This was my first time at Thiam Hock Restaurant 添福餐馆 in Brunei.
Establised since 1989, it was touted as one of the best Chinese restaurant here, but some say that it's overrated. Let's see.
Their signature Curry Fish Head 咖哩鲜鱼头 was huge, and came piping hot with brinjahs, ladies fingers, and some tomatotes. It was very flavourful and fresh, but not spicy. At $45 for that portion, I felt that it's reasonable.
The 青龙菜炒豆芽 Dragon Leaf Vegetables Fried with Bean Sprouts was impeccably done. Not oily and very crunchy, $10.
We had their signature steamed chicken, a.k.a. Thiam Hock Special Crystal Chicken 金牌水晶鸡. The gravy was very nice, with a tinge of wine in it, and the chicken was very smooth. Half chicken costs $25.
The dish that won me over was their $10 Salted Egg Lotus Roots 咸蛋莲藕!It was cleverly done with thick, ample salted egg coating the thin, crispy lotus roots. We were so full, but still ate up every single piece.
Of all the noodles, I picked their XO Fried Glass Noodles & Vermicelli with seafood, XO炒冬粉与米粉 $7. Extremely tasty and with good wok hei, but I reckon it will be too flavourful, if one were to finish the whole plate.
The Homemade Special Toufu, 自制豆腐 $10, was very soft but crispy on the outside. There is minced pork with gravy all over the toufu as well.
Their tea and barley drinks were good.
In total, we paid $123 for 5 adults, which I believe is a reasonable price.
I have yet to try other dishes but this was indeed one of my best dining experience in Brunei in more than a decade. Pretty authentic Chinese food and several winning creations!
