Le Timgad - Gastro Obscura

"It’s Paris, in the mid ’70s, and you want a special restaurant meal that isn’t French. It’s likely you’ll book a table at Le Timgad. The restaurant, opened in 1971, was one of the first places in the city to serve Moroccan food to a predominantly French clientele, and today it’s a virtual time capsule from this era, with stuffy waiters, opulent furnishings, and menu items that haven’t changed in decades. Upon entering Le Timgad, the first thing you’ll see is a gurgling fountain in the lobby. You’ll then be escorted by a tuxedo-clad waiter to the tile-walled dining room with its sultry lighting and soothing soundtrack. Your table will already be loaded with a series of appetizers: two types of olives, carrots seasoned with cumin, and pickled vegetables. For the full 1970s Moroccan-Parisian experience, the obligatory order is couscous princier, a dish that was most likely created in France to appeal to French diners. It starts with a plate of couscous, which a waiter will top with vegetables braised in a spiced broth. You’ll be asked if you want to supplement this with chickpeas studded with raisins, and a spicy sauce. Finally, you’ll be presented with a silver platter of skewered grilled beef and merguez (spicy lamb sausage), and another with braised lamb shank and a fist-sized meatball in a tomatoey sauce. The tuxedos, ostentatious presentation, and decadent surroundings may hint at dinner theater, and are admittedly over the top, but the food at Le Timgad delivers, with the restaurant taking particular pride in its hand-rolled couscous, a world away from the stuff in a box. Know Before You Go Even after more than 50 years in business, Le Timgad remains a tough table to score, and reservations are obligatory." - cridibou, Austin Bush

Google
Wonderful restaurant with good and authentic food. The place is magnificently decorated as a real Moroccan house, but its narrow and small with no privacy. The main courses menu is great and quality, but starters are not good and not real moroccan. Good and attentive service. Nice and friendly staff and reception. Overall, I think the restaurant is more Algerian than Moroccan.

Aside from the warm reception and authentic decoration the food was below average and very pricey, waiter will try hard to make you order more than you need and at the end we had a big dispute about the bill! Never again and not recommended.

Google
Great restaurant to have Oriental dishes, nicely decorated, service by very friendly and experience staff, not a simple glitch, the portions are huge, thes best dishes is lamb mechoui, love it. We were 8 persons and paid only 300e less than 40 euro /person, for that type of restaurant with that service, we consider very cheap, but please note that we drink bottled water only, no wine and no desert too, we were too full, portions are huge. Small weak point is the sitting is pretty tight Highly recommended

First time to eat there. Although it was on my must visit list for few times, but I couldn’t try it.. this time I was lucky and went there… and it is simply outstanding 🤩🤩. A reservation is recommended. We ordered chicken bastilla, hareera soup, veggies coscous with roasted lamb and beef tajeen with plums.

Relatively slow service resulting in long waiting time even with reservation. However the food was generally good. The restaurant is very well decorated with traditional hand made gypsum decorations. Lamb couscous had generous amounts of couscous and a giant piece of lamb shoulder cooked perfectly but was salty. If you order couscous they serve you with a choice of topping that include a spicy sauce, I loved it but if you don’t have good tolerance to spice don’t order it! I had also pigeon tajine for change but the meat was dry and smelly as if it was cooked long time ago. Prices here are on the expensive side.

It is my second time here, I can guarantee that it is the best Moroccan restaurant in Paris. We had Harira soup, Tageen Lamb, Lamb shoulder, Basteela, and Koskos, all of the dishes are highly recommended. We were served by Ibrahim, he supported us so much, and his customer service was amazing. One important thing, is that you need to book before you come as the open at 7 PM and they are always full.

