On the Grid : La Mouette

"Classical French cuisine with a modern twist, this restaurant is not afraid to mix it up, so you can expect some very inventive (but always delicious) dishes. In summer, the courtyard is set up for people to enjoy dinner under the stars. In winter the fires inside are always roaring and the fact that there are plenty corners to get cozy in make this venue perfect for winter romance." - Brand New Creative

The atmosphere here is awesome! The place is very lively and has lots of seating. Seating includes tables and bar seating. We didn’t wait any time to be seated and our order came out in a timely manner. The sushi is excellent! Highly recommend getting a roll or two. The ramen is also good and is a decent portion. Our view was at the window and we were able to people watch while we enjoyed our meal. Food is flavorful and piping hot. Our only issue was our server tried to be sneaky and add money on at the end when we were being rang out. She tried to add way, way more to the bill and I only caught on when comparing the prices to the menu. She then got mad when we called that out. Enjoy the food and drinks but be careful when checking out and make sure the amount is correct.

Tucked away in Cape Town, this intimate ramen bar might just serve the city’s finest bowl. The atmosphere is warm and understated, with a quiet authenticity that instantly evokes a corner of Tokyo. The space is small and unpretentious, yet every detail feels deliberate, lending it a charm that is both refined and inviting. The ramen arrives as a feast for the senses: a bowl brimming with colour — golden broth, vibrant greens, rich slices of pork, and jewel-bright garnishes — as beautiful to behold as it is to taste. Each spoonful balances precision and soul, transforming humble ingredients into something memorable. Dining here is not merely a meal but a moment of calm, transporting and restorative in equal measure.

Yet to find a better ramen restaurant in Cape Town! Top if off with the excellent service, subdued lighting, warm atmosphere and you’re in for a treat, before we even get to the menu The ramen pulls the crowds but their Yakimono offerings and their starter menu shouldn’t be ignored. The flank steak with asparagus is good enough to make you want to skip your main completely and order a second round. Very tender meat, sweet sesame tare and a very subtle infusion of chilly. I also enjoyed the tuna tataki. Their ponzu sauce is quite acidic, and I didn’t really taste the usual sweetness of mirin, which was perfectly fine. Highly encourage anyone to try their sake bomb, as their craft beer selection is decent enough for anyone with a taste for craft lagers.

The Three Wise Monkeys Delivered! The ramen, the sushi, the buns – everything was absolutely delicious! The quality of the food was consistent across the board, and the flavors really hit the mark. The service was top notch – attentive, friendly, and efficient. My only (very personal) gripe: the place is quite crowded and therefore feels loud. It doesn’t quite give off the traditional restaurant vibe, more like a bustling, vibrant spot. That said, it didn’t take away from the experience at all – the food more than made up for it. Amazing overall – I’d definitely go back!

This is pretty good restaurant for japanese food such as ramen sushi and bao(steamed buns). But the ramen wasnt the best since the soup was rather bland but the sushi and bao makes up for that. The sushi was delicious as soon as you start eating the california it melts. The Soy sauce was good and so was the fresh salmon in the california. The bao was really soft and both chicken and tempure shrimps are both really good. The service was pretty good and fast. The atmosphere was good and not to mention is had the dragon ball pop collection on display cool right?

I have officially been schooled on Ramen bowls and I am addicted. This food is so fresh and delicious and full of great healthy ingredients. The environment is also young and fresh as well. It was amazing how quickly the place filled up. The whole menu is filled with authentic Japanese foods and options you can even order Japanese wine or beer and of course sake. The staff were super helpful a Nd friendly and we felt so comfortable and at home even though this was our first visit. Make this a stop on your Cape Town list. Parking was on the street and a bit hard to find.

The food was ok, but not special. The bao buns were a little bit dry and the buns came without a sauce, which made it boring. I also didn’t like the taste of the sushi as the sea weed was sweet, but that’s my preference! :)The cucumber salad and fish balls are very good! The service was very nice and kind :)

My friends and I loved the restaurant. When we got there, they were full, but they added our name on the list and called within 20 minutes and our table was ready. The vibe is really nice, and the staff were friendly. The food was really good and reasonably priced. I shared sushi with one of my friends, and we loved it. The others had ramen and they really enjoyed it, and the bite I tasted was really flavourful. I will definitely be back!
