11 Best Coffee Shops in Vancouver | Condé Nast Traveler

"Wood floors, white walls, and high ceilings give Timbertrain’s Gastown location a light, airy feel. The current trend toward lighter roasts is in full swing here, and the carefully selected crops are roasted at Timbertrain’s Depot roastery near Commercial Drive. (That location also hosts workshops about everything from latte art to proper home brewing.) You can choose from a seasonal rotation of individually made brews at the pour-over station, but aficionados from near and far flock to the Gastown shop for the legendary nitro cold brew, which is made by soaking the coarsely ground coffee in cold water for hours, then pressurizing it. The result is a brew as smooth and creamy as a glass of Guinness." - Jennifer Van Evra

We popped into Timbertrain yesterday and had a mixed experience. The space is cool, not quite comfortable or cozy, but nice design. The food selection is limited and the almond croissant was pretty good. My wife tried the flat white with oat milk, which was really well done. I had the pour over, and felt it was a little thin. Not sure if it was the bean or technique. Service was also mixed, one of the stash members was super friendly, and then the other fella was quite grumpy and not friendly at all. For the price point, I wouldn’t return.

Google
Definitely a must visit for coffee and matcha lovers! Husband says coffee flavour was strong and aromatic. I had the matcha, so good and none of that watered down nonsense. We also had a ginger cookie which was surprisingly a 10/10! If you love soft, chewy, not too sweet ginger cookies then PLEASE try it! Maybe get one for yourself because husband and I were fighting for that cookie 🤤 vibes and decor were great, could see myself reading or meeting with a friend here. Staff were friendly, service was a bit slow but that’s because of the slow drip. Definitely worth the wait!

I freaking love this cafe. So many unique touches that make it damn obvious that the owners truly care. For starters, the Rolodex of cafe-goers’ loyalty cards is adorable. Made me smile immediately upon entry! Then there’s the seating. It’s an intriguing mix of benches and hidden nooks, that makes the environment all the more cozy. Lastly — the spro. Just divine. Made with great care, and just the kind of rich cocoa-y notes that make my heart sing. Would recommend Timbertrain in a heartbeat! It’s gotta be one of Vancouver’s best.

Google
Another great visit to another timbertrain location. Again, staff was helpful and patient with questions. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a bag of cosmic candy beans or even better yet, try it as a pour over. It’s super sweet and tea like. No harsh flavors.

Google
Popped in for a matcha as I was in the area for an appointment. I did look up cafes in the area and this one caught my eye for the unique name and space. The seating arrangement is cozy and I would definitely try some of the baked goodies next time, more specifically the carrot walnut loaf!

Google
We had espresso tonic, iced mocha, and a blueberry scone. Everything was good but nothing wildly special or out of the ordinary. It's a nice space (good for a small group- not a big one). So far this is the only place that does an espresso tonic that I've found in Vancouver so far! It was good, but just plain espresso and tonic-- not even an orange rind garnish.

Yelp
I love coffee and this is an amazing place whether just to pick up the beans or have a sip there. Their beans are great for pour over and the staff will be able to tell you what you need for whatever you make. Generally, great friendly service. Ambience is what a local coffee shop should be. Check out the pics

Yelp
I feel like Timbertrain is so underrated compared to nemesis coffee (imo). The ambiance is super nice, the coffee is great, and I personally love that it's more of a traditional coffee shop. ***What I ordered ~ **Pumpkin Spice Latte w/ Oat Milk (10/10) ~ This wasn't overly sweet or bitter. The oat milk gave it the perfect creaminess and everything just tasted to well together. I honestly like that you can really taste all the spices! Nothing gets hindered by the espresso or milk. Overall, I would definitely come back again! This coffee shop really matches the aesthetic of Gastown and it's so cozy! Also staff were really friendly too! Till my next trip back :')

Yelp
Still our go to Vancouver Coffee Joint... love this place. The coffees are consistently amazing and the pasties fantastic. The chocolate marshmallow cookie concoction continues to my favorite. We look forward to coming to Timbertrain every time we are in Vancouver :) Find the local places. Visit the places locals are going to, it puts a little adventure in your travels, whether when for work or play!

