Where to Get the Best Brunch in Puerto Rico | Condé Nast Traveler

"As its name suggests, a meal at Tía feels “like being in the house of your favorite aunt,” according to the restaurant’s website; that is, if your favorite aunt was Lilly Pulitzer. Pretty palm wallpaper plays off bright beachy blues, yellows, and pinks, in a contempo, daytime-only restaurant where “every day feels like Sunday.” The brunch menu features various forms of French toast; a signature monkey bread version is stopped with caramelized bananas and brown-butter maple syrup. There's also a Benedict and ropa vieja , a classic Caribbean shredded-beef stew. Tía is a refuge; come to pretend it’s still the weekend, even when it isn’t." - Kathleen Squires

Tia is a small cafeteria located in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. My wife found them on Instagram. We arrived on a Wednesday morning around 11am. Parking is valet only so be mindful. There are no reservations, walk-ins only. The main dining area has limited space. When we arrived we were greeted and seated quickly. After that things went downhill. We ordered a cafe latte to begin with while we looked over the menu. Afterwards we ordered a brown butter waffle, a chorizo burrito and a side of French toast and a side of bacon. We waited over 40 min until we had to ask our server, Katherine, what the problem was with the food taking so long. It appears that she either forgot or the kitchen staff forgot. She never came back, we were told she went on break. Other people that arrived after us, were ordering and getting their food before us. When the food came out, it wasn't hot, it was lukewarm, so it was probably just sitting there waiting. We quickly ate and paid for our meal. We tipped but they really didn't deserve a tip. I usually don't like to leave negative reviews but this visit could've been so much better, if only they paid attention to the basic details of the food industry. The servers were probably over worked because they were all over the place. Hopefully the management either hires more staff or helps out because the service was very lacking. The food was decent but nothing to rave about. We will not be coming back. There are better places to eat in Guaynabo and the metro area. This place is over hyped and just another social media trap.

The parking system is a little confusing. The parking manager was a little hostile asking if I had a reservation but I called the restaurant beforehand and was told they don't accept reservation so I was so confused. It took like 5 min to finally be let in to park because he was asking lots of questions and being hesitant to let me in (even though there was PLENTY of parking available). I felt like he just wanted me to leave because the place was full. 20 min later, we were let in to the restaurant. The waitress was kind but she would take so long to acknowledge us and took our coffee order in like 10-15 min after we sat. Later it took an hour for our food to be ready but one of my friend's food wasn't served after 15-20 min that the rest of the group's food was served. Food was good but not worth the price.

Google
Ordered through Uber Eats so I can’t comment on the atmosphere but the food was pretty terrible. Probably the worst meal I’ve ever ordered. Eggs were runny and cold with no flavor at all even though it had caramelized onions, spinach and mushrooms. It’s pretty hard to get scrambled eggs wrong. The chicken sandwich was flavorless. The toast was too hard. The iced coffee tasted like burnt coffee. The ONLY saving grace were the chocolate chip cookies. Those were delicious. The rest of it got chucked.

Google
One of the best brunch places I've been to. The best Mocha, Chicken & Waffles I've tasted. The lemon meringue pancakes and their Pera Toast were super delicious too. Their service was great and prices too. Definitely will keep coming back! ❤️🙌

Google
I had the chicken and waffles. Let me tell you, that was one of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had in my life. I would go back just for that. The waffle was wonderful, fluffy and not too sweet which was a perfect pairing for the honey sauce they offer with the plate. They use a specific coffee brand, sadly didn’t get the name, but it was so so so good. You don’t get the bitter after taste, and it has a few aromatic notes at the end that’s just wonderful. Also can’t forget to mention that service was amazing and we loved being able to see the kitchen production. We had a great experience, definitely felt like I was at my Tia’s place!