Real authentic Moracon food. The food is prepared really fresh, and the taste is unbeatable. The service is very professional and the staff are friendly and very welcoming. Special thanks and appreciation for Mr. Omar, for his kindness and welcoming attitude

Google
It’s ok? But they force you to order too much and then they say you can’t not order a main because it’s all you can eat veg. But then they are stingy when you ask for refills and don’t give you carrots ? Really weird. Why force people to order too much, say it’s no sharing because all you can eat, and then not give you the veg ? Also they cough all over you when sick (staff) without care for hygiene and the space is very small and cramped.

Yelp
My Moroccan husband and I just moved to Paris a month ago from Casablanca. We were curious to try this local Moroccan restaurant that always seemed quite busy. It was decent tajine and couscous however not as good as authentic Moroccan cuisine.

Yelp
Ambiance : this place is really cozy, charming and has personable service. I feel like I'm at a friends home rather than a business establishment. The restaurant is quant, charming and absolutely adorable Food: from what I hear it is basically the closest you can get to traditional Moroccan food. I've only been to a few Moroccan places and I can vouch and say everything that I tried was tasty and delicious. It is quite the cultural experience. I would recommend it for a date night or just to try a tasty, cozy spot. This spot is well worth. I'm excited for YOU to try it Anyone who gives this place a below 5 star rating should be in prison. Ok bye.

Yelp
As an american visiting Paris, the food and service were both exceptional. Fresh food with very unique spices! Highly recommended. The pastries at the end of the meal were a welcome homemade touch to the end of an amazing meal.

Yelp
Authentic Moroccan comfort food with a fine dinning experience. They bring house starters to the table which is very nice. We took appetizer sampler which was so delicious. The Mergez was amazing. We took chicken with couscous and lamb tagine Falling off the bone, rich flavor, well seasoned. Massive portions. Meal is not complete until you have Moroccan mint tea. This is by far one of the best food experiences you can have anywhere. MUST try while i Reservation highly recommended Very professional, excellent service , great Decor.

Yelp
My family and I had a very good experience here for lunch. My father-in-law is from Morocco and deemed all of the foods - from the appetizers, to the Tajines, to the mint tea - to be authentic. In particular I was impressed by their kefta and the lamb shoulder, which melted off of the bone. There was also a great variety of traditional Moroccan deserts (various small pastries) to choose from. I highly recommend pairing it with thé à la menthe! It's also hard to talk about this restaurant without bringing up the gorgeous hand carved wooden walls and ceilings. This is certainly a good spot for quiet family gatherings - the ambience was calm and perfect for conversation.

Yelp
Well, We entered the restaurants late night around 10:30 , with no reservation , but they managed to provide us a place, with such a heavy booking day. The hospitality was memorable, the ambiance awesomely colourful and beautiful... of-course its a fine dine upscale 3 michelin star restaurant, for they cover, welcome variety of 5 starters plates(Complementary)- each one just great! It is a exceptionally beautiful place. Just order one dish and you are done no matter how hungry you are, they keep serving you the bread/rice / curry / couscous. And they are quite generous while serving. The server will keep asking you for the refills. They do not have fix portion, its kind of all you can eat for each dish you ordered. Do not for get to save some space for their dessert platter, its a 3 level platter, good for a group of minimum 4 people, its loaded with delights, dry-fruits and other treats. Just so awesome. and enjoy the royal service! We had Chicken skewer, Moroccan vegetable over couscous. Also try their mint tea, best ever I had. :)

Yelp
Found this place by accident. Fantastic food and ambience. Staff is very friendly and courteous. They only have their menu in French (wish they had it in English); but the staff helped us through the transition and we ended up having Tagine Chicken, Cuscous which we washed down with some delicious Moroccan mint tea. Please add a menu in English and have it posted in your web site

Yelp
food - the grain is good, the sauce and vegetables as well, the lamb is very flavorful and the sausages high quality. The mint tea is perfect. wine selection is nice. the honey pastries are tasty and the assortment platter lets you try several. Pretty perfect couscous and food atmosphere - nice decor. a bit on the loud side the night we were there because quite a few somewhat drunk groups service - attentive, will serve you value - this is the problem. $75 per person for one glass of wine, one tea, a desert and an order of couscous is really pushing it. food gets 5, atmosphere gets 4, service gets 3, value gets 2... if it is a special occasion perhaps it is worth the price premium over other places that are almost just as good at half the price.

