Tilden Hotel

"How did it strike you on arrival? The lobby at the Tilden Hotel is small, but bright and modern, with an updated living room vibe. Stark white walls mingle with low-slung blue velvet couches, stone-topped tables, framed prints, and golden wood paneling. The hotel features work from local artists Joe Papagoda and Daniel Phill, and all guest rooms have prints from Jenny Kiker. What’s the crowd like?Laptop-toting workers hanging at the tables in the lobby with massive, expensive headphones and cups of coffee from the shop to the side of the front desk. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.In the rooms, the palettes are muted, with white plantation shutters, white walls, black trim, and framed prints above the beds. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?All rooms come with pillow-top mattresses. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The mini bar is stocked with locally produced goods, like Fred Water, Tcho Chocolate, Have'A Corn Chip, Harry's Razor and Shave Kit, Naked Condoms, and a Wine and Bottle Opener. (The moms on Yelp are not happy about the condoms.) A retail bar in the lobby by the coffee shop has swanky items like Lauren Craft Collection fine jewelry, Grown Alchemist hand and body creams, and Illesteva sunglasses. The rooms also feature ceiling fans. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. Some complain that sinks are so small it's hard to wash your face without getting water on the floor. Products are by Malin + Goetz, and the bathroom comes with Marvis toothpaste. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Wi-Fi is included in a $19 fee. Room service: Worth it?Room service comes from The Douglas Room, a cocktail bar right off the lobby that offers a limited menu. Grab snacks like Shishito peppers ($8), tater tots ($5), or go bigger with the Dougie Fresh Salad of beets, kale, walnuts, and radish ($13) or the Wagyu Tilden burger ($12). Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?The man behind the front desk is very friendly and helpful. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The gym is a couple of machines and some weights in a wee space beneath the stairs. The location also is a bit rough. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? The Tilden has just one tiny elevator. Bottom line: worth it, and why?The location is in a rough part of San Francisco, and sounds from neighboring rooms—even snoring—can come through the walls." - Elise Craig

Google
I highly recommend the Tilden hotel. The staff are wonderful and extremely friendly and accommodating. They went over and above for me on several occasions during my stay, directions, booking Ubers and generally taking really good care of me as their guest. The location is superb, just minutes away from Union square. The room was clean, comfortable and we'll decorated. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for your stay in San Francisco. You won't be disappointed.

I'm constantly booking last-minute hotels in SF for business travel, and this is the only budget-friendly place I've found in the whole Bay Area that was a pleasant surprise. They've made a real effort to make the decor contemporary and appealing; it has a hipster vibe and is impeccably clean. Had a spacious room with two beds facing away from the street on the second floor. Totally quiet. Such a soft and comfortable mattress with good linens. It's an old building so it's not perfectly noise-proof, but it didn't bother me. Comes with the territory in big cities. It is next door to a homeless shelter, but that had zero negative impact on my stay. Great location, really great price (threw in the $50 for parking because I could book a package online), charming style, no complaints. Just what I needed, and I'll definitely stay here again.

Google
2 star amenities with a 4 star price. They hit the aesthetic of a boutique hotel, but failed to deliver on some of the obvious aspects of hotel comfort. I've stayed in hotels all over the world, and if I shell out $350 for one night I expect to not have to hear the quiet conversation of people in the next room in explicit detail... there isn't a threshold on the dividing doors between rooms, which gives you that "paper thin wall" feeling. Also, no room service until 5pm and not at all on Sundays?!, and $70 to park the car with the hotel for one night... luckily there is a public garage around the corner for half the price. The bed was comfortable and the staff were friendly. Let's just say I was incredibly underwhelmed. The big takeaway is that it's not a terrible hotel, just terrible value for your dollar...

Google
Actually it's 3.5 stars for me, as the room faced the street and it was loud. Other than that, it was a wonderful hotel stay. We live in an urban area and downtown SF is the loudest place I've stayed. The windows in our room did a poor job of toning down the horn honking and loud crazy people. The room itself was clean and lovely. It had the most wonderful high back chair, when used with the ottoman just screamed sit a spell and read. Loved that chair. The whole place has a lot of historic charm. We even took some time to venture down to see the plaque for the room where jazz vocal legend Billy Holiday got busted for drugs. The location is pretty good too if you plan on venturing out and seeing the sights and using public transit.

Google
I'm giving this a 5 star review because I had a wonderful experience. I was worried after reading some reviews but did not experience one negative thing. I stayed in a room with my friend, mother in law, and 2 month old infant. I did not hear my neighbors through the walls, as previous reviewer's had complained about. The outside noise was not as bad as some reviews make it sound, just close the window and turn on the fan. I sleep with white noise for my baby so that could be why I didn't hear anything else. The room was comfortable, charming and clean. We all liked the ambience and mentioned how lovely and cool the whole place was. We all slept great. The main reason I gave 5 stars is because the staff was incredible. Literally every person on staff was beyond helpful and kind. I would stay here again because of how great the people were during my stay.

