Nice place, quiet and peaceful. The first burial in Thornrose occurred in 1853. It is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country. Combining history with beautiful landscape

This is one of my favorite places in town, the residents here have the best attitudes around. Can't say the same about the living ones here though. I love visiting and having good conversations and nobody as me what I do for a living it why I'm in Staunton. Local folks could learn so much decency from the people and history here. Rarely do I see anyone enjoying the grounds, which is ok with me. I hope you enjoy the pictures I've shared and take the time to visit and pay your own respects to the tenants.

Yelp
Hello from the other side... No bones about it, this is the most impressive, historic cemetery I've ever visited. The massive stone arch entrance to this majestic resting place will leave you in awe. We took a driving tour through the beautifully designed landscaped grounds and oftentimes had to park and walk around get a closer look at some of the statues, monuments and tombs. Dedicated in 1853, this graveyard inters about 1,700 Civil War Confederate soldiers in one area with a huge Italian marble statue as its centerpiece. Thousands of more graves create a sea of headstones, rows of not forgotten souls. In another area an old stone bridge with a turret and a "guardian angel" statue keeping watch over the cemetery not only adds architectural appeal, but makes for peaceful spot to rest and reflect. The lush, green grounds and manicured bushes marked with ancient trees provides serene surroundings as you meander through the rows of gravestones and markers. The rolling hills make for gorgeous views and would make this cemetery an ideal final destination for loved ones. It surprised us to find discover that one of my friend's relatives is buried here. We visited a mausoleum with its wrought iron gates and antique locks, and several vaults. Pensively, we toured this remarkably ornate cemetery which would intrigue history buffs as well as Civil War buffs or architectural lovers. Thornrose Cemetery is available for tours by a local historical society as well. You may have to "urn" you keep while visiting this somber but gorgeous site, but it's well worth it!