Google
I really liked this place. We went at 10am, it was busy but the service went smoothly and time-appropriate. Coffee was delicious. Orange juice and passion fruit juice were fresh and natural. Eggs Benedict were really good too, I didn’t like the “home fries”, they tasted like burnt garlic. Chicken and waffles good but the chicken was a tiny overcooked/burnt. But overall everything else was perfect!

Google
Great brunch place. We love the avocado toast and the lemon meringue pancakes. The steak and eggs was great too but a bit salty. The mimosas with fresh juice was the top. We had passion, acerola and guanábana. Even though the place was very busy we had great service. The atmosphere is great to have a nice conversation and funday. Buen provecho!

Google
Tia is a must every time I go to PR. It’s best to make reservations because space is limited. My go to is the chicken and waffle with the BBQ BOURBON Maple Syrup and a fruit bowl. Edit 2024 no longer carry the bbq bourbon maple syrup but the replacement honey garlic sauce is good not as good but it still was a great meal.

Yelp
Food was top notch! The French Toast was soft, warm and tasty. One of the best I've had in recent memory. The Huevos Rancheros was delicious - perfect balance of taste, with a runny egg. The Chicken & Waffles was unique, too. The fried chicken is probably also some of the best I've had in recent memory as well. The waffles come with honey butter - for me it was too heavy on the butter but many people enjoy that. Fries were thin and crunchy and perfect. Decor is hip, modern, and very nice. Admiring the books and plants and decorations on the wall adds to the atmosphere. Server was super nice and helpful. Also prompt and efficient. One of the best restaurants we visited here in Puerto Rico. Highly recommended!

Yelp

Yelp
Awesome!!!! The brunch was incredible. We had cornbread pancakes which were as light as a crepe. The regular pancakes were also very light and flavorful. The coffee was also very flavorful. I usually have black coffee but opted for a cappuccino which did not miss. Now the home fries - seasoned to perfection!!!! The waitress was very nice and accommodating. Highly recommended if you're ever in Puerto Rico.

Yelp
SO helpful to clueless tourists struggling to speak Spanish with food allergies. Beautiful place and the food was wonderful. WOW great coffee

Yelp
This is now my favorite place for brunch in PR. The reason are the Lemon Merengue Pancakes. They're amazing. I loved them. I wish I would have ordered the full stack of three. Instead, I just asked for one because I also ordered the huevos rancheros. The huevos rancheros were very disappointing. The salsa tasted more like Italian tomato sauce. These huevos rancheros were from the Elena and Rosa pop-up menu. The owner is the same and they feature a couple dishes from that restaurant here. Those eggs have carnitas, which is why o got them. Unfortunately the carnitas lacked Mexican seasoning. Also, there was no cilantro on the dish. Thankfully the pancakes were great. My husband ordered the chicken and waffles and our son the French toast. They were also delicious. Coffee was also good and the acerola mimosa was nice and refreshing. Aside from the food, I thought the vibe and decor were very nice. Service was excellent to make for a wonderful experience. We will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Great food and cool ambience. Coffee is delicious and service is on point. This place has an enchanting charm about it. Nice place to relax and chat with a friend.

Yelp
Tía es un desastre; no regreso/ Tía is a disaster; I wont be coming back. 1. The place had only two tables taken so it was basically empty. 2. Our waiter was trying to take our orders without a pen and paper & EVERYTHING came wrong. Pre pandemic I came all the time here and it was great, they had GF free options so I would enjoy a place to brunch. Post pandemic is a disaster; they took away all of the GF options in the bakery, they do no make make the oatmeal at the moment anymore (they have it sitting there with regular milk like a cafeteria). We ordered to share The Berry Toast (was good) because the waiter said it brought 2 toast! when the toast arrived it was just one and when we asked the waiter the only thing he said :" ooh sorry- do you want me bring another one?" yeaah right so we could pay additional right? After I order a coffee WITH THE FOOD and OAT MILK because I am Lactose Intolerant. They brought my coffee ahead and it did no have Oat milk. My best friend had to try the coffee because It was burnt & did not taste like Oat Milk. (The barista is not good anymore). The brought the correct coffee right before the food came and it was still burnt... We ordered our breakfast and thankfully he came back with a pen & paper and he wrote everything wrong. Thankfully he didn't put the order yet. The fold was good, but not worth the headache. I brought my best friend here for her birthday snd I regret it so badly. I don't recommend this place. Sorry, don't waste your time. I gave 1 star because it was the only option I had. I would've eaten better in Dennys.