Google
The hotel is in decent shape, centrally located and has a very friendly staff. My only complaints are below... 1) paper thin walls means you get to hear all the noises. Could hear crisply almost every word our neighbors said along with the lovely trash compactor outside our window in the alley next to the hotel that had an alarm that would go off for hours at night. 2) No AC in the room and the only heat source is a single old style radiator mounted to the floor on the opposite side of the room from the bathroom. For the price... it's not a terrible place if you can sleep like a rock. If you are a light sleeper... spend a little more and stay somewhere else.

We purchased rooms for this hotel on Travelzoo and were not sure what we would find. Well, the staff over our 5 day 4 night stay were exceptional. Thank you Tre, Ayana, Joseph and Mario. I even asked them as about their training. The rooms are lovely. Not large, but serviceable. The bathrooms are decorated circa 1950, which is cute.||The restaurant was good. I will definitely stay here again. And Union Squareis only 2 blocks away!

Google
This hotel is okay. We were there in the middle of a heatwave and there was no air conditioning but I've heard that is pretty common in San Francisco. There was a ceiling fan in the bedroom. The room was large which was nice and the bed was comfortable. However, there were a number of annoyances: -The mini fridge barely kept things cooler than room temperature, even at the highest setting -We consistently had to ask for our room to be cleaned even though we didn't have a 'do not disturb' sign up -No microwave to warm leftovers up -The room key said the bar/kitchen was open at 2PM but it doesn't open until 4PM -The workout room is TINY and had a strong garbage smell -There's no actual desk to work at so you have to use the TV stand

Yelp
I booked Tilden Hotel through Expedia because it was one of the only 4 star hotels I could find at a decent price. On the day of our stay, I decided to look through the Yelp reviews and became super worries about the quality of the place. Well, for me, the Tilden hotel was most definitely a 4 star hotel! It is nothing like the Hilton, but it is definitely not as bad as many of the reviews make it sound! Check in was at 3pm. The lobby is cute. They have board games, couches, and good music. There is a $30/day resort fee that everyone has to pay. However, you do get $10 to use towards the bar, free drip coffee, access to all amenities, and discounts at the cafe. The elevator is tinnnny! A little sketch. The room was kinda small but nothing unmanageable. There was a very vintage feel to the room and bathroom which I liked a lot. TV had all basic channels. Sheets were clean and chocolate was left on the bed. There was a bunch of food and drinks for purchase much of which came from local companies! The bathroom had soap, shampoo and conditioner but not individual size. I really didn't care. Room had a hair dryer, closet, and safe. Everything you need. I only have two complaints about this hotel: 1) location - it's right in the middle of the tenderloin so it can get a little sketch 2) HVAC - I'm sure the building has some kind of central heating system because it wasn't that cold. However, the rooms themselves only have radiators. We turned ours on and nothing happened. Then 6 hours later, in the middle of the night, we woke up to a loud screeching sound from the radiator and the room was HOT. Since there's no AC control we just had to turn on a fan.

Yelp
I was in San Francisco for a work trip. This hotel was recommend by my company so I didn't do any research before booking. BIG MISTAKE! The room is old - wall, baseboards and doors peeling off. The bathroom is really old - see pictures - the bathtub and towels were dirty ! No AC, only a ceiling fan, and the closet has no door. I was planning to stay 3 days, but after the first night I switched to another hotel.

Yelp
My favorite hotel in San Francisco- great location, great staff, great water pressure. Pros: -Near everything -Coffee maker in room -Fridge in room -Closets -Nicest staff (especially Ayana, went above and beyond- my flight landed early before check in and I didn't have to kill time got a room ASAP, helped with my heat on a cold night, hooked it up with extra coffee- super friendly 24/7 no matter what I needed, everyone was) -Hipster and retro -Comfortable bed -Clean -Safes in rooms -Affordable AF -Amazing water pressure -Security -Alert front desk staff Cons: -No thermostat -Close to Tenderloin but even if you stay at the Ritz in SF you step outside your door and you're surrounded by homeless and crazies- it's downtown SF in 2020 so basically, stay out of SF if you don't want to see weirdos -Slow internet -Limited TV channels I've stayed at the Palace, W, Herbert, Bartlett, Huntington- the full gamut of hotels in San Francisco...SF is outrageously expensive and you can pay for the W but why? What do you get really? A view? Stay here instead and spend your money on seafood and burritos.

Yelp
The hotel is very central in San Francisco. Its clean and nice but the room is small. But like I say its very central and the price is quite reasonable when you book it through booking.com. I suggest parking your car in the garage nearby which is 1 block away. The people who works there are very friendly and helpful. Please note that if you come after a certain time the hotel entrance door is lock and you will need to ring the bell to get in. Otherwise the place is nice and room. Its nice to that the room have ceiling fan.

