Thon Hotel Opera (Oslo, Norway) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Set on the doorstep of the National Library and the Opera House, this imposing hotel has a subtle theatrical theme both in its décor and the naming of its rooms. Bedrooms come in warm colours; ask for one at the front with a balcony. The Scala restaurant uses Norwegian produce in international recipes." - Tablet Hotels

Perfect hotel for an Oslo mini break. Moments from the central railway station, the water's edge, the Opera House and the Munch Museum. Easy walk to everywhere else in the city centre. Staff were all pleasant and efficient. Room was spacious, warm and well-equipped. Breakfast was superb. Recommend.

I've come to the conclusion that my hopes for this hotel were simply too high. Two designated places for a glass, but no actual glass in the bathroom, so I decadently rinsed the toothpaste out of my mouth using the wine glass from the minibar. Empty toilet paper roll on the holder: luckily there was a spare, which wasn't replaced so I had to be careful not to run out of paper during the day. No safe in the room. One of those 'hair-body-everything-wash' dispensers in the shower, where from a hotel of this standard I somehow expected a lovely shampoo-conditioner-body wash trio. There was party music either in the hotel or close by: I heard but mostly felt it in my room in vibrations, every night past 11pm. These are minor things, but attention to detail is what lifts a hotel from good to great. Furthermore, the experience of commonly available things missing while others being very visibly available for an extra fee kind of rubbed me in the wrong way. It made the hotel look like a cheap holiday where you have to pay extra for everything, and I don't think that's the look this hotel is going for. Was it bad? No, it was 'okay'. But I aimed for 'wonderful' on this trip, so it was just not a great fit for me.

Stayed here for a few nights recently and the hotel was lovely. Very central to everything and in walking distance to most things. The hotel has a restaurant downstairs with a bar so very handy after a long day of walking around the city. |Friendly staff and lovely clean rooms with nice view over the city.|Close to train station too.|Would recommend if staying in Oslo.

Google
Great hotel in the centre of Oslo, right next to the train station. The reception team were extremely friendly and helpful, Melissa checked us in to a wonderfully refurbished room. Although a large hotel, it feels very personable because of the friendliness of the staff and the new rooms were very well appointed!! Looking forward to a return stay in a few days time!!!

Google
Great location. Literally next to the Oslo Train station. Even if you are arriving by cruise, the hotel is a short taxi / Uber ride away. Will suggest to use Uber which is probably cheaper. Breakfast spread was great as well though they only start breakfast at 7am.

Google
We stayed in the newly renovated part of the hotel in a lovely, bright big room, one of the biggest we’ve had in Scandinavia.|Bathroom was excellent, but the ongoing renovations meant there were jackhammers thundering into our room until 6PM, even on a weekend. The noise was horrific and drove us from the hotel until it finished. |The included breakfast buffet was superb, with a great range of cereal, baked goods, hot dishes, fruit, cheese, tea coffee etc, and even a dedicated gluten free section.|Check if renovations have finished before booking - if they have this is an excellent hotel in a good location closer to the Opera House and harbour.

Google
Excellent location, just walk out from Oslo station and you can see the hotel and have access to the hotel’s level 2 directly. Easy access to airport. Arrived late at night. Check in process was efficient. Staff was polite and offered me a free bottled mineral water which was a kind gesture as the waters/drinks in mini fridge are chargeable. Small compact room but sufficient. Kettle and steam iron available in the room which are very useful. The room is too cold for me though, I think it is around 20-21degC, I tried to adjust temperature to be warmer to 24degC but it was not possible. The restaurant staff are polite and friendly especially the staff at restaurant reception. Good breakfast, plenty of choices, particularly I like the fresh juice/smoothies. Overall a comfortable stay and recommended.

Google
This is a 3 star hotel aimed at tour groups. The rooms are very small and smell of cigarettes. The carpet was dirty. Everything was dated and felt like a 70s motel room.||The location is great. But there are also plenty of modern and brand name hotels in the area.