Zaida M.

Yelp
The service, the moment you arrive, phenomenal. Everyone is just caring, attentive.... It's an experience. You want to stay, the ambiance is so inviting. And the food is exceptional. The Honey Butter is heaven. If you are looking for a place to spend quality time with love ones and enjoy an amazing meal, this is it!!

Yelp
A great spot to meet with girlfriends. Their breakfast and brunch is soooo good. I've tried their coffee, eggs, salads and French toast, they have always been awesome. So good!

Yelp
La dieta empieza mañana - "The diet begins tomorrow". That is their motto, and I'm all for it. I absolutely loved the chicken and waffles. I really like that they use chicken thighs instead of breasts. The bbq bourbon maple syrup was delicious. I would reorder this dish again and again. The lemon merengue pancakes were also very good. But its not just the food that was excellent. Paloma, our server, was a delight. She was very friendly and attentive. She helped make the experience memorable. I am definitely coming back.

Yelp
Ambiance was excellent and the service was also. It's a little pricey but well worth it! They should have a bottomless mimosas is all they are missing!

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Also, the parking is very comfortable and organized. The place is highly recommended.

Yelp
Came here while on a trip to Puerto Rico. The breakfast was delicious but I would be lying to you if I didn't say it was basic food. The staff was very nice, but the food took quite a bit to receive. Really nice spot to chill and chat with some friends if you are not in a rush.

Yelp
Stopped by this cute neighborhood cafe with the family. Parking is under the restaurant and easy to locate. Seating is limited especially if you have a larger group. Highly recommend everything we ordered, super delish and fast service!
google avatar

Isabel C.

Yelp
Very nice place for breakfast or lunch Service and food are excellent Be sure to make reservations!

Desi C.

Yelp
The food was decent. The waitresses were wonderful. The hostess is terrible, and not very friendly. We ubered to the restaurant, got to the door, and she made us walk down to the garage downstairs with kids to be added to the list. She however had a walkie talkie that she could have done that with... I would've left if we did not have hungry kids.

Yelp
This place was soooo good! Really glad that this was the first place we ate after arriving in Puerto Rico. Let's start with location. It's not really around much from what we could see. Our Uber driver didn't seem to be familiar with where he was taking us either. He just dropped us off in the middle of the road. We walked around trying to find the entrance because the original entrance facing the road was closed off for pick up/take out only. You actually have to walk in the parking garage where someone at a table will ask for your name (assuming you have reservations) and then call up to the restaurant to make sure they're ready. They didn't waste anytime. We walked through the back of the building and came around to the front of the lobby. We were seated promptly. The mimosas were great. We ordered guanabana and Jamaican cherry flavors. Then we got our appetites going with the salmon toast. That salmon toast was everything! For our entrees, we ordered huevos rancheros and the Leli omelette. The portions were great! And they give lots of breakfast potatoes as a side. They definitely give you your money's worth for everything on the menu it seems like. I saw an order of mac n cheese come out and it was huge. I definitely recommend checking this place out if you're in Puerto Rico.

Yelp
La comida es muy buena. Tuve los huevos rancheros y mi esposa tenia los tacos con chorizo. era un poco ruidoso por dentro.

Yelp
Had a great lunch yesterday with family. My falafel was delicious- service was way above average. Every plate we ordered was yummy. And of course the coffee was excellent!
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
The place was cute. Food was ok. Coffee was delicious. Fui pq TODO el mundo hablaba de este restaurante...pedi el sándwich de pollo. Estaba bueno.... $3 pesos por añadirle un slice de aguacate está un poco exagerado.