Yelp
I loved my stay at the Tilden Hotel. The location while in Tenderloin which is not ideal, the location is actually close to all the conference centers and shopping center. The staff were amazing. Great conversationalists and very helpful. Very "real" people. Even the housekeepers said hello with a smile as they walked down the hall. It is an old hotel. So the bathroom is a bit small (very), but it has character. The room was perfect. Comfy Beds and fridge. Enough lighting. Tv with a ton of channels. The place was clean. Which in my book outweighs the small bathroom. Spotless room. Oh and yes the elevator is small! The cafe was great. Again friendly staff. Amazing veggie scones. Amazing. And great coffee. The Douglas room has great drinks and tasty food. I recommend the burger and the mule noir.

Yelp
So, you're gonna laugh at what I'm about to ask right now? Is there anyone experienced strange encounters staying in this hotel? Because I had. We stayed at room 914, and the bedside lamp turned on on its own and turned back off. I'm still trying to figure rational answer maybe weird wiring. Or if it's just a ghost playing, it's pretty cool too. Just wondering if anyone else experienced that. That's not why I gave 3 stars. Room was clean but very basic. Has a tiny window and is so dark. Insulation is not so good that we can hear people from the next door. The amount that we are paying doesn't even include breakfast but they gave us $20 credit for food. The restaurant at the lobby has good quality food especially breakfast. Lobby staffs are so nice. Need to know that the area outside of the hotel is filled with homeless tents. Inside hotel is nice though. Overall stay is just average.

Yelp
Got booked with this hostel thing through priceline after paying for a 4 star hotel. Huge expectations for 3 nights of SF travel turned downhill from then. We checked reviews on this hotel and got the bad vibe of it, asked priceline to rebook or reschedule for different "legitimate" 4 star hotel about 30 min after booking but they simply said it's non refundable/exchangeable. We thought it was unfair, so reached out to the higher management and even wrote a letter to executive office to rebook to no avail. They said they stand behind their star rating system and this hotel will work to "exceed" our expectations. HAHA. We kinda put the worries aside, and forgot about it until we arrived at this hotel, hoping to see a decent, not-so-terrible hotel. The first impression upon arrival was that 1. location was pretty ghetto - many homeless people on the street 2. noisy - party like vibe at the lobby 3. small and old squeaky elevator that barely fits 2 people at most. 4. there was a fuckn bug on the wall. 5. bed was super uncomfy. Imagine a spring bed at a hostel. 6. no sound proof - every knob turns and water and flushing sound comes like a thunderstorm from next room. 7. very old furnishing and chipped paint. We came down to the check in counter and switched to a different room, but pretty much same quality. I'm only giving 1 star instead of 0 for 2 reasons. 1. 1-star review is minimum. 2. the staff were pretty welcoming and actually understood all the concerns and agreed to cancel our stay. But because of all the hassle of cancelling the stay at midnight, we went thru hell trying to book different hotel at the last moment. we literally walked across to hilton which we luckily found a room to stay that night.

Yelp
Stylish hotel located within 5 minute walk to Union Square. Beds were comfortable and clean. Staff was friendly. Great burger in The Douglas Room and Tilden Cafe served the perfect cappuccino. Very nice coffee. We brought our own cards and hung out in the lounge. Only down point was the room faced the street which was very loud, but with so much to do during our days we still slept great.

Yelp
Please read this review if you want an honest understanding of a two-night experience at the Tilden Hotel. The hotel via photos looks much more modern, much more renovated and clean. It is NOT the same in person. When you arrive, you are not greeted with someone assisting you with your bags (my partner even had to help a paraplegic woman open the door and carry her bags since no one at reception got up when they saw her arrive), and they do not show you to your room. Fine. Emoloyees were friendly in any case when communicating with clients staying with them. The room itself is old, with the paint and wood on doors peeling, even the wallpaper was coming apart. The bathroom offered you one bar of soap, and a small size of lotion. Shampoo, conditioner, and bath soap are all installed in the shower and are not individual. Upon arriving we noticed we had a connecting room, and the door was not locked. We opened it and had complete access to another room. We locked it and asked the concierge to kindly ensure no one opens the door on their end (if there is someone in the next room), and the concierge answered us "I don't think there are connecting rooms in this building. But let me check." Fast forward to 1AM, we are jolted up and awake by someone vigorously attempting to unlock the connecting door and get into our room. You can understand our fear as we are only one block from an area with a lot of homeless people, as well as the fact that you can pretty much enter the hotel and come and go as you please. No extra security, no special card to get upstairs, nothing. I proceeded to call the lobby (I then realized there is nowhere in the entire room which lists the number to contact the lobby or any person working in the hotel). I had to ask them to please find out what the situation was - they called me back shortly after saying it was another client staying in the hotel who was making sure SHE was safe. Apart from this - the bathroom had some mysterious (appeared to be blood) red stains on the wall near the mirror. They were not so helpful when arriving and leaving with baggage. Closet space also does not have any space or shelves to lay out your clothing. SUPER noisy. Would not recommend to anyone. Uneasy, unhelpful, and just unpleasant.

