Sri Lanka Has a New Walking Trail With Wild Forests and Centuries-old Wellness Retreats — What to Know

"A seven-suite retreat in Haputale set on manicured grounds with an infinity pool and expansive views of mist-shrouded tea hills; historically significant as the place where Thomas Lipton began his tea empire, it offers intimate evenings by a fire and immersive encounters with local land stewardship practices such as controlled burning of small patches to manage the landscape." - Erin Vivid Riley

What a wonderful place to stay when visiting the tea fields. Our room was fabulous & the combine public lounge areas of old style English character were great. We loved eating our meals in the dining room on the long table chatting to other travellers. The staff are always on hand willing to help. Also great food & drinks. Loved our stay.

Our stay at Thotalagala was absolutely fantastic. The level of detail and care shown by the staff is truly remarkable — we travel extensively around the world and it's hard to imagine finding anything quite like this. The service was outstanding in every way, warm, attentive, and personalized. The suite was spacious and beautifully appointed, with every detail thoughtfully considered. Meals were generous, varied, and delicious. And the garden, along with the stunning pool, were simply incredible. A perfect blend of elegance, comfort, and nature. Highly recommended!

We just had a wonderful two night stay. The setting is truly stunning, the house is well maintained and characterful, and the food and beverages were excellent. Our butler Vinoth was incredibly helpful, professional, and friendly, and the naturalist Madu who took us through the tea plantations was also excellent.

We stayed here for 3 nights hiring the whole bungalow for our party. It was the most amazing part of our stay in Sri Lanka and will long live in our memories. We were greeted with hot chocolates (nice touch), and the staff including the waiters and chef were attentive and friendly. The food was exceptional and we were treated to a cookery session and enjoyed high tea one afternoon. The location is simply stunning! There are walks available by the guide including early morning birding and an infinity pool looking over the valley. You can literally dine on the veranda looking down at the clouds. The bungalow is beautifully decorated, super clean, spacious and comes with all modern amenities. The individual rooms are unique and very comfortable. Just a wonderfully luxurious leg of our tour. Exceptional Thotalagala!

We enjoyed an exceptional stay at Thotalagala. From the moment we arrived, we were amazed by the property, it’s a beautifully restored plantation bungalow with breathtaking views. Special thanks to the resort manager, Seshaya, who went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfectly organized. We also want to thank the two butlers, Kanth and Janaka, for their wonderful service during our stay. The food at Thotalagala was outstanding. They even catered to a special request we made in terms of food. We would definitely recommend this property to anyone visiting Haputale!

Thotalagala is a hidden gem in Haputale, and our stay was unforgettable. A heartfelt thank you to Manager Sheshaya, who made us feel completely at home with her care and warmth. A special mention also to Madumal, who guided us on a beautiful 4km evening walk around the bungalow — with birdwatching along the way. It was such a peaceful and memorable experience for both me and my daughter.||The butlers and all the staff were exceptional — always kind, attentive, and genuinely caring. The food was amazing, the bungalow was cozy yet luxurious, and the views over the tea country were absolutely stunning. Both my daughter and I loved every detail of our stay. We will definitely visit again! 💛

If there were a way to give a place six stars, I would give this seven. The private, secluded location is like pulling onto a celebrity's 1900's estate. You are immediately welcomed by immaculate, thoughtful, diverse landscaping and a charming homey entryway. The sitting rooms are calm and perfect for reading or napping. The porches are the perfect temperature for dining outside but they build a pitch started fire to add to the ambience. All of the food is fresh, well-seasoned, thoughtfully portioned and selected from a nicely curated but diverse menu focused on local ingredients prepared to meet any taste. The host is wonderfully charming and a terrific conversationalist. The star of the show for us is Janaka. I don't know his title but he may be a sommelier. For us, he crafted over a dozen cocktails and cocktails, each as tasty and well-balanced as can be, but also presented with an elegant, quiet style that would make us return tomorrow.