Yelp
Full on shitty experience. Made reservation through hotel concierge. Arrived promptly at appointed reservation time and found the owner arguing with a couple. We were ignored for at least 10-15 minutes before my girlfriend asked another employee if we could be seated. He kind of shrugged as the owner was arguing with this couple. Finally, the owner looked at us in an exasperated way and said follow me. He placed us next to a group of 3 people at a table for two next to a four top. When a waiter walked by we asked to be seated at a different table so That we could sit next to each other (after all Paris is for lovers). The waiter immediately said no. We then asked to see the owner. He came over, we requested a seating change, he said no, we walked. Too many good Moroccan restaurants in Paris for the owner to act like a turd. Hope they enjoyed the lost revenue.

Yelp
Fantastic place. Elegant but not stuffy, calm, attentive but not precious service. Most importantly, really tasty and well prepared moroccan food....cous cous redefined what that can be...not a mush of pasta w/ various flavors but a fluffy plate of hand rolled deliciousness w/ separate vegetables and broth and sauces carefully spooned on top and perfectly prepared meats on the side.....not cheap but go here

Yelp
Absolutely one of the best Moroccan means I have ever had! Service was excellent, and we enjoyed a lovely Moroccan red wine too. Everything was very good, from the salads and olives on the table when we arrived to the appetizers (especially the bastilla with pigeon) and the couscous with the mixed grill and tagine of lamb with prunes. We finished with a tower of Moroccan pastries and sweetened mint tea. I'm still digesting 18 hours later! If you are in Paris and like Moroccan, this is a must visit.

Yelp
Our Parisian cousins brought us here for "couscous". Like it was a pretty big deal for them, Everyone "couscous". It reminded me of us going for "sushi". They do "couscous". That was fine with me because I love couscous and after several VERY French meals, I was ready for a change. Tons of food, and it was all good. Lovely desserts and the best sweet, mint tea after dinner.

Yelp
I figured that while I visited France, we should try some French Moroccan food, right? Definitely go to this restaurant hungry, because the portions are large, filling and delicious. The couscous and the tagines are very authentic and tasty. The service was incredible. I would definitely go back!

Yelp
Best Moroccan restaurant in Paris! Excellent service and super nice ambiance. I would recommend having the Pastilla, squab/pigeon pie! It is truly superb, however, easy on the sugar on the top. Also very nice Tagines! Very memorable meal!

Yelp
For more than 16 years we have been coming to timgad and it was always a pleasant experience untill our last visit in august 2014. I booked a table for 2 for dinner at 9:00 pm and was told to come at 9:30 instead of 9:00. I arrived 5 minutes before the appointment, i waited untill 10:00 to be seated. I was seated by the head waiter. The service was very bad, the restureant was over booked. I ordered harira soup as a starter. It arrived late, usually it is served with morrocan bread but it didnt this time. While i was drinking my soup a waiter came and asked me to move to another table because he said this table is booked. I told him i also have a reservation and the head waiter sat me here. He stood there and said if you dont mind. I was very upset, i moved to another table and all the people in the room realised what happend. The 2nd course came and i finished it quickly and asked for the bill and paid for it and then asked for head waiter to come and talk to me. He came after 15 minutes. I told him i am very upset with everything. It is very insulting. You are the one that seated me and you are the one that sent the waiter to move me. I told him will you do this to a french guest? Or is it because i am foreigner from the middle east? I mentioned that this has never happened to me before. To my surprise he answered will do it to any nationality. All our customers are the same. For me, i was very insulted and i want to share my experience with you all. Hope that the owners of the restureant will know about this incident and take action against the head waiter who was a very young man because, timgad was one of my favorite restureants in Paris.