Yelp
Well, visiting Vancouver and trying a different cafe. This cafe has unpleasant smell and can't figure out where came from. And staff aren't very friendly. Coffee was average...

Yelp
The best coffee I had in all of Vancouver. Timbertrain is the real deal. The pour overs are excellent. I had a Colombia pour and it hit the spot like nowhere else did. The staff was friendly once I was sitting and gave me some recommendations. The seating is really nice and unique and it has a nice vibe. You'll need charge devices due to limited plugs so keep that in mind. Fully recommend!

Yelp
Yum, can't go wrong with a simple Matcha latte! The barista was nice and let us order 20 minutes before the café closed! Right by gas town so I was able to walk around with a nice hot latte.

Yelp
Service 1/5: Staff were so rude when trying to make light conversation. They proceeded to talk about us the whole time we were there so we decided to leave. I totally agree with the other reviews. The service is very distasteful and unprofessional. Coffee: Latte is bland and mediocre 2/5. Pour over 4/5, tried the both columbia blends. They use a v8 immersion dripper that seems to enhance the flavor. I was curious so I asked the staff and they were curt and said they don't know the name of every device they use. Overall, there are many wonderful coffee shops surrounding Vancouver with friendly staff and amazing coffee like Nemesis. Would not return, service is not worth the coffee.

Yelp
Went to this place one morning to grab a drink and some cookies. Unfortunately they were out of cold brew that day so opted for a matcha latte and an expresso tonic. Both drinks were good and came out relatively fast. Also got some cookies to try! I got their earl grey, vegan rye, and chocolate walnut! Highly recommend the vegan rye cookie, can barely tell it's vegan. Best part was all the cookies came out warm! Would definitely come here again to try more drinks!

Yelp
Staff were absolutely rude to us, making multiple comments about requesting an additional cup and going so far as to come around the bar and making another comment about how they are a small business. Then they proceeded to stare and smirk at our group. Would have been happy to pay for another cup. Horrible experience but great coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved this place! Simple decor, good coffee, and most importantly they know how to make a great matcha latte! Good vibes! We will be back!

Yelp
I have been here 2 times and the coffee is pretty good. Not the best I have had but good enough for me to come back. Cool little place, ambiance is nice and the pastry looks good but I have not tried them. The service was great.

Daniel K.

Yelp
I hate how I have to give this place a low review because the quality of the coffee was great. The service I received was disappointing. The baristas had great technique but lacked heart. They were rude when asking questions about the coffee and lacked the knowledge with the product they sell. Overall good coffee but poor service.

Yelp
i've been meaning to drop by here for some time now - so happy that i had the chance. I was able to pick up some geisha beans which i'm wicked excited about for a great price. Anyways - had my typical oat milk capp which i enjoyed as well as. The coffee wasn't extremely strong - but i feel like it's more palatable to most peoples preferences. Loved the service and the ability to work from this cafe.

Yelp
Just got their Americano on a cold Sunday morning. Was quite busy at 10am with customers constantly rolling in. With my short visit there, I thought they had great service. Would love to try their pour over next time!

Yelp
Back in 2017, one of my really good friends brought me here whilst showing me around. We grew up together in Vancouver, but as I've moved away she always told me she'd show me around once I drop by for a visit. She did. She knows about my strong addiction to coffee and usually, that's the major thing anyone really starts off remembering me by; coffee. It was no secret us bonding over amazing coffee again would bring our bond back after years of being apart. She introduced me to Timbertrain. The coffee and the beans were just heavenly and aromatic, by just the smell of the place is already brings you in. The location was a major bonus, as it is in the heart of downtown in a buzzing street! The place was stunning, but the seating was crammed and tight. We were bumping shoulders with the guy beside us on his laptop. The arrangement of the seating confused me, but amazing coffee makes up for it. The staff of the location were always so fun to talk to and they were often very friendly. They were very understanding, when I asked a lot about their coffee selections, as I usually know what I want, but wanted to try something new this day. They have yummy baked goods and vanishes even before I leave the cafe. A little sweetness never harmed anyone! Reminder: This place is quite busy, so if you want to grab a seat come in quick, or have someone come in before you and have them hold the seat for you.

