10 Singapore heritage restaurants to visit for a taste of nostalgia - SilverKris

"Located within a grand colonial hotel and operating since 1892, this restaurant specialises in regal North Indian fare presented in classic tiffin boxes and enhanced by theatrical touches such as tableside service by chefs. Inspired by maharaja-style feasts, the menu features lavish kebabs, richly spiced curries, biryanis and tandoori dishes; a recent menu refresh introduced dishes like gucchi methi mattar malai (a white mushroom curry) and balti gosht (spiced lamb leg), while the interior has been carefully restored with period-accurate heritage details." - SilverKris

Keeshan and the team were very professional and knowledgeable. The Chinese gentleman with the face mask setting our table offered introductions to each dish that was set on the table. Overall, the staff were fantastic and worked efficiently, especially notable on a Friday night with a full house. Ambiance was good, child friendly as well, would recommend to those visiting Singapore. They have alfresco dining as well. It's at the Famous Raffles Hotel✨️ Please make a reservation

Google
Great northern Indian food with lots of variety, including excellent vegetarian options. It’s definitely more elevated than most Indian restaurants, with a beautiful setting in the Raffles Hotel. The pricing reflects that to some degree, although we found the menus to be decent value - alcohol is expensive though. A particular highlight was the service by Flormari, who took really great care of us and made it a memorable evening :)

The environment was great and comfortable. The food was ok, not too pricy but a bit spicy for us. The services were excellent especially Tonny Lam, he was super helpful and considerate and he offered some plain yogurt to us to effectively relieve the spiciness of the food without compromising the taste of the food. Lastly thanks for the birthday treat! Overall, it’s a high standard restaurant, strongly recommended!

Google
Tiffin room is an irrevocably excellent restaurant. Flormari is a wondeful and kind lady who aided in the service of my table. She was very experienced and had an amazing story. The food was excellent, but the quality and quantity of food was directly proportional to the price. Lots of vegetarian options were provided as well. The atmosphere was pleasant, quiet enough to talk but loud enough to feel the life of others.

Google
I had the pleasure of dining with my family at Tiffin Room last night for the very first time. This exquisite restaurant is a rare find. The excellent food, coupled with top notch service from the service staff, made it an impeccable dining experience. It is conveniently located within Raffles Hotel, a short walk away from Raffles City Shopping Centre, which has ample parking and is accessible by City Hall MRT. I will certainly return now that I have become acquainted with this fine restaurant.

Google
Our second time to Tiffin Room while in Singapore and we were pleasantly surprised by the set menu that night - a collab with Tiffin Room and Benares. Everything was delicious, but my favourites were the scallop and the lamb shank. Staff were extremely accommodating - they moved us from outside to inside seating after an online reservation mistake. They also allowed me to substitute some items in the set menu due to dietary restrictions. Very attentive and kind.

Google
Food was excellent. Portions were generous. Waiters were attentive although service was slow. Atmosphere was vibrant albeit room temperature was a little too cold . Price was a little excessive for what we actually ordered. Waiter Tonny did a decent job with the service and was very friendly.

Google
Service is great, ambience is very classic. Tranquil atmosphere, staffs are friendly and very attentive. Food is high quality but taste is more to western palate, not truly Indian. The daal makhani was very buttery, may be that’s the original way to cook but we couldn’t finish it. Chaad and paneer tikka was excellent.

Yelp
Wonderful experience here for dinner. Staff could not have been more welcoming and attentive during our visit. The food was delicious, perfectly cooked and full of the flavours of northern India. We will return on our next visit to Raffles hotel.

Yelp
We went for Diwali menu and the items prepared by Tiffin were really excellent. Only one dish Jackfruit curry was not up to expectation. Service was very helpful and prompt. We will again go there on next opportunity. We will give the top rating.

Yelp
I enjoyed a delicious East Indian dinner with three of my friends in the Tiffin Room. The ambiance is opulent and the atmosphere jovial with vibrant chatter and laughter throughout. I had premeditated thoughts of a Singapore Sling. So that's exactly what I ordered. What an exotic, refreshing cocktail! We ordered the Tandoori chicken, Palak Chaat, Hari Tawa Tiki (vegetable patty), Raan Tiffin (lamb), Tikka Masala(chicken), Lahsuni Bhuna Gosht (Garlic lamb), garlic Naan and some basmati rice. The food was all so flavorful with nuances of flavors from exotic spices. If you're looking for East Indian food with less aggressive spices, the food is delicious although not authentic! The staff here are super friendly and attentive. It's comfortable and a good time in the Tiffin Room located in the Raffles Hotel. I'll definitely return next time in Singapore! - might be the bar or the restaurant!