AJ B.

Yelp
Very good-tasting food with awesome presentation! the service is incredibly good and the location is nice with a very good ambient and decoration.

Wilson L.

Yelp
Great Breakfast and Brunch. Always visit this place with My Wife and Daughter everytime I flew to Puerto Rico. A little expensive but I guess this is the cost of living in this beautiful island.
google avatar

Kaitlin M.

Yelp
The coffee here was LEGIT AMAZING. And the food was super delicious. I had a latte with low fat milk, my sister had a latte with almond milk. We both had scrambled eggs with veggies and cheese and we split fruit. The wait staff was beyond nice, accommodating to allergies, and super helpful. The setting was just beautiful. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Irene D.

Yelp
¡Delicioso! Las mimosas son riquísimas y el servicio es excelente. Cada vez que viajo a la isla voy con mi hermana a disfrutar del brunch.

Vashawn M.

Yelp
Best breakfast food I've had in a Loooong time I took my wife, and the atmosphere was aesthetically pleasing.

Yelp
Excelente comida, presentación y calidad. Buen servicio, amabilidad y respeto. Pet friendly. Recomiendo hacer reservación.

Alexandra A.

Yelp
Service is meh but the food and ambiance make up for it. The coffee is made well. The natural juices are yummy. Watermelon is my personal fave. The club sandwich is out of this world. The lemon tart is something I find myself thinking about constantly. Honestly their baked goods are to die for. The cobb salad is so yummy and well made! This place never fails.
google avatar

Melodie R.

Yelp
Amazing food, especially the home sautéed potatoes. Only issue is long wait time for the food.
google avatar

Catrina P.

Yelp
Best customer service ever! They had great food, great atmosphere, and great drinks. From the moment we came in, I felt welcomed and ready. And everything came super fast. The food was perfectly seasoned. Chicken was juicy with perfect crunch. I don't have a single bad thing to say about this place. If you're around it's totally worth it.

Lem C.

Yelp
This is a great place for breakfast or lunch. The menu is simple but delicious. Love the relax ambiance and the retro decoration.
google avatar

Romary R.

Yelp
Very good food but the service is not. The one's who greet you when you arrive at the restaurant can be rude. It happened twice. And for me and many other people service is everything. This place has a lot of potential to be great!
google avatar

Angelina R.

Yelp
The food here is so delicious, it literally never misses. It gets super crowded on the weekend so make sure to make a reservation if you can. Some of my personal favorites are the Caesar Salad, Huevos Rancheros, as well as their breakfast sandwiches. I can't say enough good things about this place, but looking forward to going back soon!

Peggy A.

Yelp
Liked it very much, food quality. Service was good and ambiance was nice.will recommend highly

Yelp
I took a picture of my food but deleted by accident!! Food and Coffee is great!! Definitely aesthetically pleasing and beautiful place if you're looking to do a girls day or a date brunch with your SO

Yelp
Amazing!!! For me the best Breakfast in PR. The Food is super fresh and delicious and the Service is amazing too. Also the Coffee tastes so good.
google avatar

Juan R. C.

Yelp
Gran ambiente para un brunch dominical. Muy bien servicio. Los felicito. Me encanta ir allí.

Michelle W.

Yelp
The breakfast here is amazing! Parking is in a small lot below the restaurant. The attendant will ask for your party size and call ahead so your table will be ready when you head up or you know how long to expect to wait. The portions are generous and the food is flavorful. Best dirty chai I've had. I recommend the croquet madame, bacon sandwich, or the lemon meringue pancakes.

Gen O.

Yelp
Food is really good. Their bourbon maple syrup with the chicken and waffles is amazing

Denise S.

Yelp
Disappointing once again, the employees are the worst, arrived at 2:32pm and the waitress said the kitchen was closed since 2:30pm, while the website says open until 3:00pm. Definitely do not waste your time driving to TIA. This is not the first time I have an experience with employees that always have an excuse not to serve. Puerto Rico does it worst
google avatar

Linda C.

