The 7 Best Hostels in Oaxaca (Updated 2025)

"I enjoyed the laid-back, social atmosphere at Ticuchi Hostal, which features a pool, an on-site bar, multiple lounge areas (including a ping-pong table) and a fully equipped kitchen ideal for longer stays. The bunks are comfortable and each has its own outlet and privacy curtain, plus a white-noise fan in the dorms to help you sleep; staff-organized activities like karaoke and communal meals and cheap drinks at the bar keep things lively though the party vibe winds down early enough to get rest." - Matthew Kepnes

Stayed for 3 nights in September. Great hostel with amazing staff - couldn't have asked for nicer people + nothing was too much trouble! Great spot in Oaxaca + offer a range of activities, etc.

I came to stay at Ticuchi while traveling alone (41yo married woman)during Galaguetza so it was a peak time for the city and the hostel. I am an experienced traveler and have stayed in many hostels around the world. This is a long review that tries to touch on everything. Ticuchi hostel is very easily in my top 3 best hostel experiences and is probably #1. PROS:|Location: Ticuchi is located in the perfect location to be in the fun of all things associated with el Centro minus the extreme crowds. It is just a few blocks away from the main square and provided respite from crowd but access to everything. |Things within 10-15 minutes walking:|-All the best plazas including Plaza de Danza, Santo Domingo, el Zocalo; Main bus terminal;Blacks Gym - An AWESOME gym for any weight lifting needs that offers great one or two week memberships;Rock climbing gym - just a few blocks away (worth a visit and a day pass); Two large outdoor mercados that should cover anything you can possibly imagine needing or wanting to buy; Restaurants and coffee shops around every corner (just ask Ulises and Ruben mentioned below)|Esthetics: Ticuchi is an instagramers’ paradise - just google image search it and you will see photos of the beautiful white walls and terracotta roof with contrasting bright green cactus lined up backdropping the bright blue pool in the center of the hostel courtyard.|Activities: At least 4-5 days a week Ticuchi was hosting different activities or party themes for guests including karaoke night, salsa classes, cooking classes, beer pong/ping pong tournament, live music, and catering for guests who could enjoy all this while ordering drinks at the in house bar - situated conveniently alongside the pool. |Amenities: Other than the obvious - internet, shared kitchen (with plenty of cooking space), bar, ample storage space, tours, here are some other highlights: Beds: some of the most comfortable I’ve had in a hostel and competed with higher end beds at hotels I stayed at near-by; Linens/Towels: The bed linens were very soft and high quality. Not a given at most hostels. AND you can leave a deposit to get a loaner towel for your stay;Bathrooms: There are plenty of bathrooms and showers for guests so I never had to wait to take a shower; Pool: Do not sleep on the value of a small refreshing pool to jump in or dip your tired and hot legs in during the day- this was one of my favorite mid day activities and it alone makes this hostel worth every penny and more.|Staff: Okay - by far the most valuable amenity that Ticuchi offers is its staff - all the volunteers (who were both mexican and foreign) were enthusiastic, friendly, and almost always took folks out for a night on the town after the bar closed up at 11 and sometimes arrange for discounted entrances at local clubs or announce where everyone was going so folks could meet up. |People to seek out: Mayo: The hotel manager and general Jefe, if you stay here, take some time to hang out with Mayo - one of the most generous and friendly people you will ever meet, ever. Mayo goes above and beyond to make guests comfortable and will make you feel like “estas en tu casa”. While I was there he spent an entire evening helping a hostel guest get medical attention for pink eye … we are talking went to the hospital with the kid and everything. |-Maribel- You cant stay here and not know who she is - she is everywhere around the hostel cleaning and organizing everything like a super smiley and friendly machine. If you take the time to know her - then you will most definitely miss her when you leave, like I do. |-Ulises and Ruben - if you are lucky enough to visit Ticuchi while these two young men are still there - also make friends with them. They are incredibly friendly and eager to show you around but they ALSO make the most amazing coffees that guests can purchase from a little pop-up coffee stand they manage called Sendero Norte from the steps of Ticuchi. Ulises and Ruben are also connected to the tour company used most frequently by Ticuchi and can help you get signed up for some amazing tours. |-Julio - Runs the front desk during the evenings/morning and is just delightful and funny in all his interactions. |-Simon, Ammed,Ty,Gema, Lalo y los demas - Ticuchi attracts good vibes and good people, spend time knowing them and your trip will be better for it. |Price: SO REASONABLY PRICED! |CONS: The hostel is still just a hostel so hot water is sometimes used up for short periods. Ticuchi also offers cold showers in a few of the bathrooms - which many folks used during the heat of the days (so maybe its also a perk?); No shelves in bunks. There were no personal shelves or hooks in my bunk which I always appreciate having to be able to keep some of my regularly used belongings easily accessible without cluttering the bed itself. I.e. like hair stuff, lotions, charging devices, etc; The bar doesn’t stock any wine.