Yelp
This coffee shop has a very unique interior, good for studying, reading, or small groups. I like the train theme. Espresso taste is not too burnt or acidic, and the oat milk is foamed perfectly. Not all coffee shops have flat whites on the menu, so I was very excited to see that they did! If I lived closer, this would be a coffee shop I'd frequent.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop with delicious pastries in Gastown. Offerings include espresso drinks, pour overs, and cold brew. We tried the walnut carrot cake and the caramelized onion and cheddar scone. They were both filling and tasty.

Logan C.

Yelp
Excellent coffee and food but the ambience was especially memorable. The way the seating integrates with the rest of the decor and the building itself is amazing--this place is definitely listed at the top of some artist's or carpenter's portfolio!
google avatar

Yuri Y.

Yelp
Great pour over. Nice atmosphere and decor. Did I mention really great pour over? They have some paninis, scones, cookies, baked goods. No beverages outside of coffee, except water, if that matters to you.

Yelp
On my last trip to Vancouver I went to Timbertrain twice to get my morning coffee fix. I had a pour over using beans from India. This was the first time I had Indian coffee and had to say it was very smooth. More earthy notes than fruity or flour all. The staff there took the time to explain the flavor profiles of each coffee and recommended the India. I liked it so much a bought a bag of beans to bring home. I also tried the nitro cold brew on my second visit. It had a nice rich foam head and a vibrant dark color. Had the look and mouth feel of a stout while drinking. I really enjoyed it and would recommend. I'm really happy to stumble upon this coffee shop while I was in town and wish they had a branch in Hong Kong where I live.

Yelp
For one of the last days of the convention I attended in Vancouver, I had to take a few hours of alone time to prepare for a business meeting. Timbertrain seemed like the perfect place to do so. It took me a few minutes of wandering around the nearby intersection to find it, but I'm glad I eventually found it. Such wonderful service, like all the other places I've visited in Vancouver. I ordered latte with a lemon blueberry muffin. Extremely moist muffin. One of the best muffins I've ever had, I'd venture to say! I took a seat at one of the booths and spread out my papers and electronics. I made myself more compact as the coffeeshop filled up and others wanted to read their books at my table. Great vibe overall. There seems to be an energetic bunch that comes here regularly or at least that's the type of crowd Timbertrain attracts, matching the attitude of the baristas. By the time I had spend a week in Vancouver, I just assume that everyone is always super happy. What a great place to exist. I love it here, and I could totally see myself becoming a regular if I lived nearby!

Sean K.

Yelp
We went there around Saturday at 11:50 am. Two baristas working. The service had a bitter note. The coffee was unremarkable. Lots of other places we'd rather try.
google avatar

Sherry L.

Yelp
This was my first stop in Vancouver (of course). I love the ambiance of the coffee shop and the bright, naturally-lit interior. There are window seats (with squeaky metal chairs) as well as cozy booths along the side of the cafe. I ordered a latte (per usual), which was creamy and delicious with a wonderful aroma. Unfortunately, parking in the area is a hot mess and the garages/lots in the area are extremely expensive ($3 for half an hour!!). This was the only reason why I did not stay and enjoy the cafe for a longer period of time!
google avatar

Viv P.

Yelp
Cute, small little coffee shop. Seasonal Coffee was great. Espresso was somewhat tart for my taste, but Hany likes it like that. Latte was delicious. Almond croissant was shaped like the baker botched it but tasted great! Less busy than the ever popular Revolver, but I like that it's more low profile and a good place to sit and chill for a while.
google avatar

