17 Places to Hunt for Aliens Besides Area 51

"Cars are not allowed to drive over the covered bridge in Sheffield, Massachusetts, anymore. Part of the reason may have to do with what happened there on September 1st, 1969, when a station wagon met a UFO. The 1969 event was not Thom Reed’s first bizarre encounter, but it was the most verifiable. Not only did he and his family encounter the UFO that night, but witnesses in four surrounding towns also reported seeing it. Those witnesses, though, did not have as close an encounter as Reed’s family. According to Reed, after crossing the bridge, he and his mother, grandmother, and brother saw a bright light rise out of the water of the Housatonic River. They were taken, mysteriously, from their car to what appeared to be an airplane hanger, where they saw creatures that resembled large insects. He was separated from his mother and grandmother and taken to a strange room, though he could hear them calling for him. Then, just as suddenly, they were all back in the car. Forty people reported strange lights and a saucer-like object in the sky to a local radio station that night, and when Reed took a polygraph test he was found to be 99.1% truthful. For this reason, the Great Barrington Historical Society voted 6-3 to recognize the encounter as “historically significant and true.” It was the first time a UFO encounter has had this kind of recognition. A 5,000-pound granite monument, with a plaque commemorating “our nation’s first off-world/UFO incident” was placed near the covered bridge where the encounter took place. A few solar lampposts and a couple of benches later joined it. Not everyone in town is thrilled to be known for such a thing, but Reed feels validated by the historical society and the state historians and governor who also officially recognized the encounter as historical, something very few UFO witnesses ever get to feel. Update June 2019: The monument was removed from the site by the town of Sheffield after squabbles between Reed and the town’s select board over the legality of the monument. Reed is currently pursuing his legal options. Update July 2021: The granite monument has been replaced with a sign from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, signed in by Governor Charlie Baker." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

USE DIRECTIONS TO HISTORIC UPPER SHEFFIELD COVERED BRIDGE across the bridge to avoid a dirt road in very poor condition! Interesting but didn't see any aliens. Pretty spot along the Housatonic River with a covered bridge.

Nice road side stop. Parking is on the Rt. 7 side. Very well maintained area along the river with benches. Beautiful covered bridge. Great place to launch a kayak or do some shore fishing. Interesting UFO incident from 1969. The Roswell of Massachusetts.

Nice spot to relax or have a picnic. Not many seating area in the shade, so on hot days bring something to sit on and find shade under one of the trees. There is a parking lot on the west side of the bridge.

Tucked away, just off the main road leading into Sheffield, you'll find a beautiful covered bridge. The bridge is closed to vehicle traffic, so there's a medium sized parking lot beside the river. There are benches to sit and watch the river flow. Enjoy a nice walk or a picnic.

A very cool UFO themed park that sits next to a restored 1854 wooden bridge. The bridge is open to pedestrian traffic only. Lots of room to roam around, ample picnic tables and across the street from an ice cream place.

Google
4.5 stars because it’s very beautiful there. Covered bridge is lovely, unfortunately it’s not the original. Park would be great for paddle boarding and maybe even a picnic.

Yelp
"We're dying to be invaded Waiting for the UFOs Waiting for the UFOs We are waiting for the UFOs We know that they're there" (Graham Parker) Did a series of UFO's appear in the skies over Sheffield, Massachusetts in 1969? Did over 250 people see a disc-shaped white orb bigger than a football field hover in the sky over Sheffield's covered bridge? Did the Reed family have their car engulfed in light as they were pulled into the UFO? Did the family take a polygraph test found to be 99.1% truthful? Could this have been one of the most-seen UFO incidents in history? The Great Barrington Historical Society, Massachusetts governor, and Massachusetts historians seem to agree that all this happened, and there is a park in Sheffield commemorating that event. The Thom Reed - UFO Monument Park was founded in 2015 on the banks of the Housatonic River by the town of Sheffield where Thom Reed's off-world incident was said to have occurred. A sign reads "On behalf of the citizens of Commonwealth of Massachusetts, I am pleased to confer upon you this Governor's citation in recognition of the off-world incident on September 1, 1969, which engaged the Reed family, which has been established. Your dedicated service to this incident was factually upheld, founded, and deemed historically significant and true by means of Massachusetts historians. The records highlighting the historic event are now officially part of the Great Barrington, MA Historical Society's collection and your recent induction into Massachusetts history." There are benches scattered along the park waterfront, and many have sponsorship plaques from the media sources (Netflix, Travel Channel, Discovery Channel, History Channel, Discovery Science, International UFO Museum in Roswell) that have publicized the story on TV shows like Ancient Aliens and Unsolved Mysteries. What say you?

Yelp
Don't bother - The Place Doesn't Exist...As least not at the address shown here. Made the final left - almost ran into a tractor on a dirt road. Call Mars...

Yelp
"A Powerful Ambience" A magnificent covered bridge with some donated benches by Unsolved Mysteries and the Travel Channel. It's a stylish little park, with a heavy ambience.

Yelp
Numerous TV shows were filmed right here. There's also a number of celebrity sponsored benches. Many said they were disheartened by the abrupt removal of the Monument by the (bias) Selectmen. The Monument was an official landmark, and the centerpiece for the towns newfound history. But there is a lot to see, like the new entrance sign donated by Tvs Ancient Aliens, celebrity sponsored benches and the old covered Bridge. The area is a UFO hotspot, as sightings of Spheres, Crop Circles and Cattle Mutilations are fairly common. Expect to see dogs on leashes, kayakers and visitors from out of state. There are no restrooms, but there is a restaurant within walking distance. www.ufopark.org (Reed's website)
