the right stylist since I moved here in San Diego. Uyen, is definitely my go to! She is very informative with what she was going to do with my hair. My hair went from Asian black hair to this beautiful balayage! Theory studio has full service, high quality products, professionally trained (hair)artist, and it's atmosphere is very modern vibe. I've been going to Theory Hair Studio for years and my stylist has always been Uyen. Time and time again her attention to detail does not cease to amaze me. She is a stylist who will take the extra time to make sure she gives you the best look possible. My hair is thick, long and virtually unmanageable - if she is able to handle my hair, she can handle anyone's. I got a haircut and I asked for 2 inches off but she did what she wanted and took off 4-5 inches. I wanted all layers and again she said I think this would be better. She took off way to much hair for my bangs. It was awful and not worth over $100 for a haircut!!!!!!!

I've been coming to Theory for over a year and it is by far the best salon in the little Italy area! I wouldn't trust my hair to anyone else at this point - the ladies do such a stellar job of making sure my hair looks amazing every time! The salon is super cute and they have a little garden area out back where they can have you sit while you get your hair done. They take pride in their work and it shows! Cannot recommend them enough. I've been going to Theory and getting my lashes done by Uyen for a year now. The lashes, service, and staff have been nothing but amazing. I have tried getting my lashes done at other salons and this one is the best by far. Not only are the lashes full, but they always last long which for someone who workouts frequently says a lot. The process usually only takes and hour and you're in and out. I recommend Theory to everyone looking for great lash specialists and stylists.

Hi Uyen. I'm just writing this first of all sorry for yet another shut down. Ridiculous. The other thing I want you to know, is about my hair. I do in fact have a medical condition that is causing my hair loss, as well as the tangling. I was kind of embarrassed and shamed by you telling me I used to have such great hair. And then you even made me brush my own hair. While I paid you probably about 300 or 400 dollars, because I'm a sucker. You complained the whole time about how tired you were from your move the night before, while you seriously yanked foils out and couldn't brush my hair. My cardiologist said look up Prauluent 150 mg and come up with a plan to help me rather than shame me, Also, the way you treat your employee in front of clients is atrocious. So passive agreessive, Take a message, what did they say, you need to use your voice, blah blah blah I have employees and if I ever did that........Awful. People have feelings. If you have a situation take it away from your clients. Totally unprofessional. As is talking about someone's hair loss. I'm still hurting and came home in tears that day. Hope you take this to heart. I know you will probably find everything wrong with this, and that's ok. Seriously though, try not to embarrass someone with a problem, I felt awful and I have paid and paid not to have you do that,,,,,,

I was very nervous about getting extensions and could not believe how perfectly the color matched the color of my hair! They are beautiful and I wish I had done this years ago. Uyen is a genius with her craft.

I get my hair done by Laisa at Theory Hair Studio, she is Uyen's Assitant Stylist ! Uyen is the senior stylist and let me tell you watching Uyen do hair is something truly beautiful. She creates masterpieces and does it so quickly and effortlessly. She's extremely meticulous and she has a passion for hair and beauty and it truly shows. So her Assitant Stylist,Laisa, is nothing short of incredible ! She is a true prodigy of Uyen and pays amazing attention to detail. Laisa has done BabyLights on me twice now and both times I have left so happy with the results. Plus this salon has such a homey but chic vibe to it and the staff is so nice you can totally girl talk or play on your phone, do whatever you like it's always a good time at Theory !

I don't even know where to start. I booked highlights with Uyen for the first time and my appointment was yesterday. One look at my hair and with out flinching aswitched it to a full. I have gotten my hair done every 3-4 months for the past two years, always getting a partial, and no one told me how freaking awful the back of my hair was! Needless to say Uyen took care of me, staying at the salon until 10 PM and I couldn't be happier with the results! 1000 fools later, she is a magician! Update: After almost a year of coming to Uyen I can honestly say that I don't think I'll ever be able to go to anyone else. Not only did she save my hair (seriously, saved it), she is so much fun to talk to. If you're going to be spending 3+ hours with someone during an appointment, you want to enjoy being around them! I've lived in Orange County + San Diego for most of my life. This hair salon one of my absolute favorites. Very hip space with hip employees to match. I usually work with Emily. She does great highlights + cuts. She also does my extensions. I've always had a positive experience with her. Uyen is the owner + I go to her for lash extensions. I get a refill about every 3 weeks. Over all a top salon + I would highly recommend it.

