3 Best Day Trips from San Diego | Condé Nast Traveler

"You'll only need an hour or so to get a good feel for CECUT (Centro Cultural Tijuana), where paintings, sculptures, and photos—ranging from classical to contemporary to ballsy—depict Baja's history from the early Native Americans to the 1910 Mexican Revolution to today. It's not extremely comprehensive, but, with traditional gallery spaces, performing arts stages, botanical gardens, a small aquarium, and an IMAX theater housed in an impressive dome-shaped structure (dubbed La Bola), it's not skimpy either. The space is friendly for fluent and non-fluent alike: most signs are in English and Spanish." - Archana Ram

It’s a very nice museum with fascinating architecture and a clear, engaging presentation of history — from cave people to the U.S.–Mexico War. The photography exhibitions were excellent, especially the photos about the U.S.–Mexico border.

I want to rate the Cultural Center higher, but as a whole, it needs some love and care and money put into it. The signs in the botanical garden have been highly vandalized and the statues are plastic replicas. The art exhibit in The Cube was really interesting though and I do recommend it. For $5/person it's a great deal and totally worth it.

My wife and I had an amazing time visiting the Tijuana Cultural Center. From the moment we arrived, the energy was incredible—live music echoed through the open spaces, creating a festive atmosphere that made the entire experience feel alive and welcoming. One of our favorite parts was browsing the vendor area. There were so many unique, handcrafted goods that truly reflected the creativity and spirit of the region. You can tell the artisans take great pride in their work. The art exhibits were thought-provoking and beautifully curated. Some pieces were bold and experimental, while others honored the deep historical and cultural roots of the area. We especially enjoyed how interactive and diverse the installations were—everything from traditional murals to modern, conceptual art. CECUT is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the heart and soul of Tijuana. Whether you’re into music, art, shopping, or simply exploring, it offers something for everyone.

This place is so nicely setup inside. The pottery exhibits are extremely impressive. Could do with a bit more upkeep on the exterior.

Attended the Binational Conference of Social Work Post-Pandemic. Excellent location on a Friday. Vendors galore set up all day with food, can lots more. So much fun. It is across from a beautiful mall. Lots of traffic as there is a turn circle, be careful. I enjoyed the cultural experience. Very friendly people and helpful all around. Will go again. The exit at the border was about an hour, so be patient, and go with a buddy for company and to chat with a long the way. Remember your passport.

Yelp
Great museum with so much history! I've been meaning to visit here for many years, and I'm so glad we stopped by on this trip. The entrance fee was very reasonable, and we spent about two hours on site. They have a theater on site, small botanical garden, museum and a coffee shop. Please take a side trip and visit this gem if you're in the area!

Yelp
I've visited CECUT several times, but it's now a place where I take my children. They offer great events and exhibitions at a very reasonable price, as well as recreational shops for the kids to enjoy. This is the location to go if you enjoy visiting Tijuana and want to locate a spot with art and activities.

Yelp
Nice place to spend the day on the weekends when they have the outdoor bazaars. They have people selling authentic Mexican food, clothes, toys, crystals, performances and concerts. Stuff is relatively cheap too. On the inside is their museum that has lots of Mexican cultural stuff like paintings m, statues and hand crafted items. There is also an imax theater that shows educational films. It's free to look at all the stuff. You can buy tickets to watch an imax film. There's also a garden and aquarium in the back outside. It's nice to take a walk thru it and look at all the plants, birds, and statues. Very peaceful place in the center of the city. There is also a small aquarium in the back as well. Great place to take the whole family.

Yelp
The Tijuana Cultural Centre is fairly close to the San Diego and Tijuana border - a short taxi ride/uber ride of roughly $5USD should get you here. Tickets are purchased in the building next door. Many of the staff don't speak English, but they seemed to know what we wanted to purchase with limited communication. The Cultural centre has a free exhibit downstairs - washrooms are free as well. There are lots of guides/security in this area, the garden is also well maintained. It was fully empty when we went on a weekday, but their exhibits are beautiful. Photos are allowed, videos are not however. It's a clean museum with tons of information on Tijuana's history with beautiful sculptures. There is an IMAX too, but we weren't sure if our ticket included the IMAX fare.