Yelp
I am on a business trip and was transferred here by the hotel where I booked a room because they were oversold. This IS NOT a business class hotel. It is closer to the Super 8 which is around the corner. It is NOT in Union Square as advertised. It is in the Tenderloin (read Red Light district). It is NOT safe to walk toward Market from here. The room is very basic. There is no reasonable place to sit down and do some work. Wi-Fi works, but is very slow if you try to use it. As a business traveler, I'm used to disposable soap in the bathroom. Not so here. Bottles in a locked down tray. No coffee in the room. Only tea. No coffee in the lobby. Not a business class hotel.

Yelp
STAY AWAY!!!...The front desk staff at this hotel is horrible. BARKING DOG in the adjacent room from us. The resolve was to argue with me about the dog being with the wedding party which I was apart of HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE she had the nerve to tell me I should've stayed at the Hilton across the street and that my complaint s were in vain about her because she will still be working here regardless of my dissatisfaction. Her name was MEL we got in a heated exchange, due to the fact that she was RUDE, COMBATIVE and ARGUMENTATIVE and has no idea about the meaning of customer service. It's bad enough you're staying in the middle of skid Row homeless central with tons of beggers and homeless people asking you for money the second you step out the door THIS HOTEL IS A DUMP TO BOOT. SMELLS LIKE A GYM LOCKER ROOM. NO SECURITY (which is odd for the area)

Yelp
Had an amazing time here. The staff was very pleasant especially the door man (black guy) and the bartender who's showed us the back patio and penthouse. The room was clean and cozy. Super boutiquey and had a lot of history. (Once was the Mark Twain hotel)

Yelp
I've never (ever) checked into a hotel and checked out 10 minutes later - that is until we walked into this hotel. -18th century check-in (they use index cards to manage reservations?) -super sketchy neighborhood (homeless folks, dirty, smelly area) -elevator fits 2 people max with luggage -paper thin walls (you can hear people sniffle!) -halls are dim and eery We checked out and went around the corner to check into a Hilton. Be warned.

Yelp
Had high expectations, but felt cramped and the hotel's amenities didn't make up for it. Pros: Front desk staff nice. Lobby is well appointed. Good location. Refined style. Beautiful bathrooms. Cons: small rooms, I mean, kid-small. No air conditioning: I know this is common but it's way too hot in the rooms for this. Elevator is equally cramped and hot, and actually stopped working all day one day. The cafe thing in the lobby serves iffy coffee, which is complimentary on some reservations but you couldn't pay me to drink it. It was closed along with the elevator one day anyway without notice. Odd notes: Fitness room leaves something to be desired but it's fun enough.

Yelp
Hesitant to give it a 3, I paid 245.00/last minute booking for one night. Room 910, I did pay 50.00 for valet parking overnight, streets are not an option, tons of street folks.. If you know what I mean.. And crowded. Pros: Welcoming staff Checkout time is 12:00 Fold out sofa bed in living room, if your suite has a king bed-felt like springs mostly. Tiny fridge, like 12x14 Decent bed, fresh sheets, ok pillows. Enormous bathroom/big suites Lots of lighting options New carpet/updated paint throughout Quiet considering where you are staying. Cons: Parking sux, expect to pay 38.00-50.00 for overnight. The smallest elevator Ive ever seen, and creepy narrow hallways, felt like Alice n wonderland. Stairway exists for all 9 floors. Good luck. Door handle to bathroom door was not attached, you cant close it from the inside, it falls off in your hand. There is visible dust in some places. Some white substance smeared on the bathroom door, sticky, broken handle, ewwhh. Wth? Double locks to the front door, and a single lock from the living room to the bedroom. Over all, a decent experience, but it's not a place I would stay with again. Just wasnt worth the money. Interesting place with a art deco vibe.

Yelp
I purchased this room using Priceline, and they sold this as a 4-star hotel. (On a scale of 5) We are going to have to agree to disagree on that. Don't get me wrong. It's decent, it's clean, has a cute lobby, soft linens.... But in the original room I was placed in, I could hear a man in the room next to me snore, loud enough to keep me aweke. On the other side I could here my neighbor clear his throat. I'm sure that when I called Priceline on the phone earlier to complain, my neighbors could hear that. I can hear sirens outside. At some point in the evening some neighbors started toking up. The entire 2nd floor of the hotel smelled like weed. I have no problem with people partaking... But the amount was ludicrous. My room smelled, the hallway smelled and I heard people screaming about the smell, so I wasn't the only one unhappy. (And I should've said something to the front desk, but was tired.) However, the next day, the staff was great and did everything they could to accommodate me, including switching me to a room far away from the snoring guy, so that helped. They offered to refund my money, but I didn't have the time to find a new place, but I appreciate all of their effort. Another complaint, and if this had been the only problem, it would have been minor, but the size of the sink in the bathroom was tiny. I'I tried to wash my face in it, and it's so small, water splashed all over the floor. (The sink is shoebox sized.) Also, The closet is nice and roomy, but lacks proper lighting. I get it, it's an older hotel, but the closet is so dark I don't even want to put my suitcase in there because I won't be able to see into it. (Closet had one of those small bluish tinted LED lights in it, it comes on by motion activation.) I do not recommend this hotel as a 4-star option. But the staff is nice and very accommodating.