Yelp
We stayed here for two nights and enjoyed. The location is right next to Oslo Central Station and the Opera House, walkable to most sites and transit stations. Check-in was smooth, and the staff were friendly and efficient. The room was clean, comfortable, and stylish, though on the smaller side. A/C was weak, and rooms aren't refreshed or restocked unless requested. One notable element was the breakfast. It is one of the most comprehensive I've seen at a hotel. From fresh pastries and hot dishes to Norwegian specialties and vegan options, it had everything, even individual packets of Omega-3's. Overall, a well-located, stylish and modern hotel with standout breakfast. I'd definitely stay again.

Yelp
Review for thon Lovely hotel in a very convenient spot in central downtown Oslo. Rooms was spacious and loved having a bathtub with separate shower Unfortunately, the entire experience the following morning makes me never want to return to any Thon property (which there are many) At the buffet breakfast, I made a small open face sandwich of the bread and sliced meat left over. As we were sitting and having a chat with the table next door, a waiter came over and aggressively said "You have to pay for that!" He repeated himself several times as he put his face into mine Wow! I can understand a policy that asks guests to pay for buffet items that leave the dining room. However, this waiter named William from Norway basically attacked me verbally and was suggesting that I would "steal" the bread???? It was actually appalling as he continued to look at me in the dining room each time he passed I did ask him where I should go to make the adjustment to our bill. He gleefully pointed to the coffee bar Wow! We had a glorious trip in Norway, which ended with an aggressive confrontation at breakfast???? Dear Thon Opera Hotel Please train your staff to at least politely make a request of a guest. I have worked in hospitality for over 35 years and was always reminded that guests were to be treated with some civility I do hope you can talk to Mr William from Norway and perhaps train him to act In acourteous manner when something is needed. We will never use this hotel again, and I am not thrilled to use any of the chain if this is the city center experience.

Yelp
What a lovely hotel! We are ending our 3 week journey with a couple of nights at this hotel and it's perfect! It's right across the street from the opera house, Munch museum and the fjord. Right next to central train station too so it's the perfect location. Rooms are nicely appointed with plenty of space and comfortable beds. The complimentary breakfast is one of the best in all of Norway, Sweden and Finland that I've had. It's a 10/10 for certain. There is a fancy Nespresso coffee machine that has plenty of drink options. I would have been happy with just that but the food was outstanding too. It's a bit pricey to stay here but that's Norway for you.

Yelp
It's been a while since any hotel exceeded my expectations but Thon hotel took the prize this time. Chose this hotel mainly due to its proximity to the central train station (right next door) but it has so much more than just location in its favor (you can pretty much walk to all the main sights from here). We had one of the standard twin rooms which is not big but comfortable. Well appointed with posh wallpaper and padded headboard, 2 comfortable armchairs, electric kettle and real mugs and glasses for tea and coffee. Being quite a large hotel it's also got a fabulous lobby and spacious public areas with lots of seating. Breakfast (included in our room) is amazing with one of the best and abundant selections of hot and cold dishes (4 different types of eggs - and the only hotel I've seen that offers ready perfectly soft boiled eggs). Only thing I found a bit strange is the door doesn't lock instantly upon closing - it takes a minute - but you can override that by tapping your key. Good security - you have to tap you key for guest room floors and secure luggage storage. Will definitely stay here again next time I'm in Oslo.

Yelp
Nice hotel right across the street from the Opera Houses(hence the name of the hotel) and across from the waterfront. They actually get an extra star for the location as well. There are two entrances and one is across the street from the train station. There are also legions of taxis as well. The lower lobby area is where the front desks are and it is spacious and open as well. There was a restaurant/bar there as well though I didn't eat there. There are conference rooms here as well and there was one going on during my stay so it was busy. There's an outdoor patio area as well which is a great place to watch the waterfront area. The rooms are cozy and comfortable. Not big but they maximize the space in the room so it's nice. The beds were comfortable as well.