Yelp
If you like good coffee, then Timbertrain is your spot. Since it's located in the heart of Gastown, I've come here on numerous occasions to sit and work and/or to pick up a coffee to go. My go-to is a almond milk latte (iced in the winter). Timbertrain knows how to make 'em! Their almond milk is some of the best in the biz. I usually like to add vanilla to my lattes but they don't have any flavouring at this coffee shop. I'm okay with that though. You appreciate the flavour of the coffee that much more. The space is fairly small - it's not really made for large groups. But they do have a few outlets next to the booths and strong wifi, which is great if you're looking to work for a few hours. I wouldn't spend a full day here though. If you're looking for a quick study sesh or just to finish something up quickly, then this would be a good spot. The staff are also super kind, especially since I've hung out here on a few occasions till the very last possible minute of them being open. I never once felt rushed to get out. So I appreciate that! They also have delicious baked goods. I'm a fan of their waffle sticks and scones (mmmm, the onion and gruyere cheese is my fave!). Make sure to grab a little snack to enjoy with your coffee. Beware, this spot does get busy quite quickly. That's why I tend to hang out here in the late afternoon when the crowds have died down. Overall, good spot if you're a coffee snob like myself!

Yelp
4.5 stars ... definitely one of my favourite spots in Vancouver for coffee. You know it's really good when you come back more than once in a vacation. With so many good coffee spots nearby, Timbertrain made the decision very hard and in the end, the atmosphere and great taste made me skip other spots. Timbertrain is in the heart of Gastown and sits in a really nice heritage spot. The place itself is quite minimalist with only a graphic engine on the large window catching your eye. They had a great playlist with Jimmy Hendrix being the front and centre... not too chill for a morning but then again, it helps to get your ears and brain working in the AM. There's a lot of tables to sit when I was there but it was a 8 am weekday. I think it gets busier. The place is comfortable as it has a lot of warm woods and comfy seating. The pour over bar is really great as it looks like almost a science lab with it's clear glass and brass accents. I really like this spot. Iced Cappuccino - Timbertrain broke the spell. After drinking probably 4 really disappointing coffees in Vancouver, this one was the one that made me go 'waaaaiiiit... Vancouver can actually pull a great espresso shot and this tastes so good!'. Turns out they can also do it consistently! This one was full one flavour and not diluted with the ice or almond milk in it. You have that rich creamy taste just helping you cool off from the insane heat. 4.5/5 Flat White - Ohhh yes... thank god for this. Woke up early one morning and needed a good cup of coffee. Timbertrain was it. This was incredible... great balance with the milk, microfoam just right, and that rich flavour hitting me. The notes of brown sugar and candied orange came through... their tasting notes were not just an fanciful thinking. It was real. 4.5/5 Vancouver downtown coffee scene has a lot of options but my absolute favourite has to be the consistent good flavour of Timbertrain.

Yelp
Drip coffee was solid but nothing special. The marshmallow popcorn cookie was amazing, would go back for that. Staff was nice as well.
google avatar

Tina H.

Yelp
Pretentious/cold service. I don't recall what I asked for but the response was somewhat dismissive. You definitely get a warmer welcome at Revolver nearby, or at least that's how I experienced it the handful of times I went to each. The nitro cold brew is pretty mediocre, and when they poured it it was 50% head. I spooned out a bunch of the foam. The flavour is weak, it tastes pretty watered down. It does, however, photograph nicely. They have both regular and bubbly water on tap which I thought was pretty cool. The layout of the cafe is nice and the seating is very unique. I think if I lived nearby I could go here more for the atmosphere of working in a cafe on my laptop rather than the coffee (cold brew, anyhow) or the service. I'd say it's more of a 3 if I were back home in Toronto but given the limited options in this area I'll round up to a 4.
google avatar

Ksyusha K.

Yelp
The business hours not updated , I had to walk for 20 mins and they were closed at 5 not at 6pm as it's says here . Looked good based on the reviews though
google avatar

Ashlee C.

Yelp
Such good coffee and fun atmosphere. The espresso I had was full bodied, chocolatey goodness! Also, they have this marshmallow cookie that is crazy good. One sad thing was that I wanted to bring some of their espresso beans home, but the ones on display were roasted over a week prior. I will just have to go back :)
google avatar

Sangeetha M.

Yelp
I came here just for the waffle sticks and thought why not get a coffee too. I'm not much of a coffee drinker so I can't comment. I got excited with the choices, and loved watching them make it in front of you. I love the decor. I can see my self sitting there reading something. But this time I was in a rush so grabbed it all to go and left. I tried the lemon curd and the PBJ. PBJ went better with the waffle sticks. The waffle sticks is basically 2 waffles cut into 3 (each) horizontally. They were okay. I wouldn't get them again. When they got cold they became hard. Great service, everyone was so friendly. There were lots of vegan and gluten free items that I will go back to check out.
google avatar

Kit Yee Y.