Yelp
Pros: Location: Union square, walking distance from pretty much everything. Clean! no signs of pests and or previous hotel guests They give a complimentary $10 credit towards the bar, so I got some wine :) also free coffee and tea from their cafe. Friendly hotel staff. Wifi Cons: Small bathroom: Not bad for two people. The bathroom is pretty small but very nicely designed and the room I stayed in was a spacious room with closet and queen bed Smallest elevator EVER: not the worst thing but just incase you have alot of luggage you may be going up alone lol No parking so you have to valet I think its almost 50$ but honestly its SF what do you expect. You can call for your car whenever you want. I dont get why their are low stars for this hotel- and I am pretty critical. If youre looking for a grand 5 star hotel, this isnt it. But it is clean, cute and boutique-y. Also the main lobby was gorgeous. BTW im seeing reviews about the place being in a "dirty" part of the city..... if youve never been to SF there are homeless people in ALL parts of the city so yea there may be some homeless people around but if you just walk towards the center its really no big deal. also saw a review about them "leaving your valeted car on the street for homeless people to break into" is FALSE. I walked to my car because i didnt want them bringing it to the hotel, but i wanted to grab something and it was in a huge parking garage. also, my AC/Heater was working just fine and i was there 12/2018 it was pretty cold outside.

Yelp
March 2017 stay: Pros: Fantastic front desk staff along with the doorman, great location in San Francisco, great price and comfy bed. Cons: The bathroom is super small, one elevator and claustrophobic stairs, poor weather stripping around the door which lead to the room being drafty Overall good stay and would book here again

Yelp
The staff here is the heartbeat of what a good, safe establishment should be. Trey. Joseph.Sam. Joseph is a wonderful from desk person. If I could steal Sam as a bartender, I would. He can make drinks equal to those served in a bar charging triple the price. Trey makes us all feel safe, and he gives the best hugs.

Yelp
This is officially my least favorite part about my stay in San Francisco. I didn't truly believe it was in a bad neighborhood with the Hilton being right across from the Tilden ..... we learned that the Tenderloin district is home to several homeless and is a very filthy and poor area. The first impression walking into the hotel was okay, the style is modern and minimalistic. I do believe the front desk needs to be updated with a better check in system. Ashley was out front desk person who was extremely helpful and kind! After we checked in we got into the elevator, that's built for one person.... nice and snug when there is four people in an elevator. We get to our room and it's hot! I had read that said there is no central AC they also m it was no big deal. Definitely was a big deal I can't imagine what it's like when it gets hot in San Francisco because all we had was the feeling fan and open Windows. We slept comfortable but not great. In mornings we would smell food from our window from the restaurant right next door. Sure bacon is always a great way to wake up but it smelled mostly of grease. All in all really think about going elsewhere!!

Yelp
Just dropped my mother in law and toddler off at the hotel. The loading zone was occupied by a drug dealer selling drugs to people stopping in front of the hotel. I get it. The neighborhood has drug dealers and homeless but to not have an attendant at 3pm in the afternoon on a Sunday to keep the loading zone clear of this is unacceptable. Also, the other day I was picking up my family and a man that had just purchased food in their cafe was being asked to leave the front area as he ate his food. Let him eat his $10 parfait in peace. So annoying.

Yelp
Never stay here. Really.. like just don't do it. 1. THE SOUND of the street.. you will hear it all night. 2. The room is small. 3. The bed was not comfortable. 4. The bathroom was tiny. 5. Did I mention being unable to sleep from the sound on the street.

Yelp
This place was average. Parking: It is difficult to find parking in this area. Especially if you do not want to walk back and forth with your luggage, so our friends and I decided to get the valet parking. It cost around 40 dollars; however, we were told that it is cheaper and more convenient to do valet since HMT allows you to go in and out of the hotel. I am saying this because the same person at the front desk informed us that the parking garage close by charges at almost the same rate, but you cannot go in and out of the parking lot. In other words, you will have to pay again when you re - enter the parking lot. Hotel & Hotel Room: - The hotel itself is okay for its price. You get what you paid for. - The elevator is tiny. - No air-conditioning. At this time of the year, I do not mind not having air-conditioning. - The bathroom looks outdated. It functions, so we did not really care. - The bed was not as comfortable, but to re-iterate, you get what you paid for. - Being on a budget, wanting to save money on gas, and being close to several food and sight - seeing locations were the reasons why I picked this hotel. Customer Service: - They were great! If you do valet, once you are checked in and decide to go out, be sure to call them ahead so they can get your car on time.