Originally booked for one night but ended up staying for three. The Hostel has a fantastic location, making it the perfect base for exploring Oaxaca. The rooms are comfortable, with large beds. The shared kitchen is well-equipped and roomy, so multiple people can cook at the same time without hassle. Bruce does an amazing job organizing daily activities, making it easy to meet other travelers and get involved. We joined the waterfall and Mezcal tour, and we highly recommend it! Yes, you do take local buses, as mentioned in other reviews, but that’s intentional as Bruce keeps costs down to make the tour more affordable. Plus, riding the buses and open truck added to the adventure, making the day even more fun. Drink prices are reasonable, and there’s a happy hour every day. The bar has events most evenings, so if you're a light sleeper or prefer early nights, we suggest avoiding the dorm next to the bar. Ours was just around the corner, and it was totally fine. We didn’t use the pool, so can't comment. It's a small space right next to the bar. Plenty of toilets and showers. The reception team was generally helpful whenever we needed assistance. Overall, we had a fantastic stay and would 100% return. Highly recommend Ticuchi Hostel! A couple of things to note that could be improved but didn't ruin our experience or stay. - Showers can be very temperamental. We had a few unexpected cold showers. (But this has happened a lot throughout our whole central America trip. - Hooks are definitely needed in the showers as nowhere to hang anything. Everything that touches the floor ends up soaked. - Our dorm door and windows could have definitely done with a curtain for privacy and for the mornings with the sun. You do get a private curtain for your bed though.

Hostel is very noisy due to hostel stayers but also the steps/beds being extremely noisy and squeaky, making it hard to sleep. No air-con. Social areas and bar area could do with some improvement and better places to sit. Not enough spots to relax. They do have social activities in the evenings but it isn’t particularly a party hostel. Cleanliness of the bathrooms could really be improved. Also hooks in the bathroom for you to hang your clothes. However Bruce was the most fantastic tour guide. I did the waterfall & mezcal tour and the street food tour whilst staying at the hostel. He was incredibly knowledgable and they were by far the best hostel tours I’ve ever experienced. Some of my best experiences I’ve had in Mexico!

Amazing staff. Felt at home. Super accommodating. Fair price. No AC - but there was a fan. Great vibes definitely would recommend.

We stayed here 3 nights, overall we had a great time, staff and people were great, hostel layout was fine, bar and pool were great! And an epic street food tour run by Bruce . The bad. - We had a private room, which was a letdown for the price, I actually used the public shower as it was much better than the private ensuite, and the room had a bad drain smell, also the rooms are in the bar area, which luckily doesn’t bother us as we do party,… however if you want a nice quite sleep I wouldn’t recommend, you can hear people up and chatting until 4am, The dorms looks much better , and we wish we didn’t spend so much for this room,

It's probably the coolest little lowkey hostel. The vibe there is great, the staff there are cool and very welcoming. Bruce runs their tours, and he is an absolute legend. He is really good at bringing the groups together on the tours. He even accommodates backpackers by adjusting prices of the tours if you only want to do certain parts of a tour. Met some of the best people on our travels here. It's a very social hostel with a small party vibe. The party usually starts at the bar then everyone usually goes out together. I 100% recommend staying at Ticuchi if you visit Oaxaca. Great hostel.

Well, I booked in here for 1 night. I ended up extending 4 times and I’ve been here for 11 days. I had an amazing experience! Nice people, nice vibe, and a fantastic location. A great place to explore the city, and also if you just want to chill, it’s almost like a resort! Thanks to the staff for an amazing experience!