Yelp
This is a beautiful hotel close to the Oslo opera house. You need to be on the top floor to get a view. Lobby is modern and contemporary. Rooms are 2 stars. Carpet in room and hallways are worn and need replaced. The hotel feels tired and old. Management is 1/2 stars. This hotel has the unusual policy of if you do not cancel your reservation within 24 hours of making it, you don't get a refund. When you do cancel over the internet, they do not honor it. There are nicer and consumer friendly hotels hotels in and around Oslo to choose. I recommend staying away from this one.

Yelp
We are staying two nights in Oslo and picked the Thon Hotel Opera because of its location near the train from Oslo Airport. The place has higher end prices at $390 per night and very very low end environment. Rooms are small. They were having a heat wave and there's no air conditioning in the room. When I tried calling the front desk it just rang and rang for six minutes. So I send downstairs to speak with the front desk and they confirmed that the do not have A/C. No option to switch to a room on the shady side of the hotel. He suggested we open a window. After some negotiation he offered a fan be brought to our room. The hotel is next to the noisy trams, it's old, fun down with long lines for any possible service and the place stinks. Do not stay in this dump

Yelp
The Thon Hotel Opera in Oslo is conveniently located near the main train station and is within easy walking distance of the pedestrians-only shopping street. They offer a morning breakfast buffet in the building, with a wide variety of items. We enjoyed the breakfast very much. Our room was comfortable and clean. The porters delivered our luggage promptly upon both arrival and departure. My only complaint was: The tub is too high, for short people to climb out of, the highest tub EVER seen! A Norwegian tall men invention? Overall, I think you will enjoy your stay.

Yelp
Can't say enough about this hotel. For the price, it's an absolute gem! You could not possibly find a more convenient location - it's literally just outside the Oslo central station, and immediately across the street from the start of the walk to Karl Johans gate. You can also see the opera house from inside the glass elevators in the lobby, it's that close! Our room was really nicely decorated, and very well laid out to maximize the small space. I was in LOVE with the nice deep bath! Great water pressure and nice hot water temps too. And the bed - ugh, that bed was SO comfortable. I slept like a coma patient! We selected a view room, and had a very nice view looking back toward the train station. Lastly - the included breakfast was an absolute delight. It was HUGE! Many hot stations with made to order items and just an outstanding assortment of breads, fruit, cheese, smoked meats and fish, and cereals, just to name a few items. I was so impressed with the breakfast! We loved this hotel so much that we just canceled our next stay in Oslo and booked a second stay at this hotel. What more can I say?? We really loved it!

Yelp
My rating would actually probably be a 3.5 if that were possible. During a month long trek through Europe, this has been the most "corporate" of the hotels. It is very large, clean, modern, has a decently populated bar, and the staff was friendly and professional, without going above and beyond. The room I had was exceptionally small (it was essentially a twin bed and a bathroom), which likely accounts for why I'm not giving this 4 stars. It's the smallest room, by far, of any that I've stayed in. It also, however, accounts for why the price was very reasonable (especially for a city that has a reputation for being very expensive). The location was nice. It's very close to the water, right next to the Opera House, a couple blocks from the city center with numerous bars/restaurants, and within walking distance (20 minutes or less) of many of the Oslo sights that aren't on the bygdoy side (the Akershus Fortress, the Munch Museum, the Natural History Museum/Botanical Gardens, etc). Overall, I would recommend it, especially for the price. I put a premium on the quality/size of the room, however, and this left a lot to be desired (although it was clean). So, I can't quite give it 4 or 5 stars.