Yelp
Stayed the night at this cute boutique hotel that made me feel like I was in an old movie. The front desk staff were friendly and checked us in right away. Their grab-and-go breakfast from the cafe offered hard boiled eggs, an apple or an orange, and a slice of lemon loaf. I knocked off a couple stars as the valet parking was $49. Also, it's just down the street from Glide Memorial where a lot of homeless gather. When the guy checking us in gave us a map of the area, he drew a line and said, "You don't want to go this way ... go that way instead." Overall, our stay was fine.

Yelp
In short, a cool pre-war building but with one tiny elevator smack-dab in the middle of skid row. This is a good example of the power of Yelpers pretty much getting the rating right. I'm going with 2 of 5 stars because I definitely would not stay here again. First, you should note that this hotel is in a terrible neighborhood. I grew up in NYC in the '80s and there's a very similar post-apocalyptic vibe going on here. There are junkies and very aggressive pan-handlers on every block. Human feces on the sidewalk. It's a neighborhood of pawn shops, liquor stores, halfway houses, needle exchanges dotted with a few hotels and restaurants. The most annoying thing about this hotel is that it has one tiny elevator that not only all guests use but the staff/crew have to use it too. Again, one tiny elevator for hundreds of guests, housekeeping, etc. WTF. Super small bathroom. Staff seemed aloof and unenthused. Apparently there was a food/beverage credit that I was never informed of. Avoid.

Yelp
I stayed there for a few days and did have a great experiences. But after I started getting lots of emails as they added me to their email list. I have tried to unsubscribe multiple times. There is no unsubscribe button - I think as required by law. You have to reply and type unsubscribe. I have done this time after time but they have not unsubscribed me. If you don't want to be bothered by tons of marketing emails from them, don't stay there or make a reservation. In today's world of technology it is super easy to use a program that allows for instant unsubscribing. I am tired of my inbox having one of their emails sent to me a few times a week. Don't stay there.

Yelp
Let's rate this place on the things they can control. They're located where they're located. That being said, I was incredibly impressed by the entire staff here- start to finish. It wasn't just one or two staff members either. I dealt with roughly 8-9 different employees and every single one was attentive and very kind. Front desk staff, bartenders, housekeepers- all of them! Smiles and service left and right. Love it. Excellent job Tilden crew!

Yelp
Tilden Hotel is centrally located in downtown San Francisco. The staff is very friendly and accommodating they even gave me a happy birthday wine and snack basket. The room is a little smaller than expected. There is hardly any drawers for clothes. The AC is a fan in the heater is a radiator that did not work. luckily it wasn't that cold that we didn't need to use it as much. The other negative thing is that they charge you a amenity fee of $10 to use the fitness and for food and drink credit daily. Even if you don't get is that you still get charged. Looks like they are in the middle of some are you decorating.

Yelp
The Hotel is clean and neat but lacks necessities. The rooms are tiny with everything crammed inside. The downstairs lounge is tiny as well. NO ONSITE PARKING (extra cost). The RESORT FEE is to question for (75 dollars for two nights). No continental breakfast. This is more of a crash room. As i repeat, it is clean and in an okay area but it needs more!

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about this hotel. Mel was extremely nice to me when booking the room. Fernando and Johny were awesome at check in. We were upgraded to a suite because they heard me say it was my boyfriends birthday. Not long after getting to our room there was a knock at the door with balloons, a card and a bottle of wine. When checking out we were asked how our stay was and if there is anything the hotel can do better. In our opinion no, the room was clean and quiet and staff was amazing. We did not mind the small elevator at all. We would definitely stay here again.

Yelp
I was so incredibly worried after reading these reviews. Thankfully my experience here is great. My room looks exactly as it did on the website. Yes, its an old building and I love that. Yes there is a radiator for heat--so you might be out of luck if you were expecting to really control your temperature. You can really hear the building sounds and through the walls, but Ive had that at super expensive hotels too. Who cares that the shampoo is in a dispenser? It works, and smells great. Did you need to take it home? I don't have a microwave which is fine. I have the Keurig and there are two pods of coffee. There is a tiny fridge. Yes its in the Tenderloin, but that was clear to me. Yes, sketchy but if you can manage in cities you will be fine. I walked all over and had no issues--take a car service if it freaks you out. You are so close to Union square--directly behind the Hilton. They are doing some cafe construction in the front but it was fine. I slept really well and the bath and shower were super.