Yelp
Excellent almond croissant and latte!!! They cannot be compared with Starbucks. Their latte and coffee beat Starbucks for sure! Its texture is stronger and thicker. After I had a sip, I was addicted to it. The almond croissant was VERY delicious. After I had a bite, I basically kept eating it until I finished the whole croissant. The interior and environment are quite cozy with brick walls on one side. The coffee shop has high ceiling and an open space. Seats and tables are tight in between but it is alright if we just sit here to enjoy a cup of coffee and eat some sweets. The price of the latte is about the same as the ones in Vancouver or Lower Mainland. I wish they have one or more branches outside Gastown.

Yelp
This was such an awesome find for me, I just came back from So Cal and had some amazing pour over coffee, long and behold I was able to find Timbertrain had pour over coffee and was within walking distance from my hotel while visiting YRC. The barista can't remember his name was so focus and dedicated while I watched him make my cup. The coffee was so good you can drink it straight with no additional sweeteners. I got a Guatemala broasted been pour over coffee. Come try it for yourself if you are in YVR, I'll be back when I can!
google avatar

Kris S.

Yelp
Everything is awesomely cool but we came here on a Sunday morning to get some coffee. Ended up buying the almond croissant as well that is really delicious. The only reason I am taking one star off is because this place is not air conditioned and its really hot inside. Not a good feeling when you are drinking hot drinks in room filled with hot air. I feel they have awesome people working there. Very warming. Will come back when the place gets Air conditioned a little bit or a bit cool-ish temperature.
google avatar

Stacey L.

Yelp
Came here during a work trip once and I was very impressed with their beans and pour over coffees and the equipment they use. I also ordered an egg and cheese on top of their chive scone and while their scone was very flavorful and crumbly, the egg was still frozen. I learned that their menu items are pre-made and reheated. Maybe it was a fluke. 5 stars for their coffee though, I did end up bringing a bag of beans home from my trip.
google avatar

Mindy L.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee places in Vancouver. You go inside and it is decorated beautifully with wood. They have booths and small tables on the side of the booths. Their coffee is amazing and their baked goods are amazing and I keep dreaming of them. I got 3 pastries, which of course, shared. They were all amazing. Their pastries were still warm and it just made my morning. I would definitely stop here and get coffee and pastries. Great place to hang out with your friends and get coffee.
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
Well worth the trek from our hotel on Robson to get here. The espresso macchiato was to die for. The pastries look tasty will have to try it next time. It's really hard to find this place a nice local pointed it out to us, look for a bench out front.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
I am not the type of person who enjoys drinking coffee at all but I do love the latte here. When I have a latte in the US I would only order Matcha Latte as the Matcha would cover the bitterness taste coming from the coffee beans. But as I tried the latte here, I didn't notice the bitterness taste coming from the coffee bean but a smooth coffee flavor. I don't know much about coffee but when someone who doesn't drink coffee, to begin with, and enjoy the drinks here. Then that tells you something. Also, the store is quite cozy and has a unique design as well! Would definitely come back if I ever visit Vancouver, BC again!
google avatar

Yelp
Stumbled upon this cute little coffee shop. Great place to grab a cup and go or enjoy the ambience for some people watching.

Yelp
I was told that my experience at Timbertrain would depend on who is working. I ran over here on a Sunday afternoon from Canada Place before embarking on a cruise. I had a disappointing experience. The drink tasted a bit watery. It just tasted like the ratio of the milk, coffee, etc. was a little off. The latte art was decent. The barista was a bit distracted. He was asked a question and stopped mid-drink to answer it. Lattes are an exact science so it might have thrown off the drink just enough. Although I felt I did not get Timbertrain's best, it was still good. As such, I am going to give it the benefit of the doubt. In addition, I liked its space. It has hip, booth seating. If you are visiting Vancouver and looking for recommendations, feel free to message me through Yelp and I can share my itinerary, which includes my Yelp reviews. The information for an electronic copy can also be found via my Yelp profile.

