Sometimes you walk into a place and just know it's right. So it is with The Thin White Duke, a converted monastery whose name is a doff of the cap to Mr Bowie. After a 12 mile walk along the Cumbrian coast this place had been recommended as a suitable place for restorative sustenance. On a cold, wet mid-week afternoon in November walk through the door and it was buzzing. A real mix - people after an afternoon's shopping, a family after school, a business meeting, 3 women on the champers and 3 soaking, tousle-haired walkers.
A couple of hand-pulled beers on the bar got things going followed by a small but appealing menu. Nothing fancy, mainly of the burger/casserole type but do it well and it can be rewarding. So it was here. The Duke burger topped with goats cheese, red onion chutney and accompanied with thick-cut chips was delicious. My friends' fish, chips and mushy peas was also consumed approvingly. Finish with the ubiquitous Sticky Toffee pudding and it made for a satisfying end to an excellent day.
If you're looking for a place with a nice, welcoming atmosphere and decent, homely food and drink you could do a lot worse. Highly recommended.
