I came to stay at Ticuchi while traveling alone (41yo married woman)during Galaguetza so it was a peak time for the city and the hostel. I am an experienced traveler and have stayed in many hostels around the world. This is a long review that tries to touch on everything. Ticuchi hostel is very easily in my top 3 best hostel experiences and is probably #1. PROS:|Location: Ticuchi is located in the perfect location to be in the fun of all things associated with el Centro minus the extreme crowds. It is just a few blocks away from the main square and provided respite from crowd but access to everything. |Things within 10-15 minutes walking:|-All the best plazas including Plaza de Danza, Santo Domingo, el Zocalo; Main bus terminal;Blacks Gym - An AWESOME gym for any weight lifting needs that offers great one or two week memberships;Rock climbing gym - just a few blocks away (worth a visit and a day pass); Two large outdoor mercados that should cover anything you can possibly imagine needing or wanting to buy; Restaurants and coffee shops around every corner (just ask Ulises and Ruben mentioned below)|Esthetics: Ticuchi is an instagramers’ paradise - just google image search it and you will see photos of the beautiful white walls and terracotta roof with contrasting bright green cactus lined up backdropping the bright blue pool in the center of the hostel courtyard.|Activities: At least 4-5 days a week Ticuchi was hosting different activities or party themes for guests including karaoke night, salsa classes, cooking classes, beer pong/ping pong tournament, live music, and catering for guests who could enjoy all this while ordering drinks at the in house bar - situated conveniently alongside the pool. |Amenities: Other than the obvious - internet, shared kitchen (with plenty of cooking space), bar, ample storage space, tours, here are some other highlights: Beds: some of the most comfortable I’ve had in a hostel and competed with higher end beds at hotels I stayed at near-by; Linens/Towels: The bed linens were very soft and high quality. Not a given at most hostels. AND you can leave a deposit to get a loaner towel for your stay;Bathrooms: There are plenty of bathrooms and showers for guests so I never had to wait to take a shower; Pool: Do not sleep on the value of a small refreshing pool to jump in or dip your tired and hot legs in during the day- this was one of my favorite mid day activities and it alone makes this hostel worth every penny and more.|Staff: Okay - by far the most valuable amenity that Ticuchi offers is its staff - all the volunteers (who were both mexican and foreign) were enthusiastic, friendly, and almost always took folks out for a night on the town after the bar closed up at 11 and sometimes arrange for discounted entrances at local clubs or announce where everyone was going so folks could meet up. |People to seek out: Mayo: The hotel manager and general Jefe, if you stay here, take some time to hang out with Mayo - one of the most generous and friendly people you will ever meet, ever. Mayo goes above and beyond to make guests comfortable and will make you feel like “estas en tu casa”. While I was there he spent an entire evening helping a hostel guest get medical attention for pink eye … we are talking went to the hospital with the kid and everything. |-Maribel- You cant stay here and not know who she is - she is everywhere around the hostel cleaning and organizing everything like a super smiley and friendly machine. If you take the time to know her - then you will most definitely miss her when you leave, like I do. |-Ulises and Ruben - if you are lucky enough to visit Ticuchi while these two young men are still there - also make friends with them. They are incredibly friendly and eager to show you around but they ALSO make the most amazing coffees that guests can purchase from a little pop-up coffee stand they manage called Sendero Norte from the steps of Ticuchi. Ulises and Ruben are also connected to the tour company used most frequently by Ticuchi and can help you get signed up for some amazing tours. |-Julio - Runs the front desk during the evenings/morning and is just delightful and funny in all his interactions. |-Simon, Ammed,Ty,Gema, Lalo y los demas - Ticuchi attracts good vibes and good people, spend time knowing them and your trip will be better for it. |Price: SO REASONABLY PRICED! |CONS: The hostel is still just a hostel so hot water is sometimes used up for short periods. Ticuchi also offers cold showers in a few of the bathrooms - which many folks used during the heat of the days (so maybe its also a perk?); No shelves in bunks. There were no personal shelves or hooks in my bunk which I always appreciate having to be able to keep some of my regularly used belongings easily accessible without cluttering the bed itself. I.e. like hair stuff, lotions, charging devices, etc; The bar doesn’t stock any wine.