Yelp
I've stayed at a lot of hotels when traveling all over the country when going to conventions or baseball games. My stay at the Tilden was during a recent business trip to San Francisco. Because I was so busy with work, I only spent a few hours at the hotel to sleep and shower. I'm thankful I was so busy. First, the positives. Joseph at the front desk is extremely friendly and the exact kind of person you want at a hotel front desk. The rooms are very clean, which is probably the most important aspect of a hotel stay. Now, the negatives. The hotel feels like an old hotel that was given a face lift, but just can't be completely modernized because of location. There is only one elevator for a nine floor hotel. It's a very small elevator, too. Three coworkers and myself barely fit in the elevator, neither of us had luggage. There's no thermostat in the room, this might be due to the SF climate. There was a ceiling fan (which I've never seen in a hotel room before.) I had to open the window in order to let cool air in. Also, no microwave. Is the Tilden the worst hotel I've ever stayed in? No. Is it terrible? Not exactly. I just feel it's an average hotel that is overpriced. If money isn't an issue and you won't be in the room other than sleep and showers, go for it. If you're on family vacation and really value comfort while also trying to budget your trip, you can find better options nearby that are slightly closer to Union Square and further from Tenderloin.

Yelp
9/10 clean, 9/10 customer service, 10/10 location, 9/10 price Over all I had really good experience in my stay. You get a lot for your money compare to similar hotel in the area (I Visit in many hotels around) Enjoy!

Yelp
Got the Tilden Hotel after using Priceline and selecting a 4 star hotel. This is not a 4 star hotel by normal standards. I stay in allot of hotels all over the country and world. In any average USA city this hotel would be considered a 2 star hotel. I have not stayed in any other hotel in San Francisco downtown to really compare, so maybe by San Francisco standard it is a 4 star? I have stayed in the area like Oakland, Napa and San Jose. Most of those other area those are considered a 3 star hotel. They all have a desk, dresser and chair. They all have wall art, air conditioning and twice the room space. The Tilden has none of this. The Tilden rooms are small. There is no parking or free breakfast, expect to pay $40 to park a car in a near by garage per night or even more for valet parking. When exiting the front door, don't turn right, the homeless are relentless there. Turing left is the better side of town, but my wife was scared driving to the place as we saw allot of homeless on the streets. For the money, it is not bad and if you are willing to comprise the lack of amenities for the location, then it is an okay choice in a relatively okay location. The rooms are clean enough, but it is just the bare essentials at the Tilden. The place is in between a Motel 8 and a low end Comfort Inn.

Yelp
Their site says they have a "Best Rate Guarantee", where if you can find a better rate for them or similar hotels online they will match. This apparently isn't real. I found a deal for $178.00 per night for them online and called to book directly through them with their "guarantee". Instead I was told over and over that the rate I was currently looking at online didn't exist and they could only book me at $203.00 per night. I instead choose to not stay at a hotel that doesn't honor the policies they have plastered all over their website. That seems really sketchy. Just don't have that policy listed if you won't honor it.

Yelp
It's okay - rooms are mostly clean - beds are almost comfortable - they offer a $20 food and beverage credit which they didn't honor only giving us $20 for one night instead of $40 for the two nights we were there so we unknowingly owed money - staff is okay, most kinda helpful, one shorter, younger man w/ curly hair and glasses oh helpful at all. - free mini-bar is snacks. They don't automatically refill. You have to ask. NO AC is the biggest complaint so it's HOT. Would I stay here again, no. Would I refer to friends, no.

Yelp
Not the best area, but the place is alright. I wouldn't go back again, but they do an okay job of keeping stuff up to date to the best they can for being in a city. My back view of my room was a large pigeon center with feces all over, I was woken up at 2 am but a neighbor pounding on another's door, and then 5 am for the large radiator in my room going off. I suggest turning this off before going to bed or be prepared to wake up at 5. When I first arrived at 4pm, I was told by the front desk that they were going to check with the cleaning crew to see if my room was ready, 55 minutes later, it was ready. The "workout room" is a small closet space with two machines, if there is another working out in there, it's best to wait until they're finished. No joke. I'd look elsewhere.

Yelp
The staff was great and very friendly that's why the two stars. First off, they advertise a caffe and bar lounge that wasn't even open yet. Lobby area fantastic. Beyond that, not so much. There is only one elevator with 8 floors that only fits 2 ppl. That was annoying. paint job and smell of walking through halls nasty. Room upon arrival very small, boxy smell. Reminded me on a low quality studio apartment. Tv didn't work. That first night we encountered a roach crawling across my pillow. Soooo disgusting. I couldn't even sleep after that. Staff was nice enough to give us another room next door but still felt gross. At least that room was a bit larger and not so stuffy. It's an old hotel so piping was super loud throughout the night. Walls thin, you can hear all your neighbors vividly. Unfortunately we roomed next door to a loud family Whose kids kept crying and fighting the entire night. Overall, not the best experience and false advertising. The Hilton is right next door. Stay there. then just visit the Tilden for the lounge and cafe when it opens.

