We had read a lot about, and seen some great Instagram pics of, Tiisch and thought it just the place to go for our Melbourne Cup lunch. In Milligan Street, just across from what was the Old Melbourne Hotel, Tiisch is a very on trend coffee shop and café, very impressively decorated, and for the Cup lunch they had a special event licence, so we are able to partake of a glass or two of excellent Champagne while we watched the race and enjoyed the food.
A choice of three entrée, three mains, and dessert were all very tempting - in the end we settled for scallops and mushrooms from the starters, trout and pasta for our mains.
Plump and juicy, lightly seared scallops sat on a bed of crunchy salad, Waldorf style, with a rasher of crisply fried pancetta draped across - light, fresh, full of briny flavours of the ocean offset by sweet apple and creamy mayo - lovely.
The second of the entrées, mushrooms stuffed with cheese, a touch of earthy aromatic truffle and topped with a cover of crisp garlic infused breadcrumbs, was equally noteworthy.
Onto the mains and ocean trout, crisply seared skin, tender, moist, flaking flesh, came with velvety risotto of crab and potato, a sprinkle of peppery cress and a splash of dill infused oil; great presentation and beautifully complementary flavours and texture.
Orecchiette pasta with a rich, creamy sauce of peas, courgettes, oyster mushrooms and snappy asparagus, liberally scattered with grated parmigiano reggiano, our second main was another hit. Al dente pasta, with lightly cooked vegetables adding bite and texture.
Dessert also proved to be right on the money - a wobbly chocolate panna cotta, juicy Cointreau marinated orange segments, crisp biscotti and a dash of floral highlights looked good, tasted even better.
Tiisch is a very impressive spot - great fitout, very good food, beautifully presented, friendly and welcoming atmosphere - I understand they are looking to get a licence which will add to the attraction. Great spot, get along there and try it out.
