6 Best Safari-and-Beach Holidays, From Madagascar to Mozambique | Condé Nast Traveler

"Discreetly tucked into the coastal forest canopy within iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Thonga is the only lodge on a nearly footprintless 45-mile beach, offering green forest tunnels, organized activities from paddling Lake Sibaya to turtle-nesting experiences, though the sea can be rough and snorkeling is best in rock pools or as part of open-ocean expeditions." - Pippa de Bruyn

Thonga Beach Lodge, iSimangaliso, Maputaland, South Africa - Explore & Book

"This is surely one of the most spectacular and unique beach lodges in all of Africa. It's tucked away on the furthest coast of Kwazulu-Natal, in Maputaland (which you may have heard of), and more precisely in iSimangaliso Nature Reserve (which you probably haven't, but you should). Getting there is not for the faint hearted, but it's all part of the adventure: a 4- to 5-hour drive from Durban, then a 1-hour jeep transfer along sandy tracks to the lodge, which is set deep in dune forests above the endless sands of Mabibi beach. You’re actually nearer to Mozambique than to Jo'burg, but don't let that put you off. On the contrary: with two pools, a dive centre, a blissful spa, and a superb al fresco restaurant and bar, you’ll not want for creature comforts here. Accommodation is in 12 spacious circular thatched suites dotted in the woods, with canopied kingsize beds, private balconies (some ocean-facing), and big ensuite bathrooms. Outside, nature awaits. Go snorkelling among fire fish, scuba diving in coral reefs, whale watching from inflatable boats, turtle tracking by night, kayaking or bird watching on shimmering Lake Sibaya (with the possible bonus of hippos and crocs). It's all run - with smiling staff and outstanding service - by Isibindi, the team behind Kosi Forest Lodge (which, at two hours’ drive away, is one of your nearer neighbours). Put it on your bucket list; or better still, carpe diem and go now. Highs Great for outdoorsy couples, friends and families alike: you can request twin beds, family suites or a honeymoon hideaway with its own plunge poolWe love how immersed it is in the environment, with marine conservation projects, well-trained local staff and brilliant bird guidesThe sandy beach is totally undeveloped, with pristine reefs, lush dune forests - and no hotels within 60 milesWe hear the food is divine and fresh, especially given the far-flung locationProbably South Africa's top diving spot, with equipment and training available, and plenty for snorkellers, too Lows It's remote, so expect long journeys in and out, no mobile coverage and patchy WiFiBeing a coastal wetland, there is some rain (and, on summer afternoons, possible thunderstorms)This is a low-risk malaria area - but all beds have mosquito netsMany activities are not suitable for children under 8It's not cheap - but when you consider that all meals and some activities are included, we think it's very fair value" - Handpicked by our hotel experts

Our family ended our trip to South Africa with a 3 night stay at Thonga Lodge. This was one of the most amazing places we have ever stayed! The natural beauty is STUNNING. We snorkeled and also did the ocean "safari"--it was incredible! We saw fish and other marine life in the reef and on our boat trip we saw over 20 whales as well as dolphins. It was a wonderful time of year to visit: no bugs and cool evenings, but warm enough to swim during the day in the pool and ocean, and sit on the beach! Our family deluxe cottage had an amazing view of the ocean and was completely private; the accommodations are wonderful! As for the staff, I really can't speak highly enough--from the moment we arrived the staff took great care of us. The food and drink are also great (and there are kid options for each meal). We also loved learning about the nearby community and Thonga's commitment to benefitting the people who live nearby. A couple of tips: don't come to Thonga if you want to live on your phone and computer--yes, you can get some access but it is delightfully remote and the coverage is spotty (we LOVED this aspect of our stay!); don't try to drive the sandy road out to the lodge if you don't have a 4x4 vehicle--let Thonga arrange a driver for you (both our drivers were awesome and the pick up location has a cafe with coffee and food!).

Exceptional! Remote and luxurious. Adventure begins at pick up with a 4WD over coastal dunes. Diving and ocean experience so rewarding with humpback whale sightings and swimming with a dolphin pod. The vast beach is pristine. Renowned chef Nomazulu Ndlovu cooks the most tasty and elegantly presented food. Staff from local village knowledgable friendly and welcoming. Village tour and evening scorpion tour a must! Such a treat to stay here! Thank you!

A Dream Getaway by the Sea Our stay at Tonga Beach Lodge was absolutely wonderful! We visited as a family and felt at home from the very first moment. The location right on the beach is truly breathtaking – soft sand, turquoise water, and complete tranquility. The lodge itself is cozy, well-maintained, and very inviting. The staff were warm, attentive, and always made us feel welcome. What we loved most was the beach: long walks, swimming, and simply enjoying the sound of the ocean – pure relaxation! A perfect place for families to unwind, enjoy nature, and create unforgettable memories together. We will definitely be back!

We stayed for 4 nights at the magical Thonga beach lodge. After an explanation of how the lodge works we were led to our gorgeously decorated thatched room with Monkeys gambling outside. During the days we were there we completely decompressed from a hectic few weeks of Safaris. The food was fantastic, breakfast and lunch our favourites, we spent our days walking on the beach and dunes( we felt like Robinson Crusoe), sunset cocktails at the enormous freshwater lake, and forest walks, and of course relaxing at the various lovely subnets .Staff were universally friendly and welcoming, the room large and spotless, perfect. Be aware if you want to snorkel or swim its tide and weather dependent, we were not able to due to a neep tide,

The Thonga staff were amazing and made our honeymoon very special. The location is phenomenal with interesting activity options. We went at spring low which was brilliant for snorkeling. The food was outstanding. Huge thanks to Thonga staff

This was an excellent place to stay. The staff were efficient but very friendly. The food was top rate. The rooms were very good with stunning views, including constantly spouting and breaching wales. The beach was fantastic with only the small contingent of the hotel guests ever on it.

We drove all the way from Sodwana Bay - just to be told… no day visitors allowed. We tried to make the best of the off-road 4x4 roadtrip. I would not recommend the venue at all.

We had an amazing 3 days at Thonga Beach Lodge. An unforgettable experience. ||The food and service were outstanding.||Very spacious, clean room with all of the amenities that were required.||We had transfers from Sodwana Bay which were timely and prompt.||Did two of the complementary activities which were great.||Intending to do many more on our next visit.