I've seen numerous friends of mine have bad hair salon experiences. Therefore, I became cautioned with who touches my hair. Luckily, I was recommended to Uyen by two of my friends and have had an amazing hair transformation! I had dark brunette virgin hair and thanks to Uyen I have natural looking blonde hair. My hair is still soft and shiny and looks healthy. She gives great tips on how to care for your hair and shows great passion for what she does. Finding a hairstylist who takes her time with each client instead of trying to hurry the process to get another client in the chair is hard to come across. I admire how Uyen treats my hair as if it's a masterpiece. I highly recommend her to anyone and everyone!! (:

Finally I can share my experience with Uyen. I went there first time in November 2019 . I wanted to my hair extensions, reading the reviews I thought she is good to go with . Unfortunately it came out to be disaster. I went to her so she can see my hair and give me advice if my hair are good for the extensions, she said they are good and we should make an appointment. So I did ... she told me that I need 2 row but when she was doing them she just mentioned... we are gonna do 3 Instead of 2 . That's it , she didn't tell asked me if I want to do 3 or no , because of the $$$ , she wanted to make more not carrying about my hair . I was coming back for maintenance every 7-9 weeks , she never ever mentioned condition of my hair , I never ever saw my hair without the extensions, because she never took them off completely and put them back again , she removed one and put it back . I have called her in May and asked if she can do my hair , color and maintenance.she said yes , I thought she is gonna do it in her salon , but she did in her home (quarantine time , She not supposed to do it). Finally she removed all the extensions because she also was doing fully babylights, then I saw my hair for the first time in 8 months. I told her that I lost a lot of hair because of the extensions. She was quite. She as a professional hair stylist who care about her client supposed to say . Paulina , we should not put extension and not color your hair . You lost so many hair . But she was more worried about amount of money she was about to make that day . I removed my hair 2 weeks ago , I went to the professional hair stylist who does extensions for +20 years . She told me that the method she used was unprofessional .she did loops , tangles On my hair . She didn't know how to sew them properly. She also didn't color my hair in the back which I don't know till I removed the extensions, she charged me almost $300 for few babylights, my hair stylist was surprised how much she charged for babylights. I have contacted her and told everything. She refused everything telling me that I signed the release form.she asked me why I was coming back if I had a breakage I told her that I haven't seen my hair for 8 months, how am I supposed to know about my hair condition she never told me anything, she even told me to come back one more time because In her opinion my extension hair would be good for another 2 months. I'm here to warn you all , if you think about the extensions choose the right person, she is not good at all , because of her I lost 75% of my hair , I will post a pics before /after , and her application. She is the worst , I have already contacted the city about her working during COVID 19 , I would do everything so she can't do anybody's hair anymore !

I'm so happy I found Uyen and Theory Hair Studio! I've moved around a lot in the past few years, so I've probably been to at least twenty different stylists. Uyen is the first to be able to get my color exactly how I like it. For some reason, my hair seems to confound most stylists; they're never able to prevent it from turning brassy. Uyen has the magic touch! I also get extensions from Uyen, and I couldn't love them more. She uses extremely high quality materials, but it's her application of the extensions that truly impresses me. I know a lot of people with extensions end up with damaged hair, tangles, or bald spots...I haven't experienced any problems like that at all! Had a fantastic cut at Theory Hair Studio!! Uyen gives a stylish cut and keeps my hair looking flawless. I have wild woman curly hair that would happily stay a frizzy mess if left to its own devices. Uyen always knows how to take my crazy Extreme color and cut request to another level and makes it happen for me. She really does know her stuff and a consultation with her on your hair is priceless. You feel confidant in the outcome and being able to keep it up on your own. Great service by all the staff and a wonderful environment!!!