Yelp
Best Indian food I've ever eaten. The lamb and chicken were both extremely tender and super flavorful. The butter on was delicious. Great experience overall.

Yelp
In SG for fun and wanted to check out an Indian cuisine spot so why not one of the oldest spots in SG at the Raffles hotel. Got reservations and a friend came along so we hit it up! Went for the prix fix meal which was reasonably priced and offered apps, mains, rice, naan, & dessert...overall great food, but really beautiful restaurant and amazing service. I counted at least 4 diff servers including a head server and a sommelier at our table. All were attentive and helpful. Food was great! Apps were all flavorful and paneer and chicken were my favorites. The mains of murgh makhani and paneer butter masala were great and offered a little kick and the daal was a but buttery but some of the best I ve had. Most definitely worth a stop for the ambiance, service and food!

Yelp
Tiffin room is a classic case of style over substance. The setting, ambience and service are excellent, as is expected of a restaurant in the iconic Raffles hotel (the birthplace of the Singapore sling). But the food sadly misses the mark. We had the "tiffin" special where the dishes are served in indian "tiffin" boxes. The food is very unremarkable, missing the typical flavors Indian food is so known for. For the prices they are charging, I would have hoped for a bolder take on flavors. It could be they are not catering to the usual Indian palate, but I find that very off putting. Why claim to be an Indian restaurant when even the simplest of Indian dishes are not authentic. So yes, if you want "toned down" Indian food in a plush ambience, go for it, but for actual Indian flavors and variety go elsewhere, both your stomach and wallet will be happier.

Yelp
Elegant dining room with great service. The menu has interesting and unusual dishes, especially among street food and appetiser offerings, but the flavour is extremely mild, too tuned down for western palates.

Yelp
I came here on a Tuesday for Afternoon Tea. This services offered between three and 5 o'clock. My suggestion would be to get here before 15:00 as people tend to queue fairly early. Not sure why because there is plenty of seating for all who have made proper reservations. This is a fabulous affair; one not to be missed. There is no shortage of afternoon tea offered in Singapore, however, at approximately US $55, afternoon tea at the famous raffles hotel is quintessential Singapore. I enjoyed afternoon tea on several days throughout my visit however, many places fell short. This was my absolute favorite afternoon tea experience. Once seated, you are greeted by a friendly serve her offering you an assortment of tease and coffee. They bring in assortment of pastries and savory items such as cucumber tea cakes and tartlets to your table. Then, as if this weren't enough, you are offered the opportunity to partake in the buffet which includes everything from dim sum, fruit cakes, a variety of scones, fruit and bread pudding with an absolutely wonderful vanilla sauce. I went with the English breakfast tea so strong and my cattle was never left empty. The only downside is that you are not able to take your leftovers with you. I was disturbed at this is customary in Singapore due to Government health related regulations. While understandable, it is never the less quite a bummer. I will definitely make reservations for afternoon tea in the Tiffin room again.

Yelp
We decided that the best way to try the Tiffin Room would be a high tea, which I must say was very well done and included a couple of things to set it apart from the crowd. The staff were perhaps somewhat surprisingly very friendly, not stuffy, we saw them taking photos for groups and even allowing people to chose when they were served, so full marks here. The food was enjoyable, and the inclusion of a buffet of Asian dumplings and extra sweets was nice; though I was a little disappointed that some of the sweets appeared in both the served tray and buffet... A minor issue really. As a once off experience when visiting Singapore I would recommend this, though there was nothing that would excite me to repeat my dining experience from the high tea perspective.

Yelp
First time to the tiffin room for their Indian buffet lunch. It's $68++ and honestly I didn't think it was worth it. The food was tasty but very much toned down to suit western palates. The spread was not particularly varied though there's still sufficient representation for each section (salads, appetizers, hot, desserts). There was a section for non Indian food lovers, smoked salmon, cheeses etc. What's unique? During this Christmas season, there was special honey baked ham and turkey carving stations and log cakes as well. Other positive points: Fresh garlic and butter naan were served freshly baked to the table automatically. They were served with a minced lamb dip. The waiter also comes along twice with daily specials. One was like a pulled lamb and the other was baked mushrooms with cheese. The mushrooms were the bomb! Lastly, the raisin cardamom kulfi was the bomb! A little too sweet but the flavor was to die for!