Yelp
This hotel is set in a great location. It is literally a 3 minute walk from the train station, a station which serves the airport in less than half an hour. The hotel has, currently, an unrestricted view of the Oslo Opera house (see what they did with the name if the hotel!!) however this unrestricted view will change come 2017 (I think it was 2017 might be 16) as they are building a new library right in front of the hotel, so if you are planning on going to Oslo and want a hotel with a view this is the one but only until the library is completed. The rooms are ok, I think this hotel is more of a business/conferencing one. They also have a massive (in the time I was there) turn over of coach parties coming and going so the hotel is never quite!! I had a single room which was very cosy and not big enough to swing a cat in but for my needs it was ok. I did notice from the outside they have some roof top rooms with balconies which (I assume) must be bigger so if you want the ultimate view that's the floor for you. The hotel provide buffett service for breakfast and dinner, there is no lunch time service although you can get open sandwiches from the bar. In the evening the resturant does have a menu service which has the usual features, burgars, steak and salads of various descriptions. The bar area is situated in the lobby area, so if you have time to people watch its a good location. They offer free wifi throughout the hotel and I didn't experience any drop out in the signal. So if you are in need of a hotel in Oslo for business this could be the one, if you need one for a night and quick access to the airport this could be the one, if you need a hotel with a car park this is not the one. There is a car park next door but it is not associated with the hotel.

Yelp
We flew into Oslo to spend one night and then took the train to Bergen. This is a very good hotel! It is right beside the train station so no cab necessary. Check in was easy and everyone was very friendly. They have a great breakfast buffet and we had a nice view from out patio. You can't go wrong with this place!!

Yelp
This is like any other metropolitan business hotel. It has a nice bar, fitness center and the rooms were nicely appointed. I even used the gym. Absolutely no complaints from me. It was 2295 per night for my parents and I. I was really quite happy and it was conveniently located to the train that took us to our relatives second home in Molde.

Yelp
Of the three Scandinavian hotels we stayed at, this one had the worst service. We thought that the hotel staff was short, not very helpful, and seemed overworked and therefore irritated. We asked if there were any newly remodeled rooms available, but unfortunately there weren't. We were given an older room that had a nice view of the New Opera building. The decor seemed to be from the early 90s and definitely needs an update, but it was clean and roomy. Pros: huge bathroom. Largest bathroom of the 3 hotels we stayed at by far. Also the hotel's location was great since it was right across the street from Oslo S which makes it easy to get around the city (T-Bane, Tram, Bus) and also to and from the airport. Cons: construction all around the hotel was noisy and distracting. Since this was the most expensive hotel that we were staying at, we were not really expecting the construction and frankly, I think the prices should be lowered accordingly, especially given the fact that the service was not up to par. The breakfast buffet was pretty good with a lot of different options and a good variety. It would have been nice to see different foods on different days since we were there for 5 days, but overall it was a pleasant experience.

Yelp
This was the perfect place to unwind and refresh ourselves after many days of travel. The room was very comfortable and clean. Every thing I needed was waiting for me including extra towels and a fluffy bath robe. The staff was attentive and helpful with all of our questions and needs. Breakfast was plentiful and offered a large variety of choices for any palate. Location can't be beat!

Yelp
Read the fine print. After seeing the great reviews online, I was excited for my stay at the hotel for a night in Oslo and a few nights in Bergen. Unfortunately, I had a very serious medical emergency at the airport on my way to Norway, and I was unable to make my reservation because I had to be rushed to the ER. If you book the hotel through a third party site, like Expedia, you won't receive any refund for cancelling without traveler's insurance. Given the extraordinary circumstances of my particular situation, I was hoping the booking consultant, Susanne Holst, might be accommodating and make an exception, but unfortunately she wasn't and didn't. Afterwards, I decided not to book Thon while in Bergen. This hotel sticks to the rule book, so plan accordingly.

Yelp
Ok, so we didn't know our room came with a breakfast buffet (we're not big breakfast at the hotel kind of people) but OH MY GOD!!! It was amazing. The fresh strawberry jam had whole strawberries in it, the salmon was fresh, the orange juice was fresh squeezed!!! A whole lot of "fresh" going on here. Buffet aside, I really liked this hotel. The location was good -- right next to the train station (most of Oslo is walk-able from here), everyone at the front desk was so helpful, and the views over the Opera House/bay were beautiful. And the bathroom had a heated floor so considering we were here in cold December -- that was a nice touch. I'm not sure I'll ever make it back to Oslo again but if I did, I would stay here for the strawberry jam alone.

Yelp
So convenient to the Express train from the Oslo airport!! Gotta get away from hotel to find some hidden gems of restaurants, but convenient and easy access to shopping!