I redid my ombre after Uyen colored it for the first time over a year ago. I was surprised that my color lasted so long! We only lightened it once and toned it twice. When it grew out, it blended it seamlessly with my natural color. I was worried that my ombre would be hard to maintain, but Uyen did such a good job! This time, we lightened it just a little more. I am very happy with it! I just wanted to post a picture of it!

Uyen and her assistant, Laisa, are amazing at what they do. Whenever I show Uyen a photo of what I would like my hair to look like she does exactly that. She does the best highlights and hair cut I've ever had. I always schedule something last minute and she does her best to squeeze me in. We always have a great time chatting and catching up as well. I would recommend Uyen and Laisa a thousand times over. They truly do great work.

I couldn't say about all types of services here, but I definitely wouldn't recommend to do a coloring here. I have paid $125 for damaged hair. I ask to color it in copper and instead of copper have got just the bright red (absolutely unnatural color). I have explained and shown pictures what I wanted before coloring, but nothing helped. The other girl, who is showed up while I was there had white damaged hair instead of just bright tone. The specialist either don't know nothing about the coloring proses itself either is really bad in colors. And eventually made us both to pay for absolutely unprofessional service.( Too upset right now (((

I received a haircut from Uyen while visiting my friends about 6 months ago. Let's say that she really set the bar high because I felt that I no longer wanted anyone else to do my hair but her. I've actually put off getting anything done to my hair until I scheduled another visit to San Diego. This time, I decided I would like add color to my hair (this is a big deal because I haven't dyed my hair in about eleven years). I showed Uyen a picture and she not only matched it, she elevated the color and the cut to what looked amazing on me. Uyen has a perfect sized, chic space. It is clean, trendy, and fun! You are greeted with a glass of wine or water and lots of fun conversation. Uyen really takes her time with each and every client, making sure that she provides them with the best results. I was able to watch her do eyelashes as well, and it is definitely an art form. Every client left with a smile on their faces (including me). Even when she has people waiting, she doesn't rush through this service. It seemed that everyone that came in was a long time client, which doesn't surprise me, but it speaks to the excellent service. The pricing for the service and results you get is more than reasonable. It is definitely worth the guaranteed results. I am so sad that I live on the other coast, so I can't get trims here regularly, but for all you lucky west coasters, it is certainly achievable!

Theory Hair Studio is the only salon I trust with my hair. I went to Uyen about three years ago with dry, damaged hair, and she completely transformed it! I go in every 4-6 months for a Brazilian Blowout, and my hair has never looked better. The Blowout calms my hair for months and cuts my styling time to nearly nothing! Uyen takes the time to do things right and it definitely shows - her attention to detail is on another level. I highly recommend Theory Hair Studio!!

Laisa was magnificent! I came to Theory Salon for a color. I loved the warm feeling of the salon. Everyone was very friendly and knowledgeable. The Owner Uyen was excellent. Laisa took the time and care to make my hair perfectly blonde. I have long hair, so I understand that this can be a challenge. They offered me a fine glass of wine,-keeping in classy San Diego. I am extremely happy with the color. Reasonable prices and fabulous products. It is perfection! This is the BEST salon that I have been to in Little Italy. I have been going to Theory Hair Studio for the past two years and it has been transformative for my hair. I first came to Uyen for hair extensions after having a terrible haircut at a different salon just a few months before my wedding. After a consultation, she applied i-tip hair extensions which not only completely disguised the awful haircut I'd had but made my hair look better than it ever had in my life. I was initially concerned that having i-tip extensions would damage the health of my hair but over time my hair has actually grown stronger, as the extensions protect my natural hair from hot tools and stress. I highly recommend Uyen for her passion, professionalism, and attention to detail. The extensions she applies are so natural looking that no one questions that this is my natural hair!