Yelp
As I stood in line waiting to he seated for the afternoon high tea, I wondered whether I had fallen into yet another tourist trap. Every single table was occupied, so be sure to reserve well in advance. With the added service charges, the two hour escape from the heat will set you back S$68 and champagne is extra. I do think it is worth the experience. The staff is incredibly attentive, constantly filling up your coffee or tea, replenishing food and asking whether you are enjoying your high tea. The spread includes fresh scones, curry chicken pies, steamed buns, dumplings, fresh fruit, bread pudding and assorted pastries. In addition, each table gets a three tiered stand with sandwiches and more pastries, so technically you never have to leave your table. The quality and freshness of the food were excellent. The scones were still warm, moist and flakey. Perfect with a bit of butter and strawberry preserves. No kaya though. The seafood and vegetable dumplings and the bread pudding were my favorites. Definitely a must do while you are in Singapore. You will be so full that you can skip dinner.

Yelp
I really want to love this place, we were excited and reserved a week prior our arrival to singapore, tucked lovely inside iconic Raffle hotel, crispy white decor, tall ceilings w lot of natural lights, but overall experience had been mediocre, it felt more of a tourist trap than a place that we can really enjoy the tea w dessert pairings! There was dimsum when we visited, kinda weird combination, none of the dimsums stand out anyways, the waiter and bus boys were friendly, but at the same time they were tense covering numerous tables and trying to please and help w photo taking for each tables to please their customers, or at least they tried. What really turned me off was the quality of tea and pastries, the selection of green teas were limited, black tea was subpar in quality, macaroons were not part of the pastries, I felt like for the amount we were paying per person, at least we deserve some quality tea and pastries.

Yelp
My wife and I came to the Tiffin Room for tea during the F1 race this September. It was a really enjoyable experience. Not just did we get a tower of delightful tea sandwiches, there was a full all-you-can-eat buffet of fruits, scones, dim sum (4 different kinds), desserts, and juices. And of course tea, for which there were at least 4 kinds to try. I was actually very surprised to have enjoyed the experience as much as I did. It was wonderful. The service was amazing, the food was all perfect, and I left feeling like the price I paid (which was a lot!!) was absolutely fair. I would definitely recommend it to others who are in the mood to splurge.

Yelp
Afternoon tea was such a disappointment, Raffles and the Tiffin Room are definitely resting on their laurels here. A plate of sandwiches made from slightly stale store-bought loaves doesn't cut the mustard in this foodie capital. Cucumber sandwiches, while traditional, are quite uninspiring, not to mention the tuna mayo and egg mayo sandwiches that accompanied. The dim sum selection was equally uninspiring. The sweet selection wasn't great either. As it is nearly Christmas there were mini mince pies; I've had better store bought ones and a vague approximation of Christmas pudding which was pretty horrible. The only thing I ate which was really nice was the curry puff. There was also a choir singing Christmas carols. They had lovely voices but were so loud that it was impossible to carry on a conversation, for the ENTIRE tea service. Of course many people go to tea at Raffles simply for the atmosphere and experience but that doesn't mean the food needs to be poor at best. I've had Sunday brunch at Raffles and it was excellent so it's not as if it's a hotel-wide problem. My advice would be to give it a miss and check out one of the other excellent teas on offer in the city.

Tiffany D.

Yelp
I did not experience some of the lackluster performance as some have stated in their reviews, the staff was extremely attentive (and it was just me, no one else at my table) helpful but not pushy. I loved the sandwiches and the pastries, I could have ate the whole display by myself. Make sure you save room for the dim sum, and the bread pudding!! Wow! Lovely experience.

Julie Z.

Yelp
Skip the afternoon tea and go elsewhere. The standard for afternoon tea is a really good scone and clotted cream, but they totally messed up the scone. Also, the dim sum was cold and we had to ask several times for our cups to be filled with tea. The hotel is lovely to look at and walk around in, but I would suggest snapping some photos and going elsewhere for tea!

G W.

Yelp
We made reservations weeks in advanced for high tea only to have to wait in line for 30 min. Since men must wear long pants and that time of day puts the line in the sun this is just abuse of patrons. Why make reservation and wait 30 mins?

Rob P.

Yelp
I was really hoping for just a bit more from high tea at the Raffles but still, all in all, a good experience. The ambience is very pleasant. When we were there a harpsichordist was playing. The decor is, as expected, elegant and classic. The food in general was very good and some of the desserts were exceptional. My disappointment came from the fact that, 1, the tea selection was a bit sparse and was just a tea bag in a tea pot, and, 2, food service was via a buffet. Couldn't they simply serve everything to the table and remove the Vegas-hotel vibe I get from a buffet? Final cost is about $70 pp, so not a must do but a nice one off experience.