Yelp
Is a small, pretty place, with good ambience. Customer service was pretty good, and time wise they don't keep you waiting for too long for your food. Speaking about food, to my taste is an okay place. Not too fancy, or crazy, just simple breakfast. They do know hoy to serve, because it looks good and the coffee was pretty great. I don't think I'll necessarily go again.

Christine D.

Yelp
Very cute interior with some outdoor seating on a pleasant, plant filled patio. Menu is extensive -- kind of American diner style, with some PR twists. The food was tasty and portions larger than expected. We did a mix of sweet & savory, and probably should have done just one sweet option. Prices are a little on the high side for SJ, but match the trendy vibe. Service was pleasant but a bit slow on a Thursday morning (9 AM). Be advised you park behind the building in a lot accessed via a short underpass beneath the restaurant. Parking is free but attendant accepts tips.
google avatar

Jessica Y.

Yelp
We discovered this place about a month ago, and we've been going every weekend! If you go on a Saturday, expect to wait 30+ minutes unless you get there right when it opens! I love their steak and eggs and their avocado toasts. The juices are awesome! Coffee is great, but it always takes long to come out.
google avatar

Nyvette M.

Yelp
Super cozy chic place. Had family brunch. Highly recommended to try with your girlfriends as a saturday date. The bellinis spectacular. Favorite dishes Avocado toast, berry toast, guava pancakes.
google avatar

Diego T.

Yelp
10/10 Since my first time eating at Tía, this place has become my go-to brunch place. From its hipster like ambience to its great and humble service, Tía hits every aspect eloquently: it is delicious, fast, cool and clean.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
I don't come to this place as often as I want to because of the waiting times during the weekends. The food here is so good! I've tried pancakes, waffles, chicken sandwiches, scrambled eggs, salads, and toasts... love them all! They're also constantly coming up with new plates, which I think is cool. The decor is fantastic as well.
google avatar

Bilmarie W.

Yelp
This is my new fave for a light lunch. Potato soup was exquisite and Falafel sandwich was delish! Decor is gorgeous so it makes the ambience nice and complements the experience. Staff is friendly and happy :)

Yoalys G.

Yelp
Super nice place. Usually there are waiting times but I didn't have to wait because we were only two. The avocado toast was delicious. The egg benedicts were good, the potatoes that come with it were not that geat. The mimosas are good too. I'll be coming back.

Ariana C.

Yelp
Ordered via a third party app, everything was so good it did not matter the pecans and pumpkin seeds were missing from the pumpkin pancakes. Totally recommended

Samantha H.

Yelp
HIGH ratio of 'trendy eyewear' & fedoras to hot food. I came with the expectations that this was going to be a delicious and nice brunch. It's an over the top 'trendy' place, that you sit side by side to people you don't know. Your elbows will be touching your neighbor. If you're going with a family or a party of more than 2+ people go elsewhere. Big parties look like sardines in a Carmela can, people falling over and out of the tables... too close for my comfort. Also, you see large horse flies around the restaurant buzzing around the guest's faces. We ordered the avocado toast, came it cold and the avocado browned, which was not what I was expecting. Then my husband's food came out 2 minutes later (hamburger bread was falling in crumbs) and mine 15 min later with a hair on my pancake (and cold). Which coming into the restaurant, I knew this was going to be a situation as they no guests that were eating at the same time as their companion. Plates were coming out at all different times. When one goes to a restaurant, it's typical to eat at the same time as your companion... I guess not here. As all the reviews state, yes the decoration is nice but the chef has a mess in terms of timing, as it comes out cold and at different times. The place is seeming to be a 'popular' brunch place, but I honestly wouldn't recommend this place to anybody between the food, horse flies, and meeting your neighbors. It's a place to be seen with your trendy glasses and fedoras.