Yelp
Great spot if you make it to Tijuana. TIPS: *It's a bit too far to walk from Avenida Revolución (which is walking distance from the border) but it's a very cheap cab ride. Took a cab from Caesar's Restaurant and it was $4. *When talking to locals/cab drivers, call it the CECUT, they'll understand better. + Three floors of art galleries. They had a Botero exhibition when I went (Fat Jesus! I'm not joking, look it up). Also, two other artists. They were all very different from one another so it was interesting. + Cheap. The art gallery tickets were something like 8 dollars for 3 people but that's just Tijuana for you. + They also had some free art to see but it was the contemporary, experimental type that I'm not too fond of. - Not as English-friendly as I'd expect. There weren't signs in English. While the people at the ticket booth spoke English, one of the girls at a cafe did not at all. The IMAX movie did not have English subtitles. I'm not complaining - they don't have an obligation to accommodate Americans obviously but I'm just surprised, considering how close they are to the US and how welcome tourists are in Tijuana.

Yelp
Was there for Tijuana Jazz and Blues fest (little of either kind of music but fine) ... Loved this museum, free, clean bathrooms.. Thank you for hosting. Saw the photography exhibit from current 1979 through 1998, sandinistas, Nicauraugua, miners, protests, etc. Great exhibit!

Yelp
If you live in the US and have a passport, a trip to this museum is very worth it. If you live in Baja close to TJ and you haven't been, why not??? This is a very very nice museum and I could not believe that it was free. It's right next to a nice mall with a couple of Cinepolis cinemas, so there is plenty of things to do in the area. There are also some really nice restaurants around. Parking here can be tricky because the museum's paid paid parking lot is small. The nice guard offered to valet my car just for me, but uh, no thanks. I just headed back to the mall across the street that charges only 20 pesos to park there and it was no big deal to cross the street. I really like the designs of this building. Many exhibits are sectioned off into separate galleries which can come off as being a little strange, but I think it's mostly because of the different exhibits having various rules about photography. All galleries are still free. One of my favorite exhibits is the one about California history, but from the Baja California perspective. This might be a little different from what you read in YOUR textbooks. I sure learned a lot, lol. But, there are some interesting artifacts I had never seen before. The explanations are presented in both Spanish and English, in a very logical timeline and the exhibits are multilevel on very gradual slopes. This makes accessible for people with disabilities and/or ambulatory issues. Very clever design.

Yelp
This place was awesome! It's a cultural center there is a huge museum but also a huge dome imax theater. We enjoyed a screening of ocesnous however our two year old ended up a bit scared so we had to leave the screening 10 minutes early. It's definitely something I recommend to come and visit.

Yelp
Never a disappointing visit. Been coming since I was a kid. Enjoy all of their expositions. Close to the border to getting here via uber is easy. People from all over the world visit this place. I love it it's so near and dear to my heart. Mexico has such rich history culture and artists.

Yelp
I came here in May 2014 and had a great experience. I visited with a classmate from my Spanish class. Our final had to be about a cultural experience and then we were to speak about it with our professor and classmates. I had researched CeCut online before my visit and was as impressed as I thought I would be. I don't remember the date it opened, but appearance wise - it seemed brand new. My classmate and I saw a lot of art that was displayed and of course practiced Spanish with the employees. If you are visiting from the U.S., don't worry about changing to pesos before your visit because they will accept US currency. Before departing we tried out the cafe and were impressed again. They serve the typical cafe drinks as well as salads, pastas and sandwiches. I will definitely return to CeCut - a gem of Tijuana.

Yelp
Very interesting place to visit. Lots of stuff for the kids, Imax theater, museums, and a lot of events. Very easy to find, right on the main street, before you get to the Plaza Rio. The worst thing is, lack of nearby parking. But you can find places, and walk a couple blocks, or take an Uber, or taxi for a few bucks.

Yelp
Amazing! I am now obsessed with Tijuana thanks to this experience with bands, art, and the kindest people I have met in a very long time. Tijuana is well on its way of being a cultural hub thanks to this amazing place. Also the movies are great and only 3 dollars! Well worth the trip.

Yelp
I spent several hours wandering around this museum and really enjoyed it. Some of the permanent exhibits were really dense information and too much to absorb in one visit but it was only a few dollars to get in so why not? The rotating art exhibit was really beautiful as well.