Yelp
I booked this hotel through Priceline, which had it rated as 4 out of 5 stars. I disagree with this rating. There was much to be desired with this hotel. Having arrived earlier than the scheduled check-in time, the initial staff member we dealt with told us no rooms were available. He proceeded to repeat over and over again the there would be an early check-in fee. He seemed inexperienced, uncaring, and unsympathetic. While I understand that things like not having any rooms available for early check-in may be out of the staff member's control, his tone and delivery have room for improvement. To my knowledge, there was no A/C in the room. We had to open the windows, which had no screens! While we did not travel with young children, I can only imagine how scary it would be for any parent. The bathroom was very small and had no ventilation. The sink was so tiny that water splashed all over the floor when I washed my face. Despite all of this, I will say that in general, the staff was very pleasant. It was just unfortunate that the first person we encountered at this hotel seemed incompetent. The location was ideal for good dining and shopping.

Yelp
Good place to visit San Fran when in the summer. Don't expect to have a warm hotel room in the winter when visiting relatives for Christmas. The rooms are by design heated by individual hot steam radiators, but the steam is turned off by the hotel management at a master level. When asked, the hotel staff indicated that some guests leave them on by accident or intention, and so the staff turns the boiler valve on at night, off during the day. The radiators are turned off 24x7 and not turned on at night. During my stay the steam radiators were never made live, and were as cold as a rock regardless of the late hours that I arrived back or the early morning starts. When in a room with a broken (ajar and hosed) window letting in above-normal cold, this was a very uncomfortable experience. Sure, I got an extra blanket, but I shouldn't have had to be exposed to chills like that. Reporting the issue, including the broken window, led to finding out the above explanation. The window was never fixed either. The place is nice otherwise, I liked the old time atmosphere and environment. When I was checked in, received a $10 credit at the bar, but didn't get a chance to use it. It might have warmed me up some! Won't stay there again.

Yelp
1. No working elevator I'm on 6th floor 2. NO AIR CONDITIONING IN ENTIRE HOTEL 3. They give you 1 towel. Do you really need more

Yelp
I stayed here in November for my birthday, it was a great stay. It didn't have AC which i thought was weird coming from South Florida, but the ceiling fan sufficed. The breakfast was great and the rooms were clean. In a great location. I'd def stay again.

Yelp
The picture of the Room is NOT THE TRUTH !! NO AIR CONDITIONING !! Dirty elevator should of been a sign from the get go. Staff was nice!

Yelp
When I left my my Apple AirPods on the credenza upon check out, they mysteriously never turned up. Despite multiple calls, an in-person visit to the lobby where I waited 20+ minutes for a housekeeping check that never occurred, plus a voice mail to the general manager, none of the lazy hire staff ever got back to me. This hotel is unethically run with front desk staff who don't live up to their repeated promises to call back. This complaint lays at the feet of the general manager, who never returned my voice mail. The general area around the hotel is also the worst area of San Francisco as it reeks of urine, is filled with the noise of fighting homeless at night, and feels unsafe in the wee hours.

Yelp
Very nice boutique hotel. I wasn't able to see the garden due to renovations, but the photos look nice. The rooms are great, black and white decor, it really feels like a place that Mark Twain would have stayed. I stayed in a suite, which had a nice little sitting area/front room when you walk in. Cons: the televisions had standard definition channels coming in. Why have nice HD televisions and then waste them with a crappy picture. I know that nobody goes on vacation to watch TV, but many of us turn on the TV when we get back to the room at night and do some work, it just detracts from the high quality feel of the property. Another con is the one elevator that will take so long to get to the 9th floor that it will haunt your dreams! Overall, a good place. I'll stay here again.

Yelp
I had an experience here that could've ended up very, very bad. I checked in to the hotel and I was given A room that was occupied by other Guest. Luckily when I walked in to the room they weren't in there all I seen were their belongings. I was given another room and a wine bottle to stay quiet.. I guess that's my fault for trying to go the cheap route.

Yelp
Homeless camping out feet from the entrance. Including two tents located on the sode of the building. Floors extremely dirty. Small rooms. Not the safest location. I booked on a room occupancy of 4. I was advised this was a "kid" friendly hotel. There were condoms in the Snack tray to purchase!

Liam E.

Yelp
While the location is what most people would call convenient, the housekeeping is horrifying. We arrived and pulled down the sheets to find what I am going to guess was stains from sex, some blood, and pubic hairs. I highly, HIGHLY recommend checking the state of the sheets before getting in bed there. The only reason they are getting two stars is for the way in which this was handled by the person at the front desk. Other people complain about the noise, homeless etc. but what are you honestly expecting? The hotel is ground zero Tenderloin and should be treated as such. Do your research about the area first if you are somewhat intimidated by inner city locations, and you'll be fine.
