We booked this knowing it was an older hotel, and typically in Malaysian style old= not well maintained/ decor is dated, but we expected that. That said, overall the service was good ( the pool guys/restaurant hosts were very friendly and smiley), and the overall hotel DOES have that "you are on HOLIDAY" vibe.
Pros:
1. Location: just near enough to the beach to be convenient, but not so close that you have nightmares of La Nina waves washing the hotel into the sea. Easy to locate, lots of parking.
2. The Resort Design: dated, but I appreciate the tiled hallways and rooms, which make more sense than moldy carpets in the Malaysian Weather. Has a mediterranean/tropical vibe. And it very much has that retro tropical resort vibe.
3. Price: higher than what the eventual service/room quality deserves, but it was lower than the ridiculous pricing of other luxury resorts nearby... Which means you may be able to afford upgrading to a suite which can make up for the oldness.
4. Pool /room /amenities: the way the hotel is laid out, most of the rooms will have a very nice view. They have a nice lounge with live music in the evening, a good sized resortlike pool (not just a boring rectangle), and kid friendly slides and gokarts. Pool toilet is quite clean, buffet is ok in terms of quality-selection-cleanliness. The hotel is just the right size, not too cramped but also not so huge little kids will fall asleep on the way to the pool.
TO BE IMPROVED
I felt there were lots of little things that could be improved to make the stay more pleasant and worth the supposed "5 star rating" that didnt require huge renovations, and a lot of it was down to details.
1. We booked the suite: both the shower fixtures and bath fixtures were so rickety it was about to fall off the wall. The wall hook fell off, the foyer light died on the first day, the ancient beige hairdryer that looked like it was from the 80s died on the second day... Disappointing esp in a suite that is supposed to be the more premium offering.
2. Towels were very thin and fraying.... I would expect this from a random shoplot hotel, not a supposed 5 star resort.
3. Room service was spotty, we had to request manually. Again, i forgive cheaper hotels for doing the "eco, don't wash towels" thing, but not from a suite in a 5 star resort. Isn't the whole point of booking a nice hotel is to come back to tidy cleaned up room after a long day out?
4. The seating in the bedroom could've done with some steam cleaning, because it looked disgusting. Stained beige upholstery.
5. Lots of little bits of litter and random bits of construction rubble around the compound really brought the vibe down. Again easily sorted, but not done.
6. One of the wait staff in the restaurant struggled with basic english for answering simple questions about the menu. Not a great experience since a resort is trying to appeal to tourists of all sorts?
7. The "kids play room" was quite sad, run down/grungy and bits of random plastic toys. I wouldn't even advertise this as a facility in this state, as it is more an embarrassment than a bonus.
Overall we enjoyed our stay though, and i Hope management takes notes to fix these little things that would significantly improve the experience and make it worth the money.
