The Best Things to Do in Costa Rica: Surfing, Rainforests, and Treehouse Hotels

"If you’re eager to see Costa Rica’s natural beauty from a unique vantage point, look to the rivers. Costa Rica’s mountains feature some truly excellent whitewater experiences, immersing you deep in the jungle without the sound of motor encroaching on your experience. Skilled guides can take you to Eden-like swimming holes and waterfalls you can jump from. There are a lot of operators to choose from, but we like the Costa Rican owned and operated Tico's River Adventures, which takes you down the absolutely resplendent Pacuare River (which National Geographic has called “one of the world’s top rafting rivers”) on a one-day, or two-day trip for equal amounts of thrills and scenery."

I highly recommend this experience—it was an awesome time for my family. We felt safe the whole way through, which really mattered since I was with my wife and daughters. The guides were super friendly, and there were kayakers in the water for safety and to take great photos and videos. The rapids were exciting, but there were also calm spots to relax and enjoy the scenery. Afterward, they served a tasty lunch and had showers and changing rooms, which was a nice bonus. Overall, a fun and well-run adventure. We’d definitely do it again!

Tico's River adventures with senior Roberto and junior Roberto was a wild but safe rafting trip. Mixture of beautiful scenery on the one day trip (get the one day trip if you really want to just raft, and if you have two free days, go twice! It's the same portion of river) with big waves, swimming, and a good lunch. They have a very comfortable van for transportation. Definitely book these guys!

What a phenomenal experience with Roberto and Alejandro! Never once questioned safety! Left at 8am and got on the boat from 8:30-12 small break in the middle of the trip! Had a chance to swim in a beautiful part of the river! 100% recommend this spot (family owned, help the locals :) )

1) Float this river while in CR…..absolutely breathtaking scenery and basically a roller coaster ride from start to finish. I guarantee it will be a trip highlight. 2) GO WITH ROBERTO (owner of Ticos)….he is incredibly fun and helpful on the river and organized and responsive while planning the trip. He runs a truly first class operation. Incredible guy! 3) Don’t be scared off by rain….we were concerned with our weather the morning of the trip (cool and raining), but between starting at lower elevation (little warmer than Turrialba) and the adrenaline, we were pleasantly surprised with our comfort during the float. 4) The lunch on the river was very good….normally, lunches on these types of trips are more of a “check the box” thing….but, Roberto and his son (also Roberto) made a very nice, fresh spread for the meal. 5) Can’t say enough good things about this trip and company…..have fun!!!!

We had a great day with Tico and his crew, they were really warm and welcoming. We felt really safe whilst enjoying lots of action. The lunch was lovely and we'd highly recommend them. We also appreciated them taking amazing quality photos and no pressure to buy them.

Very good experience from start to finish. Our guide was excellent and the whole team was very friendly. Thank you for a great time. Please be aware that the photos are optional and not included. We paid $60 for the photos, which felt quite expensive compared to the activity itself !!

We had an absolute blast with Tico's Adventure! Their guides are both experienced and fun, and every team member we met was friendly and welcoming. The scenery was stunning, the rapids were exciting, and the wildlife was incredible—this tour truly had it all. I definitly recommend a gread local small business like Tico's.

Amazing trip! Definitely the most beautiful rainforest views in Costa Rica. The guide was very experienced so it felt safe. An absolute must when in Costa Rica. PS - we saw waterfalls, macauws, toucans, and an indigenous tribe village. So cool!