Yelp
Another one added to my list of awesome coffee shops to go to. (coffee addict here and not ashamed to admit it) I love places like Timbertrain, located in Gastown. During the summer I was parked outside Timbertrain and took a little peek inside this cool cafe, love at first sight you might say. I walked in and BAM I was in coffee heaven. I ordered a almond latte and almond croissant my fave combo. I sat in one of the long booths which I felt guilty I was by myself taking this whole table, but if was a Monday afternoon not too busy. When my coffee was ready, I grabbed it from the bar and sat down, and enjoyed. The latte was delish and so was the almond croissant. The almond croissant is exactly how I like it, nice and crispy on the outside with a sweet soft middle. I will be back!

Yelp
Came here for a quick coffee and to get some work done before my friend and I headed to dinner. First off, their decor is so basic and intentional! I love it! And their COFFEE - WOW! If you enjoy light and smooth nitro- they've got it! Their Americano was also really good (and I'm not usually an Americano type of coffee drinker). Their Caliber blend is amazing!
google avatar

Cristina X.

Yelp
Lovely cafe in gastown! Pretty latte art plus delicious pull overs (solid tea options too!). I tried their cappuccino and Guatemala pull over. The Guatemala is a touch milder. It has a very nice nutty note (somewhat similar to my favorite sea urchin flavor) and hints of chocolate and citrus. Cappuccino is foamy and dark (see pics!). The space is modern and simple, great for conversations. Very friendly staff.
google avatar

Doris H.

Yelp
Cute coffee place in the Gastown area! They have a unique setup for the coffee and a neat layout of the cafe itself. Came here with a couple of friends for a meet up and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of everything. I ordered a cappuccino which was very rich in texture and flavour. I also got a slice of banana bread which I think had chocolate in it as well and came with an espresso dip(?) which was the highlight of my day. They also offer sandwiches and other beverages as well so I'm definitely coming back in the future.
google avatar

Brenda K.

Yelp
Randomly walked around Gastown and Yelp brought me here for a coffee fix. Timbertrain looked very clean and had hipster kind of atmosphere. Staff were fast and friendly. Price seemed to be similar to other places but $5 for mocha is that worth it? Anyways got Americano for $3 and taste was alright. Tasted too bitter at first and thankfully staff got more water in it. Didn't notice any treats aside from last cookie at the counter. I have to agree Timbertrain has limited seating. Maybe I'll come back to try their lattes.

Yelp
Gruyere Cheese + Chive Scone (second review): This was absolutely delicious! It had good flavor and it wasn't too dry. The scone was slightly crunchy on the outside but it was very tender on the inside. The only thing that I would change would be for it to hold it's shape a little better because it was way crumbly which made it quite difficult to eat right out of the bag. (4.5/5) Popcorn + Marshmallow Cookie: This was amazing! My bf wasn't a fan of it because it was too chewy for him but I really enjoyed the texture of it. The edges were crispy but it was kinda burnt so it may not be pleasant for some people. The cookie itself was super sweet and a bit salty from the popcorn which paired really nicely together. (4.5/5) Overall, staff are super friendly and welcoming. Their coffee tasted great because they roast their own coffee beans but they would only serve you a small cup. My bf saw them brew our coffee and there was some left in the pot but they wouldn't serve it to us which we thought was a waste and very expensive.

Yelp
I ordered a latte and they offered to add a simple syrup as they don't do flavours here. Their latte was the best latte I've ever liked and I don't particularly like coffee. They're almond chocolate croissant is also very delicious--would have that again I'm a heartbeat! Will definitely come back again! It's still the most memorable latte I've ever had!

Yelp
They have the BEST Almond Croissant HAND DOWN. I've tried it all, from all the best bakeries including Small Victory. It does not compare to the one from Timbertrain. Not even remotely close. Timbertrain's coffee is also great and the staff

Yelp
I had their cold brew from the tap this morning and it was delicious. It had sweet notes of honey and had a medium-light bite to it. The color contrast is amazing and has a nice foamy top to it. I recommend getting one of these after a long walk!
